A Faceful Of Lovey-Dovey PDA - Chapter 19
After dinner, Su Qin and Chu Mei still did what they used to do, walking laps around the field to digest their food. After a few rounds, the two of them sat cross-legged on the green grass. Since Chu Mei was wearing a skirt and it was somewhat inconvenient, Su Qin took off her jacket and draped it over her legs. Looking at Chu Mei’s cheeky grin, she rolled her eyes. “Is wearing a skirt that practically shows your butt very comfortable?”
After Su Qin took off her jacket, the white shirt underneath was revealed. The evening breeze made it flutter, making her look frail and graceful, with another kind of feeling Chu Mei could not quite describe. If Lin Xueyin were here, she would have jumped out long ago and told her that feeling was called “abstinently alluring.”
Chu Mei looked innocent. “It’s the first day. Everyone is competing over who looks hotter. Our dorm discussed it, and everyone wore matching miniskirts. Mine is already pretty good. At least it covers my thighs.”
“Yo, then should I praise you for being hot enough, little girl?” Su Qin’s voice was chilly. Chu Mei shrugged. “I’m not lying to you. When I was changing skirts, if I hadn’t considered you, I absolutely would have worn an even shorter one.”
“Enough. Don’t just follow the crowd. You’re not suited to such short skirts.” The more Su Qin looked, the more it bothered her. Especially the fiery gazes of passersby. They made her feel even more uncomfortable. She wished she could immediately wrap Chu Mei up in a bedsheet.
Chu Mei pursed her lips. “Do you really not like it? Didn’t you say you liked me wearing pink? Today, everyone said this outfit looked good. There was even a senior brushing his teeth who was so stunned when he saw me that he swallowed his toothpaste.”
“Maybe he was frightened. Maybe he saw you and wondered where the school had gotten such a huge fluttering moth.”
“Fuck, Ah Qin, that’s a gorgeous personal attack.”
“Honest advice is always unpleasant to hear. Stop talking nonsense and hurry up. Give me your class schedule so I can look at it.” Su Qin ignored her little act. Chu Mei obediently handed her the photo on her phone. “What are you looking at this for?”
Su Qin enlarged the photo. “Don’t you have elective courses? I’m checking whether we have any overlapping classes we can choose together.”
“Ahhhhh, Ah Qin, you’re too smart!” Chu Mei turned and hugged Su Qin. Su Qin was helpless. “You’re already in university. Why are you still like a child?”
“Hurry, look, look.” Chu Mei had been worrying that she had too little time with Su Qin. There were also too many credits to complete in first year. As the saying went, one could not have both fish and bear’s paw. She had already been considering how to skip class to find Su Qin, but judging from the way the homeroom teacher had lectured them today, the road of skipping class would surely be filled with thorns and hardship.
“Mm. Only classical music, oil painting, and literature appreciation and art. These three are the same.” Su Qin analyzed it. Chu Mei looked at her with lovestruck admiration. “Ah Qin, you’re so smart. You can remember the electives without even looking at your phone. No wonder you were appointed student council president. From now on, can I call you President?”
“What nonsense.” Su Qin poked her forehead. “Don’t learn these useless things.” She handed the phone back to Chu Mei. “Then let’s do this. Choose classical music and literature. Later, do it on the computer.”
“We’re not choosing oil painting?” Chu Mei did not want to give up even the slightest chance to be with Su Qin. Su Qin looked at her with a smile that was not quite a smile. “I heard from an upperclassman that oil painting involves drawing full nudes.”
“Fuck, then you definitely shouldn’t choose it.” Chu Mei quickly shook her head. Su Qin felt somewhat comforted. This child was still pretty sensible.
Chu Mei thought about it, then smiled wickedly. “I’ll just choose it myself.”
Su Qin: “…”
—
Although first-year university classes were busy, they were much better compared to senior year of high school. Because the school was coordinating training grounds, military training was temporarily postponed by one month.
