After Transmigrating as a Scum Alpha, a Cold Omega Stole My Heart - Chapter 8
Standing before the bedroom door, Xie Shuyun was, to be honest, a bit nervous. She looked down at herself to check for any disheveled clothing, then patted her cheeks. Even though they had just interacted downstairs, she still couldn’t ease her tension. Xie Shuyun smiled bitterly—she hadn’t even been this nervous during her internship interviews back then.
She took a deep breath, raised her hand, and rapped her knuckles against the door.
After a long wait, just as Xie Shuyun thought she would be turned away with a cold shoulder, the door finally cracked open. Cheng Lingxue appeared, her body blocking half the entrance and obscuring everything behind her, giving no chance for anyone to peek inside.
Of course, Xie Shuyun didn’t dare to pry. Although they were both girls, the distinction between Alpha and Omega (AO) was significant; one couldn’t simply act recklessly.
“This is today’s homework. If you forgot to bring yours home, see if you want to photocopy mine, or just report to the teacher tomorrow and hand it in a bit late.” As she spoke, Xie Shuyun handed over the slip of paper.
“Mhm, thanks.” Cheng Lingxue took the paper deftly with her fingertips and gave it a brief, indifferent glance before looking up at the person still standing there.
“Is there something else?”
“Nope.”
As soon as the word left her mouth, the door closed with a soft click. Though it was closed gently, the slight draft it created ruffled Xie Shuyun’s hair.
The sense of rejection and exclusion is quite strong… Xie Shuyun rubbed her nose. Whatever, I’ll keep trying. I don’t expect her to open her heart to me; I just want a peaceful future.
The next morning, much to Xie Shuyun’s surprise, Cheng Lingxue was already sitting at the dining table, quietly enjoying her breakfast.
She had thought it would take several more rounds of persuasion before the girl truly compromised. It was unexpected, but she naturally raised her hand to greet her.
“Good morning. Did you sleep well? No physical discomfort?”
Cheng Lingxue glanced at her. Seemingly adhering to the principle of “silence while sleeping and eating,” she didn’t speak. Instead, she shook her head slightly, picked up a soup dumpling (xiao long bao), and took a sip of soy milk.
Her cheeks puffed out slightly as she chewed slowly. Despite her cold expression, her focused look and deliberate pace made Xie Shuyun feel that Cheng Lingxue was in a relatively good mood—the kind of mood one has when enjoying a meal.
Finding this other side of her is actually a bit cute!
Scanning the breakfast spread, Xie Shuyun noticed that the girl seemed to prefer Chinese-style breakfast; she barely touched the toast or bread.
Xie Shuyun sat down and pushed the steamers containing the dumplings toward Cheng Lingxue.
“We have P.E. today, so eat more to keep your strength up. If you like these, tell the maids so they can make more tomorrow.”
“…No… I’m full.” Cheng Lingxue finished her soy milk, set the glass down, wiped her mouth, and spoke softly.
Hmm… three soup dumplings, one fried egg, and a small bowl of salad… Calculating what Cheng Lingxue had eaten and comparing it to the data she researched yesterday, it seemed about right. Confirming that the girl wasn’t intentionally overeating or starving herself, Xie Shuyun finally picked up her chopsticks with peace of mind.
She finished off all the food Cheng Lingxue had left behind before extending her reach toward the other plates.
She didn’t notice that as she ate the leftovers, Cheng Lingxue’s thin lips parted slightly as if she wanted to say something. In the end, no sound came out. She lowered her head, her hair sliding down to hide a strange expression and the slight reddening of her ears.
The two once again rode together to school. Whether it was Xie Shuyun’s imagination or not, she felt there were exceptionally many people at the school gate today. The moment she and Cheng Lingxue got out of the car, eyes were fixed on them, accompanied by constant whispering, leaving her utterly bewildered.
It wasn’t until she ran into Shang Yan that she realized what was going on.
“Yun-zai, did you really carry the School Beauty around yesterday? It’s spread through the whole school! Everyone is speculating about your relationship.” Shang Yan watched as Xie Shuyun seriously placed gifts and letters from others into a paper bag, her face full of gossip and curiosity.
Shang Yan had seen Xie Shuyun’s change, but that was only yesterday. What could one day prove? Those people just loved to talk because their lives were too boring.
Setting aside whether Cheng Lingxue had feelings for her, Shang Yan didn’t quite believe that a “Master of Romance” like Xie Shuyun would give up the entire garden for a single flower. Just look at how carefully she was bagging those gifts from admirers—doesn’t that prove the point?
“What kind of ‘relationship’ are they spreading?” Having finished bagging the items, Xie Shuyun was also a bit curious.
