Chapter 101
It was 10 o’clock at night when Fang Bai returned home.
As Fang Bai changed her shoes in the entryway, Ji Yuning, who happened to be coming downstairs, heard the noise at the door and stopped.
When Fang Bai walked past the entryway and looked up, her eyes met those of the person standing on the stairs.
It was already very late, and Ji Yuning was still wearing her daytime clothes, a hint of fatigue on her face, indicating she had been busy until now.
The words Fang Maozhou had said in the afternoon lingered in Fang Bai’s mind. Feeling moved, she spoke to Ji Yuning first, “Just finished being busy?”
Ji Yuning: “Mmm, why did Auntie come back so late?”
“Had dinner with the old man and them.” Mentioning dinner, Fang Bai asked, “Have you had dinner?”
She was afraid Ji Yuning had been so busy she hadn’t had time to eat.
Ji Yuning nodded. “I ate.”
The simple conversation didn’t suppress the emotions in Fang Bai’s heart. On the contrary, with Ji Yuning responding to each of her questions, warmth flowed through every part of her body.
At this moment, Ji Yuning prepared to go downstairs.
But as soon as she made a move, the gaze lingering on Fang Bai made her stop.
She saw Fang Bai open her arms, her fingers pointing diagonally towards the ground, looking like she wanted a hug.
Fang Bai indeed wanted a hug. Her watery eyes looked at Ji Yuning. “Come here, let Auntie hug you.”
Ji Yuning’s eyebrow twitched slightly, surprised by the woman’s initiative.
Although strange, the situation was rare, and Ji Yuning didn’t ask any further questions.
The fatigue on her face vanished, and Ji Yuning stepped down the stairs.
When only one step separated her from Fang Bai, Fang Bai stepped forward and embraced Ji Yuning, her head naturally burying itself in Ji Yuning’s shoulder, without a word.
Their breaths mingled with each other’s body fragrance.
Ji Yuning had come downstairs to pour water. Her right hand still held the glass. She could only use her free hand to stroke Fang Bai’s back, patting it gently as if comforting her, her head tilted down as she asked, “Why is Auntie suddenly so enthusiastic?”
Embraces were the best comfort medicine. After a brief hug, Fang Bai’s emotions eased.
She released Ji Yuning, took a step back, slightly widening the distance between them, and said softly, “It’s nothing, I just saw those gifts you gave the old man.”
Ji Yuning’s expression remained unchanged as she asked, “Chairman Fang didn’t put them away?”
Fang Bai chuckled softly. “They’re all in my room, piled up neatly. I even took pictures, do you want to see?”
Ji Yuning said no, “I know what they are.”
Fang Bai thought of Fang Maozhou’s quiet grumble after she and Fang Maozhou came out of the bedroom, and the corners of her lips curved up. She said to Ji Yuning, “The old man said those middle-aged and elderly tonics are better off not given.”
This time Ji Yuning’s emotions shifted. She asked, “Does Chairman Fang mean I gave the wrong gifts?”
Fang Bai assumed Ji Yuning had misunderstood and chimed in, “No, he likes them very much, it’s just that he feels he doesn’t need them yet.”
A faint smile appeared on Ji Yuning’s lips. She asked knowingly, “My meaning is, if I gave the right gifts, would Chairman Fang tell me some news about Auntie?”
Fang Bai’s heart suddenly skipped a beat. No matter what Ji Yuning gave Fang Maozhou, he wouldn’t tell Ji Yuning anything without her consent.
She felt a bit guilty. Seeing Ji Yuning lean closer, Fang Bai took a step back, her heels touching the sofa wall.
Fang Bai sat down naturally and said to Ji Yuning, “Next time, just give me gifts directly, and I’ll tell you where I am.”
Fang Bai rested one hand on the sofa, crossing her legs at the edge of the sofa. Ji Yuning stood straight, looking down at Fang Bai, giving off a condescending feeling. Her originally cool eyes seemed even colder in their downward gaze.
Fortunately, Ji Yuning’s brow was relaxed, and the corners of her lips were raised in a faint curve. She said in a light tone, “I know where Auntie is.”
Fang Bai’s gaze was like silk, looking up at Ji Yuning, waiting for more.
Her brown hair was scattered on one side of her chest, covering half of her profile, the other side draped over her shoulder, the slightly curled ends teasing, along with the stray hairs by her ears, revealing a hint of languidness.
