Chapter 10
Early the next morning, Xiao Xinyue woke up and stretched. She opened the window and saw Bai Tang busy in the small garden.
Her control over magic had improved. Yesterday, she could only sprinkle water over a small area, but now she did not need to move her paws at all. Fine streams of water scattered over the flowers in a wide area, refracting into a tiny rainbow.
When Bai Tang saw her, she even stretched out a paw to greet her.
Xiao Xinyue withdrew her gaze and closed the window.
Bai Tang did not care that she ignored her. She continued watering the flowers. After watering the small garden on the second floor, she ran to the courtyard and continued watering the flowers and grass.
Halfway through watering, a familiar carriage appeared in front of the courtyard gate.
Bai Tang went closer to take a look. Wasn’t this the coachman who had taken them to town yesterday?
The coachman walked in, carrying a large bag in his hands. It looked very heavy.
Before long, Lan Ji came out, paid the coachman, and took the bag. Once the transaction was complete, the coachman left.
Curious, Bai Tang followed Lan Ji into the house, staring the whole time at the bag in her hand.
Lan Ji guessed that she had smelled the scent of blood.
She crouched down and opened the bag.
Bai Tang leaned closer and poked her little head into the bag, only to see a huge piece of bloody meat.
She retreated several steps in a row, scared to death.
Lan Ji expressionlessly tied the bag closed. “For the next few days, you’ll have high-level magical beast meat to eat. Magical beasts have been invading these past two days, so more magical beasts have been hunted and butchered. Some will be delivered every day. They’re all fresh.”
This kind of thing was truly unbearable to look at raw, but once cooked, it was unexpectedly delicious. Bai Tang did not want to look at it anymore and ran back to the courtyard to continue watering the flowers. These flowers were much easier on the eyes.
For two days in a row, Bai Tang saw the coachman come over at the same time every day.
During these two days, there had been no progress at all in her plan to assassinate Xiao Xinyue. The keys had also been confiscated, but she had hidden the key to Xiao Xinyue’s room. Whenever they asked about it, she played dumb. Xiao Xinyue and Lan Ji both thought she had lost it.
With her current strength, killing the little villain was very difficult. This world also did not have phones, so during the day, Bai Tang had no idea how to pass the time.
Most importantly, she had no snacks!
Her last trip to town had left a deep impression on her. She had been thinking about it ever since, and her cravings were severe.
Bai Tang set her sights on the coachman.
The next morning, the coachman came again. After completing his transaction with Lan Ji and preparing to leave, Bai Tang followed him.
When the coachman saw her following him out, he bent down and spoke to her. “I remember you. You’re the Young Lady’s spirit pet.”
Bai Tang nodded.
Seeing that she actually responded to him, the coachman thought she was very intelligent and smiled. “Is something the matter?”
Bai Tang pointed her little paw at the carriage, then pointed at herself.
The coachman asked, “You want to go out?”
Bai Tang nodded again.
The coachman assumed Xiao Xinyue had tacitly allowed it. “I’ll be going to town again tonight. I’ll come over then.”
Bai Tang stretched out a little paw.
The coachman froze for a moment, not understanding what she meant.
Bai Tang stretched out her paw again.
The coachman was confused, but he subconsciously held out his hand.
Bai Tang jumped up and high-fived him.
Deal made.
The coachman finally understood what she meant and found her very interesting. “Perfect. I need to buy beast meat for Miss Lan anyway. I won’t charge you for the ride this time.”
Bai Tang spun in place several times.
This was simply wonderful.
The coachman left with a smile.
—
After finishing her watering work in the courtyard, it was almost time for breakfast.
Bai Tang ran to the dining room and sat beside Xiao Xinyue.
Before her was a delicious breakfast, but she ate very slowly. For the first time, she was this distracted while eating. The reason was that the matter of going out had been solved, but she had no money.
Without money, she could not buy anything. This troubled her greatly.
Bai Tang secretly looked at Xiao Xinyue.
Xiao Xinyue sensed her gaze and looked over coldly.
Bai Tang was so frightened she shivered.
Asking the little villain for money was no different from dreaming.
So she had no choice but to set her sights on Lan Ji. When she earned money in the future, she would pay her back double.
After Xiao Xinyue finished breakfast, she saw that Bai Tang had only eaten half of hers. She looked Bai Tang up and down several times, and only after confirming that she was not sick did she stand up and leave.
Lan Ji came over to clear the dishes.
Seeing Xiao Xinyue walk far away, Bai Tang’s gaze fell on Lan Ji. She was cold as ice, and no emotion could be seen on her face, but Bai Tang knew she could not resist her charm.
Lan Ji noticed Bai Tang looking at her. “Does it not taste good?”
Bai Tang shook her head and quickly finished the rest of the food in a few bites.
Lan Ji began clearing the table and carried the dishes to the kitchen to wash them.
Bai Tang hurried after her.
Lan Ji knew very well that Bai Tang was not clingy with her. Bai Tang only took the initiative to act spoiled toward the Young Lady. This was the first time Bai Tang had followed her like this, so Lan Ji felt a little delighted and happy.
She asked, “Do you want more food?”
Bai Tang nodded, then shook her head. She did want more food, but that was not important right now. The food sold in town was far more delicious.
Lan Ji was puzzled. “You don’t want more?”
Bai Tang nodded and rubbed her paws together as a gesture.
