Seducing and Flirting with Boss O While Stockpiling in the Apocalypse (GL) - Chapter 45
Su Rong watched this scene, the hand holding her knife trembling. The door to their room in 1502 was a standard interior door; under the combined impact of so many zombies, the panel had already begun to loosen. This dislodged screw was a sign that the barrier was about to be breached.
Once the door gave way, a horde of zombies would flood in. These things were fast, mindless, and relentless; there would be no escape. For the three of them, it would be a death sentence.
Feng Xi’s hair was a mess, and terror had left her body numb. The thought of being bitten and turning into one of those monsters filled her with absolute revulsion. She would rather jump from the building and drown than become one of those walking dead who didn’t even recognize their own kin.
The door grew looser, looking as if it would burst open at any second. Su Rong realized that staying there was simply waiting for death. After a moment’s thought, she rushed into the bedroom and ripped a bedsheet off.
Liu Lin, having lost all sense of direction, now treated Su Rong as her leader. She followed her immediately. Seeing Su Rong use a knife to rip the sheet into long strips, she understood the plan.
She quickly pulled open the bedroom wardrobe. Seeing some out-of-season undershirts inside, Liu Lin pulled them out, tore them into strips, and helped Su Rong tie the clothes and sheets together.
Feng Xi stayed by the door to monitor the situation. Seeing the door reach a critical point, her lips turned white, and she hissed a frantic urge, “What are you doing? The door can’t hold! The zombies are… they’re coming in!”
The words spurred Su Rong and Liu Lin to move even faster, sweat coating their necks. After a desperate search, they managed to find a coil of hemp rope at the bottom of a cabinet.
Su Rong felt a surge of joy. She tied the rope to the fabric strips with a tight knot. With enough length now, she called Feng Xi over to the kitchen.
The kitchen had a separate translucent glass door. Feng Xi shut it tightly. Su Rong then tied the makeshift rope around their waists—one long and one short.
She tied the short end to herself, while the other two were tied together with the longer end. Then, Su Rong secured the rope to the heavy leg of the kitchen cabinet with at least three knots.
The kitchen window was large and looked directly outside over the rising water. Su Rong grabbed the gas tank from under the counter and began smashing the glass. Shards fell into the water, and the gale-force wind and rain instantly whipped through the room.
When Nan Shuwan lived here, she used an induction cooker, but this apartment building’s facilities were dated; some older residents still used gas tanks. This one was quite old.
Su Rong found a bottle of disinfectant alcohol. She pointed to Feng Xi and Liu Lin, shouting urgently over the wind, “Climb out! Once you hit the water, use the rope to get into the hallway!”
“What about you, Su Rong?!” Feng Xi gripped her arm, her tone desperate. “We go together!”
Liu Lin was equally frantic. “She’s right, Sister Rong! Don’t do anything stupid!”
Su Rong didn’t have time for explanations. She shoved them toward the broken window. “Go, now! I’m right behind you!”
Hearing this, Liu Lin didn’t want to waste more time. She grit her teeth, nodded, and stood on the ledge. She reached out to Feng Xi. “Let’s go, Sister Feng! Don’t hesitate!”
The thumping on the door was deafening; they could hear the lock cracking.
Feng Xi’s eyes turned red as she fought back tears, her heart aching. She stole one last look at Su Rong before grabbing Liu Lin’s hand. The two jumped together, falling into the water at the tenth-floor level, instantly becoming soaked.
They didn’t dare delay—there were still zombies in the water. After a quick look at each other, they pulled the rope taut and used the wall for leverage to climb back toward the building.
At that moment, the front door of 1502 was completely breached. A mass of zombies surged in; those in the lead were knocked to the floor, while the roaring pack behind them trampled over them.
Su Rong was already on the windowsill. She held a piece of burning cotton, coldly watching the horde separated only by the kitchen glass. That glass wasn’t strong; it began to crack within minutes.
As the glass door shattered, Su Rong, standing high on the ledge, hurled the gas tank into the room. Several zombies in front were knocked down, and the alcohol-soaked surface of the tank flared.
With a flick of her hand, she threw the lighter and the burning cloth into the kitchen and immediately let herself fall backward.
BOOM. The gas tank exploded.
The force was massive; flames swallowed the entire apartment in an instant. Zombie remains were blown into fragments, and even the kitchen wall was blasted open. The stench of charred, rotting flesh was everywhere, and the explosion shook the entire floor.
The shockwave from the heat left Su Rong with ringing ears and a tight chest as she hit the water. She nearly coughed up blood, but she was alive.
Gasping and coughing, she saw that the rope had snapped in the blast. However, looking up, she saw Feng Xi and Liu Lin at the twelfth floor, waiting for her. They lowered a line. “Sister Rong, grab on! Climb up!”
A massive crowd of zombies had been concentrated outside 1501. The explosion obliterated nearly all of them.
Luo Sheng’s side was naturally affected. The shockwave dislodged the remaining few zombies and shook her door until it too broke open. The people inside stumbled; they were deafened for several seconds by the blast.
