After The Shared Beta Was Abandoned By The Scumbag Alpha - Chapter 10
“What did you… just say?”
“It appears you didn’t know either.” An almost imperceptible curve appeared at the corner of Xi Bingye’s lips before her expression returned to its usual calmness. “Never mind.”
Seeing Lin Xiaogu still standing there in a daze, Luo Yu gently reminded her, “Ms. Lin, please.”
Lin Xiaogu left the procuratorate building almost entirely on instinct.
The sunlight was dazzling, yet she felt cold all over.
She rarely went online. To her, her phone was more like a device used exclusively to contact Yu Baiyi. But now, with trembling fingers, she tapped the browser icon she had barely ever used.
Sure enough, Yu Baiyi was the number-one trending topic.
Lin Xiaogu’s hands shook as she opened it.
#Yu Baiyi and Lin Family Heiress Lin Ziyue’s Wedding Approaching?#
The first thing she saw was a photograph of Lin Ziyue sitting on Yu Baiyi’s lap.
Wearing exquisite makeup, Lin Ziyue smiled brightly as she sat intimately sideways across Yu Baiyi’s thighs. Yu Baiyi’s hand rested loosely at her waist. Under the dim lighting, the contours of her profile were blurred, making her expression impossible to discern.
When Lin Xiaogu scrolled downward, she found another trending topic.
#“Tear of the Deep Sea” Bears Witness to True Love! General Yu Spends a Fortune Reserving a Rare Sapphire for Miss Lin#
She tapped it.
The promotional article was written in extremely flowery language.
It has been reported that General Yu Baiyi of the military has reserved the final and most valuable item at next week’s auction through private channels: the “Tear of the Deep Sea” sapphire. This fifteen-carat, unheated royal-blue Kashmir sapphire possesses an extraordinarily rich color and miraculous clarity. Its estimated sale price is expected to exceed nine figures.
Industry insiders have revealed that General Yu intends to have this rare treasure fashioned into an engagement ring. This undoubtedly confirms the rumors of her impending marriage to Lin Ziyue, the heiress of the Lin family. The union of a top-tier Alpha and a top-tier Omega, accompanied by such a sincere and extravagant gift, can only be described as a match made in heaven and the perfect embodiment of true love…
The comments below were even more excited.
“Holy shit! The Tear of the Deep Sea! That’s a legendary gemstone! General Yu is really going all out!”
“They’re perfectly matched in family background and appearance, and now there’s a token of love of this caliber. It’s like a novel has come to life!”
“It must be true love! Congratulations!”
After reading only a few lines, Lin Xiaogu abruptly turned off the screen.
There were many more comments below, but she no longer had the strength to continue reading…
Lin Ziyue.
She knew that name.
The sole heir to a pharmaceutical conglomerate, the treasured daughter of the Lin family—one of the Empire’s three great aristocratic families—and a top-tier Omega whom the media praised for her pure bloodline and outstanding talent.
Her family background was equal to Baiyi’s.
Then…
What about Lin Xiaogu?
Had Baiyi not told her just last week that she would marry her?
Had all of it been a lie?
Lin Xiaogu did not know how she returned to that luxurious yet empty apartment.
She sat on the living room sofa and stared blankly through the window as daylight gradually faded into darkness.
Eventually, she heard a key turning in the front door.
Yu Baiyi entered and removed her military jacket. When she saw Lin Xiaogu sitting quietly in the living room, a smile naturally spread across her face.
“Baby, were you waiting for me?”
“Mhm,” Lin Xiaogu answered quietly, her voice muffled.
Yu Baiyi noticed nothing unusual. She walked over, sat close beside her, and pulled her into her arms.
Then she carefully took three sealed syringes from her pocket and waved them in front of Lin Xiaogu.
“Baby, look. Do you know what these are?”
Lin Xiaogu looked up at them before quickly turning her gaze away.
“Didn’t we have a wonderful experience last time? I asked Lu Ying for more of the new drug. How about we try it a few more times?” Yu Baiyi affectionately nibbled Lin Xiaogu’s ear.
Her warm lips pressed against the rim of Lin Xiaogu’s ear, her breath scorching.
