After Transmigrating into a Book, I Became the Vicious Female Supporting Lead - Chapter 23
Lin Qiyan finished the math homework that was due for inspection the next morning, double-checked the group chat to make sure there were no other assignments, and finally packed up to crawl into bed.
The lights in the room were already off. Tonight, a layer of clouds obscured the moon, leaving only a few flickering stars.
Lin Qiyan wasn’t sleepy yet. she kept her eyes open, watching Mu Yunge sleeping beside her. The other girl’s eyes were closed; it was hard to tell if she was actually asleep.
Lin Qiyan felt a wave of emotion, reflecting on how Mu Yunge was the first person she met and the first friend she made since coming to this world. Moreover, Mu Yunge had helped her so much.
Her mind was a jumble of thoughts. Gradually, she grew drowsy. Just as she was about to drift off, a sentence popped into her chaotic brain without any context:
—That video was given to me by Xia Yiran.
Lin Qiyan snapped awake.
Mu Yunge knew Xia Yiran. He even trusted her enough to hand over such critical evidence. This meant the Shen family’s so-called “plan” might have been under Mu Yunge’s control from the very beginning.
A faint sense of dread crept into Lin Qiyan’s heart. Linking this to everything Mu Yunge had said today, her feelings became even more complicated.
Beautiful girls are also dangerous. Lin Qiyan thought back to that girl under the streetlight on the first night, looking so pitiful from behind as she clutched her phone. For the first time, she realized Mu Yunge might not be that fragile.
The clouds shifted slowly, and the moon emerged from behind them, bathing the city in a cold, silvery glow.
Lin Qiyan was fast asleep. Beside her, Mu Yunge opened her eyes, showing no sign of sleepiness. She watched Lin Qiyan calmly. Her eyes were placid—even a bit cold—with none of the warmth she showed during the day.
She reached out and twirled a lock of Lin Qiyan’s hair around her finger. Top-tier Alphas were, by nature, emotionally detached.
The next morning, Lin Qiyan rarely saw Mu Yunge still sound asleep. Hearing movement, the girl opened her eyes and sat up with a trace of lethargy, running a hand through her hair. “Yan Yan, what time is it?”
Lin Qiyan grabbed her phone. “Six-thirty.”
Mu Yunge leaned against the headboard, gave a hum, and closed her eyes again. Lin Qiyan watched her for a moment, fascinated by the novelty, before quietly throwing back the covers to get out of bed.
Through the door, the sounds from the bathroom were faintly audible. Mu Yunge sat there with her eyelashes half-drooped in a sleepy haze. After a moment, she got out of bed, stepped into her slippers, and casually gathered her hair into a high ponytail as she walked.
Lin Qiyan finished washing and went to the kitchen to make a simple breakfast. If it were just her, she’d have scrounged for a bite, but with Mu Yunge here, she wanted to put in a little effort.
After breakfast, the two walked to school side-by-side. The sun was already hanging in the treetops. As they passed the alley that was usually quiet during the day, Lin Qiyan suddenly heard a commotion.
Not far ahead, a middle-aged man was shouting loudly, spit flying everywhere. Neighbors were coming out to block him from moving forward while trying to talk him down.
“You mother and daughter are something else! Did you think I wouldn’t find you just because you hid here? You’re f-ing messing with me! You can afford to live here but can’t produce a cent?!”
“Wang Meihong, get your ass out here!! Don’t make me come up there and beat you!”
“Damn it, Omegas are truly f-ing bad luck.”
“You bitch, you moved here just to get rid of me so you could cheat? Get out here! F— your mother, with all these people watching, what kind of f-ing act are you putting on?!”
The crowd couldn’t hold him back. The man spat on the ground and kicked a small cart parked by the curb. Lin Qiyan looked up at the tightly closed door, pulled Mu Yunge, and skirted around them.
Mu Yunge followed with very little interest. Perhaps because she hadn’t slept enough, she seemed exceptionally drowsy today. The cursing behind them didn’t stop.
They ran into Tang Ziqian near the school gate. Seeing Mu Yunge, Tang Ziqian pulled her aside, telling Lin Qiyan they had urgent business and that she should go ahead. Lin Qiyan said her goodbyes and took the first step.
