After The Cannon Fodder Died, She Became The Female Lead’s White Moonlight (GL) - Chapter 28.1
Perhaps that day’s incident had truly hurt Shen Sijin. Che Gulai noticed she was a little quieter, and her messages were no longer as cute, soft, or sweet as before. Che Gulai was skilled at reading people. From just a few of Shen Sijin’s texts, she could detect the stiffness behind the words.
Why?
Is she that angry?
Che Gulai couldn’t understand. In her view, Shen Sijin was completely overreacting. She used to think she was obedient, but it was just a sign of an overly childish mentality.
Che Gulai was inexplicably irritated.
She found it ironic. Who was Shen Sijin to dare give her attitude? This was completely outside of Che Gulai’s control.
After Shen Sijin finished work, Che Gulai drove to pick her up, intending to take her somewhere. Shen Sijin initially resisted, but Che Gulai’s attitude was dominant, and Shen Sijin couldn’t refuse.
The place Che Gulai took Shen Sijin was an awards ceremony. There would be many related business magnates and major celebrities—in short, a massive crowd.
Che Gulai knew Shen Sijin was somewhat afraid of such events. She deliberately exploited this, wanting Shen Sijin to become utterly dependent on her in this moment, intending to curb her childish temper.
Che Gulai disliked Shen Sijin’s spoiled behavior. In her eyes, Shen Sijin was merely a low-life, insignificant lunatic. Since she had chosen to fall in love with her, she should focus all her attention on Che Gulai, become her obedient little dog, and eventually be abandoned and left in tears.
What right did she have to be willful?
Only those who are loved can be willful. Shen Sijin was not.
So Che Gulai found it laughable.
“Why did you bring me here?” Shen Sijin looked at the densely packed crowd, wanting to leave.
“To accompany me,” Che Gulai said perfunctorily, walking ahead. “Follow me.”
Shen Sijin pressed her lips together. After a moment of hesitation, she lifted her foot and followed.
The awards ceremony hadn’t started yet. Many people were flattering each other and chatting. Che Gulai was busy talking to others, leaving Shen Sijin alone in a corner.
Everyone here was glamorous. Shen Sijin felt out of place. She disliked such business gatherings and tried to shrink into the corner as much as possible.
Che Gulai glanced at Shen Sijin out of the corner of her eye. The corner of her mouth lifted slightly, and then she continued talking to others.
The speakers in the hall were loud. The one next to Shen Sijin seemed to be broken, constantly buzzing, making Shen Sijin’s heart pound quickly and ache dully.
A staff member came to adjust the speaker. The buzzing sound grew louder, long and sharp.
Shen Sijin’s ears were hit with waves of sharp tinnitus, like a thin, long needle repeatedly jabbing inside her ear. She covered her ears, trying to block out the ringing.
The staff member noticed her abnormality and kindly asked, “What’s wrong?”
Shen Sijin felt someone talking to her. She looked up but saw a blurry, grotesque face. She couldn’t make out the features at all.
She was terrified and took a step back.
She looked at the people in the hall again. Everyone’s face was blurred and indistinct. Shen Sijin felt utterly uneasy.
It’s happening again.
These people are back.
Shen Sijin wanted to leave, but her feet were completely paralyzed. She couldn’t even speak.
Che Gulai had been secretly observing Shen Sijin. Seeing her expression change, she felt it was the right time.
The lesson has been learned.
Che Gulai walked over. “Shen Sijin.”
Shen Sijin’s ears were too noisy. She couldn’t hear anyone talking, so she didn’t hear Che Gulai’s voice.
Che Gulai saw her ignoring her and thought she was still sulking. Shen Sijin had been quiet and sullen when she arrived, too.
She found it utterly boring.
She had expected Shen Sijin to be scared and become dependent on her in this setting.
Instead, she was still throwing a tantrum.
How could she stay angry for so long?
Gradually, Che Gulai grew impatient.
She turned, planning to ignore her.
Shen Sijin suddenly grabbed her sleeve. Her vision was still blurry and gray, but she recognized Che Gulai by feeling. She clung to her like a drowning person grabbing a straw. “Che Gulai, I want to leave this place.”
“These people are so scary. I want to leave. Take me out.”
The noise in the hall was too loud. Che Gulai didn’t notice the tremor in Shen Sijin’s voice.
She smiled, thinking she had succeeded. She leaned closer to her. “Are you still angry?”
Shen Sijin only wanted to leave. Her brain didn’t process the question. “No, I’m not angry.”
“Then you’ll depend completely on me, won’t you?”
Depend completely on me, and then be abandoned by me.
Shen Sijin nodded frantically, clutching her sleeve even tighter. “Gulai, I want to leave here.”
