After Falling in Love with the Scum Alpha’s Beautiful Original Wife at First Sight - Chapter 11
Seeing that it was almost seven in the evening, Xu Qingzhi went into the kitchen.
As usual, she sent Shen Baiyi a message asking what she wanted for dinner. In reality, however, she had already put some water on to boil, preparing to casually cook a few wontons for herself.
Barring any surprises, Shen Baiyi would reply in a few minutes with two sentences. One would be that she had to work overtime tonight, and the other would be telling Xu Qingzhi to eat by herself and not wait for her.
But just as Xu Qingzhi was about to drop the wontons into the water, a sound suddenly came from the living room.
Xu Qingzhi instinctively ran out toward the sound, only to see large and small bags of things placed beside Shen Baiyi’s feet as she was closing the door.
She was startled. Shen Baiyi had actually come home so early today.
“Why did you get off work so early today? I thought you’d have to work overtime again.”
Shen Baiyi had just closed the door. When she turned and saw Xu Qingzhi standing not far away with surprise written all over her face, she smiled while bending down to change into slippers.
“Listen to what you’re saying. I work overtime at the company every day. How many days has it been since I last ate a meal with you? Today, my leader still wanted me to work overtime, but I talked back and refused. I said I finally managed to marry a wife, yet I leave her at home every day and never have time to accompany her. What would I do if she ran away one day?”
Xu Qingzhi laughed with a pfft.
Hearing this kind of thing made her feel a little embarrassed.
“What are these? Things you bought?”
Xu Qingzhi stepped forward and curiously looked through the bags Shen Baiyi had brought back.
As soon as she opened one of the bags, she saw two large boxes of strawberries placed at the very top.
Although strawberries had already been on the market for some time, Xu Qingzhi still felt they were too expensive. She had only ever bought a dozen or twenty from the fruit shop at the entrance of the residential complex. She had not expected Shen Baiyi to bring back two large boxes.
“So—so expensive!” After seeing the label stuck to the surface of the box, Xu Qingzhi was greatly shocked.
“Why did you buy so many strawberries?”
Her reaction seemed to exceed Shen Baiyi’s expectations a little. Shen Baiyi froze for a moment, and when she looked at her, there was a bit of grievance in her eyes. “Don’t you… like eating strawberries?”
Xu Qingzhi’s breath caught.
“Even then, there was no need to buy so many. Just buying a few would’ve been enough. Besides, these big strawberries aren’t sweet. It’s better to buy the small ones from the fruit shop at the entrance of the complex. The tiny ones are very sweet and delicious.”
As Xu Qingzhi spoke, she organized the bags. Shen Baiyi suddenly squatted down and pinched her cheek.
“Wife, you’re kind of cute when you nag.”
Xu Qingzhi had no defense against her sudden action. She instinctively looked up and met Shen Baiyi’s smiling eyes.
Xu Qingzhi hurriedly looked away, not knowing what to say. She could only say, “Next time, if you buy all these random and expensive things again, I really will scold you.”
“I know, I know.”
Shen Baiyi clearly had no intention of repenting. She took off her heavy coat and decided to go to the bathroom to take a shower first.
But as soon as she entered the bathroom, she came back out again. “Qingzhi, why is everything in the bathroom so messy?”
Xu Qingzhi had not expected Shen Baiyi to actually come home for dinner tonight. She was busy washing vegetables and cooking. Only when she heard Shen Baiyi’s voice did she remember that, in order to find the lost turquoise knot, she had turned the house over once, and the bathroom was the only place she had not yet had time to tidy.
“Oh, I lost something. When I was looking for it, I made a mess of the bathroom and then forgot to clean it up,” Xu Qingzhi said apologetically.
“What did you lose? Did you find it?”
At the thought of her turquoise knot, Xu Qingzhi could not help sighing. “It’s the turquoise knot that was hanging on my handbag. I don’t know where I lost it.”
Shen Baiyi had some impression of it. She blurted out, “Isn’t that a keepsake your mother left you?”
Xu Qingzhi had not expected her to remember. Her heart felt sour, and she vaguely felt something rising and rolling deep inside her.
She lowered her face and gave a soft hum.
“It’s fine. I’ll help you look for it later,” Shen Baiyi comforted her. “If we can’t find it, I’ll make one for you with my own hands, exactly the same as the original, so you can still carry it with you.”
Her tone sounded incomparably serious. Xu Qingzhi could not help raising her eyes to look at her, and for a moment, she actually felt as if Shen Baiyi’s entire body was surrounded by a layer of gentle light.
Shen Baiyi stepped forward and wrapped an arm around her shoulders, lowering her voice beside Xu Qingzhi’s ear.
“When we got married, in front of your mother’s gravestone, I promised your mother.”
“I’ll take care of you in her place.”
—
The hour hand pointed to eleven.
Xu Qingzhi had class the next morning, so she did not dare stay up late.
Shen Baiyi, however, suddenly had some work to handle and was typing away at the computer that belonged exclusively to her in the study.
Before returning to her room to sleep, Xu Qingzhi brought her a cup of warm milk and placed it by her hand.
“Rest early.”
Facing Xu Qingzhi’s reminder, Shen Baiyi seemed to enjoy it immensely. “I know. I’ll be done soon. You should rest early too.”
Xu Qingzhi gently closed the door behind her.
The instant the door fully closed, the gentle smile on Shen Baiyi’s face immediately disappeared. She stretched, and the phone on the desk lit up at just the right moment.
Shen Baiyi answered the call, her tone lazy.
“Aunt, is the news about that old house being demolished soon actually reliable?”
