As She Wished - Chapter 10
The next day at school, Fu Jing was dragged by Qin Zijin to eat and chat with her.
The boy whose contact information Qin Zijin had gotten before, after a period of her soft words and subtle hints of pursuit, had finally officially gotten together with her.
Fu Jing sighed. “You’re really amazing, and you really value romance over friendship. Only after you got your partner did you take the initiative to ask me to hang out.”
“This is called valuing romance over friendship? This is called understanding priorities!” Qin Zijin was in high spirits and showed concern for her. “How are things on your side now? Are you still pursuing her? Have you changed targets?”
“…Of course it’s still her. And we’ve already made a lot of progress!”
Fu Jing quickly told her everything that had happened last night.
Her tone was joyful from beginning to end.
After finishing, Fu Jing even held her face in her hands and savored the memory. “She’s really so considerate. I’m not even a customer at the bar anymore, but she still went around to the passenger side and held the umbrella for me.”
Qin Zijin used the tip of her chopsticks to poke apart a piece of potato that was suspected to be chicken. Helplessly, she twitched her lips. “Because you didn’t have an umbrella. She already said she would send you back. Was she supposed to watch you get into the car drenched like a drowned chicken? Even if she didn’t care about you, she would care about the car.”
Fu Jing said, “But when I hugged her, she didn’t avoid me.”
Qin Zijin’s tone was fair and objective. “That was such a tiny, tiny accident, and you apologized too. Any reasonably decent person wouldn’t push the other person away, okay? Do you think everyone is neurotic like you and refuses to let other people touch them?”
Hearing this, Fu Jing pursed her lips in grievance and looked at her pitifully. “Why are you always discouraging me? Are you trying to say I can’t pursue Gu Qingci?”
Qin Zijin rolled her eyes and said while eating, “Quite the opposite. I’m wondering how you’ve been at it for so many days and still haven’t won her over. It simply makes no sense. Are you sure she’s bent?”
“I’m sure!”
“What evidence do you have?”
“Intuition!”
“…”
Qin Zijin narrowed her eyes slightly and lifted her head, staring deeply at this good friend who had been missing a screw since childhood.
Fu Jing’s expression was pure, dazed, and adorable. She even tilted her face.
“Fine.” Qin Zijin was instantly defeated. She stabbed her chopsticks through a piece of chicken and said in admiration, “I’ll just assume everyone has intuition.”
“Hmph.” Fu Jing glared at her fiercely. “Don’t look down on other people.”
“I’m not looking down on other people. I’m specifically looking down on you.” Qin Zijin shook her head. “But count yourself lucky. With me by your side, and since Sister is free now, I’ll personally teach you how to pursue someone.”
Fu Jing cheered. “Oh! Thank you, Sister.”
Qin Zijin reached out her hand. “First, give me your phone. I’ll look at her Moments and analyze them.”
Fu Jing said, “But I don’t have her WeChat.”
Qin Zijin asked, “Why?”
Fu Jing said, “Because I haven’t asked for it yet.”
Qin Zijin looked utterly puzzled. “May I ask what you’ve been doing every time you’ve seen her over all these days?”
Fu Jing tried hard to recall. “…Maybe just staring at her?”
Qin Zijin: “…”
She felt deeply speechless. “Forget it. This is just right. We’ll first arrange your own Moments properly, so when you add her later, it’ll seem more natural.”
Qin Zijin looked through Fu Jing’s photo album and found that this person did not have a single selfie. Suppressing her helplessness, she continued by looking through the Moments of Fu Jing’s contacts. Many advisors liked posting event photos of students. Only after quite a while did she save a few usable photos.
One of them was from an award ceremony at the College of Science.
Fu Jing stood in the middle, smiling stiffly, but with a silly sweetness about her.
However, with keywords like “Songjiang University” and “Outstanding Student” in the background as contrast, the photo had an academic feel to it, creating a cute contrast.
Qin Zijin looked at it a few times. This one could be used directly without editing.
Then she suddenly noticed that in the corner, there was also a girl with outstanding looks. She had long hair draped over her shoulders and a fair face. The edge of the photo was a little blurry, but it was not hard to see that she was delicate and pretty.
“Who is this?”
Qin Zijin showed it to Fu Jing.
“I think her name is Xu Can.” Fu Jing enlarged the photo and stared at it for a few seconds before recognizing her. “Apparently, she’s a very impressive junior.”
Qin Zijin examined it carefully and clicked her tongue, questioning her. “How are you both academic elites from the College of Science, but she dresses like a fairy, while you wore some dull gray windbreaker to stand on the same stage for a group photo?!”
