After Transmigrating as a Beta, I Got Messed Up with an Alpha (BL) - Chapter 15
Pei Yule borrowed most of the books related to ABO from the No. 1 High School library.
He felt that his previous understanding of this subject wasn’t thorough enough, so he decided to be patient and study it carefully. He had more or less figured out Alpha Ruts and Omega Heats; what he wanted to research now was deeper territory.
He had read about Pheromone Disorder before. This condition could occur in both Alphas and Omegas. Among the most representative symptoms was the “loss of body regulatory function control.” Mild cases involved fatigue, headaches, or dizziness. Severe cases could result in unstable Heat or Rut periods, with pheromones leaking out uncontrollably, or more acute physical ailments like comas, drastic weight loss, or vomiting. Because there were so many clinical variations, they couldn’t be easily categorized. These cases required hospitalization and pharmaceutical intervention; while there were successful recovery stories, there were also cases that ended in death.
The mortality rate wasn’t low at all!
Pei Yule’s heart skipped a beat when he saw the death percentage. This ratio was comparable to the mortality rate of certain serious diseases. He frowned and fell into deep thought.
Huo Juan said the reason he acted that way was because of a loss of body regulatory control, and touching Pei Yule helped him calm down. Behind that calm face, Pei Yule couldn’t tell how severe Huo Juan’s condition actually was, but based on his observations lately, Huo Juan truly disliked physical contact with people. Even though Xu Yanxi grew up with him, he didn’t have any physical contact with him—yet he acted completely differently toward Pei Yule.
…Is it because Huo Juan’s symptoms are too severe?
Otherwise, for an Alpha who dislikes people to be so intimate with an unfamiliar Beta, it should have been unbearable for Huo Juan. Yet, he preferred to endure that repulsion to touch him, even using pheromones to make him submit…
Pei Yule could only conclude that Huo Juan’s actual situation was so dire that it forced his hand. Even if one couldn’t tell by looking at that face.
Pei Yule closed the book. He felt that reading wasn’t enough; he needed to talk to someone familiar with Alphas and Omegas to get a deeper understanding.
“Pheromone Disorder?”
After school, at a milk tea shop near No. 1 High, Fei Yisa took a huge gulp of milk tea, chewed on a soft pearl, and arched an eyebrow. “Why are you asking about that?”
Pei Yule, of course, wouldn’t casually blurt out Huo Juan’s private matters. Even if his relationship with Fei Yisa was good, it wasn’t a reason to broadcast it. He solemnly handed over the book he had been reading, specifically pointing to a page. “I saw this in the book and didn’t quite understand it, so I wanted to ask if you guys knew anything about it.”
Fei Yisa had seen Pei Yule’s studious behavior lately and knew he was interested in AO matters. He replied, “It’s hard to describe specifically. To put it simply, no Alpha or Omega would ever want to have it.” After all, no one wants their pheromones to be like a ticking time bomb, affecting every aspect of their life.
Pei Yule asked, “Is it very troublesome?”
“…Mm.” Fei Yisa nodded. His expression looked a bit dark for a split second. “It’s very troublesome.”
…Why does it feel like his mood suddenly dipped?
Pei Yule worried that he had overstepped by asking about something personal. Just as guilt began to rise, he saw Shen Pin reach over and rub Fei Yisa’s head.
“What are you doing?” Fei Yisa unceremoniously batted Shen Pin’s hand away. “You’re messing up my hair.”
Perhaps because of Shen Pin’s interruption, the expression on Fei Yisa’s face returned to its usual roguishness. Shen Pin smiled, withdrew his hand, and turned to look at Pei Yule. “I can probably give you an individual example of that.”
Wait, does that mean—?
Before Pei Yule could fully grasp it, Shen Pin continued: “I went through it for a while right after I differentiated in middle school. To be honest, it wasn’t a pleasant experience. Pheromone disorder often made me lose control of myself, accompanied by various painful symptoms. However, the after-effects vary from person to person. Some have mild symptoms. I was probably just a late bloomer who hadn’t mastered my pheromones yet, which led to a more severe situation.”
