What Should I Do If I Wake Up and It’s the Apocalypse? (GL) - Chapter 6
Facing little An Qi’s gaze, Mu Xiao felt that her glorious and mighty image was cracking into pieces.
Unfortunately, her stomach refused to cooperate and growled twice more in succession, leaving Mu Xiao with no way to change the subject and brush it off.
From the time she transmigrated until now, half a day had already passed. On top of that, she had encountered zombies one after another and used up quite a bit of physical strength.
Mu Xiao was truly hungry.
Before Mu Xiao could figure out what to say, An Qi suddenly turned and ran to the side. She opened the TV cabinet and carried out a large pile of potato chips, jelly cups, and candies, then brought them over and placed them beside Mu Xiao.
“Mu Xiao Sister, eat!” An Qi’s eyes were filled with sincerity, making Mu Xiao feel that her image was still intact.
“Uh, haha… you eat too.” Mu Xiao laughed awkwardly and picked up a jelly cup, handing it to An Qi.
An Qi obediently took it and opened it in a few quick movements. Mu Xiao, on the other hand, still had trembling hands, so she guessed she might not be able to open the jelly cup. She glanced at An Qi, who was lowering her head to eat the jelly, then quickly used her teeth.
Thanks to her childhood experience of always using her teeth to open packaging, Mu Xiao was plenty experienced and successfully opened the jelly cup.
The cool, sweet jelly slid into her stomach, and Mu Xiao felt that the constant emptiness in her stomach had finally eased. Even the trembling in her hands had almost disappeared.
The two of them ate snacks for a while. Mu Xiao estimated that she had recovered a little strength, so she simply stood up.
“An Qi, snacks alone won’t fill us up. I’ll take a look at your refrigerator.”
“Okay.” An Qi followed behind Mu Xiao the whole way like a little tail, watching as Mu Xiao opened the refrigerator. “Mu Xiao Sister, I know where the rice is!”
There was rice?
Mu Xiao’s eyes lit up. Then she looked at the few fruits in the refrigerator and the two or three eggs placed in the door compartment, feeling a tiny bit disappointed.
From the looks of it, An Qi’s family did not cook often. There were no vegetables or meat in the refrigerator.
By then, An Qi had already opened a cabinet beneath the stove and dragged out a rice bag with not much rice left inside.
“We’ll put the rice on first, then go wash up and sleep for a while. When we wake up, we’ll make egg fried rice, then set off to find your mom. How does that sound?” Mu Xiao took the rice bag from An Qi, found the rice cooker, and began measuring and washing the rice.
An Qi did not answer immediately. She hesitantly looked at Mu Xiao, her little brows tightly furrowed. After struggling with it for a while, she obediently nodded and said okay.
Mu Xiao was a little puzzled. After plugging in the rice cooker, she looked at An Qi, and inspiration suddenly flashed through her mind.
“Is An Qi worried about Mommy?”
An Qi nodded, her small hands tugging at each other.
“But Mu Xiao Sister just fought zombies. You need to rest.”
Seeing An Qi’s obedient appearance, Mu Xiao felt a little heartache. She rubbed An Qi’s little head and took out her phone.
“I only need to rest for a while. Look, it’s one in the afternoon now. We’ll sleep for one hour, then get up and pack up. We’ll leave before three.”
Before An Qi could say anything else, Mu Xiao quickly stood up again, took An Qi’s little hand, and walked into the bedroom.
“After we find An Qi’s mom, we may still have to look for a safer place. Along the way, there probably won’t be many chances to shower. So An Qi should wash properly and sleep comfortably for a while.”
Mu Xiao described the hardships they would inevitably face next rather vaguely.
But An Qi blinked and still understood what she meant.
“Sister, An Qi isn’t afraid of hardship. As long as Mommy and Sister are both here, it’s fine!” After saying this, An Qi rummaged through a small drawer for her clothes and obediently went to the bathroom.
Mu Xiao followed her in. Seeing that the shower faucet and showerhead were both quite low and that An Qi could reach them herself, and that the electric water heater was also lit, she finally felt at ease and closed the door on her way out. She did not forget to remind An Qi to call her if there was any trouble.
As the sound of water came from the bathroom, Mu Xiao took the map from her backpack and spread it out, looking at it worriedly.
The current problem was very serious. This was a national map. How could Mu Xiao possibly find the specific street routes of this city from it?!
After only looking for a short while, Mu Xiao held her head and lowered it, knocking her forehead against the table again and again to vent the resentment filling her heart.
