After Transmigrating Into The Novel, The White Moonlight And The Female Lead Of The Abusive Romance Got Their Happy Ending - Chapter 6
“Huh? Me?” The tall girl froze.
Compared with her companion, she was unusually tall, and so thin that she resembled an unhealthy sapling. Her skull was long and narrow, and a pair of black-framed glasses rested on her nose. The thickness of the lenses made it obvious that her prescription was quite strong.
After a moment of hesitation, Wen Tang asked, “Have you experienced any symptoms such as chest pain recently? And is your mother in good health?”
The tall girl instinctively clenched the fabric of her faded jeans.
“I don’t think I have. As for my mother… I’m not really sure.”
“It’s all right. Don’t be afraid,” Wen Tang reassured her gently. “I still have other patients waiting, so you can stay here until I’m finished, or you can make another appointment and come back for an examination another day. Does anyone in your family have a history of Marfan syndrome? This is only a suspicion. We would still need to conduct specific tests before making a definitive diagnosis.”
The girl looked as though she had seized upon a lifeline.
“Doctor, everyone in my family is quite healthy, and I feel perfectly fine right now. It probably isn’t anything serious, is it? I still have to go to my part-time job later…”
Wen Tang did not answer her directly.
“If you feel unwell, especially if you experience any discomfort in your heart or chest, you must come to the hospital immediately. Understand?”
“I understand. Goodbye, Doctor.”
With that, she hurriedly pulled the other girl out of the consultation room.
“I’m sorry, but could you delete the footage of those two girls, especially the taller one?” Wen Tang turned toward Shi Nanqiao.
She sighed inwardly.
Hopefully, she had guessed wrong and the girl was merely naturally tall.
Shi Nanqiao smiled.
“Of course. We’ll do as you say.”
Just as she was about to ask why, the next patient entered, forcing her to suppress the question.
There were fifty patients that morning. Usually, before one person had even left, the next had already sat down and begun describing their symptoms. The consultation room was as noisy and crowded as a marketplace.
Sitting off to one side, Shi Nanqiao watched Wen Tang maintain a smile from beginning to end, patiently answering every patient’s questions. Despite herself, a measure of admiration began to grow in her heart.
Forget Wen Tang, the doctor actually seeing the patients—even Shi Nanqiao, who was merely observing, felt exhausted.
She remembered that Wen Tang was also on duty that night.
How was she supposed to endure it?
How strange.
In her previous life, Wen Tang had been extremely impatient with most patients from ordinary families. In the end, several patients had jointly filed complaints against her, and the hospital had been forced to dismiss her.
If Wen Tang had always treated patients like this, how could so many people have complained about her?
Shi Nanqiao looked at the straight-backed figure in white and suddenly felt that this enemy was becoming unfamiliar.
Perhaps she should observe her a little longer…
It was after noon by the time the final patient left.
Wen Tang stood and stretched before saying to the group, “Come on. I’ll treat you to lunch in the staff cafeteria.”
“That’s all right, Dr. Wen. We can find somewhere nearby to eat,” Shi Nanqiao declined.
“Food around the hospital is probably quite expensive. Staff members receive a discount when we use our cards.”
Seeing that Wen Tang sincerely meant to treat them, the others stopped refusing and followed her to the staff cafeteria on the basement level.
It was lunchtime, and nearly all the medical staff who were not in surgery had come down to eat.
When they reached the entrance, Wen Tang removed her white coat and hung it beside the door. After hesitating briefly, she deliberately took the pens out of its pocket and tucked them into her trouser pocket instead.
When she noticed Shi Nanqiao and the others looking at her in confusion, she smiled a little awkwardly and explained, “I’m afraid someone will take them.
“I’ve been back for less than a week, and I’ve already lost three pens. When I saw them again, they had somehow ended up with our department director. I was too embarrassed to ask for them back, so I have no choice but to resort to this…”
“So—” Shi Nanqiao could not suppress her laughter. “Those jokes online are actually true?”
“Half true, half exaggerated.”
Rational, professional, and approachable.
Without realizing it, the seed of doubt had already taken root and begun to sprout in Shi Nanqiao’s heart.
Only after carefully washing her hands according to the seven-step handwashing procedure did Wen Tang lead them to the serving windows.
The dishes were arranged on small plates, and there was quite a wide variety.
Since Wen Tang often ate in the cafeteria, she had already become familiar with the women working there.
When the cashier saw her, she asked, “Dr. Wen, we have some freshly baked egg tarts that haven’t been put out yet. Would you like one?”
Wen Tang’s eyes lit up.
“Yes!”
Then, noticing the three people behind her, she hurriedly added, “Please give me four. Thank you.”
After they sat down with their trays, Shi Nanqiao smiled obediently.
“We’ve really made you spend money today, Dr. Wen. Once the program airs, I’ll treat all of you to a meal.”
Wen Tang did not think much of it and immediately agreed.
“Then we’ll wait for our famous host to treat us.”
Wen Tang ate quickly but neatly. Shi Nanqiao had only taken a few bites when she noticed that the woman across from her had already put down her chopsticks and was preparing to enjoy her after-meal dessert.
The tender, sweet custard blended with the crisp pastry on Wen Tang’s tongue. Most people might have found the egg tart overly sweet, but Wen Tang ate it with an expression of complete satisfaction.
Shi Nanqiao ate slowly and chewed each bite carefully. Moreover, to maintain her figure, she only ate a third of her rice.