“Alright, I’ll take you away.”
Che Gulai led Shen Sijin toward the lounge. Just as she was about to open the door, Chen Youfan walked toward them.
“Sister.”
Chen Youfan was also attending the event today. Seeing Che Gulai, he had been following her.
“Chen Youfan, are you following me?” Che Gulai said coldly.
Chen Youfan.
Shen Sijin looked at the man opposite her.
She remembered who he was—the second male lead of this book.
In the book, the second male lead was a smiling yandere, extremely possessive of the female lead, and a romantic rival to the male lead. He had once used disgraceful methods to almost destroy the female lead.
She had almost forgotten there was another second male lead fixated on Che Gulai. Perhaps fearing Che Gulai might waver, she secretly gripped Che Gulai’s hand tighter.
Che Gulai glanced at her out of the corner of her eye but didn’t shake her off.
Chen Youfan’s gaze lingered between the two of them. For some reason, they gave him a strange, ambiguous feeling.
Chen Youfan couldn’t quite place it, but he found Shen Sijin an eyesore. He felt anyone who got close to Che Gulai, male or female, deserved to die.
Che Gulai sensed his dark gaze on Shen Sijin and was inexplicably displeased. “What are your dog eyes looking at?”
Chen Youfan shrugged. “Don’t be angry, Sister. I have something to tell you.”
“I don’t want to hear it.” Saying that, she tried to walk into the room.
“Sang He,” Chen Youfan drew out his voice. “Who is that? She seems like a perfectly healthy girl.”
Che Gulai’s eyes instantly went cold. Chen Youfan was a maniac obsessed with seeing people broken. If he wanted to, he could do anything, completely disregarding the law.
Che Gulai’s eyes moved, and she realized something. “Let’s talk somewhere else.”
Saying that, she shook off Shen Sijin’s hand. Shen Sijin didn’t dare to be alone right now. She grabbed Che Gulai’s wrist, pleading mournfully, “Gulai, please don’t leave yet.”
Che Gulai forcefully pulled her hand back, ignoring the panic in Shen Sijin’s eyes. Her voice was calm. “I’ll be back soon.”
She pushed Shen Sijin into the lounge and closed the door.
Shen Sijin watched the door slowly close.
Finally, it was completely shut.
She didn’t have time for sorrow. She sank to the floor, unable to stand. The lingering tinnitus in her ears made her brain ache intensely.
It was still those voices telling her to die.
Since meeting Che Gulai and dating her, she had only experienced simple, quiet happiness. She had even managed to have good social relationships, like a normal person. She had rarely heard those voices anymore and was happy every day.
She had even thought the voices and the grotesque faces would never reappear.
But why are they back?
She didn’t understand.
“Ah—” Shen Sijin covered her head in agony, pressing her forehead against the cold floor. The tinnitus grew more frantic, almost piercing her ears.
Die quickly.
They are all trying to hurt you.
The voices said.
No one will ever truly like you.
You are an object of disgust. Go die quickly.
Her mother’s voice was in her ear.
Shen Sijin shook her head helplessly.
She wanted to say that it wasn’t true.
Someone liked her. She was capable of being loved. Her mother’s words were wrong.
For example—
Che Gulai loved her. Someone loved her.
The voices in her ear became even sharper, like hoarse, crazy laughter echoing, seemingly mocking her self-deception.
Her face was streaming with tears. She desperately longed for Che Gulai to return.
Like that rainy night, to choose her again.
Don’t abandon her.
Shen Sijin thought mournfully.
Gulai.
My ears hurt so much, and my head hurts, too.
This place is terrifying. Please come to me quickly.
Shen Sijin kept hoping the door would open.
But the door remained closed.
Like a trapped, dark mouse, no one would willingly come to save a mouse.
Her eyes were red and wet. Her vision, like a movie curtain closing, slowly turned black, eventually sinking into a silent stillness.
Her ears still hurt terribly, and the voices made her face pale.
She couldn’t endure it anymore.
Shen Sijin suddenly bit hard into her wrist. This was the method she habitually used: using physical pain to alleviate mental distress.
The sharper the physical pain, the slower she could return to reality.
She vaguely felt that Che Gulai might not return. It was a sorrowful realization.
She resorted to extreme measures to rescue herself, just as she had in the past.
Che Gulai followed Chen Youfan to a secluded corridor, asking coldly, “Spit it out.”
Chen Youfan thought for a moment, then smiled. “I forgot.”
“Lunatic.”
“I can’t help it. It’s so hard to get a moment alone with you. I had to use a little trick.” Chen Youfan stared greedily at Che Gulai’s face. “You care about quite a few people, Sister—first Sang He, and now that woman, Shen Sijin.”
