What Should I Do If I Wake Up and It’s the Apocalypse? (GL) - Chapter 12
The swaying, hideous figures were like invisible clamps. In an instant, the excited shout from behind seemed to be caught tight, turning into a short, frightened gasp before falling into silence.
The zombies had clearly already locked onto them. There were three in total. Judging from their staggering steps, their speed was about the same as the ones back in the apartment building. The biggest problem was that because their speed was roughly equal, they were advancing almost side by side.
“Ducks with their necks pinched,” Mu Xiao muttered in a voice neither too loud nor too soft.
The people who were focusing on the zombies had yet to react when Ling Qi glanced at her.
Mu Xiao did not feel guilty at all. She grinned at Ling Qi and gave a small wave with the tennis racket in her hand.
“Ling Qi, I’ll leave little An Qi to you. You two hide properly and don’t get separated.”
After saying that, Mu Xiao took two steps forward, putting distance between herself and the two girls, one older and one younger. She even shifted a couple of steps toward their side, clearly protecting them behind her.
For Ling Qi, this was truly a new experience. But she had only just taken an extra look at Mu Xiao when An Qi tugged at her sleeve. The little girl imitated Mu Xiao and waved the badminton racket in her hand.
“Ling Qi Sister, don’t be scared! Mu Xiao Sister is very amazing!”
An Qi was clearly already used to being protected by Mu Xiao.
An Qi, you’re putting so much pressure on me…
Of course Mu Xiao heard the praise filled with confidence coming from behind her. Unfortunately, Mu Xiao’s mood was not that bright. She kept feeling that, without her noticing, the thought of wanting to be eaten by zombies while unconscious had already become far, far away. Her shoulders felt so heavy. Her knees hurt so much!
However, even though she remembered her original thoughts, Mu Xiao could only swing the tennis racket and meet the zombies that had already come close.
Judging from all their previous reactions, zombies—at least the zombies right now—did not have much ability to think. They mostly followed instinct.
Mu Xiao weighed the tennis racket in her hand. This thing had some weight to it, even heavier than the clothes-drying pole from before. Immediately after, she raised the racket, lifted her leg, and stomped down heavily. Her arm followed the large swing of her body, drawing an arc through the air. The tennis racket flew from her hand and smashed heavily into the face of the zombie in the middle not far ahead.
The dull sound of impact made everyone present feel pain in the bridge of their own noses. Then they all widened their eyes and looked at Mu Xiao, startled by her unexpected action.
Mu Xiao had no time to care about what these people thought. Right now, her whole body was like a taut bowstring, from her mind to her body. At the same time the tennis racket left her hand, she did not even try to control the momentum of her body continuing forward. Instead, she lifted her other leg and cooperated with the force, rushing forward while taking out another tennis racket from her back.
Earlier, the zombies had already been only three to five steps away from Mu Xiao at the front. On top of that, Mu Xiao herself had charged toward them. In just two steps, Mu Xiao arrived in front of the zombies.
The tennis racket in her hand slapped unceremoniously toward the zombie closest to her on the right.
Because of the tennis racket she had thrown earlier, the zombie in the middle had been beaten so hard that it crashed to the ground, falling behind by several steps. Mu Xiao’s tennis racket also accurately struck the right-side zombie’s face with no small amount of force. The zombie’s body tilted, looking as if it had been hit hard.
However, because what she held was a racket, Mu Xiao instinctively used the racket face to slap the zombie’s head. The strings on the tennis racket embedded heavily into the already loose flesh on the zombie’s face, forcibly scraping off a layer.
If this had been a living person, they would probably have collapsed and screamed from the pouring blood and intense pain.
But this was a zombie.
Even if all the flesh on its face were scraped clean, it would not feel pain.
This zombie only crashed into the wall on the right because of the force of Mu Xiao’s strike. But the next second after it regained its balance, it roared and pounced at Mu Xiao.
Mu Xiao had no choice but to use the shaft of the tennis racket to block the zombie’s frontal attack.
Because of this, her original plan of hitting one and then striking the other was completely ruined. The opening on Mu Xiao’s left side was wide open, and the zombie on the left gladly accepted the invitation, pouncing straight toward Mu Xiao.
A figure rushed up from behind in time, actually using their own body to slam directly into the zombie on the left.
The zombie was caught off guard by the attack from the side. It was knocked far away and even rolled twice on the ground.
