After The Shared Beta Was Abandoned By The Scumbag Alpha - Chapter 5
Lin Xiaogu sat quietly at the edge of the bed.
After Yu Baiyi finished showering, she took the syringe out of the safe and began disinfecting the needle with alcohol.
“Baby, it might hurt a little. Just bear with it for a moment.”
Yu Baiyi walked over with the syringe in hand. She stroked Lin Xiaogu’s long black hair, then slowly ran her hand down to the slightly protruding bones of her spine.
Her heart ached.
“Why have you lost weight again? Haven’t you been eating properly lately?”
Lin Xiaogu smiled. “I have been eating properly.”
“Oh, right, Baiyi. Did you eat dinner tonight? There’s some almond porridge I made in the insulated container…”
“Mhm, mhm. I know, Baby. I’ve already eaten. Just leave it in the container for now.”
Lin Xiaogu paused, then lowered her head.
“Okay.”
At that moment, both of them were nervous.
Yu Baiyi brushed Lin Xiaogu’s long hair aside, revealing a patch of fair, delicate skin around her collarbone.
She aimed at the location of the gland.
In a gentle voice, she said, “Xiaogu, bear with it. It’ll be over soon…”
The instant she finished speaking, she raised her hand and plunged the needle in.
Lin Xiaogu’s body trembled slightly.
“It’ll be over soon, Baby. Just hold on a little longer. Be good…”
Yu Baiyi slowly pressed down on the plunger.
An indescribable swelling pain spread through Lin Xiaogu’s neck.
It hurt so much…
“G-Gentler… Please.”
“All right, all right. I’ll be gentler. Don’t cry.”
Although Yu Baiyi said that, her hand did not slow down at all. Seeing Lin Xiaogu tightly biting her lips in pain, she hardened her heart and pushed all the medicine into her at once.
“It hurts, Baiyi. I’m in so much pain…”
Choking back sobs, Lin Xiaogu collapsed onto the bed.
Yu Baiyi seemed to still be saying something, but Lin Xiaogu could no longer hear her clearly.
Gradually, Lin Xiaogu felt her body begin to burn. Waves of swelling pain radiated from her neck, while her entire body became painful and itchy, as though ants were crawling beneath her skin.
A layer of mist seemed to cover her vision. Eventually, she could no longer even see Yu Baiyi’s face clearly…
Everything before Lin Xiaogu turned black. Her hands flailed helplessly through the air.
“Baiyi, I think… I can’t see you clearly…”
Yu Baiyi grabbed Lin Xiaogu’s hand and exclaimed excitedly, “Baby, Baby, can you smell it?”
“Huh?”
Yu Baiyi wrapped her arms around Lin Xiaogu’s waist and buried her face in the crook of her neck. She breathed in her scent, then kissed her, unable to get enough of her.
“Baby, your pheromones smell like peaches… They’re so sweet.”
Lin Xiaogu could not hear what Yu Baiyi was saying.
It hurt.
It truly hurt so much…
First it had been her neck, then her shoulders. Now even her arms were unbearably itchy.
Lin Xiaogu lost control of her strength and scratched her arm forcefully, leaving behind a faintly bleeding mark.
“Baby, it’s all right. Everything is fine now.”
Yu Baiyi hurriedly restrained Lin Xiaogu’s hands, pulled her into her arms, and soothed her softly.
Her blood seemed to boil within her body…
No one knew how much time passed before Lin Xiaogu’s condition finally began to stabilize.
She saw the concern in Yu Baiyi’s eyes and smelled an unfamiliar pheromone scent in the air.
Could these truly be her pheromones?
She could release pheromones now…
Lin Xiaogu choked out, “I really… I really have pheromones now. Baiyi, can you smell them?”
“Of course. Of course I can…”
Seeing that Lin Xiaogu had recovered, Yu Baiyi pressed one heavy kiss after another against her body.
…
By the time they finished, Lin Xiaogu’s entire body was drenched in sweat.
The first pale light of dawn had begun to appear beyond the window.
Satisfied, Yu Baiyi kissed the top of Lin Xiaogu’s head.
“Baby, you worked hard.”