Most importantly, there were no longer densely packed exam key points in class, nor seas of exercises and test papers for homework. Chu Mei now had much more time to sleep and use her phone to chat with Su Qin.
Although her classes did not overlap much with Su Qin’s, unexpectedly, she had many general required courses with Lin Xueyin.
Ever since the day Lin Xueyin had argued with Sister Fang, she seemed to have changed into a different person. She no longer loved smiling as much. Her whole person looked cold, as though something was missing.
It was the same when the four of them were together. She no longer clung to Sister Fang the way she had when they were younger, and the things she said to her were also faint and indifferent. Instead, she had made quite a few friends and often went out with them when she had nothing to do. Chu Mei understood very clearly. Although Sister Fang acted as if she did not care, inside, who knew how awful she felt, as if a cat were scratching at her heart?
But some things could not be solved through jealousy. With the rise in popularity of Super Girl, androgynous beauty began spreading throughout campuses. Someone like Sister Fang, who dressed coolly yet had long hair and a beautiful face, and who looked as if she was indifferent to everything, high above others, cool, handsome, wild, domineering, and arrogant, became extremely popular. There was never any shortage of people chasing after her, but she always seemed as though she cared about nothing. No one could guess what she was thinking.
Although Sister Fang really was somewhat infuriating, they were still friends. They could not let the two of them continue in this stalemate. Taking advantage of class time, Chu Mei tried to enlighten Lin Xueyin. “Ah Yin, that’s about enough. I can see both of you are uncomfortable. How long are you planning to stay angry? Even meals feel weird.”
Lin Xueyin sighed. “Chuchu, you don’t understand. The me from before was too innocent, too full of hot-blooded passion. Love needs maintenance. If things go on like this for too long, Sister Fang will eventually leave me.”
“This is your idea of maintenance?” Chu Mei secretly glanced at the teacher and took a bag of fries out of her bag. “This is clearly a cold war.”
“You don’t understand this.” Lin Xueyin reached over and grabbed a handful of fries. Chu Mei widened her eyes and pressed down on her hand. Lin Xueyin glared back at her. “You’re actually eating junk food. Does Ah Qin know?”
Chu Mei immediately deflated like a balloon and let go of her hand.
Lin Xueyin looked at her in disdain. “Look, look. The moment Ah Qin is mentioned, you lose your temper completely. Do you know? My today is your tomorrow. One day, because you’re too obedient, you’ll be disliked.”
“What do you mean?” Chu Mei glared angrily at Lin Xueyin. “Bullshit. Even if the sky collapses, the earth caves in, West Lake dries up, and Leifeng Pagoda falls down, Ah Qin will never dislike me. You don’t know how much she likes me. Every day, she stares at my beautiful profile for a very, very long time.”
Lin Xueyin laughed. “You still don’t know? Whenever Ah Qin gets sleepy, her eyes lose focus. Tsk, tsk. And you still say she isn’t tired of you?”
If anyone else had said this to her, Chu Mei would have turned hostile and refused to acknowledge them long ago. But this was, after all, her childhood friend who had grown up playing with her, the person closest to her aside from Su Qin. How could Chu Mei not trust her?
Lin Xueyin used her hand to twist Chu Mei’s head around. “Chuchu, turn your head and look. Look at all these young bodies around you.”
Chu Mei: “…”
Lin Xueyin said, “In this world, people’s hearts are the easiest things to change. What we can do is not let ourselves become boring, and try our best to show many different sides of ourselves.”
Many different sides?
Those words were deeply imprinted in Chu Mei’s mind.
That night, after Su Qin finished showering and opened her laptop, she was just about to log onto QQ and ask Chu Mei whether she wanted to go study together that evening when there were two knocks on the door.
“Wow.”
Her roommate let out an exaggerated cry. Su Qin did not notice and kept looking down.
Only when a familiar fragrance rushed into her nose did Su Qin lift her head. With one glance, her mouth formed an O.