Afraid that she had not eaten enough, Wen Tang urged, “There’s no hurry, Miss Shi. Take your time. I don’t have any operations this afternoon, so I’ll only be staying in the department. I’ve always eaten quickly. You should try the egg tarts made by the cafeteria staff. I quite like them.”
“I’m a host, so I have to control my weight.” Shi Nanqiao pushed her rice farther away. “I need to maintain a good appearance on camera.”
She picked up the egg tart and took a bite. Her eyebrows immediately knitted together.
An overwhelmingly rich sweetness enveloped her taste buds. Since she preferred lightly flavored food, she could not really accept this sort of dessert.
After drinking some water to wash away the sweetness, she suddenly seemed to remember something.
“Dr. Wen, I left a notebook in the consultation room. I may need to excuse myself for a moment.”
“Huh? That’s fine. Go get it.” Wen Tang removed her identification badge and handed it over. “The consultation room is locked during lunch, so use my card to open it. The nurses over there have probably gone to eat too.”
Shi Nanqiao did not refuse. She took the card and hurried out.
“All right. Thank you, Dr. Wen.”
She jogged all the way back to the cardiac surgery outpatient area.
No one was there. Even the nurses at the triage desk and ECG room had gone to lunch.
“Beep—”
The consultation room door opened.
Apart from the computer, there was nothing else on the desk, let alone the notebook she had supposedly forgotten.
It did not matter.
She had never come back to look for a notebook in the first place.
The yellow medical waste bin inside the consultation room was empty. Shi Nanqiao closed the door and walked outside, searching through the trash cans one by one.
Not this one!
Not this one!
Not this one either!
…
Finally, inside the fifth trash can, she saw the familiar disposable cup.
More than half of the brown liquid remained in the transparent plastic cup. The sticker on its side clearly displayed the time and order—
Americano, less ice, no additional sugar, 7:46 a.m.
How was that possible?!
Supporting herself against the wall, she staggered upright as the world spun around her.
Had her memories been wrong?
“Drink an Americano. Don’t you women need to avoid sugar?” In her memories, Fu Xuan would forcibly take the latte from her hands and replace it with a cold, bitter Americano.
If Wen Tang did not like it, why had there so often been an iced Americano on her desk?
And why had Fu Xuan forced Shi Nanqiao to drink coffee without milk or sugar?
Furthermore, Wen Tang was not supposed to return for another two years.
Why had she come home so early?
Where exactly had things gone wrong?
Could her rebirth have been nothing but a dream?
Then when would she finally wake up?
“Shi Nanqiao!”
Wen Tang rushed over and gently supported her.
“Are you all right?”
When Shi Nanqiao still did not respond, Wen Tang helped her sit on the floor and took out her phone, preparing to call the emergency department and ask someone to come get her.
“Don’t…” came a weak voice, like that of a tiny kitten.
Someone tightly gripped Wen Tang’s wrist.
Following the slender fingers downward, she found herself staring into a pair of obsidian-black eyes.
What kind of gaze was it?
Confusion, hostility, resentment, despair…
It seemed to contain all the malice in the world, like an unfathomable abyss trying to bury her there forever.
Wen Tang finally realized something.
She had believed that she and the female lead were getting along well, but Shi Nanqiao harbored an intense hatred toward her from some unknown source.
Why?
Logically speaking, before the original plot began, she and Shi Nanqiao had no grievances between them. Why would the female lead look at her with such hatred?
“I’m sorry—” Wen Tang apologized instinctively, even though she had no idea what she had done to earn Shi Nanqiao’s hatred. “Just in case, let me take you for an examination.”
She stood and looked around, preparing to find a wheelchair and push Shi Nanqiao there.
“Great Dr. Wen. Wen Tang, I hate you!” Shi Nanqiao clutched her wrist so tightly that her nails seemed ready to dig into Wen Tang’s flesh. She sneered. “Aren’t you curious why I hate you?”
Wen Tang remembered the plot of the novel and sighed softly.
Afraid that her apparently baseless sympathy would expose her, she shifted her gaze away, naturally missing the scrutiny in Shi Nanqiao’s eyes.
“I’m not money. How could everyone who meets me possibly like me? Miss Shi, your health is more important. We should go for an examination first.”
“Wen Tang!” Shi Nanqiao raised her voice. Her normally sweet tone now held only the sharpness of an arrow tearing through the sky. “Do you dare swear that you have never made a mistake on the operating table and killed someone?”
“Of course I dare, Shi Nanqiao!”
Wen Tang was not made of clay.
She had repeatedly yielded earlier because she feared that Shi Nanqiao was genuinely suffering from a sudden illness. Now, judging from the strength of her voice, it was obvious that she was perfectly fine!
Even a clay bodhisattva had a temper!
Wen Tang would never dare claim that she was a saint. She had even told lies before.
But when it came to surgery, her conscience was clear!
“Miss Shi—” Wen Tang instead calmed down, once again becoming the lucid, rational woman she had always appeared to be. “I don’t know what misunderstanding you have about me, but I can swear that I have never betrayed my patients’ trust. Of course, if you don’t believe me, you may search for evidence and take me to court.”
Shi Nanqiao carefully studied Wen Tang but could not find even the slightest clue in her expression.
She had always been confident in her powers of observation. She had studied psychology at university, and after she began working, she would instinctively analyze the microexpressions of the people she dealt with.
It could be said that since she had begun her career, her observations had never been seriously wrong.
Therefore, Wen Tang’s situation was different from hers.
At the very least, Wen Tang had not been reborn alongside her.
Shi Nanqiao lowered her head and curled her lips in a place no one could see.
She had eliminated one possibility.
