After Transmigrating into a Book, I Became the Vicious Female Supporting Lead - Chapter 27
The moon shifted across the treetops as Lin Qiyan and Mu Yunge traversed the bustling night market.
The clamorous streets had already forgotten the farce from a few days ago. That girl and her mother were busily working at their stall.
“Boss, are our skewers ready yet? We’ve been waiting forever.”
The middle-aged woman responded repeatedly, “Coming, coming!”
“Boss, another crate of beer over here!”
“Right away, right away.” Without looking back, the woman called out to her daughter. The girl ran over from the other side, hauled a crate of beer from the back, and trudged forward step by difficult step. A man at the table saw her, stood up immediately, and took it from her.
“Thanks for the hard work, little girl.”
The girl shook her head bashfully.
Lin Qiyan retracted the step she had been about to take. Mu Yunge glanced at her sideways.
Mu Yunge crinkled her eyes and said, “Yan Yan, you head back first. I’m going to buy a few things.”
Lin Qiyan looked back. “I’ll go with you.”
Mu Yunge took a step back. “It’s not far. I’ll be right back.”
The chaotic lights reflected off her face, making her exceptionally beautiful. Lin Qiyan stood there watching her silhouette for a moment, then thought better of it, walked forward a bit, and stopped at the mouth of the alley.
The starlight overhead was sparse, and the bright silk-like moonlight fell upon the concrete in a bleak wash. Lin Qiyan gazed in the direction Mu Yunge had gone.
Soon, a tall figure approached at an unhurried pace. Seeing Lin Qiyan, she quickened her steps and arrived before her in no time.
Mu Yunge: “Were you waiting here for me?”
Lin Qiyan nodded and joked, “After all, bad things happened here before. What if you were left with a psychological shadow and were too embarrassed to say so?”
As she spoke, she took the large bag of items from the other girl’s hand and they walked back side-by-side.
Mu Yunge didn’t insist on taking the bag back. “Do you think I’m very weak?”
Lin Qiyan made a gesture and nodded solemnly. “Fragile and unable to take care of yourself.”
Mu Yunge arched a brow. “Then how did I survive to be this old?”
Lin Qiyan spun a serious yarn: “Probably heaven’s favor. It wanted everyone to see its masterpiece, so it blessed you, making everyone—without exception—fall for your charm and willingly protect you as you grew up safely.”
After saying it, she shivered. “That was so cheesy.”
Mu Yunge: “Oh, so you knew.”
Lin Qiyan said obediently, “My mistake.”
Mu Yunge played along: “If admitting a mistake was enough, what would we need the police for?”
Lin Qiyan thought for a moment. “To be witnesses?”
Mu Yunge: “Witnesses to what?”
Lin Qiyan tested the waters: “Witnesses to us making up?”
Mu Yunge was silent for a moment, then suddenly let out a laugh and nodded. “That works.”
Lin Qiyan said sheepishly, “I heard a joke today. Want to hear it?”
Mu Yunge’s attitude was excellent. “What joke?”
Lin Qiyan: “Two passing classmates were joking around. One said she’d ‘give the other one a piece of her mind’ (make her look good), and the other said, ‘Then just keep me in captive breeding—raise me until I can’t do anything but eat and sleep, a mental execution.’ Her companion replied, ‘Then why wouldn’t I just raise a pig? At least I can slaughter it for food at the New Year.'”
Silence followed for quite a while. Lin Qiyan rubbed her nose. “Not funny?”
Mu Yunge: “It’s funny.”
Lin Qiyan peeked at her. “Then why aren’t you laughing?”
Mu Yunge: “I did laugh.”
Lin Qiyan: “When?”
“Just now,” Mu Yunge said. “I laughed in my head.”
Lin Qiyan: “…”
[Did Yunge just tell a ‘cold’ joke? Should I laugh so it’s less awkward?]
The streetlights stretched the shadows of the two girls. The dim alley filled with the sound of laughter.
After getting home, Lin Qiyan went to shower first. Mu Yunge walked into the kitchen with practiced familiarity, took out plates to arrange the food, and placed them one by one on the coffee table.
When Lin Qiyan came out, she saw a late-night feast. She stopped drying her hair, looking quite surprised. She knew Yunge had bought things, but she didn’t expect this much.
Mu Yunge stood up, skillfully took the towel from her hand, and began drying her hair for her.