“What do I do, what do I do?! Even if there’s a route north, relying on my own two legs won’t get me there!” Mu Xiao shouted in a lowered voice. “Why didn’t the transmigration god give me a space? If not that, then a system would have worked too!”
Just as she finished speaking, Mu Xiao once again felt that needle-like sense of being watched. She abruptly raised her head and looked toward the only window on this side. Outside was blue sky and white clouds. Compared with the city she had been in before transmigrating, the air here was fresher and so clean that there was nothing at all.
The watcher remained nowhere to be seen. Mu Xiao could not help rubbing the back of her head.
“Could my nerves be so tense they’re cramping?”
Of course, she could not get an answer. Instead, An Qi finished washing and came out.
The freshly washed little girl was warm and rosy, her skin fair with a flush of red. Seeing her, Mu Xiao instantly forgot about the feeling of being watched and her worries. She wished she could pounce over and squeeze her a couple of times.
Unfortunately, the little girl’s first words were to urge Mu Xiao to take a shower.
“I’m done washing. Sister should hurry and wash too, so you can sleep a little longer~”
In the end, Mu Xiao’s devil claws never managed to reach out. Under the little girl’s caring gaze, she could only slink into the bathroom and hurriedly take a quick battle shower before coming out.
Mu Xiao had neat short hair, while An Qi’s hair could be tied into a small ponytail. Mu Xiao found the hair dryer, pulled An Qi over, dried both of their hair, and then lay on the bed together.
The moment her head touched the pillow, Mu Xiao quickly fell asleep.
“Xiaoxiao, Xiaoxiao, it’s time to get up.”
In her dream, a gentle voice rang out.
“Mm… I’m so sleepy. I still want to sleep…”
Mu Xiao felt that her eyelids were very heavy and still wanted to keep sleeping.
“Get up and eat. Weren’t you talking yesterday about the tofu pudding from that shop at Ximen Market?” A pair of hands gently pushed Mu Xiao.
“Let me sleep a little longer, Mom—”
In her daze, Mu Xiao responded to the person calling her. But the moment she said that, her heart tightened, and she became fully awake.
She abruptly sat up and raised her head to look.
It was not a familiar room. It was not a familiar bed. And there was no person who had always carefully looked after her and raised her while teaching her.
“Mu Xiao Sister?” An Qi rubbed her eyes and sat up too.
Mu Xiao came back to herself. While An Qi was still rubbing her eyes, she quickly wiped away the faint dampness at the corners of her eyes and glanced at her watch.
“I had a dream. It’s about time. Lie down a little longer. I’ll go make fried rice.”
Before long, fragrant egg fried rice was ready. The two of them silently finished all the rice and patted their stomachs.
After exchanging a glance, An Qi sniffled and could not help asking, “Mu Xiao Sister, is this our last meal?”
She still remembered what Mu Xiao had said earlier about how difficult it would be to shower.
Mu Xiao did not know whether to laugh or cry. After thinking for a moment, she said, “It might be our last meal of egg fried rice. But we’ll always think of ways to find food. We still have to work hard to survive.”
An Qi nodded and waved her tightly clenched little fist.
“I’ll work hard!”
And so, after stuffing a few emergency medicines into the bag and casually bringing along the pepper powder and salt bottle, Mu Xiao carefully opened the door.
That zombie was still stuck in the door, as silent as ever—which Mu Xiao secretly noted down in her heart. It seemed that destroying the brain was not the only way to kill a zombie. Cutting it in half at the waist also worked.
The zombie outside the door was still lying there. She did not know whether it was because of this, but there were no traces of other zombies appearing nearby.
Mu Xiao did not rush to let An Qi come out. Instead, she had An Qi close the door first, then went out alone and circled over to the stairwell. Only after confirming there was no danger did she return and bring An Qi with her.
An Qi carried a small schoolbag, which also had some clothes and fruit inside. Mu Xiao did not blindly let An Qi stay relaxed and carefree. She did not dare be arrogant, nor did she overly protect An Qi. After all, this world no longer allowed people to live easily.
Mu Xiao did not immediately take An Qi downstairs.
Ignoring her disgust, she dragged the two zombies she had killed at the doorway over to the window facing the main entrance of the building. Then she forced herself to lift them and throw the corpses down.
The two heavy thuds of bodies landing one after another attracted many zombies gathered near the front entrance. Mu Xiao carefully looked down from above. Seeing zombies gradually gather, letting out low roars as they searched for the source of the sound and lingered around that area, she nodded in satisfaction and pulled An Qi to the elevator area. Then she opened the elevator that had previously stopped on the seventh floor.