That person rushed over and raised a foot, kicking the right-side zombie in the abdomen. Mu Xiao’s pressure instantly lightened by a lot, and she even had enough spare attention to glance at the “warrior” who had charged up to wrestle with the zombie.
“Senior, are you all right?” Kang Kai asked enthusiastically, a trace of worry in his eyes.
Mu Xiao shook her head and said something out of nowhere. “Shut your mouth and kick it again.”
Kang Kai did not understand, but he did as told. Then he discovered that as he kicked the zombie’s abdomen again, Mu Xiao suddenly withdrew her tennis racket.
Because its hands suddenly found empty air, the zombie staggered. It happily howled, wanting to pounce on Mu Xiao and enjoy fresh food, only to discover that its stomach was being stepped on by another piece of “food,” making it unable to move. It became extremely furious.
Its face, half of its flesh already slapped away, turned gloomily toward Kang Kai. Its two claws mercilessly grabbed straight toward the base of Kang Kai’s thighs—this was the farthest position it could reach.
Kang Kai immediately broke out in a cold sweat.
And in that instant, Mu Xiao’s tennis racket arrived again.
This time, she used the side of the racket to slice directly at the zombie’s head, forcibly knocking the zombie’s head hard against the wall. A dent was smashed into the back of its skull, and disgusting white brain matter splattered everywhere.
And so, after breaking out in cold sweat, Kang Kai was once again grateful that he had listened to Mu Xiao and shut his mouth.
Unfortunately, there was no time for them to communicate.
After they finally dealt with the zombie on the right, the zombie that had been struck in the head by Mu Xiao earlier arrived.
Perhaps because the earlier fight had been intense, even the zombie gave off a sense of “excitement.” As soon as it came up, it grabbed Kang Kai by the neck, then opened its mouth to bite.
Mu Xiao became the one saving someone. She raised the tennis racket and sliced straight down through the gap between the zombie and Kang Kai, breaking the zombie’s arms before its huge mouth could bite down.
Kang Kai swore he even heard the sound of bones breaking. Along with that sound came the zombie’s roar right next to him and a numb, painful feeling on his ear.
Kang Kai’s heart instantly turned ice-cold. Even the fact that he had escaped from the zombie’s hands and could breathe again could not return him to his earlier state. He stared blankly as Mu Xiao abandoned the zombie whose arms were broken and could no longer grab people, then swung the racket toward the left-side zombie that he had knocked rolling away and which had finally returned. She actually sliced off half of that zombie’s head.
Kang Kai felt deep admiration. He worshiped this senior whom he had only met once before with all his heart. Senior was not only good at studying and capable, she even fought zombies so cleanly.
He really wanted to learn from Senior. Perhaps one day, he could also become someone this strong.
However, the pain constantly coming from his ear reminded Kang Kai that perhaps before long, he would become Senior’s next enemy.
Kang Kai kind of wanted to cry.
He had not cried since graduating from elementary school.
“Hey, what’s wrong with you?” At this time, Mu Xiao had already dealt with the remaining zombies.
Because Kang Kai had suddenly helped, she had finally escaped from the zombies’ multiple attacks and, in passing, figured out the correct way to use a tennis racket.
When she sliced off half a zombie’s head with one hand, Mu Xiao had also felt it was unbelievable. Even if her strength and stamina were much better than before she transmigrated, slicing off a head with a one-handed swing of something as blunt as a tennis racket was not something Mu Xiao believed she was capable of.
Because of that, she had paused in surprise at the time.
Fortunately, the remaining zombie had both arms broken by Mu Xiao. At this moment, it could only pounce over and try to bite people with its mouth. But having lost the hands that could restrain prey’s movements, such an action was far too ridiculous.
After finishing off that last broken-armed zombie, Mu Xiao only then noticed that Kang Kai, the big boy who had stepped forward earlier, looked like he was about to cry but had not cried yet. He looked very pitiful.
So Mu Xiao asked.
Kang Kai looked at Mu Xiao and felt even more aggrieved. His eyes grew a little sore.
“I was bitten on the ear by a zombie just now. I might turn into a zombie soon. Senior, tie me up now.”
“…”
Mu Xiao glanced at Kang Kai’s ear, then looked at him with considerable pity and said gently, “That was grazed by the tennis racket. The skin isn’t broken. It should just hurt for a while.”
This boy was quite brave, and earlier he had seemed pretty clear-headed when speaking.
Unfortunately, he was a little silly.