The classroom was already quite full. As she walked in through the front door, several boys who were huddled together gossiping immediately looked up. They held their breath, watching her walk to her seat with a touch of unspeakable “respect.”
Lin Qiyan: “???”
She caught a glimpse of Nan Dan out of the corner of her eye and instantly had a guess. She shook her head helplessly; she didn’t realize boys could be such gossips too.
It had rained yesterday, so this morning wasn’t too hot. Class 15 had PE in the afternoon. Lin Qiyan brought her exercise book, planning to find a cool spot to work for a bit after they were dismissed.
Rarely, the PE teacher wasn’t “sick.” He was full of energy and gathered everyone to run an “eight-hundred-mile” (800m) dash first. Amidst a chorus of sighs and groans, the students of Class 15 dragged their half-dead bodies to complete the distance between life and death.
The teacher blew his whistle, and the class was dismissed. Lin Qiyan’s stray hairs were stuck to her skin with sweat. She grabbed her book and looked around for some shade.
There were quite a few classes having PE. Lin Qiyan moved slowly to the innermost corner of the playground. The artificial turf was a vibrant green, and the sunlight fell through the trees in scattered, dappled patterns. Lin Qiyan sat directly on the ground, spread the book over her knees, and began thinking about a problem.
A gentle breeze blew. Some people were playing badminton, while boys and girls in sports gear played soccer on the grass. The sound of footsteps reached her ears. Lin Qiyan looked up to see Tang Ziqian and a drowsy-looking Mu Yunge.
Tang Ziqian marveled, “You’re so hardworking.”
Mu Yunge glanced at her book without a word and let out a shallow yawn. Lin Qiyan watched them sit down and asked, “Yunge, why are you so tired? Did you not sleep well last night?” She guessed, “Did I snore or grind my teeth?”
Mu Yunge: “No.”
She seemed truly exhausted, not even wanting to speak.
Tang Ziqian: “It’s the Rut/Easy-Access Period. Side effects of the suppressants. This batch of medicine is okay, just makes her sleepy. The ones she took before didn’t even work.” She recalled something and shuddered. “You’ve never seen how fierce Yunge can be. Too violent, a total anti-social militant.”
Tang Ziqian babbled on, “Honestly, anyone who saw her would think she was going to blow up the Earth the next second so everyone could perish together.”
Lin Qiyan found that a bit hard to believe. Mu Yunge lifted her eyelids and gave her a lazy glance. “Tang Ziqian, you talk too much.”
Because of the sleepiness, her speech was a bit slow and the endings of her words lingered, making her voice less crisp than usual and exceptionally alluring.
Lin Qiyan smiled at the sound. “Yunge, why don’t you lean on my shoulder and sleep for a bit?”
Mu Yunge gave her a lazy look, hummed a muddled “mhm,” leaned against her shoulder, and closed her eyes. As a faint pheromone floated to her nose, Mu Yunge’s tense nerves slowly relaxed.
Tang Ziqian watched the two of them with a look of pure novelty. Seeing that she had fallen asleep, Lin Qiyan moved even more quietly. She noticed Tang Ziqian staring and looked back, starting a conversation to fish for info. “Do you know Yu Xinxin?”
This protagonist hadn’t appeared yet, which was unusual.
Tang Ziqian: “Who?”
“Don’t know her.”
Lin Qiyan: “Hmm? You don’t know her?”
Aren’t you two the protagonists? How is there no intersection yet?
Mu Yunge’s eyelids twitched almost imperceptibly while her eyes were closed.
Tang Ziqian said disdainfully, “My lady doesn’t just know ‘anyone’.”
Lin Qiyan: “…”
A PE class isn’t very long. When the assembly whistle blew, Mu Yunge lifted her head, the drowsiness in her eyes clearing slightly. She shot an impatient look toward the source of the noise. She stood up and pulled Lin Qiyan up with her.
Lin Qiyan: “Yunge, do you feel any better?”
Mu Yunge looked at the concern on the other’s face and smiled. “Much better. Thanks, Yan Yan.”
Tang Ziqian clicked her tongue and shook her head.
After PE, most students were tugging at their collars to fan themselves. The moment they entered the classroom, they felt they had come back to life.
Lin Qiyan walked toward her seat. As she passed the front row, she paused.
The girl who sat in front of her didn’t seem to be here today.
