After Transmigrating as the Abandoned Rich Wife O, I Turned the Scum A's Life into a Crematorium [Transmigration] - Chapter 27
Gu Bei pondered for a long time before shaking her head, deciding it was impossible for it to be Shen Siying.
“Cough, cough.” A small cough from outside the door nearly scared the wits out of her.
That sound was far too familiar.
Gu Bei didn’t care about the voice; she pulled the window shut forcefully and headed back toward her bedroom. Just as she was about to enter her room, she realized she was still barefoot, and the soles of her feet were aching from the cold. In the dead of winter, a midnight like this could freeze a vagrant to death.
Would the person standing outside catch a cold? Gu Bei wondered briefly.
But she immediately shook her head again. Why am I still thinking of her at a time like this?
However, Shen Siying let out a few more forceful coughs from outside, sounding as if she were about to cough up a lung. It didn’t sound faked.
Gu Bei turned back to the door once more, wanting to see what she was actually up to. She stood there silently, unaware that the person outside was also standing there, her back pressed against the door panel.
Gu Bei didn’t unlatch the chain lock; she simply opened the door a crack. The biting chill from the hallway and the dim light scrambled to squeeze into the room. Through the gap, Gu Bei saw a corner of Shen Siying’s high-end coat. Shen Siying was facing away from the door, flicking ash from her cigarette.
Feeling movement behind her, Shen Siying turned her head and met Gu Bei’s panicked and confused gaze. She immediately snuffed out the cigarette, turned around, and smiled. “Bei Bei, you’re not asleep yet?”
Gu Bei curled her lip. “What are you doing here?”
“I came to see you,” Shen Siying answered.
“There’s nothing to see.”
“Bei Bei, you aren’t wearing socks.”
Gu Bei blinked rapidly, her toes curling and uncurling against the floor. “What’s it to you!”
“I’m worried you’ll be cold.”
Gu Bei felt a wave of revulsion at Shen Siying’s words. “I’m not cold! Please go back, President Shen. Someone might think I’ve kidnapped the Great President Shen!”
Shen Siying wasn’t angry at Gu Bei’s sarcastic remarks. A sense of alienation filled her mind, leaving her no time to think of anything else. “But I’m so cold.”
“Oh.” Gu Bei knew she was cold. In the past, she would have cared, but now it felt unnecessary. “Then go home.”
Shen Siying showed no intention of leaving. She tapped her thin high heels against the floor and looked piteously at Gu Bei. “Can you let me in?”
Afraid Gu Bei would refuse, she added, “My car broke down.”
Without even questioning the truth of the breakdown, Gu Bei said, “You can call your driver to pick you up.”
Shen Siying replied instantly, “He has things to deal with at home, so I let him go back early. It’s so late, it’s not right to call him back out.”
Gu Bei rolled her eyes internally. Since when was Shen Siying so considerate? Besides, all it would take was one phone call and half the company would be lining up to do her a favor.
Before Gu Bei could process it, Shen Siying tried to push the door open. However, the old-fashioned chain lock held the door firmly to the wall. Shen Siying pushed twice, but the door wouldn’t budge.
After all, Gu Bei and Shen Siying were still legally a married couple. Even if they announced their impending divorce to the world now, no one would believe it; it would only cause gossip to fly everywhere, which might negatively impact the girl group’s image. Furthermore, Shen Siying was currently the biggest sponsor of the “Gu Bei Girl Group Studio.” Compared to Haolan Group, the sponsors Magna had pulled in were small-time.
With Gu Bei’s current resources, she truly lacked the ability to pay back Shen Siying’s money in one go. Combined with her parents—whom she’d only met a few times since transmigrating—and her grandmother, the Haolan Chairwoman who had always stood by her side, Gu Bei couldn’t maintain a hard stance.
As the saying goes, a drop of kindness should be repaid with a fountain. Gu Bei was someone who knew how to be grateful and when to yield. She said in a less cold tone, “Then I’ll call a car for you. Su Xiaotang has experience calling cars after midnight.”
Before Shen Siying could say anything, Gu Bei slammed the door shut with a “thud.” Shen Siying’s bloodshot eyes stared fixedly at the door panel, desperately suppressing the fire in her heart.
In the silence of the night, the sound of Gu Bei’s bare feet on the floor was especially clear. Shen Siying listened to the footsteps, savoring the memory of Gu Bei’s eyes—soft as spring water—her slender, fair neck, and her waist without a hint of excess fat.
She remembered that in the past, Gu Bei didn’t like wearing flats. To avoid looking too short when going out with her Alpha, the tiny Omega often wore “sky-high” heels that looked exhausting just to look at. Consequently, Gu Bei’s calves had no extra fat but were shapely and firm; right now, those calves were surely tensing up with every step.
When the door opened again, Gu Bei was holding the new phone Su Xiaotang had bought for her. She read out a license plate number. “A driver with this phone tail will be here to pick you up in five minutes.”
Gu Bei’s eyelashes were very long, brushing up and down as her eyes scanned the bright screen, and with every flicker, they seemed to brush against Shen Siying’s heart. Was Gu Bei always this beautiful? Shen Siying wondered. Why couldn’t she look away now?
“Bei Bei…” Shen Siying started, but her thoughts were interrupted.
“I’m taking a call,” Gu Bei said.