“Who told you I care about Shen Sijin?” Che Gulai frowned.
Chen Youfan gave a long, drawn-out sound. “So you don’t like her. Then it must be Sang He you care about. That’s annoying.”
“Are you planning to hurt her?” Che Gulai stated, rather than asked.
Chen Youfan looked playful. “Who knows? Maybe one day I’ll kill her.” His tone suddenly changed, and he laughed cheerfully. “Just kidding. But if she gets too close to you, Sister, then maybe not.”
Che Gulai’s eyes were jet-black. She suddenly smiled and said slowly, “Have you killed so few people? I heard your assistant committed suicide. Is that really the case?”
Chen Youfan’s expression instantly turned cold, losing its smiling facade. His demeanor was sinister. “What are you implying?”
Che Gulai leaned against the wall, her face very relaxed, but her words were chilling.
“March 12th, Xishan Villa, a necktie.”
Those seemingly ordinary words caused Chen Youfan’s face to lose all color. He grabbed Che Gulai’s throat, his features contorted into a snarl. “What do you know?!”
Che Gulai achieved the desired effect. Her expression was calm and indifferent, without a hint of panic. “You guess.”
Chen Youfan lost control and almost choked Che Gulai to death. Fortunately, people were walking in the distance down the corridor.
Chen Youfan released her. As he left, he said meaningfully, “Sister, I suddenly think a beautiful mute would suit you very well.”
Che Gulai touched her throat, the corner of her lips curving into a cold smile.
She had achieved her goal.
Chen Youfan, I will destroy you.
Che Gulai was about to head back to the main hall, but then remembered Shen Sijin was in the lounge. Just as she was about to go back, several former business partners pulled her aside and started talking.
Che Gulai couldn’t easily refuse. By the time she remembered she needed to go to the lounge to find Shen Sijin, half an hour had passed.
She wasn’t sure what Shen Sijin was doing in the lounge. Fearing Shen Sijin might be throwing a tantrum again, she grabbed some fruit to appease her.
Che Gulai arrived at the lounge and opened the door. Shen Sijin had just emerged from the restroom. Her lips were white, and her eyes were red.
“What’s wrong?” Che Gulai closed the door, frowning. Her fingers touched Shen Sijin’s red eyes. “Were you crying?”
Shen Sijin turned her face away, whispering, “I…”
She had wanted to pour out her heart to her, to tell her that she had heard those voices again. All the grievances in her heart wanted to be confessed to Che Gulai.
But at the moment she saw her, all those words got stuck in her throat. She couldn’t say them, no matter how hard she tried.
Why?
Why did she suddenly not want to say it?
Honestly, Shen Sijin didn’t know why.
“I cried watching the movie earlier,” Shen Sijin forced a pale smile. “It was too touching. I couldn’t help it.”
“So useless,” Che Gulai said, handing her the small gift box. “This is a box of fresh, high-quality fruit. I had the organizers prepare it especially for you.”
Shen Sijin glanced at the fruit inside.
Grapes, oranges—all fruits with seeds.
She remembered telling Che Gulai before that the fruit she hated most were those with seeds.
Did Che Gulai forget, or… did she simply not care about what she said?
She remembered all of Che Gulai’s preferences.
Shen Sijin felt an inner imbalance and grievance, but she didn’t show it.
Shen Sijin stared blankly at the fruit. Only when she heard Che Gulai ask if she disliked them did she take the box.
“I like them.”
She said so.
“Good, as long as you like them,” Che Gulai said. “Let’s go back.”
“Okay.” Shen Sijin nodded, subconsciously hiding her right hand behind her back, and followed Che Gulai out.
The sky outside was dark. Shen Sijin looked at the buildings flashing past outside the car window and suddenly spoke. “Gulai, why did you bring me here today?”
Che Gulai didn’t know why she was asking this, but she replied without changing her expression, “I told you, to keep me company.”
“You have Xiao Xu. She’s clearly more suitable for this kind of event than I am,” Shen Sijin asked quietly, her eyes lowered.
Shen Sijin’s voice was naturally clear and soft. No matter what tone she used, it sounded gentle, making it hard to detect any deeper meaning. So Che Gulai didn’t notice the strangeness in Shen Sijin’s words.
Che Gulai disliked explaining things, especially explaining trivial matters to Shen Sijin.
She maintained her patience and tried to keep her voice level. “We haven’t seen each other much lately. I wanted to see you. Is that not allowed?”
“Is that so?” Shen Sijin squeezed her right hand, whispering, “You brought me here only because you missed me?”
Che Gulai drove, humming an affirmative reply.