“What else could it be? They’re saying you’ve fallen for the School Beauty. You came to school together and you carried her—that’s enough to shake the whole school.” Shang Yan paused, then pointed at Cheng Lingxue, who was diligently solving problems. “And you came with her again today. I guarantee you the news has already spread everywhere.”
“It’s not as exaggerated as you make it sound. Shang Yan, you’ve been reading too many novels,” Xie Shuyun said helplessly, shaking her head.
“You know exactly what your admirers are like. Who knows if those particularly extreme ones will do something drastic.”
Shang Yan’s words made Xie Shuyun stiffen. She had almost forgotten—she was in a book now! She couldn’t judge Cheng Lingxue’s situation based on her own common sense. This was the female lead!
The female lead had a strange magnetism for bizarre events. With the original owner’s numerous admirers, there was no guarantee they wouldn’t go looking for trouble with Cheng Lingxue.
Actually, it wasn’t just a “no guarantee”—these people had targeted Cheng Lingxue in the past. Xie Shuyun didn’t even have to guess; she knew her actions would likely bring a negative impact on Cheng Lingxue.
What a headache… If those people actually made a move, her favorability rating in Cheng Lingxue’s heart—which was already at rock bottom—would have to be dug through the floor to find any room for improvement.
“I’ll keep an eye out. I won’t let them act recklessly.”
Shang Yan blinked. Did she just realize something? Was Xie Shuyun planning to keep standing up for Cheng Lingxue? This was massive news!
She wanted to ask more, but the bell rang and the homeroom teacher walked in. She had to suppress her curiosity and turn around for class.
Xie Shuyun was distracted, wishing for the period to end quickly. Finally, the bell rang…
“Xie Shuyun, Cheng Lingxue, both of you come to my office. I have something to discuss with you.”
Damn… Teacher, how could you! Shang Yan watched mournfully as the two walked out of the classroom together, only to be surrounded by other gossiping students. She wanted to cry—she didn’t actually know much more than them!
Unaware of her childhood friend’s internal breakdown, Xie Shuyun followed nervously behind Cheng Lingxue. she looked at the girl and then at the teacher leading the way, praying for good news.
“Shuyun, Lingxue, there is a Mathematical Olympiad in three months. Since you are the top two in the grade, I hope you can form a team to represent the school and bring us glory.”
Xie Shuyun had participated in such competitions before and was willing to do it again. However, she stole a glance at Cheng Lingxue. Teaming up felt like a monumental task; Cheng Lingxue would never ag—
“No problem, Teacher.”
She agreed?! Xie Shuyun’s eyes widened. She thought her ears might be malfunctioning.
“Thank you, Lingxue. And Shuyun?” The teacher turned to Xie Shuyun and hesitated. The gloomy, arrogant expression she remembered had vanished; Xie Shuyun now looked like warm sunlight emerging from behind dark clouds, radiating a comfortable aura.
The teacher, who had been worried about the tension between the two, was stunned by the change. How did the little tyrant of the Xie family change so much? I haven’t heard of any major events in their family!
“Teacher, I have no problem either.”
Hearing this, the teacher snapped out of her daze and quickly pulled out a registration form and a small booklet.
“Here is the form, and the rules and procedures are in this booklet. Go back and read them. If you have any questions, come see me. I’ll provide practice problems every day. Since there is a team portion, try to discuss them together…”
After more instructions, the two finally left the office just before the next class, each carrying a small stack of test papers to be completed this week.
Seeing Cheng Lingxue about to walk away, Xie Shuyun quickly called out:
“Lingxue, wait a moment.”
Suppressing the discomfort of being called by her first name, Cheng Lingxue turned and waited for her to speak.
“The teacher mentioned a team competition and said we should discuss to build chemistry… do you have any ideas?” Xie Shuyun asked the last part while cautiously observing Cheng Lingxue’s expression. Although they lived in the same house, Cheng Lingxue’s attitude yesterday was still vivid in her mind; there was no way the girl would let her into her room.
Not to mention Xie Shuyun’s own room—the place where she had almost forced a mark on her. She wouldn’t dare bring that up.
After a moment of silence, Cheng Lingxue spoke slowly:
“Let’s go to the library on the weekend.”
“Okay, okay! The library it is.” Xie Shuyun nodded vigorously. She completely agreed. If she were in a private space with Cheng Lingxue, she felt she might suffocate from the tension; an open public space was much better.
Looking sideways at Xie Shuyun’s relieved smile, Cheng Lingxue didn’t know what the other was thinking, but she felt intuitively that Xie Shuyun’s thoughts were definitely about her—and likely quite rude.
A hint of displeasure rose within her, but she was also curious… Just what is this person thinking?
