Chapter 5
Nearly three hours had passed by the time Pei Jiuyao brought the soup to the hospital.
She thought Chi Yang must be awake by now.
After taking stock of everything, Pei Jiuyao had quickly made peace with the strange feelings she’d had earlier.
Although pheromones were very likely influencing her, she didn’t believe they alone could make her feel that way about Chi Yang.
Chi Yang really was her type. Pei Jiuyao now thought she had most likely fallen in love at first sight with the woman from last night.
After all, although Pei Jiuyao appeared to have spent many years in the entertainment industry, her manager had actually protected her very well. She had never dated in all those years, nor had she led a chaotic social life.
She had never liked anyone either. When it came to love, she was a complete blank slate.
Now that she was here, she might as well make the best of it. Pei Jiuyao couldn’t be bothered to dwell on those pointless questions anymore.
Chi Yang was the pressing problem she needed to deal with now.
As she approached the hospital room, Pei Jiuyao let out a long breath. Just as she was about to push the door open, a clear voice called “Pei Jiuyao” from behind her.
Pei Jiuyao was about to turn around when someone shoved her hard, sending her stumbling against the wall.
When she turned, she saw an Omega glaring at her ferociously, her eyes red.
Pei Jiuyao’s first thought was that the original owner had mistreated this Omega, and she had come looking for revenge.
It was hardly surprising that she thought so. As memories trickled in, the things the original owner had done were simply appalling. Anyone who heard that Pei Jiuyao was involved in such a story would probably think the same.
Protecting the soup in her arms, Pei Jiuyao asked softly, “Who are you?”
“Pei Jiuyao! Don’t pretend you don’t know me!” the Omega shouted. “What did you do to Yangyang yesterday? Why is she in the hospital? Don’t tell me you hit her?!”
Pei Jiuyao was completely bewildered by the questions. Before she could explain, the Omega raised a hand to strike her.
She had no choice but to quickly free one hand and catch the Omega’s wrist.
The Omega wasn’t very strong. After struggling a few times without breaking free, she actually burst into tears, crying and shouting, “Scumbag! Trash! Bastard! If anything happens to my Yangyang, I won’t let you get away with it!”
Pei Jiuyao barely noticed the insults. Instead, the words “my Yangyang” instantly set her off, stirring something deep in her mind. Her grip on the Omega’s wrist tightened, her eyes reddened, and her voice turned fierce.
Holding back her impulse with the last shred of reason she possessed, Pei Jiuyao said in a low voice, “Chi Yang is mine, not yours.”
The Omega was so frightened that she immediately stopped crying and trembled on the spot.
That was the scene Chi Yang came out to find.
Leaning against the door, she coughed lightly. “Pei Jiuyao, let go.”
Chi Yang looked very slender in her oversized hospital gown. Her skin was pale, and her long, ink-dark curls fell over her body, creating a striking contrast with her jade-like complexion. The outer corners of her light brown, glasslike eyes tilted upward, and her thin lips were pressed together, giving her a cool, indifferent appearance.
She was like a pale blue lake, like a handful of lilies scattered in the wind.
“Chi Yang, why did you come out?” Pei Jiuyao let go, and the fierce look on her face vanished in an instant.
As soon as she was free, the Omega threw herself into Chi Yang’s arms and cried in a soft, sweet voice, “Yangyang, thank goodness you’re okay. You scared me to death.”
“There, there.” Chi Yang gently stroked the Omega’s hair.
Pei Jiuyao’s eyes darkened. She had never seen that expression on Chi Yang before. So Chi Yang could look at someone else so tenderly.
Her fingers abruptly clenched, her nails digging into her skin.
Chi Yang stared at Pei Jiuyao’s trembling fist and immediately recalled what Ying Ning had said about a “wolf king’s territorial instincts” and the “Tyrant.” When she looked up, she found Pei Jiuyao staring fixedly at the person in her arms.
Chi Yang had once been an Alpha herself. She knew how frightening it could be to act unconsciously under the control of hormones.
Although she didn’t understand why an Alpha like Pei Jiuyao, who had marked countless Omegas, would still be controlled by her hormones like a novice.
