Chapter 3
The place where Ying Ning worked was a top-tier private hospital with excellent privacy and security. Naturally, its fees were high as well. Most wealthy people and celebrities sought treatment there, and many of its doctors also served particular families.
By the time Pei Jiuyao reached the underground parking garage, Ying Ning was already waiting there.
To be safe, Pei Jiuyao pulled a hat she had prepared in advance over Chi Yang’s head, unwrapped a mask and put it on her, then helped her out of the car.
Chi Yang’s legs were still weak, but the moment she saw Ying Ning, she pushed Pei Jiuyao away and threw herself at her.
Ying Ning caught Chi Yang securely and helped her into the elevator through the VIP entrance.
Pei Jiuyao followed behind them.
Although she had transmigrated into an Alpha’s body, she was still a Beta at heart and knew nothing about how the ABO world worked. Yet somehow, relying on her instinctive sense of smell, Pei Jiuyao could tell that Ying Ning was an Alpha.
With the keen instincts of a pack leader, Pei Jiuyao felt a distinct surge of anger at the intrusion into her territory. She stared so fiercely at Ying Ning’s back that she could almost have burned a hole through it.
She even wanted to snatch Chi Yang away and hide her inside her own body.
Snatch… Chi Yang?
A passage from the original novel quickly surfaced in Pei Jiuyao’s mind:
Chi Yang’s icy fingers gripped Pei Jiuyao’s chin. Her fierce eyes swept over Pei Jiuyao’s bloodstained face as she said indifferently, “If anything happens to Xiao Mo, you can prepare to die with her!”
Pei Jiuyao shuddered. If she snatched Chi Yang away, wouldn’t Chi Yang chop her into puzzle pieces?
She quickly shook her head, clearing the nonsense from her mind with a single click.
Why did she feel so possessive of Chi Yang? It was really strange!
After entering the elevator, Pei Jiuyao continued to stare at Ying Ning, as though driven by instinct.
As the elevator rose, a fresh scent suddenly filled the air. It was like snow blanketing a forest, cold, clean, and crisp.
Just smelling it felt like being buried in snow. The powerful yet clean pheromones took Chi Yang by surprise. But soon her fingers curled slightly around Ying Ning’s white coat, and she leaned against her shoulder with a soft gasp.
Ying Ning looked at Pei Jiuyao and frowned. She coughed lightly twice and said, “Miss… Pei, Yangyang is very uncomfortable. Could you please rein in your pheromones?”
It wasn’t just Chi Yang. Pei Jiuyao’s pheromones were relatively high-grade, and Ying Ning felt uncomfortable smelling them too.
Besides, the hospital was a public place. There was no telling what sort of trouble Pei Jiuyao’s intensely suppressive pheromones might cause if she let them spread.
Pei Jiuyao stared at Ying Ning and said, “I don’t know how.”
She was serious, but to Ying Ning, it sounded like a provocation.
As an SS-grade Alpha, Pei Jiuyao was indeed difficult to stand up to. Ying Ning could only retreat a little to one side with Chi Yang.
She couldn’t help thinking that this woman really did live up to her reputation as a scumbag. She was releasing her pheromones so recklessly, without any concern that she might cause chaos among the people around her.
Ying Ning took off her bracelet, adjusted it to the highest setting, and handed it to Pei Jiuyao. “It’s a pheromone suppression bracelet. Why don’t you put it on for now? There will be other medical staff outside the elevator, and you might cause trouble for them like this.”
Pei Jiuyao quickly accepted it and examined it curiously in her hand.
Thinking that Pei Jiuyao was wary of it, Ying Ning explained, “It’s a high-end bracelet worth hundreds of thousands. It won’t harm your body.”
Hearing that, Pei Jiuyao copied the way Ying Ning had taken it off and fastened it around her wrist.
There was a scale along the side. She noticed that Ying Ning had set it to the highest level and selected “Suppress Self” rather than “Suppress Others.”
The bracelet looked quite advanced. No wonder it was so expensive.
When the elevator reached the top floor, Ying Ning led Chi Yang out first.
Pei Jiuyao felt an almost uncontrollable urge to take Chi Yang from her. She followed them and said, “Doctor Ying, let me help her instead.”
The moment her hand touched Chi Yang’s arm, Chi Yang’s body trembled. She let out a low, reflexive growl. “Pei Jiuyao, don’t touch me!”
Pei Jiuyao pulled her hand back and stared at her blankly.
Chi Yang’s condition had worsened. The eyes visible between her mask and hat were wet, and the rims were bloodshot.
Seeing Pei Jiuyao’s stunned expression, her lashes trembled, and a string of tears rolled down her cheeks onto the mask, collecting along its edge.
“Don’t leave yet. Wait for me outside.” Chi Yang’s voice was soft and weak.
“Oh,” Pei Jiuyao replied, watching helplessly as Ying Ning took Chi Yang into the hospital room.
She felt a little hurt. Someone had taken her little fox away.