Fu Jing said, “Is a windbreaker bad…”
Qin Zijin said, “Forget it, it’s fine. We’ll just crop her out before posting it to Moments.”
Fu Jing said, “Oh!”
Throughout the entire afternoon, Qin Zijin chattered as she guided Fu Jing on how to decorate her Moments, display her personality, and reflect her own value. She even took her to buy new clothes in different styles.
Finally, she instructed her seriously, “Fu Jing, you don’t have any problems. You just need to be more proactive, understand?”
—
Thursday.
Fu Jing had carefully dressed up. She wore a sleeveless, high-waisted black dress, exposing two fair, flawless arms. Black stockings wrapped around her slender, straight legs, faintly revealing the pale color of her skin beneath, and on her feet was a pair of semi-patent leather carved shoes.
As soon as she entered the bar, she received unanimous praise.
Ye Xinyi smiled knowingly and clapped for her. “Dressed up so beautifully. Looks like you’re putting in all your effort today!”
“That’s right.” Fu Jing could not hold back her words. Her eyes curved with a smile as she honestly said, “My friend said this dress is especially scheming. It looks low-key, but the waist is high and the skirt is short.”
Tao Xian glanced at it. “This kind of cut really does show off your figure.”
“It’s not that the cut shows it off.” Fu Jing suddenly refuted her, emphasizing, “It’s that my figure is already very good, okay?”
Tao Xian froze, then immediately remembered that she had once tricked Fu Jing by saying Gu Qingci liked people with good figures.
She actually still remembered that?
Holding back her laughter, Tao Xian pretended to be normal and clapped. “Good! Great figure! When Gu Qingci sees you later, she definitely won’t be able to look away!”
Everyone in the bar played along very well. “That’s right. Slender waist and thin legs! Even we can’t look away.”
Fu Jing was greatly pleased. She laughed foolishly and even nodded seriously. “Tonight, I must make her fall for me. Best if I can take advantage of the momentum and abduct her into bed.”
“…”
Everyone looked left and right.
Cheng Nannan pressed her lips together and sighed. “I’ve discovered that Fu Jing is actually very dirty-minded. It’s just that she looks young and speaks in such a dazed, adorable tone, so she always gives us the illusion that she’s very pure.”
Fu Jing laughed even more wildly and even deliberately used a soft, cute tone to say, “So you really can’t judge people by appearance~ Actually, every day, I’m thinking about how to sleep with Gu Qingci~”
Tao Xian coughed. “Gu Qingci is behind you.”
Fu Jing: “…It’s not like that! Listen to my explanation!”
The spring breeze on her face instantly disappeared. She stiffly turned around, frantically thinking about how to smooth things over for herself—
but she did not see anyone there at all.
“…”
She was still looking behind her.
Suddenly, everyone in the bar burst into laughter.
…She had been tricked.
Fu Jing came back to herself and only felt relieved. She patted her chest and said good-temperedly, “Laugh if you want! I don’t understand what’s so funny.”
Ye Xinyi laughed with goose-like honks, thumping her chest as she gasped. “You were just boasting shamelessly that your mind was full of thoughts about how to sleep with her, but the moment you heard she was behind you, you immediately changed your tune and said it wasn’t like that… With your tiny courage, I think you should just calmly lie back and be a 0!”
Fu Jing thought about it, then told them, “Since I was little, I’ve been especially bad at sports. Only with the medicine ball, I could get full marks by throwing it casually. My teacher said my movements were a total mess and depended entirely on brute strength. So scientifically speaking, I’m very much a 1!”
“Really?”
“I can’t tell that you’re that strong.”
Fu Jing was proud. “I’ve also never lost at arm wrestling.”
“Oh?”
The bar employees immediately did not believe her. They moved over a table and chairs, then came forward one by one to compete against Fu Jing. But after everyone had taken a turn, there really was no one stronger than her.
Fu Jing laughed loudly. “How about that? I said I’m a 1!”
Tao Xian said again, “Gu Qingci is here.”
“How could I possibly fall for it a second time?” Fu Jing placed both hands on her waist, lifted her little chin slightly, and said in high spirits, “In any case, tonight, I will definitely conquer Gu Qingci!”
“…”
The words had already left her mouth.
She was wondering why no one was roasting her.
Then she saw that everyone’s expressions were subtle, as if both shocked and holding back laughter. The focus of their gazes had all gathered a few meters behind Fu Jing.
Vaguely sensing something, Fu Jing stiffly turned her head and truly met a calm gaze. Gu Qingci’s face was in the backlight, making it hard to see her expression clearly. She lifted her feet and slowly walked over.
Fu Jing swallowed.