Shen Pin had pheromone disorder too? Pei Yule looked at him in surprise.
Fei Yisa grumbled, “It wasn’t just ‘more severe,’ it was critical. You nearly scared us to death back then.” They almost thought he wouldn’t make it. During that time, the Shen and Fei families were shrouded in gloom. Watching Shen Pin waste away until he was as thin as paper made everyone worry he wouldn’t live to grow up.
Shen Pin smiled slightly and rubbed Fei Yisa’s hair again. “Sorry.”
Fei Yisa shot him a look but didn’t say anything more.
Hearing this, Pei Yule was convinced that pheromone disorder was indeed a serious matter. He looked at Shen Pin, hesitant. “Then your current situation is…”
“It’s stabilized.” Since Shen Pin had brought it up, he didn’t mind being clear.
Now that they were talking about it, Pei Yule couldn’t hide his curiosity. “Then… how was it cured?” The books mentioned various treatments, but those were just theories. It was easier to understand by asking someone who had been through it.
“Cough!” Fei Yisa suddenly choked on his spit. He answered for Shen Pin: “How else? Medication. And once he learned to control his pheromones, it naturally stabilized. This guy is a top-tier Alpha; even if his pheromones get messy for a while, he recovers quickly.”
That simple? Seeing Fei Yisa speak so dismissively, Pei Yule felt even more confused. If that was the case, Huo Juan was also a top-tier Alpha. Was his disorder just starting, or had it been going on for a long time? Could the reason he hadn’t recovered be because he wasn’t taking medicine?
He murmured, “Can medication really cure it?”
“Not necessarily. Pheromone disorder symptoms differ per person. The effectiveness of drugs varies too,” Shen Pin said with a slight smile. “Only the person involved knows their actual situation best and what ‘medicine’ is most suitable.”
For some reason, Pei Yule felt like he was hinting at something.
He recalled that when he returned the new jacket to Shen Pin a few days ago, the Alpha had given him a look that held an unreadable meaning. Pei Yule didn’t know what it meant then, but he suspected Shen Pin had realized the clothes weren’t the original set.
Shen Pin’s gaze then was exactly like it was now.
Pei Yule knew Shen Pin’s personality was completely different from the book, but he still felt a trace of inexplicable tension when facing him, unlike the relaxation he felt with Fei Yisa. Perhaps because Shen Pin was a top-tier Alpha; no matter how much he restrained it, his aura was different from an ordinary Alpha, giving off a sense of pressure.
It was the same kind of pressure Xu Yanxi gave off. Even though that guy was always smiling and acting a bit lazy, he made people afraid to be too bold around him.
Huo Juan felt a bit different from those two. He also had a powerful, imposing aura, but perhaps because he had been hugged so many times, Pei Yule felt more “helpless” or “annoyed” than “nervous” or “scared” when facing him. He was annoyed that he couldn’t struggle and had to let the guy have his way. And because Huo Juan never did anything truly over the line and hadn’t reached the point of being truly loathsome, as they spent more time together, Pei Yule found he was less afraid. Even when the pheromones pressed down, he didn’t feel the same terror as before.
Aside from making his limbs weak, Huo Juan’s pheromones hadn’t actually harmed him.
Thinking about it, if he found the hugs frustrating, how did Huo Juan—who hated contact—feel? Was it possible he was forcing himself too?
“Only the person involved knows their actual situation best and what ‘medicine’ is most suitable.”
Shen Pin’s words flashed through his mind again. Pei Yule remembered being sick as a child; he didn’t want to go to the hospital or get shots, but he had to, or the illness would linger and keep coming back. If Huo Juan’s symptoms couldn’t be improved by drugs, it made sense why he would fixate on him.
Though he understood that point, Pei Yule still didn’t understand why touching him could calm Huo Juan down. Based on the world’s settings, he wasn’t an Omega and didn’t have soothing pheromones. This mysterious ability shouldn’t exist.