Her… little fox?! Pei Jiuyao shook her head vigorously again.
How could she be so possessive of someone she had only just met? It made absolutely no sense!
Although they had slept together last night, and Chi Yang happened to be her type, and her voice sounded lovely, and she smelled good, and her skin was soft and nice to touch, and she tasted sweet when bitten…
She couldn’t keep thinking about it!
Pei Jiuyao sat down on a hospital chair and rubbed her head hard.
Clear everything with one click.
Inside the hospital room.
Chi Yang had been given an injection of suppressant and was lying on the bed with her shirt collar open. The abnormal redness had completely faded from her skin, and her gaze had returned to its usual coolness.
She sat up, propped a pillow behind her lower back, and drank some of the nutritional supplement beside her.
Before long, Ying Ning walked in with several pages of test results. She looked at Chi Yang and smiled. “You’re recovering well.”
Chi Yang set the supplement on the cabinet. Her face was expressionless, and her voice was indifferent. “As long as I can’t smell her pheromones, I feel much better.”
Ying Ning chuckled. “What a surprise. I never expected Pei Jiuyao’s pheromones to be the ones that could make you react.”
“I’m surprised too.” Chi Yang sneered.
After being an SS-grade Alpha for nearly ten years, Chi Yang had unexpectedly undergone a second differentiation and become an Omega.
The second differentiation had damaged her bodily functions and caused a severe pheromone imbalance. Suppressants no longer worked on her, and she was extremely sensitive during heat. No Alpha could mark or soothe her, so she had to rely on injections of a special preparation.
She had never expected Pei Jiuyao to be able to mark her.
And after being temporarily marked, she had entered a submissive period, something extremely rare among Omegas nowadays. It came with all sorts of pathetic reactions: dependence on her Alpha, separation anxiety, fear of being abandoned, and wanting to cry whenever that Alpha spoke harshly to her.
It was utterly ridiculous.
Chi Yang’s gaze grew colder, making her look like an icy blade resting on the hospital bed. If she had to regress into a baby, or even an animal, she would rather cut out her gland than be at the mercy of a scumbag.
Still, Pei Jiuyao’s behavior today had genuinely surprised her. Could it really have been someone else who drugged her?
Ying Ning softly called, “Yangyang,” pulling her back to reality from her fragmented thoughts.
“We detected the X2-9 preparation in your blood.”
Chi Yang frowned slightly. “What’s that?”
“It’s a new preparation that induces heat in Omegas,” Ying Ning explained gravely. “It’s imported, and because it’s so expensive, it currently circulates only in upper-class circles.”
She added, “It should be fairly common in the entertainment industry too.”
“I didn’t know.” Chi Yang rubbed her temple, looking somewhat irritated.
Ying Ning lowered her voice. “You don’t like to party, so of course you wouldn’t know about it. But Pei Jiuyao…”
Everyone knew Pei Jiuyao liked to have fun.
Chi Yang’s expression darkened at once. Her fingers curled inward unconsciously, leaving several faint pale marks on the hospital quilt.
She knew what Ying Ning meant. Pei Jiuyao liked to party and had money, so getting hold of the preparation would have been easy for her. Chi Yang had never stopped suspecting her.
But since Pei Jiuyao had been… very attentive to her today, Chi Yang decided to give her a chance.
“Ningning.” Chi Yang slowly raised her head, her voice cool. “Help me find out whether Pei Jiuyao was drugged yesterday.”
“Pei Jiuyao?” Ying Ning was surprised. “Is that what she told you?”
Chi Yang nodded.
Ying Ning put away Chi Yang’s blood test report. “Don’t worry. Even if you hadn’t asked, I would have tested her blood. We need to check how compatible her pheromones are with yours anyway.”
Pei Jiuyao sat on a chair outside the hospital room, watching Ying Ning come and go. She kicked her feet restlessly.
She got up and walked over to stand beside the door. Through a small pane of clear glass, she could see Chi Yang sitting on the bed and talking to Ying Ning.
Her dark curls fell loosely around her, and the bones of her slender shoulders and back were slightly prominent. Her clear eyes were like pale brown glass beads. She occasionally frowned, but most of the time her expression was indifferent.
Pei Jiuyao pressed her ear against the door like a peeping tom. Unfortunately, the room was so well soundproofed that she couldn’t make out what they were saying.
Suddenly, perhaps finding her long hair in the way, Chi Yang ran her slender, porcelain-white fingers through it and gathered it behind her, revealing a faint kiss mark on her neck.
Pei Jiuyao unconsciously ground her canines again.
Just then, Ying Ning suddenly turned and walked toward the door.
Pei Jiuyao quickly pulled her head back and returned to her chair, kicking her feet again. When Ying Ning came out, she looked up and forced a smile. “Doctor Ying!”
She then stood up, pretending to be at ease, and asked brightly, “Can I go in now?”
Ying Ning paused. “Miss Pei…”
For some reason, Ying Ning had the distinct feeling that a great deal of hostility toward her lay hidden beneath Pei Jiuyao’s smile.
