A Scumbag Alpha Gets the Simp’s Script - Chapter 30
Throughout the night, Yu Jinzhao acted like a textbook example of a “devoted wife.” Whatever Pei Daowan said, she followed without question. If everyone hadn’t known that no one would dare impersonate Yu Jinzhao, they would have suspected she was a double.
Weren’t the rumors saying Yu Jinzhao was indiscriminate in her tastes, overbearing, and arrogant? How did marriage turn her into this? Could it be that Pei Daowan truly possessed some extraordinary means?
Liu Qingyi watched their interaction the entire time, her expression shifting through layers of complexity. She had been on high alert; Pei Daowan had mentioned earlier that Yu Jinzhao would be coming tonight.
Naturally, she didn’t care for Yu Jinzhao. Before this marriage, Pei Daowan was doing fine in the Pei family—well, the Pei family were leeches too, but surely better than Yu Jinzhao. Yu Jinzhao was the ultimate tyrant of Jiangcheng; her father at least cared about his reputation, but Yu Jinzhao was a standard-issue playboy. How else could she have forced such a marriage?
Now, seeing Yu Jinzhao’s behavior differ so vastly from the rumors, Liu Qingyi felt like she was punching cotton. She had planned to bombard Yu Jinzhao with hostility, but there was no opening.
She let out a worried sigh. Seeing that Pei Daowan seemed to have accepted Yu Jinzhao’s presence—walking arm-in-arm without a hint of displeasure—made her feel the world had gone mad. Was this still the Pei Daowan she knew?
After finally dealing with the guests, Pei Daowan found a moment to introduce Yu Jinzhao to Liu Qingyi.
“Qingyi, as I mentioned before, this is Yu Jinzhao. My Alpha.”
My Alpha!
Although Pei Daowan had introduced her to others, she hadn’t used those specific words. Hearing them now, Yu Jinzhao felt as if she’d been dazed by a sudden wave of happiness.
Liu Qingyi’s gaze was full of resentment. If Yu Jinzhao hadn’t been standing there, she really would have asked: “Sister! If you’re being threatened, just blink!”
Sensing Qingyi’s emotions, Pei Daowan felt helpless. That scoundrel’s reputation was simply too abysmal; she’d already tried her best to speak well of her to Qingyi.
Yu Jinzhao, unaware of the internal drama, noticed that Pei Daowan treated Liu Qingyi differently, so she showed her great respect.
“Hello, hello! I’m Yu Jinzhao. It’s a pleasure to meet you. I’ve prepared a gift, but since it’s a bit inconvenient to carry right now, I’ll have it delivered later.”
Liu Qingyi was full of suspicion. What for? No merit, no reward. She wasn’t that easy to bribe.
Pei Daowan spoke up in time: “Qingyi, Azhao really isn’t what you imagine. Those are just rumors. Don’t believe everything you hear. Even if you don’t trust her, don’t you trust me?”
Yu Jinzhao smiled with pure innocence, validating Pei Daowan’s words. Liu Qingyi had a bizarre hallucination of a harmonious couple.
Reluctantly accepting that Yu Jinzhao’s character might be “passable,” she still didn’t say much to her. Yu Jinzhao didn’t push; she fully embraced her role as “eye candy” for the night, being so obedient and well-behaved that she practically left her metaphorical tail wagging in Pei Daowan’s palm.
Afterward, Pei Daowan led her through more pleasantries and toasts. Yu Jinzhao’s face began to feel stiff from smiling. As expected, even though she could adapt to these occasions, she still couldn’t bring herself to like them.
Pei Daowan felt even more strongly about it; if she could, she’d never deal with these people at all.
As 9:00 PM approached and the guests were being seen off, the two looked at each other and shared a smile, exhaling in unison. An invisible bond of tacit understanding began to flow between them.
Having held back all night, Yu Jinzhao was itching to talk.
“Hey, do you know? That boss who started in photovoltaics? I saw him at the office a while back. He was acting like a total sycophant in front of Yu Xincheng. Seeing him today, he’s gotten so much darker.”
Yu Jinzhao paused to tease: “My first thought was, did he drink too much soy sauce? How did he turn so black so suddenly? Haha!”
Pei Daowan couldn’t help but laugh. She was amused by Yu Jinzhao’s abstract and nonsensical humor, her gaze turning doting and indulgent as she watched her.
“And another thing! That President Ma sitting in the corner? He spent the whole night eating plain steamed buns and didn’t talk to a soul.”
Pei Daowan asked with a smile, “You spent the whole night just watching these people?”
“Of course! I checked out every single person there. Since I couldn’t say much, I had to find something to do. You’d be surprised—watching all their little habits is actually quite interesting.”
At this point, Yu Jinzhao seemed to grow warm. She took off her blazer and set it aside. Her long hair fell loosely, and she unfastened the top two buttons of her shirt. She was beaming with energy, sleeves rolled to her elbows, her voice full of cadence. She looked quite dashing and uninhibited.