Lin Xiaogu gently pushed her away.
She turned and looked directly into Yu Baiyi’s eyes, her expression unusually serious.
“Baiyi, last time you said that if I used this medicine, I might… undergo a secondary differentiation and become an Omega.”
Lin Xiaogu had never felt inferior because she was a Beta.
Not until the time Yu Baiyi took her on a business trip to the Fifteenth District.
At a banquet, in full view of everyone, Lin Xiaogu followed her heart, stood on her toes, and gently kissed Yu Baiyi’s cheek.
What she received in return was Yu Baiyi’s cold interrogation.
“Lin Xiaogu, who gave you permission to kiss me?”
Lin Xiaogu did not understand what she had done wrong.
She only knew that she had made Yu Baiyi angry, so she repeatedly apologized.
She was sorry. She was so sorry.
She had clearly been so careful, yet she still always managed to upset her.
But she had only wanted to kiss the person she loved.
Was that wrong too?
After they returned home, Yu Baiyi spoke to her very seriously.
“Lin Xiaogu, when we’re at home, I’ll allow you to kiss me whenever you want. But you cannot do it outside. Do you understand?”
Although Lin Xiaogu did not understand why, she obediently agreed.
It was only later, when she accidentally saw a trending topic, that she finally understood.
The topic had been about the two of them.
But its contents had mocked General Yu for having a Beta lover.
Only then did Lin Xiaogu realize that, in the eyes of many people, a relationship between a Beta and an Alpha was inherently wrong.
Their love had been destined to have no future from the very beginning.
That was why Lin Xiaogu had been so excited when Yu Baiyi took out the serum and told her that she might become an Omega.
She had imagined that one day, if she truly became an Omega, perhaps she really could marry Yu Baiyi.
But had everything ultimately been nothing more than her imagination?
Returning to the present, Yu Baiyi smiled and said, “That’s right, Baby. I asked Lu Ying. As long as we keep trying, there’s a chance you’ll differentiate into an Omega.”
But if she could not marry Yu Baiyi, why would she need to become an Omega?
Lin Xiaogu lowered her eyes.
Silence formed an invisible barrier between them.
Yu Baiyi finally noticed that something was wrong and frowned slightly.
“What’s wrong, Baby? Are you unhappy?”
“Did someone at the procuratorate bully you?” Yu Baiyi’s voice turned cold. “Seriously? Fuck, I’m calling Xi Bingye right now.”
“No,” Lin Xiaogu said.
“Huh?”
Yu Baiyi froze, then softened her voice.
“Then what happened? Tell me, all right?”
When Lin Xiaogu continued refusing to speak, irritation rose in Yu Baiyi’s heart.
She had rejected Lin Ziyue’s invitation and rushed straight home after work. She had not done all of that just to look at Lin Xiaogu’s lifeless expression.
Yu Baiyi’s voice gradually turned cold.
“Lin Xiaogu. Speak.”
The atmosphere instantly tightened.
Whenever Yu Baiyi’s expression turned cold, it seemed as though the surrounding temperature dropped along with it.
Lin Xiaogu’s eyelashes trembled violently.
After a long while, she lifted her head. Her eyes were slightly red.
“Baiyi… Is there something… you haven’t told me?”
“Hm? What is it?”
Yu Baiyi looked puzzled and thought carefully.
“Oh, there actually is something.”
Lin Xiaogu’s heart rose into her throat.
“What is it?”
“I forgot to tell you that I’m attending an auction the day after tomorrow, so I won’t be coming home for dinner.”
Yu Baiyi unlocked her phone, brought up the auction catalog, and handed it to her.
“Take a look. Which one do you like? I’ll buy it for you.”
Lin Xiaogu’s gaze mechanically passed over the expensive jewelry, antiques, and artwork before finally stopping on a sapphire ring.
The setting was simple and elegant. In the photograph, the gemstone shimmered with the tranquil brilliance of the deep sea.
She extended a finger and gently tapped the image.
“Baiyi, I want… this one.”
Yu Baiyi glanced at it and immediately replied without thinking, “Not this one. Choose something else.”