“Miss Pei, since you marked Yangyang last night, I need to give you a blood test to check your health,” Ying Ning said gravely.
The corners of Pei Jiuyao’s eyes visibly drooped. Looking toward the hospital room door, she said, “Oh.”
She still couldn’t see her?
“Then let’s hurry.” Pei Jiuyao quickly rolled up her sleeve and smiled at Ying Ning, forgetting to retract her canines.
Ying Ning stiffened at the sight of Pei Jiuyao’s pointed teeth, a chill running down her back.
“Then come with me.”
In the blood-drawing room, Pei Jiuyao watched the blood flow from the needle into the collection tube. She couldn’t help licking the corner of her lips, her eyes reddening slightly.
Under immense pressure, Ying Ning pulled out the needle, breathed a long sigh of relief, and immediately moved away from Pei Jiuyao.
“Thank you.” Pei Jiuyao looked up and raised her brows slightly. “Can I see Chi Yang now?”
Ying Ning’s back twitched, and she looked somewhat surprised.
Thank you?
Pei Jiuyao had visited this hospital before, and every doctor who had treated this “scumbag” had given her an extremely low rating for behavior that included, but was not limited to, being willful, overbearing, and extremely rude.
Had marking Chi Yang turned her into this?
Ying Ning looked up. From what she could see, Pei Jiuyao had a smile in her eyes, a confident air, and a touch of roguishness in her expression. It was plainly the displeasure of a pack leader whose territory had been invaded.
She seemed to have instinctively taken Ying Ning for a romantic rival.
Pei Jiuyao was completely under the control of her instincts. This wasn’t how an Alpha with a promiscuous private life should behave.
No Omega could resist an Alpha like this. Ying Ning couldn’t help worrying a little about Chi Yang.
“Yes, but Chi Yang has been moved to a VIP room. Also… she may be resting now, so don’t wake her.”
After a moment’s thought, Ying Ning added, “Remember to wear the bracelet.”
Pei Jiuyao touched her wrist. “Thank you, Doctor Ying. I’ll return yours once I find my own.”
The VIP room had a solid wooden door, so Pei Jiuyao couldn’t see how Chi Yang was doing from outside.
She hesitated at the door for a moment. Remembering that Ying Ning had said Chi Yang might be asleep, she didn’t knock.
When she pushed the door open, Chi Yang was indeed lying on her side with her eyes closed. Her brows were slightly knitted, and she looked tired.
As though their emotions had suddenly become linked, Pei Jiuyao felt an inexplicable ache in her heart. She sat beside the bed and unconsciously brushed her fingers over the crease between Chi Yang’s brows.
The woman on the bed hummed softly and reached into the air, trying to catch Pei Jiuyao’s fingers, but Pei Jiuyao pulled her hand away.
Chi Yang had changed into a hospital gown. The blue and white stripes against her skin made her look even paler. Her raven-feather lashes trembled slightly, casting shadows on her skin.
Pei Jiuyao leaned closer and carefully sniffed. The sweet strawberry scent had vanished, covered by the hospital’s strong smell of disinfectant. Pei Jiuyao guessed that it had been the scent of Chi Yang’s pheromones.
A strange sense of loss swept over her.
She looked down and fiddled with the bracelet, switching it from “Suppress Self” to “Suppress Others,” then from the highest setting to the lowest, before switching it back.
Her memories kept coming in fragments, and Pei Jiuyao couldn’t remember exactly what the bracelet was for.
After she had adjusted it a few times, Pei Jiuyao heard Chi Yang give a muffled moan.
She quickly returned the settings to what they had been. When she looked up, Chi Yang had rolled onto her back, her arms beside her ears and her head turned to one side. She stared at Pei Jiuyao in a daze, her eyes misty.
“Why are you here?” Chi Yang’s voice was still a little soft.
Pei Jiuyao straightened her back. “You told me to wait for you.”
Chi Yang murmured an “Oh,” as though remembering, and rolled over again to face Pei Jiuyao.
The bedsheet had grown a little rumpled from her rolling around.
Then Chi Yang closed her eyes and sniffed, as though looking for a scent she couldn’t find. She frowned in confusion, opened her eyes, and stared blankly at Pei Jiuyao, lightly biting her finger.
Pei Jiuyao sat stiffly in the chair, unsure what to say.
After a long while, Chi Yang said quietly, “I’m hungry.”
“What would you like to eat?” Pei Jiuyao asked softly.
Chi Yang’s gaze was a little unfocused. She thought about it very seriously and said, “I want soup. Hmm… chicken soup with fish maw.”
With that, she closed her eyes and fell asleep again shortly afterward.
Pei Jiuyao tucked the quilt around her. Chi Yang’s light breaths brushed softly against her hand. Looking at her, Pei Jiuyao’s lips curved slightly.
Chicken soup with fish maw… It sounded like something a little fox would enjoy.