But seeing the zombies rushing in, everyone’s faces went pale. Nan Chu acted first, swinging her blade.
Fortunately, only a few zombies remained, scorched and blackened but still trying to attack. Luo Sheng shouted, “Run downstairs! Get to the tenth floor!” She raised her iron rod and slammed it into a zombie’s head.
The monster struggled to get up. Qiao Bai nodded, grabbing Yang Suitong to clear a path. Having some experience now, she used her weapon to dodge two zombies and led the way smoothly down to the tenth floor, where they bumped into Su Rong’s group coming down.
Luo Sheng protected her mother as they ran, turning back to urge Nan Shuwan to follow.
Nan Chu had just decapitated a zombie, blood spraying onto her face. Growing up, she had only ever killed fish; the first time she actually cut off a human-like head, her heart raced frantically. Even though it was a mutated monster, she still felt a sense of disbelief.
The zombie, despite having no head, still struggled on the floor. Nan Chu gave it a horrified look before rushing after the others.
Su Rong and Qiao Bai’s groups came face to face. For a split second, they mistook each other for zombies and raised their weapons, but they both exhaled in relief upon recognizing one another.
Qiao Bai was emotional. “Sister Rong, I’m so glad you’re okay!”
Su Rong nodded, not saying much. She went to the edge of the hallway to look out. They were at the tenth floor, right at the water level. But with the rain, the zombies in the water, and her own raft missing, what were they to do?
As she thought, the remaining zombies on this floor were drawn by the noise and emerged from other units, hissing as they pounced. Everyone gripped their weapons, their nerves taut as they fought back.
Liu Lin kicked a zombie in the stomach and slashed with her knife, but another suddenly rushed her from behind. She dodged nimbly, but the zombie lunged and pinned her down. She stumbled and fell to the floor.
The monster hissed its foul breath, trying with all its might to bite her neck. Liu Lin held her knife between her head and the creature, but being pinned, she was at a strength disadvantage. Her elbows were beginning to give way under the weight of the thrashing zombie.
The sharp teeth were inches away. Just as Liu Lin was about to break, the zombie was kicked flying and struck hard with an iron rod. Saved, Liu Lin breathed a sigh of relief and looked up at a cold, somewhat unfamiliar face.
Liu Lin had never met Luo Sheng. She hadn’t expected to find a survivor in this building with such strength and skill. She scrambled up and said thank you, but the moment she stood, the zombie that had been knocked down stood back up and lunged at Luo Xiaoli.
Liu Lin instinctively pulled Luo Xiaoli behind her, dodging the attack. Luo Sheng, reacting instantly, delivered another blow with the iron rod, separating the monster from her mother.
She held a long knife in her left hand. As the zombie hit the ground again, Luo Sheng didn’t hesitate; she drove the blade with all her might into the zombie’s heart. The monster, which had seemed like an unkillable cockroach, thrashed its legs a few times and then went completely limp.
Luo Sheng felt a surge of joy. She understood now: the zombie’s fatal weak point was indeed the heart.
Nan Shuwan and Nan Chu worked together to dispatch a few more. The group gathered, everyone gasping for air.
Now that the doors were broken and the fifteenth floor was partially destroyed, they had nowhere to go. Qiao Bai looked at Luo Sheng and asked, “Sister Luo, what do we do now…?”
Luo Sheng remained silent, but Nan Shuwan suddenly spoke up. “Southwest, two kilometers away. I bought an old building there a while ago. I hadn’t told you yet.”
Luo Sheng was surprised. “How did you…?”
Before Nan Shuwan could explain, Nan Chu, her face covered in blood, let out a soft laugh. For the first time in a long while, she looked at her sister with admiration. “Plan B… heh. I didn’t think your habit would stay the same after all these years. Always leaving yourself a back way out.”
Luo Sheng understood. She locked eyes with Nan Shuwan, then retrieved two small assault boats from her space, setting them steadily on the water.
Initially, she hadn’t planned to help the others, but since Liu Lin had just saved her mother, Luo Sheng didn’t want to owe a debt. She pointed to the second boat. “The three of you take that one. We’re heading southwest immediately.”
Su Rong and Feng Xi were overjoyed. Their brains hadn’t even processed how Luo Sheng had produced the boats out of nowhere; they were simply full of gratitude. Su Rong patted Luo Sheng’s shoulder, vowing, “Xiao Luo, this is the second time you’ve saved me. My life belongs to you now… if anything else happens, I promise to risk my life to protect you!”
Liu Lin, having been saved by Luo Sheng, felt her admiration for her grow. Looking at the woman’s refined profile and her posture as steady as a pine in the wind, a certain chord in her heart seemed to be struck.
Luo Sheng didn’t waste any more words. She helped her mother onto the boat, then reached out for Nan Shuwan, half-embracing her as she brought her over. The other three boarded the second boat. They started the engines and steered toward the southwest.
However, the zombies in the water were gradually clustering, diving beneath the surface to block their path.