The temperature seemed to be rising. Ji Yuning finished the last sip of water in her glass. After the cool water slid down her throat, suppressing the heat in her body, she finally said, “Auntie will always be by my side in the future, no need to inquire anymore.”
Fang Bai had said it as a joke, so according to her thoughts, Ji Yuning’s words should also be the same, and then this topic would pass in a joke.
But hearing the content of Ji Yuning’s words, Fang Bai didn’t know why she didn’t follow the direction she had thought, but instead said, “How is that possible?”
Fang Bai’s smile faded a bit. “You can’t possibly still live with me after you marry your girlfriend in the future, can you?”
Fang Bai realized a few seconds after speaking that something was wrong. Based on her and Ji Yuning’s interactions, she didn’t even know Ji Yuning’s sexual orientation. On the contrary, Ji Yuning knew He Ziyan liked her, but whether she knew Fang Bai’s sexual orientation was hard to say.
There was no chance to take back her words, and it wasn’t on WeChat. Moreover, her voice was very clear, so there was no use praying that Ji Yuning hadn’t heard.
“Am I right?” she asked.
Fang Bai calmly stood up, her tone natural as she said, “Let’s just leave it at that for today, I’m a bit tired, I’ll go upstairs first.”
Passing by Ji Yuning, Ji Yuning’s silence relieved Fang Bai. She walked towards the stairs with light steps. Just as one foot was about to step onto the stairs, she heard Ji Yuning’s low murmur from behind: “Girlfriend?”
Fang Bai’s foot stopped in mid-air, paused, and then continued downwards. She heard Ji Yuning ask again, “How does Auntie know?”
Her foot returned to the flat ground. Fang Bai lowered her head, her features quickly wrinkling before turning to look at Ji Yuning, her expression unreadable. She asked, puzzled, “Know what?”
Fang Bai thought that as long as she pretended not to know, Ji Yuning would pretend nothing had happened, just like her.
But the usually shrewd Ji Yuning suddenly became honest. She said word by word, “Know that I like girls.”
Fang Bai pursed her lips. What was she supposed to say to that?
The air was silent for a few seconds. Fang Bai was still organizing her thoughts when she heard Ji Yuning say again, “Auntie too, right?”
Fang Bai’s eyelashes fluttered, a ripple of light in her eyes. Having promised not to lie to Ji Yuning, and with nothing wrong with admitting this, compared to Ji Yuning’s frankness, her further hesitation seemed a bit petty.
Fang Bai nodded. “Yes.”
A hint of interest flashed in Ji Yuning’s eyes. “Then why did Auntie ask Aunt Liao to set you up before?”
“How do you know it wasn’t girls she was talking about?” Because the previous conditions were harsh and hard to find, Fang Bai hadn’t mentioned one thing, and that one thing was the requirement that the other person be female.
Ji Yuning: “Oh.”
“?”
Oh? What kind of reaction was that?
Ji Yuning lifted her eyes, saying faintly, “Actually, there’s one thing I forgot to tell Auntie.”
“What?”
“That year, I forgot to send Auntie’s dating criteria to Aunt Liao.” Ji Yuning said half-truthfully.
No wonder she hadn’t received any messages from Liao Li. Fang Bai joked half-heartedly, “So you ruined my chances at romance.”
“Really? I think Auntie has plenty of admirers.”
Fang Bai smiled. “Are you teasing me?”
Turning around, “Going upstairs.”
••••
Back in her room, Fang Bai washed up and sat by the bed, looking down at the thing in her hand.
It was her old phone.
Ji Yuning had given it back to her today.
The phone was very well-preserved and could still be turned on.
WeChat showed many unread messages.
They were from Mu Xuerou, He Ziyan, and Liao Li. After sending dozens of messages and not getting a reply, they had stopped sending them.
Fang Bai’s gaze moved down, not seeing Ji Yuning’s.
Oh, right, she had left her phone with Ji Yuning, so the other girl naturally wouldn’t message her.
Three knocks sounded on the door, followed by a soft “creak.”
Ji Yuning appeared before her.
She was wearing that white short-sleeved shirt, her tied-up hair falling over her shoulders. It looked like she had just washed up as well.
Fang Bai said softly, “What’s wrong?”
Ji Yuning handed Fang Bai the glass in her hand. “Milk.”
Fang Bai subconsciously took it. She didn’t drink it, just glanced at the milk and asked, “Why are you letting me drink this?”
“Helps sleep,” Ji Yuning said.