Lin Qiyan frowned slightly. “There’s so much. What if we can’t finish it?”
Feeling the high-grade Omega’s pheromones quietly soothing her glands and nerves, Mu Yunge looked down at the strands of hair, her voice slow and gentle: “Yan Yan, is the refrigerator just for decoration?”
Lin Qiyan: “It might not be fresh later.”
Mu Yunge: “Then what should we do?” Her voice carried a smile as she casually draped the damp towel over a nearby chair. She tilted her head and said mischievously, “I guess I’ll have to trouble you to eat a bit more then.”
Lin Qiyan: “…”
[With this much, am I sure I won’t end up ‘buried in a foreign land’ after eating?]
She hesitated. She asked diplomatically, “Yunge, have you ever raised a living creature before?”
Mu Yunge lowered her eyes in thought. “I think I once raised a turtle.”
Lin Qiyan: “Is it still with us?”
Mu Yunge: “It was fine in the summer, but in the winter it froze solid. So I put it in some water to heat it up…”
Lin Qiyan had a bad feeling. “…And then?”
Mu Yunge blinked. “The meat was very fragrant.”
Lin Qiyan: “…”
She couldn’t believe it. She pointed at the pile of food on the table. “Th-then, me eating…”
Mu Yunge couldn’t help but laugh. “I’m teasing you.”
Lin Qiyan breathed a sigh of relief.
Mu Yunge: “I’ve never raised anything. You’re the first.”
Lin Qiyan’s sigh of relief got stuck halfway up her throat, nearly choking her to death.
In the end, they didn’t consume much—mostly Mu Yunge watching Lin Qiyan eat. The majority of the leftovers were put into the fridge. Mu Yunge helped tidy up before going to shower.
It was well into the second half of the night by the time they lay in bed, but fortunately, there was nothing to do the next day. Visibility in the room was low with the lights off. Outside, the city lights flickered out one by one. Silvery moonlight flowed through the gaps in the curtains, shimmering with tiny glints like fallen stars scattered across the floor.
Having just eaten, Lin Qiyan wasn’t very sleepy. She kept her eyes open for a while before turning her head to the side. Mu Yunge was lying on her side, eyes closed, perfectly still. She watched her for a moment then turned back.
Dense waves of homesickness and melancholy surged in her heart. The sadness she could suppress during the day was exceptionally easy to draw out at night. Lin Qiyan took a few deep breaths, her naturally positive mindset allowing her to detach from the emotion quickly. Eventually, her consciousness drifted away into a dream.
The next time she opened her eyes, the sun was high in the sky. Lin Qiyan sat up abruptly—her first instinct was that she was late, her second was that it was the weekend and the milk tea shop was closed. She lay back down in her comfortable nest with satisfaction.
She turned her head; no one was beside her. Lin Qiyan took a moment to wake up before getting out of bed to wash. The sound of a key rustling in the lock came from the door. She poked her head out of the bathroom, mouth full of foam, and locked eyes with Mu Yunge as she entered.
The latter paused, then quickly broke into a smile. “Yan Yan, you’re awake.”
Lin Qiyan nodded, her gaze shifting to the plastic bag in her hand. She said muddledly, “Yunge, did you go buy breakfast?”
Mu Yunge changed her shoes and arranged the items. “Mhm. Do you think this is enough to eat?”
Lin Qiyan spat out the toothpaste foam, walked out, and glanced at the table. “This much? Definitely enough.”
Mu Yunge: “That’s good then.”
Lin Qiyan held it in, then couldn’t help herself. “Why did you think it wouldn’t be enough?”
Mu Yunge: “I didn’t. I just didn’t know how much was appropriate for a ‘feeding’.” She smiled. “After all, it’s my first time raising a living creature. I have no experience.”
Lin Qiyan: “…”
This joke is never going away.
After breakfast, Lin Qiyan pulled out her exercise book and sat on the sofa to work on problems.
Mu Yunge: “Yan Yan, it’s a beautiful day. Let’s go out for a stroll.”
Lin Qiyan looked up, her interest piqued. “Where to?”
Mu Yunge tapped her phone a few times. “Let’s see a movie. There are a few new releases that look pretty good.”
Lin Qiyan: “A movie?”
Mu Yunge shook her phone and smiled. “I’ve already bought the tickets.”
Lin Qiyan’s eyes widened slightly.