“Why… can’t I have it?”
Lin Xiaogu heard her own voice trembling.
Yu Baiyi frowned.
“Is there nothing else you like?”
“Look at this plate or this vase. Don’t you like arranging flowers? How about I buy you this vase?”
It felt as though an invisible hand had brutally clenched Lin Xiaogu’s heart, causing so much pain that she nearly curled into herself.
She bit the tip of her tongue and forcefully suppressed the urge to cry.
“Baiyi,” she called quietly.
“Hmm?”
“Last time, you said that if I behaved well, you would grant me one request. Does that still count?”
Yu Baiyi thought about it.
She had indeed said that, but it had been in bed—a casual promise made when she had been overcome with passion.
Then again, what unreasonable demand could Lin Xiaogu possibly make?
So Yu Baiyi hummed in agreement.
“It counts. Tell me what you want.”
Lin Xiaogu closed her eyes as though using the last of her strength.
“I want… that ring.”
“Lin Xiaogu!”
Yu Baiyi’s patience was finally exhausted.
“Why do you insist on having this particular ring? I already told you that you can’t have it. Are you deliberately trying to make me angry?”
Lin Xiaogu shook her head.
“Then what do you mean?” Yu Baiyi demanded.
The air became suffocatingly still.
After a long while, Lin Xiaogu raised a hand and wiped away the wetness on her face.
Then she lifted her head and revealed an extremely faint, exhausted smile.
“Baiyi,” she said with terrifying calmness, “I don’t want it anymore.”
Yu Baiyi pulled her back into her arms.
“Mhm. That’s my good girl. How about I buy you the vase?”
“Okay.”
“When you went to the procuratorate today, Xi Bingye didn’t make things difficult for you, did she?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Yu Baiyi laughed coldly.
“Don’t be fooled by Xi Bingye’s serious and respectable appearance. Her thoughts are actually unfathomable. I’ve known her for so many years, yet even I can’t understand what she’s thinking.”
“The more someone is like that, the farther away you should stay. Who knows what she might do? I truly must have been insane… How could I ever have agreed to let you work under her?”
Lin Xiaogu listened quietly.
After a long time, she suddenly asked softly, “How did you and Prosecutor Xi… meet?”
Yu Baiyi stared at Lin Xiaogu.
“Are you curious about her or about me?”
Lin Xiaogu lowered her head.
“Of course… I’m curious about you.”
“Kiss me, and I’ll tell you.”
Lin Xiaogu’s body stiffened slightly, but she did not move.
“Hmm?” Yu Baiyi prompted.
Lin Xiaogu lowered her eyes, leaned forward, and quickly brushed her lips against Yu Baiyi’s in a fleeting kiss.
“I kissed you,” she said quietly.
“You kissed me, but I’m still not telling you.”
Yu Baiyi bit Lin Xiaogu’s ear twice.
“Baby, you’re not allowed to mention her in front of me again unless you want to break up with me. Understood?”
Hearing the words “break up” still made Lin Xiaogu’s heart jump.
She nodded.
“I understand.”
“However… if you’re curious about my childhood, then later, in bed… I can slowly tell you all about it.”
That night, Yu Baiyi was surrounded by the peach fragrance of Lin Xiaogu’s pheromones and could not think clearly for a long time.
Perhaps because of the serum, Lin Xiaogu was unusually proactive that night—so proactive that even Yu Baiyi was briefly at a loss.
Still, she excitedly accepted the change in Lin Xiaogu.
As their passion reached its peak, Lin Xiaogu suddenly began to cry.
Her tears poured down, mingling with her broken breathing. Choking with emotion, she asked in a voice barely louder than a breath,
“Baiyi… will you love me forever?”
Yu Baiyi smiled as she answered, “Of course. Of course I’ll love you forever.”
Afterward, Yu Baiyi held Lin Xiaogu in her arms and gently kissed her forehead, repeating again and again,
“Baby, I love you more than anyone.”
In the darkness, Lin Xiaogu kept her eyes open and stared at the blurred shadows on the ceiling.
Her tears silently disappeared into her hair.