She had brushed her teeth and didn’t really want to drink it, but she didn’t want to refuse Ji Yuning’s kindness. “Okay, thank you.”
Fang Bai took a sip, then looked at Ji Yuning and said, “You were busy all day today, go get some rest early.”
Fang Bai finished speaking and continued drinking her milk, but out of the corner of her eye, she saw Ji Yuning take off her shoes and get onto… her bed.
Almost choking on her milk, Fang Bai hurriedly swallowed and looked at the person who had gotten into bed, asking slightly surprised, “Xiao Ning, what are you doing?”
Ji Yuning knelt on the bed, her hands resting on her knees, her eyes tilting upwards. “Didn’t Auntie tell me to rest early?”
That was right.
But she had meant for her to go back to her room to rest, not on her bed.
Ji Yuning had already lain down on the other side, her slender legs crossed, one hand propping up her head as she stared at Fang Bai.
The moment her eyes met Fang Bai’s, she patted the bed beside her. “Auntie, drink your milk and then sleep.”
Fang Bai had the illusion that she was the child, but she still listened to Ji Yuning and drank the remaining half of the milk.
Fang Bai got up and placed the glass on the small round table in the distance. She didn’t get into bed but looked at Ji Yuning and asked softly, “Are you going to sleep with me?”
“Mmm,” Ji Yuning said in a deep voice.
In the past, Fang Bai might have agreed, but they had just confessed their feelings for the same sex, which was different from the previous implicit understanding.
Thinking this, Fang Bai spoke her mind to Ji Yuning, “But you know Auntie, like you, also likes wo…”
The person on the bed said faintly, “Does Auntie have feelings for me?”
How did she jump to that conclusion?!
Fang Bai quickly shook her head. “No.”
Perhaps shocked by Ji Yuning’s words, Fang Bai’s body suddenly grew hot, and even her cheeks flushed.
So much so that Fang Bai lowered her eyes slightly, not looking at Ji Yuning.
She wondered what kind of behavior had made Ji Yuning think she had feelings for her.
Lowering her head, Fang Bai didn’t know that Ji Yuning’s eyes were full of teasing when she spoke, not really asking seriously.
“Auntie denied it so quickly.”
So quickly that Ji Yuning didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
Fang Bai looked up and said softly, “Of course, I’m your auntie.”
Ji Yuning snorted softly, “Then what is Auntie worried about?”
Fang Bai suddenly understood. Right, what was she worried about?
“Then why sleep with me?” She wasn’t worried anymore, she was curious.
Ji Yuning changed her position, her head resting against the soft cushion at the head of the bed, her fingers smoothing out the wrinkles on Fang Bai’s pillow, saying casually, “Just used to it.”
Was she a sleeping doll?
“Can I ask Auntie a question?” Ji Yuning said again.
Fang Bai: “…What?”
Ji Yuning slowly sat up, her tone slightly hurt as she said, “Auntie denied it too quickly, it hurt my confidence.”
Fang Bai’s first reaction was disbelief. How could Ji Yuning’s confidence be so easily shaken? But when she saw Ji Yuning’s sad eyes, her thoughts wavered.
…Had her tone really been that harsh?
“What do you want to ask?” Fang Bai said.
Ji Yuning brushed the hair that had been messed up by lying down behind her ear, her cool eyes now containing an unreadable desire, and said slowly, “I want to ask, if you weren’t my auntie, would you have similar feelings for me, like liking me?”
Her tone was very faint, as if she really wanted to regain confidence from Fang Bai’s answer.
If she wasn’t Ji Yuning’s aunt…
Fang Bai silently repeated Ji Yuning’s question and looked at the bed.
Black hair, white clothes, sitting sideways with bent legs, fair as moonlight, cool yet not lacking in sexiness.
Like snow in summer, rare and hard to find.
With just one glance, she looked away.
Looking at Ji Yuning again, Fang Bai replied, “Yes and no, you’re too young.”
Ji Yuning looked down. “Am I young?”
Three black lines appeared on Fang Bai’s forehead. “I’m talking about age.”
“Hmm?” Confusion flashed between Ji Yuning’s brows and eyes. “Auntie seems younger than me, isn’t she eighteen?”
Fang Bai was amused and walked over to sit by the bed. “Weren’t you not eating sweets? How come your mouth is so sweet?”
Ji Yuning lifted her eyes, saying faintly, “Because I want to be liked by you.”