Shen Siying waited until Gu Bei hung up. After a few brief replies, Gu Bei turned around and met Shen Siying’s gaze. Gu Bei let out a yawn. “It’s been ordered. I sent him your number.”
After yawning, Gu Bei looked like a freshly ripened peach, her eyes shimmering with a few tears and the tip of her nose turned pink. Shen Siying’s heart skipped a beat. Gu Bei’s drowsiness gave her voice a slight nasal quality that made Shen Siying daze off.
Gu Bei: “President Shen, you can go now.”
Shen Siying really just wanted to see Gu Bei once; it felt like seeing her once would allow her to sleep well. At least in the past, there was someone waiting when she got home every night, someone to serve tea and call her “Darling” sweetly.
Now, returning home to face Xin Mengyao—whom she thought she had been longing for—she was instead surrounded by a greater sense of powerlessness. Without Gu Bei, the massive house was like a beautiful shell that had lost its soul. She was used to her old life; she wanted everything to go back to the way it was.
Seeing she wasn’t saying anything, Gu Bei was about to close the door when Shen Siying said piteously, “Goodnight.”
The door closed in front of Shen Siying once again. Her head was buzzing. She couldn’t remember a single proposal submitted by the Marketing Department during this afternoon’s meeting, and she had even forgotten what time tomorrow’s meeting was.
Shen Siying walked downstairs and, not far away, by the rusted iron gate that lacked a neighborhood name, she saw a blue-and-yellow ride-share car. The car was a bit dirty, covered in dark splashes that looked like ink or mud. The engine was running, and it wasn’t in a parking spot, but it happened to be blocking Shen Siying’s Koenigsegg.
With a belly full of rage and nowhere to vent, Shen Siying’s face turned as dark as iron. The driver stuck his head out and waved politely, but Shen Siying acted as if she hadn’t seen him. It was too cold, so the driver ducked back into the car and honked at her.
That completely set Shen Siying off. Usually a serious, cautious, and orderly CEO, she actually slammed both hands onto the ride-share car’s hood, her eyes glaring with fury. The driver was bewildered; Shen Siying didn’t look like a drunk.
He finally got out of the car, intending to argue with her, but she took off one of her high heels and threw it at the windshield, then swung a fist at the car’s side mirror. Her strength was breathtaking; the side mirror twisted, and the glass shattered into several pieces.
The driver was so scared he scrambled back into the car. Seeing that Shen Siying had no intention of letting him or his car go, he didn’t know what else to do, so he called the police.
Although this neighborhood was old and dilapidated, its location was excellent—markets, schools, malls, and pharmacies were all available. Furthermore, the police station was right next door. The officers arrived in less than five minutes. Shen Siying’s rage hadn’t subsided; in fact, there were signs it was escalating.
The police were all Betas and didn’t know what was wrong with this crazed Alpha. They could only look at each other and say, “Please show your ID.”
Shen Siying rarely drove this Koenigsegg, so her documents weren’t in the car; they were being kept by Xiao Ye. Seeing a crazed Alpha without an ID, the officers immediately grew wary, pulling out their batons as if looking at a dangerous criminal. “Don’t do anything rash. Come back to the station with us first.”
Shen Siying’s lips curled up, her eyes looking erratic. “Do you know who I am?”
Among the officers, a young male Beta stepped forward. A hot-blooded youth, he despised those who differentiated into Alphas and used that status to bully others. “I don’t care who you are!” the young officer snapped. “Don’t act arrogant when you’ve committed a crime!”
“Ha!” Shen Siying couldn’t stand the provocation. A normal person would have backed down a little by now, but she insisted on being even more arrogant. “I’d like to see what you can do to me.”
The remaining officers, feeling the pressure of her presence, held their batons and told her not to cross the line. After a messy shouting match of one against many, Shen Siying was taken back to the station on charges of damaging public and private property, insulting officers, and disparaging the law.
Gu Bei had a habit of sleeping with her legs bare no matter how cold it was. She took off her pajama pants, put on her eye mask, and lay in her warm bed. In the darkness, she thought of Shen Siying’s face. Shen Siying’s recent abnormal behavior didn’t please her; instead, it repulsed her. It was the kind of repulsion one feels when a top-tier hunter simply changes their method of trapping prey.
“Today is a good day…” Gu Bei’s ringtone went off, singing desperately as if determined to keep her from sleeping. At the time, Gu Bei had just randomly downloaded a music app, randomly searched for a song, and randomly set it as her ringtone. For the sake of the debut, she had forgotten to change it. Hearing this song at this moment felt truly farcical and eerie.
“Hello? Who is this, please…”
“Is this Gu Bei?”
“Yes?”
“This is the West Street Police Station. Your husband is causing trouble in the old West Street neighborhood. We have her under control now, but she’s not in a good state; she might be entering her susceptibility period. Please come over right away.”
“Do I need to bring a bank card?”
“Yes.”
Gu Bei had no intention of getting out of her warm bed. She just muttered angrily, “Who’s my husband?”
The reason she asked about the bank card was simply because before transmigrating, she had been scammed. A scammer had called with a similar script, and being kind-hearted and simple-minded, she had naturally fallen for it. Consequently, she was now a case of once bitten, twice shy.
Before the officer could say anything else, Gu Bei hung up the phone.
“You pyramid schemer!” Gu Bei muttered before switching her phone to silent.