Pei Daowan felt herself being drawn in. Her eyes darkened, and she took a slow breath to steady her heart, yet she couldn’t bear to look away.
When Liu Qingyi returned after seeing off the last group, this was the scene she witnessed.
The two of them—one talking, one listening; one joyful, one indulgent. One active, one still. It was an unexpectedly harmonious and warm scene. Liu Qingyi slowed her steps, reluctant to disturb them. Pei Daowan looked to be in a good mood, and Yu Jinzhao didn’t seem as detestable as the rumors claimed.
Yu Jinzhao was the first to notice her return. She waved at Liu Qingyi with a smile. “You’re back! You’ve worked so hard today. Just a moment, I’ll go get the gift.”
Pei Daowan composed herself and sat up straight. While Yu Jinzhao went to get the gift, she chatted idly with Liu Qingyi.
Yu Jinzhao returned quickly, handing over the gift with both hands. Liu Qingyi was still a bit constrained and tried to refuse.
Pei Daowan spoke for her: “It’s fine, take it. It’s not anything excessively expensive, just a first-meeting gift.”
“Well, thank you then. I wasn’t prepared today; I’ll make it up to you next time.”
Yu Jinzhao didn’t stand on ceremony. “Sure!”
Pei Daowan checked the time. “It’s late. Let’s drop you off.”
Liu Qingyi gave a slightly ambiguous smile. “No need, really. My place isn’t far. I’ll take a walk back to help digest the food.”
Knowing she lived nearby, Pei Daowan didn’t push but told her to be careful.
In an instant, the vast hall was left with only the two of them. Yu Jinzhao felt her heart rate accelerate belatedly, hardly daring to look Pei Daowan in the eye.
While packing her things, Pei Daowan asked nonchalantly, “When did you prepare the gift? I didn’t see it.”
“Oh, when I met Li Jin today. I saw a mall downstairs and thought since your friends would be at the banquet, I should buy something.”
Pei Daowan’s voice was flat. “Thoughtful of you.”
I didn’t get a gift!
Yu Jinzhao was oblivious to the woman’s slight change in mood; Pei Daowan hid it too well.
“I’m so happy tonight,” Yu Jinzhao said.
“Oh?” Pei Daowan arched an eyebrow.
Yu Jinzhao started to giggle. “It’s a secret. I’m not telling.”
Tonight, she was brought to a semi-private banquet by Pei Daowan and introduced to her friends. Most importantly, she had acknowledged her as “My Alpha” in front of everyone. For the first time, she felt lucky to be an Alpha; if she weren’t, would she ever have had the chance to meet Pei Daowan?
Pei Daowan smiled but didn’t press her. She tossed her bag to Yu Jinzhao, unceremoniously treating her like manual labor. “Carry this.”
Yu Jinzhao wished she could work for Pei Daowan every day. She didn’t feel exploited at all—only the excitement of being rewarded. If she weren’t a mature adult, she would have jumped for joy.
Since Pei Daowan had been drinking, Yu Jinzhao drove home. She didn’t turn on the AC, instead rolling down the windows. The river breeze flooded the car, bringing a sense of wild, uninhibited freedom.
“Even if the future holds a thousand songs, drifting far along my path… even if the future holds a thousand evening stars, brighter than tonight’s moon… none can compare to the beauty of this night…”
Yu Jinzhao began to hum again. Pei Daowan didn’t recognize the song or the language, but she could clearly feel the girl’s high spirits.
“What song is that?”
“It’s a very famous song where I’m from called A Thousand Thousand Songs. It’s beautiful. One day I’ll play and sing it for you; it’s amazing.”
Pei Daowan agreed, her thoughts drifting. she wondered what Yu Jinzhao was like as a student, and how she was after graduation.
Did she often drive girls around and sing their favorite songs? Or would she take them somewhere secluded to paint for them?
Compared to Yu Jinzhao, her own life—both in school and at work—was unremarkable. Every day was a straight line between two points, without peaks or surprises. In school, she studied desperately just to enter the company early and take over her mothers’ legacy. She had almost no extracurricular life. After graduation, she was buried in business affairs. She had never truly watched a sunset, looked at a painting, or listened to a song.
Looking back, her life was only rigid and tasteless.
At this thought, the smile on Yu Jinzhao’s face felt inexplicably piercing. But the emotion had no basis, so she suppressed it and watched Yu Jinzhao secretly.
Yu Jinzhao was in a great mood. This was the second time she’d been this excited since coming here—the first was when Pei Daowan took her for barbecue. It seemed every time she was happy, it was because of her.
Yu Jinzhao began to show off her driving—turning, overtaking, drifting—all while keeping the beat of the song. She was driving a bit “lightly.”
“Drive properly. Watch the safety.”
The voice came from the side—not heavy with blame, but more like a kind reminder.
Yu Jinzhao complied immediately, her eyes curving into crescents. Like a big dog tamed by its owner, she was docile and obedient.
It gave Pei Daowan an illusion: as long as she spoke, Yu Jinzhao would listen. And she would keep listening…
