A Female Lead Wants a Lifelong Union With Me (Quick Transmigration) - Chapter 22
Such a tiny slip of paper plunged An He and Lin Ruoxue into a long silence.
The fact that the person chose to fly a note over exactly when they stepped out was likely no coincidence. Perhaps he had been lurking in the darkness, monitoring them all along, waiting for the perfect moment to act.
This move today was clearly intended to show off his skill to An He and Lin Ruoxue, while simultaneously telling them: With your strength, you can do nothing to stop me.
Thinking of it this way was truly infuriating, but for now, they really had no way to deal with him. It was almost laughable—An He hadn’t even managed to confirm exactly who he was, having only a general suspect in mind.
With these thoughts, An He couldn’t help but sigh, instinctively glancing at Lin Ruoxue standing beside her. She noticed that Lin Ruoxue had been standing there holding the note for a long time.
“Are you okay?” Seeing that her state seemed off, An He couldn’t help but worry. She took a few steps closer and stood gently by Lin Ruoxue’s side.
“I’m fine.” Seeing her approach, Lin Ruoxue curled her lips into a slight smile. She reached out, took An He’s hand, and gave it a few squeezes. “He’s just scum.”
She spoke very softly; An He only caught a few scattered words. Before An He could ask further, she saw Lin Ruoxue crumple the paper into a ball and let the wind crush it into powder.
“Come on, let’s go back to sleep.” Following that, she closed the inn’s door again, turned around, and planted several loud kisses on An He’s forehead.
“Stop it,” An He pushed her away.
Lin Ruoxue let herself be pushed with a smile. Once An He had pushed enough, she leaned down and suddenly scooped An He up. Before An He could react, she was already being cradled in Lin Ruoxue’s arms like a doll.
Before she could speak, Lin Ruoxue leaned down again and tenderly kissed her eyes.
“There’s always time to worry about troublesome things,” she said while carrying An He upstairs. “But the priority right now is to get a good night’s sleep.”
“Maybe by the time we wake up, everything will be resolved,” she said as she placed An He back onto the bed.
Then, she also lay down fully clothed, sleeping right beside An He.
“Xixi,” Lin Ruoxue smiled, her hand rhythmically patting An He’s back. “Hurry up and sleep.”
She’s like a parent coaxing a child to sleep, An He thought to herself.
Tomorrow I need to investigate and see who Wang Daniu interacted with before he died…
She was still thinking about this, but before she could finish the thought, she was successfully coaxed to sleep by Lin Ruoxue.
Although the Hour of the Rat had long passed, there was still a long time before dawn—enough for a solid rest.
Lin Ruoxue, however, felt no sleepiness at all.
She carefully rolled over to face An He, staring at her sleeping face with eyes full of love. An He was very well-behaved when asleep; her small face was flushed pink, looking incredibly cute. Heart fluttering, Lin Ruoxue reached out and gently touched the tip of her nose.
“I won’t let anything happen to you,” she whispered softly, her voice so light it seemed intended only for her own ears.
In truth, there was something she hadn’t told An He regarding that note. There were words on the front, but there was also something on the back: a simple drawing.
It was a drawing of a fox pierced through the body by a sword.
Lin Ruoxue didn’t need to think to know who it referred to; the person was clearly coming for her. She had practiced cultivation alone for a long time before An He saved her, and during that time, she had often transformed into human form to play among people without ever being discovered.
Someone who could see through to her true form was certainly no ordinary person. On this Ghost Street, it was unlikely any ghost other than that man could do it.
It was that man named Zhou Tage.
Even though he looked fierce and violent, his aura was different from everyone else’s; he practiced cultivation toward immortality.
There are two ways for cultivators to increase their internal power. One is through self-cultivation, using immortal pills and spiritual herbs as supplements. The other way is by “slaying demons and eliminating monsters.”
It was quite ironic. The “immortal” sects constantly spoke of justice, yet committed heartless acts. They didn’t care if you were a good person or a bad person; as long as you were a demon, a ghost, or a devil, everything deserved to be killed.
Thinking of this, Lin Ruoxue couldn’t help but frown, her beautiful eyes gradually darkening.
Early the next morning, An He scrambled out of bed and jogged off to wash up.
Lin Ruoxue had risen even earlier and had already prepared the wash water; right now, she had gone down to make breakfast.
Standing by the basin, An He splashed water on her face while telling the System that she had vaguely thought of a plan in her dazed state last night. Even if it might not prevent a tragedy, it could, to a certain extent, help identify the killer’s location.
The System responded and asked what the plan was.
“Have you seen Kung Fu?” An He said. “Whenever those gangs have a shootout, they have to call for backup. They pull something out of their pocket, give it a tug…”
“Oh, you mean the ‘Whish! Bang! Sparkle-sparkle’ thing…”
“Yes, yes, exactly that.” An He nodded with a smile. “Your onomatopoeia is quite on point.”
While she was talking to the System, Lin Ruoxue entered the room carrying breakfast. After washing her face, An He hurried to tell her about the plan.
“Okay,” Lin Ruoxue replied, leading her to the table to sit. “Eat first. After breakfast, we’ll go set it up.”
She agreed with surprising readiness.
“There happens to be a place here that sells fireworks,” An He said, chopsticks in hand, her eyes darting toward Lin Ruoxue. “We can buy a bunch and distribute them to everyone on the Ghost Street.”
“Mhm,” Lin Ruoxue nodded again, stuffing a mantou (steamed bun) into An He’s hand.
“After distributing them, we’ll investigate further and collect more clues,” An He continued, finding Lin Ruoxue’s behavior increasingly unusual.
As she expected, Lin Ruoxue agreed readily once again.
“This time… why aren’t you stopping me?” An He was stunned. She used the end of her chopsticks to poke Lin Ruoxue’s hand, her eyes full of suspicion.
“It’s nothing.” Seeing An He staring at her, Lin Ruoxue couldn’t help but smile gently. Her voice was tender as she spoke, “Whatever Xixi wants to do, she shall do. Naturally, I will comply.”