Lin Xiaogu heard her words, but she had only enough strength left to smile faintly.
Yu Baiyi gently patted her back.
“Go to sleep.”
In her dazed state, Lin Xiaogu suddenly remembered something and mumbled, “The day after tomorrow… I have to go on a business trip.”
Yu Baiyi did not hear her clearly.
“Hmm? A business trip?”
Lin Xiaogu nodded.
“Where are you going? Who told you to go on a business trip? Why didn’t you tell me about something this important?”
The string of questions left Lin Xiaogu’s mind muddled.
Although it might be dangerous, she actually wanted to go on the business trip…
“Baiyi, it isn’t what you think,” Lin Xiaogu said softly. “I’m the prosecutor’s secretary now. This is part of the work I’m supposed to do. Trust me. I’ll return safely, all right?”
Lin Xiaogu moved closer and gently rubbed against Yu Baiyi’s hand.
“Don’t worry about me.”
Yu Baiyi rejected the idea immediately.
“No.”
“I’m going to contact her right now. Who makes someone travel abroad the moment they begin a new job? Do you know how dangerous Country S is? Is there no one else in that entire procuratorate who can go on a business trip? What about that Luo woman?”
The barrage of questions left Lin Xiaogu dazed.
Although it might be dangerous, she truly wanted to go…
“Baiyi, it really isn’t like that.” Lin Xiaogu’s voice remained soft. “I’m the prosecutor’s secretary now. This is work I’m supposed to do. Believe me. I’ll come back safely, okay?”
Yu Baiyi instinctively wanted to refuse again.
But then she suddenly realized that Lin Xiaogu’s business trip would give her the perfect opportunity to handle matters concerning Lin Ziyue.
Perhaps it was not such a bad thing after all.
After thinking it over repeatedly, Yu Baiyi realized that the source of her inexplicable irritation was the fact that Lin Xiaogu had suddenly informed her about the trip without warning.
The feeling that something had entirely escaped her control…
It made her extremely uncomfortable.
“Forget it. Go if you want,” Yu Baiyi said irritably. “But this is the last time. If something like this happens again, tell me in advance. Don’t make decisions on your own, all right? Xiaogu, you need to trust me.”
“Okay.” Lin Xiaogu smiled softly. “I’ll listen to you.”
Two days later, Lin Xiaogu successfully passed her skills assessment and received the first employee identification card of her life.
Luo Yu handed it to her with a solemn expression.
“From now on, this employee card will serve as proof of your identity. With it, you may freely enter and leave the procuratorate building and all related office areas.”
Lin Xiaogu held the cool card in her hands. A deep sense of fulfillment settled within her heart, and she smiled sweetly.
“Okay.”
Luo Yu smiled as well.
“Welcome to the procuratorate, Secretary Lin.”
Lin Xiaogu smiled from the bottom of her heart.
“Thank you.”
After completing a few simple handover procedures with Luo Yu, Lin Xiaogu arrived at the helipad precisely at one in the afternoon.
The wind was strong, sending her hair flying around her face.
“Prosecutor Xi, the aircraft inspection has been completed. The route is safe, and we are ready for departure at any time.”
Xi Bingye nodded lightly. Her gaze passed through the crowd of busy personnel and accurately landed on Lin Xiaogu.
“What are the current weather conditions in Country S?” she asked calmly.
Lin Xiaogu hurriedly flipped through the documents in her hands and gave a clear report.
“Country S is expected to experience brief snow showers this evening. The winds will strengthen at night, but overall conditions are manageable and should not affect the flight.”
“Mhm.”
Xi Bingye nodded slightly, but her gaze did not leave Lin Xiaogu.
After a moment, the corner of her lips curved faintly.
“It’s been a while.”
“It has…” Lin Xiaogu lowered her head.
“Prosecutor, the aircraft is currently airworthy, the flight route has been approved, and it is time to depart,” a technician beside them reminded her.
“All right.”
Xi Bingye accepted a life jacket from the technician, walked over to Lin Xiaogu, and naturally reached out to help her put it on.
“P-Prosecutor Xi.”