Since he had a question, when else would he ask except to the AO right in front of him?
Pei Yule asked the duo again: “Um, I have another question… if an Alpha falls into a state of disorder, is it only an Omega who can calm them down?”
Fei Yisa said, “Normally, yes. But there are special cases.”
Pei Yule’s eyes lit up. “What kind of special cases?”
“For example, if another Alpha’s pheromones are stronger than the one in Rut, it might force them to settle down.”
That had nothing to do with him, since he didn’t have pheromones at all.
Pei Yule pushed for more: “Are there any other possibilities?”
“Hmm…” Fei Yisa thought seriously for a moment and shook his head. “I don’t think so.”
From this answer, Pei Yule quickly realized one thing.
Holy crap. I’ve been thinking about all this stuff, but what if Huo Juan is just lying to me!
The next day, after a full morning of classes, the teacher for the final period went over time. While the teacher was lecturing excitedly at the podium, Pei Yule turned his head and stared at Huo Juan intently.
The subject of his stare had his head lowered, long eyelashes casting a curve longer than a girl’s. From the side profile, Pei Yule had to admit the guy was handsomely divine. A high bridge on his nose, superior contours, refined thin lips, and perfect brow bones—no matter how critical the eye, one couldn’t find a flaw.
No wonder he was so popular.
But seriously… would this person lie to him?
If he thought about it carefully, this guy had nothing to gain from lying to him. He was a plain Beta; if you’re going to scam someone, you’d scam a cute girl or a sweet Omega to get some “benefits.” Furthermore, if he were going to lie, why pick such a flimsy reason? It made no sense at all.
Conversely, if Huo Juan wasn’t lying, then what he said was the truth. As for why Pei Yule could calm him down, the reason remained unknown.
“What is it?”
Perhaps Pei Yule’s gaze was too focused, catching the other’s attention. Huo Juan turned his gaze to meet Pei Yule’s eyes and asked softly.
Just as he spoke, the teacher finally finished and dismissed the class. The noise in the classroom increased as some went to the canteen and others stayed to chat.
Pei Yule hesitated, then said to Huo Juan, “Today… aren’t we going to the physics classroom?”
Usually, he went unwillingly, led there by Huo Juan’s pheromone suppression. He thought maybe he should take the initiative for once. Otherwise, the problem would never be solved.
Huo Juan’s eyes flickered slightly.
“I’ve thought carefully about what you said.”
Entering Huo Juan’s territory voluntarily for the first time, Pei Yule first kept a distance from him to talk business. “Student Huo Juan, does touching me… really calm you down?”
Huo Juan lowered his eyes to look at the three-meter distance between them. His voice was deep as he said, “I have no reason to lie to you.”
Though that made sense, it was better to be cautious. Pei Yule wrinkled his nose, genuinely confused. “Why is it like this? As you can see, I’m a Beta. I shouldn’t have the ability to calm an Alpha down.”
Huo Juan stated the fact: “The fact is, you do.”
While the specific reason was unknown, perhaps there were simply people with special constitutions in this world, and he just happened to encounter one.
Pei Yule was silent for a moment. He decided not to argue about the “whether” and quickly came up with a new question: “Then, does it have to be the kind of contact you usually do to be effective? Can we change it to something more normal? Like holding hands, or a pat on the shoulder?”
Occasionally Huo Juan pulled his hand, but most of the time he hugged him. Did that mean the most effective method was a hug? That would be troublesome. If it were something more normal, it would be easier for him to accept.
Huo Juan gazed at Pei Yule.
The boy’s face was full of curiosity, without the usual reluctance. His tone was normal, lacking the initial submissiveness or the later irritation; it was just like how he talked to the Omegas who often came to find him.
Huo Juan paused, then said: “Come here. You’ll know if you try.”
The boy in front of him thought for a moment, seemingly finding the logic sound. Just as he had actively asked to come here, Pei Yule took the initiative for the first time, closing the three-meter gap until he was within arm’s reach.
And then, he attempted to reach out a hand toward him.