When Gu Qingci came closer, Fu Jing saw that there was no ripple at all in her pitch-black eyes. Gu Qingci raised her brows slightly, looking a little surprised. “Why are you all staring at me?”
She probably had not heard what was said just now.
Fu Jing could not help letting out a sigh of relief, feeling the lucky joy of having caught a general pardon. She hurriedly went closer and asked, “Why did you come so early? Looks like you’re in a good mood today.”
“Not very good.” Gu Qingci glanced at her. “I came to borrow wine to drown my sorrows.”
Fu Jing: “…”
“Fu Jing, come here.” Tao Xian hurried over to the bar counter, took out the red wine Gu Qingci usually liked from the cabinet underneath, and found the corkscrew as well. “Take this to her.”
“Okay.” Fu Jing nodded repeatedly.
The tray in her hands held the red wine and related utensils as she prepared to go upstairs. Because the person waiting in the private room was Gu Qingci, her heart was pounding, and even her steps were not very steady.
She was especially careful going up the stairs.
She knocked on the door and pushed it open to enter the private room.
—
Although Fu Jing herself did not drink, after staying in the bar for so long, she knew that she had to open the red wine first and pour it into the decanter.
She picked up the corkscrew, drilled it in with a few quick movements, pulled out the cork cleanly, held the bottle with her palm facing the label, and poured the wine in.
All her movements were skilled.
Fu Jing’s hands were not as slender as her physique. Instead, they were slightly fleshy, soft, and when her knuckles bent, there were even a few little dimples on the back of her hand. They were delicate and fair, making one want to hold them in one’s hands and play with them.
“…”
Fu Jing lifted her eyes and only then realized Gu Qingci had been staring at her hands the whole time.
Her movements stiffened slightly. She quickly reflected on the steps she had just performed and carefully asked, “What’s wrong? I don’t think I did anything wrong, right?”
Gu Qingci’s expression carried weariness. She leaned forward and personally held the decanter, pouring wine into the goblet until it was full. Only then did she say lightly, “No.”
The wine in her goblet was almost filled to the rim.
Soon, more than half the glass of wine went down her throat. Her sitting posture was straight, and there was no flush on her face. She continued drinking, looking as if she was bored and trying to get herself drunk.
Fu Jing secretly clicked her tongue as she watched, knowing that Gu Qingci was truly in a bad mood today.
But she did not know how to say pleasant words to comfort people.
So she could only quietly keep her company.
After a long pause, Fu Jing stood up and sat beside her, making it more convenient to pour wine for her. “Is red wine very tasty?”
Gu Qingci said casually, “Do you want to try it?”
“…” Fu Jing first shook her head slightly, then immediately reacted. She had not brought up another glass.
So if she tried it, she could only try the glass in Gu Qingci’s hand.
Fu Jing immediately changed to nodding and pretended it was unintentional. “Sure.”
But Gu Qingci suddenly smiled.
Her red lips curved slightly, and warm light reflected in her eyes. Her features originally carried a kind of elegant, proper beauty, but when the corners of her lips lifted, she became indescribably alluring.
Perhaps because she had already drunk a few glasses, her brows and eyes were not as hidden and dark as before.
She looked at Fu Jing, smiling quietly. “Forget it. Children can’t drink alcohol.”
“Where is there a child?” Fu Jing immediately felt dissatisfied. So angry that her cheeks puffed slightly, but because she was worried Gu Qingci was in a bad mood, she did not dare say much. She only muttered, “Anyway, I’m not a child.”
Gu Qingci gave a soft laugh.
Fu Jing’s thoughts stirred, and she suddenly moved a little closer to her.
“…”
Gu Qingci remained calm and allowed Fu Jing to approach her. She somewhat wanted to see what Fu Jing would do next.
Their gazes met for a moment.
Fu Jing could not help avoiding her eyes. Her hands kneaded the hem of her dress chaotically to relieve her shyness. She calmed her emotions and tried hard to build up how she should speak.
She wanted to say that she could take Gu Qingci to eat some cake or dessert, because sugar could activate the dopamine system in the cerebral cortex and make people feel a false sense of happiness.
But when the words reached her lips, she swallowed them back… It seemed she could not quite say that?
She also wanted to say that no matter what kind of alcohol one drank, consuming alcohol was something with only harm and no benefit to the human body… That seemed even more impossible to say right now.
Fu Jing furrowed her brows in distress.
She really was very bad at comforting people!
“Little sister, didn’t you say you wanted to conquer me?” Gu Qingci spoke very softly, her voice so gentle it was almost unbelievable. As if afraid Fu Jing would not hear clearly, she turned her face, lowered her long lashes, leaned beside her ear, and asked, “Why don’t you even have a plan?”