Lin Xiaogu froze slightly, then hurriedly took the life jacket from her hands.
“I can do it myself.”
Xi Bingye hummed in acknowledgment and said nothing. Her gaze lingered briefly on Lin Xiaogu’s slightly flustered fingers before she turned and efficiently boarded the aircraft.
The helicopter rose from the ground, and the city below gradually shrank into a chessboard.
When they flew over the mountain range at the border, a breathtaking landscape spread beyond the cabin window.
Endless snow-covered peaks glittered with cold silver light beneath the sun. Clouds and mist wrapped around the mountainsides like belts, making the range resemble the spine of a sleeping dragon—majestic, pristine, and eternal.
It’s so beautiful, Lin Xiaogu marveled silently.
This was her first time flying in an aircraft.
The helicopter occasionally passed through turbulent air, causing it to sway. Lin Xiaogu felt slightly dizzy, but as she gripped her employee identification card, her heart was filled with sweetness.
Three hours later, the helicopter landed smoothly at a border airport in Country S.
The moment they disembarked, the representatives sent by the Country S police department came forward to greet them.
“Prosecutor Xi, Secretary Lin, you must be exhausted from the journey. Welcome, welcome.”
Lin Xiaogu quietly followed Xi Bingye into the car.
Country S was one hour behind their own country. By then, the sky had already darkened, and only a thin line of dim gold remained along the edge of the deep-blue horizon.
They first needed to settle into their accommodations before beginning work the next day.
After they arrived at the temporary residence arranged by the police department, their escorts hurriedly said goodbye and rushed toward their next duty station.
Lin Xiaogu secretly examined the rooms.
The furnishings were simple, but the place was clean and warm.
Fortunately, there were exactly two bedrooms.
Xi Bingye took out the supplies the police department had prepared in advance. There were several compressed biscuits and some cold sliced beef wrapped in aluminum foil.
She looked at Lin Xiaogu.
“Are you hungry?”
Lin Xiaogu shook her head, her voice gentle.
“You should eat, Prosecutor Xi. I’m not hungry yet.”
Xi Bingye frowned slightly.
A mournful wind suddenly howled outside the window. Within moments, fine grains of snow began striking the glass. They quickly transformed into enormous snowflakes dancing wildly through the air.
Almost simultaneously, the police department called.
Xi Bingye answered the phone.
“Prosecutor Xi, we’re terribly sorry. A northern cold front suddenly moved south, and the temperature has plummeted. There is now a severe snowstorm outside, visibility is extremely low, and all roads have been temporarily closed. At present, it will be impossible to reach the scheduled location. You and Secretary Lin may need to remain there for the time being…”
Xi Bingye’s tone remained even.
“For how long?”
“According to the meteorological forecast, if conditions improve, the snowfall may weaken tomorrow afternoon.”
“And in the worst-case scenario?”
The person on the other end hesitated.
“If the snow line remains stationary, this blizzard may continue for approximately three days. We’ll remain in contact and notify you immediately if the situation changes.”
“All right. I understand.”
After ending the call, Xi Bingye looked toward Lin Xiaogu, who sat quietly on the living room sofa, staring absentmindedly into the chaotic snowy night outside.
Xi Bingye raised an eyebrow. Her voice sounded particularly clear in the spacious room.
“Are you certain you don’t want anything to eat?”
Only then did Lin Xiaogu return to her senses. She instinctively covered her empty stomach, slowly stood, and walked over to the table. She picked up a compressed biscuit and began taking small bites.
“There’s also beef in the kitchen,” Xi Bingye reminded her calmly.
Xi Bingye herself picked up the foil package first and walked toward the microwave.
A short while later, she returned with a plate of heated beef and placed it in front of Lin Xiaogu.
“Eat.”
“Thank you, Prosecutor Xi…”
Lin Xiaogu thanked her softly. Under the dim lighting, the tips of her ears grew slightly warm.
Xi Bingye sat beside her and quietly watched her eat.
Only after Lin Xiaogu had slowly finished did she speak.
“Secretary Lin, the situation has changed slightly. The roads outside have been closed because of the blizzard. We may… be unable to leave for the time being.”
