Chapter 44
Dai Shiyuan’s work today was exactly the same as yesterday’s, and it was not difficult to do.
It was just that the sexy bunny-girl uniform she had on always made her feel a little awkward, and from time to time, she wanted to tug at the hem of the skirt.
Thinking of Sister Hu’s words, she tried her best not to mind it.
When it was time to get off work, Dai Shiyuan secretly let out a breath of relief and hurriedly went to change.
When she saw the sexy nightgown she had bought that afternoon in her schoolbag, she had the urge to throw it away.
Holding the nightgown and hesitating for quite a while, she still stuffed it into her schoolbag and covered it with other things.
After doing all this, Dai Shiyuan’s face heated up. She could not help taking out her phone.
This time, the female lead had not called to urge her. Looking at her quiet phone, Dai Shiyuan lowered her eyes and froze for a while before finally gathering her spirits and heading back.
Today, the female lead had not shown concern for her like yesterday. A trace of disappointment actually surged up in her heart.
Dai Shiyuan’s footsteps paused, and the expression on her face instantly froze.
After quite a while, she let out a heavy breath, exhaling that inexplicable gloom that had surged up in her heart.
When she returned to the apartment, everything was pitch-black. It was not like yesterday, when someone had left the lights on and waited for her amid a room full of brightness.
A feeling she could not describe immediately rose in Dai Shiyuan’s heart. She gave a self-mocking laugh and quickly pressed down this strange mood.
She did not turn on the lights either. Using the light from her phone’s flashlight, she walked toward her room.
Just as she finished walking through the narrow entryway, a sudden “bang” sounded beside her ears, and something fell onto her head.
“Ah…” Dai Shiyuan was startled. Her shoulders shrank together, and she could not control the cry that escaped her.
This sudden sound had caught her completely unprepared. Her phone immediately slipped from her hand and fell to the floor with a slap.
In the darkness, little points of starlike light suddenly appeared. Then came a gentle female voice filled with laughter. “Xiao Yuan, happy birthday.”
The blessing at the end clearly carried joy inside it, making Dai Shiyuan freeze.
Her birthday was clearly on New Year’s Eve. It was only September now.
“You got it wrong, didn’t you?” Dai Shiyuan hurriedly turned on the light beside her.
In an instant, the living room became bright. She looked at the female lead standing before her with a cake, the smile on her face sincere and beautiful.
Dai Shiyuan froze for a moment, then reacted and bent down to pick up the phone on the floor.
“Xiao Yuan’s birthday is today. Sister-in-law wouldn’t remember it wrong.” Shan Yaxin smiled softly, certainty appearing in her eyes as she continued, “Look, there are eighteen candles here. It’s to celebrate your upcoming eighteenth birthday. After today, you’ll be an adult.”
The words “eighteenth birthday” struck Dai Shiyuan’s heart like a muffled thunderclap. Only then did she remember that she was currently using another identity. She hurriedly said, “Thank you, Sister-in-law. I’ve been so busy lately that I even forgot my own birthday.”
“Sister-in-law already told you today to come back early, yet you still studied this late. You really make people worry.” Shan Yaxin smiled and said softly, her tone full of indulgence.
Dai Shiyuan’s heart tightened. She unconsciously lowered her eyes, and the disappointment that had appeared for no reason before she entered seemed to vanish completely at this moment.
A warm current suddenly lingered around her heart, filling her entire body with warmth.
For as long as she could remember, in her impression, only her mother had ever celebrated her birthday for her.
One simple little cake had been enough to satisfy her.
Later, after her mother passed away, she never celebrated her birthday again.
Although the female lead was not truly celebrating “her” birthday now, this cake had been prepared for her.
That alone was already enough to satisfy her.
After coming to this world for so long, this was the first time she had felt that warm, homely feeling, one that let her temporarily forget that she and the female lead were people from two different times and spaces.
“Thank you.” Dai Shiyuan quietly wiped the corner of her eye and raised her head, revealing a bright smile.
Although she had already made a concealing movement, the crystalline light of tears was still reflected by the candlelight.
Shan Yaxin felt her heart tighten at the sight, as if she had sensed the sorrow and loneliness hidden in that tear.
This feeling made her somewhat confused.
Her younger sister-in-law had always been a little princess surrounded and pampered by everyone. How could she have this kind of weathered feeling, as if she had experienced the hardships of the world?
Before she could think more, the candles she was holding were suddenly all blown out. Even her face felt a faint puff of wind.
“Now that the candles are blown out, we can eat the cake, right?” Dai Shiyuan said happily, her bright eyes full of eagerness.
Shan Yaxin immediately felt as if everything she had sensed just now had been an illusion. How could the person before her, smiling without a single worry on her face, possibly be sad?
But that tear just now had still left ripples in her heart.
“After blowing out the candles, you should make a wish.” Shan Yaxin withdrew her thoughts and said with a smile, placing the cake on the table.
“You still have to make a wish…” Dai Shiyuan muttered quietly. Right now, she was already impatient to eat.
“This is Xiao Yuan’s eighteenth birthday. It’s a very special day. Xiao Yuan has to make a serious wish.” Shan Yaxin smiled lightly and instructed.
Dai Shiyuan frowned. Her eyes fluttered twice as she looked seriously at the cake.
If wishes could come true, she hoped she could return to the real world safe and sound.