Even so, Chi Yang quickly pushed the Omega out of her arms, stroked her hair, and changed the subject. “Don’t stand out here. Come inside first.”
Once they were in the room, Pei Jiuyao sat as close to Chi Yang as she could, opened the insulated container, and ladled out some soup for her.
Chi Yang took the bowl and sipped slowly. Her eyes sparkled, and her pale lips gradually regained some color.
The Omega glared angrily at Pei Jiuyao. With no other chair available, she had to squeeze onto the sofa beside Ying Ning.
Pei Jiuyao asked softly, “Does it taste good?”
Chi Yang nodded, and Pei Jiuyao’s lips curved upward, revealing the tip of a canine.
The Omega said indignantly, “Yangyang, you still dare eat something Pei Jiuyao brought you? Aren’t you afraid she might have poisoned it?”
Pei Jiuyao muttered, “I would never poison you.”
Chi Yang cleared her throat and said quietly, “I know. You wouldn’t dare.”
“Yangyang!” The Omega pouted and said coaxingly, “Why are you spending time with a scumbag like Pei Jiuyao? Didn’t you hate her more than anyone before?”
Chi Yang took another small sip of soup and explained softly, “Xiao Mo, I got sick. Miss Pei brought me to the hospital.”
Xiao Mo? So this Omega was Song Mo, Chi Yang’s “fiancée.”
Pei Jiuyao’s gaze drifted slowly toward her, and tension suddenly simmered beneath the surface.
Song Mo was still dissatisfied. “She just happened to be there when you got sick? She must have been up to no good. Yangyang, you’re so kind. You can’t let Pei Jiuyao fool you.”
Pei Jiuyao could sense the immense hostility coming from Song Mo—the hostility of Chi Yang’s “fiancée.”
If Pei Jiuyao had still been able to think clearly, she would have realized there was nothing wrong with Song Mo treating a scumbag like the original owner that way. But at this moment, she only felt that Song Mo was provoking her.
She raised a brow at Song Mo. “It wasn’t a coincidence. I was with Chi Yang last night.”
Song Mo’s eyes widened. “With her? What do you mean?”
“Exactly what I said. We were together in every sense.”
“Pei Jiuyao!” Chi Yang scolded.
She had been scolded after all. Pei Jiuyao pressed her lips into a thin line and lowered her head dejectedly.
“Yangyang, what does Pei Jiuyao mean?” Song Mo asked in disbelief, her lips trembling.
Song Mo was Chi Yang’s childhood friend. They had been neighbors and had grown up together. She had known for a long time that Chi Yang had differentiated into an Omega, and Chi Yang had never intended to hide what had happened with Pei Jiuyao from her.
She had only planned to tell her when the time was right.
Pei Jiuyao’s current state as a “Tyrant” was really… hard to describe.
It seemed she needed to clear some things up with Pei Jiuyao as soon as possible, or there was no telling what might happen.
“Xiao Mo.” Chi Yang put her soup on the cabinet and slowly said, “Pei Jiuyao and I have a pheromone compatibility rating of 100%.”
Song Mo’s eyes widened in growing shock, and she turned to Ying Ning.
Pei Jiuyao was shocked too. She looked at Chi Yang, bewildered.
“Wasn’t Yangyang unable to be marked?” Song Mo asked Ying Ning in a trembling voice.
“She’s already been marked by Pei Jiuyao,” Ying Ning replied gravely.
Song Mo sprang to her feet, furious, and tried to charge at Pei Jiuyao. “Pei Jiuyao, you bastard! How dare you!”
Chi Yang gave Ying Ning a look, and Ying Ning quickly wrapped her arms around Song Mo. “Song Mo, don’t be impulsive.”
Chi Yang leaned against the hospital bed and covered her mouth as she coughed several times. Frowning slightly, she said, “Xiao Mo, let me handle this myself.”
“Yangyang!”
“Don’t worry, Xiao Mo. I know what I’m doing.” Chi Yang turned to Ying Ning. “I want to speak with Pei Jiuyao alone. Ningning, please take Xiao Mo outside.”
Song Mo looked deeply aggrieved, but she still stomped her foot and let Ying Ning lead her out.
The noisy room fell silent in an instant. Outside the window, the wind rustled through the leaves.
Pei Jiuyao carefully pulled the light quilt higher over Chi Yang, then opened the insulated container and poured out some more soup. The gentle sound of it trickling into the small bowl became the only music in the spacious hospital room.
After Pei Jiuyao handed it to her, Chi Yang cupped the bowl in her soft, porcelain-white hands and sipped from it in small mouthfuls, just as before.
As afternoon approached, orange sunlight like molten gold streamed through the gaps between the buildings and through the window, falling on Chi Yang like stars scattered across white jade.
Even in a hospital gown, with her skin pale, Chi Yang was breathtakingly beautiful. Especially when she glanced at Pei Jiuyao with those foxlike eyes, leaving her unable to feel the slightest bit angry.
Pei Jiuyao thought of the Omega named Song Mo.
From the memories she retained, Pei Jiuyao knew that most Omegas were soft, sweet, and good at acting coquettishly—very endearing creatures.
Did Chi Yang like that type too?
Pei Jiuyao pressed her lips together, then looked up and asked, “Aren’t you an Alpha?”
The fingers holding Chi Yang’s bowl trembled. Pei Jiuyao hurriedly reached over to steady it. Their hands touched, and both of them shivered.
Pei Jiuyao pulled away as though shocked. She lightly rubbed her fingers together, a trace of scorching warmth still lingering on them.
Her hands were somewhat larger than Chi Yang’s, with long fingers, sharply defined bones, and faintly pink nails trimmed into neat curves.
Her skin was a warm ivory, luminous and full of life in the sunlight.
Chi Yang couldn’t help remembering how strong those hands had been when they pinned her down last night. They had even left purplish-red finger marks on her waist.
Her gaze flickered away, and her cheeks reddened a little. Chi Yang forced her voice to remain cool. “I underwent a second differentiation. I’m an Omega now. Didn’t you already know? Why are you asking?”
Pei Jiuyao didn’t quite understand what “second differentiation” meant. She sorted through the information in her head and combined it with what she had read online, arriving at a conclusion:
Chi Yang had changed from an Alpha into an Omega, was 100% compatible with her pheromones, and had been marked by her yesterday.
Whichever way she looked at it, this wasn’t exactly a disastrous start.
After a long while, Chi Yang finished her soup and set down the bowl. She took a tissue and carefully wiped her mouth, then rinsed it with water. Lowering her eyes, she said, “Pei Jiuyao, I have a few questions for you.”
Pei Jiuyao took the tissue and threw it into the trash. “Go ahead.”
“There were traces of drugs in my blood. Are you sure you had nothing to do with it?”
The original owner had indeed been involved, but Pei Jiuyao herself hadn’t done it. After a moment’s thought, she decided to deny it. “I didn’t do it.”
Chi Yang looked at her, her eyes calm and unreadable. Pei Jiuyao met her gaze without a trace of guilt.
After they had stared at each other for half a minute, Chi Yang asked, “Even if you didn’t drug me, you showed up there and marked me. You must have wanted to get something out of me, right?”
“What… do you mean?”
Chi Yang explained, “I’m asking whether you kept any evidence from last night, such as a video. It was your villa, after all.”
Worried that Pei Jiuyao might misunderstand, she added, “Or perhaps you already had a habit of recording things.”
“I don’t!” Pei Jiuyao was anxious, angry, and a little aggrieved. She was an innocent novice who, in more than twenty years, had never even held a woman’s hand outside of acting. Why should she take the blame for that scumbag Alpha?
She absolutely refused to take the blame!
“There’s no recording, so don’t worry.” Pei Jiuyao ran her tongue over her canine. “Besides, I was there last night too. Why would I keep a video?”
Chi Yang leaned against the pillow and remained still for a while, her expression gradually losing some of its sharpness.
She picked up her phone and swept a cool gaze over Pei Jiuyao. “Then let’s discuss the terms of the agreement.”