Lan Ji did not understand, but being looked at by Bai Tang’s big eyes full of expectation gave her a strange sense of satisfaction.
Lan Ji bent down, her voice unconsciously softening. “Then what do you want?”
Bai Tang’s eyes sparkled as she rubbed her little paws together.
Lan Ji thought for a moment, then took out a silver coin.
Bai Tang’s eyes shone even brighter.
Lan Ji handed it to her.
Sure enough, this gesture worked in any world.
Bai Tang touched the silver coin with her little paws and was practically overjoyed. She could not speak, so she could not express her thanks. She took the initiative to rub against Lan Ji’s palm.
Being rubbed by the fluffy little ball, Lan Ji showed her delight on her face.
Bai Tang rubbed against her twice to show her thanks, then left with the silver coin.
With her palm suddenly empty, Lan Ji felt a little disappointed.
Bai Tang ran all the way back to the woodshed, afraid that her little money would be stolen. She even only looked at it in the small corner.
One silver coin was worth one hundred copper coins. Based on the prices in this world, as long as she did not buy expensive things, she could eat whatever she wanted in the town as she pleased.
Bai Tang happily waited for night to fall. Then the coachman would come to pick her up.
She had nearly gotten lost in town last time. When they had returned, she had deliberately memorized the road. She was only going out to buy snacks and would be back very soon.
Bai Tang clenched the silver coin and fell asleep.
When she woke up, it was noon.
Bai Tang went to eat lunch, then quickly ran back to the woodshed, as if hiding some little secret and afraid of being discovered. Only by staying in the place most familiar to her did she feel safe.
Xiao Xinyue returned to her room for a short afternoon nap. In the afternoon, the sun was not strong, and there was even a gentle breeze, so she went to the courtyard and sat on the vine-wrapped swing to read.
Any movement outside caught Bai Tang’s attention. When she saw Xiao Xinyue, her entire body tensed, and she instantly became alert.
Bai Tang did not understand why she was so nervous. She was only going out to buy snacks, not doing anything guilty. Could it be that after forming a contract with the little villain, she really considered herself Xiao Xinyue’s person now?
She still had the freedom to go out and buy things.
Bai Tang comforted herself, but for some reason, she was still a little afraid.
Xiao Xinyue glanced at Bai Tang not far away.
She was unusually quiet today.
—
When night fell, Bai Tang heard movement outside. It was the sound of carriage wheels rolling.
Sure enough, the coachman had come.
Bai Tang immediately ran out of the courtyard and climbed into the carriage.
The coachman lifted the curtain. “It may be the latter half of the night by the time we come back. Is that all right?”
Bai Tang nodded.
The coachman added, “When we arrive, don’t wander around. If you get lost, I can’t bear that responsibility.”
Why had he suddenly become so nagging? He had clearly been very straightforward in the morning. In order to go out, Bai Tang nodded again.
The coachman asked again, “Did the Young Lady tacitly allow you to go? Should I tell them I’m taking you?”
Report it? How could that be allowed?
Bai Tang shook her head hard.
The coachman asked, “The Young Lady already knows I’m coming to pick you up?”
How could she possibly know?
Bai Tang nodded hard again.
This time, the coachman was relieved. He stopped asking questions and lowered the curtain.
The carriage began to move. Bai Tang excitedly looked at the night scenery outside. This trip was different from the last. Last time, she had secretly followed them, so everything had been restricted. This time, she was alone and could do whatever she wanted.
After all, she was an adult.
Traveling alone was, of course, no problem.
—
Inside the mansion.
Lan Ji prepared dinner and pushed the dining cart into the dining room.
Xiao Xinyue had just arrived.
Lan Ji divided the dinner portions, but Bai Tang’s seat was empty. She was puzzled. Every time mealtime came, Bai Tang would always arrive early. The most enthusiastic one about eating was always her.
Lan Ji asked, “Young Lady, did you restrict Xiao Bai’s dinner again?”
Xiao Xinyue shook her head.
Lan Ji found it even stranger. “I specially prepared a lot of meat for her, but it’s already mealtime, and she hasn’t come.”
Xiao Xinyue glanced at Bai Tang’s dinner. Several full plates of steaks were still steaming. They must have taken quite some time to prepare.
She said coldly, “Don’t bother with her.”
Hearing this, Lan Ji stopped mentioning Bai Tang.
Halfway through the meal, Xiao Xinyue’s delicate brows furrowed. Without Bai Tang noisily eating beside her, she actually felt unused to it.
Xiao Xinyue said, “Go look for her.”
Lan Ji was surprised that she would say such a thing and immediately went out to search.
Xiao Xinyue put down her utensils. She no longer had much of an appetite.
Half an hour later, Lan Ji returned in a hurry.
She quickly said, “Miss, I can’t find Xiao Bai. I searched everywhere, but I didn’t see her.”
The crease between Xiao Xinyue’s brows deepened.
Because of the contract, she could sense Bai Tang’s existence, and she was also more sensitive to Bai Tang’s aura. It was very obvious that Bai Tang was no longer here.
She had already left the mansion.
Bai Tang had been sent by her father. Xiao Xinyue had reluctantly accepted her. Bai Tang was naughty and mischievous every day. She had been here for less than a month. If she left, then she left. It would not cause any effect.
But why did Xiao Xinyue feel so empty inside? This feeling was far too unfamiliar. She would not feel reluctant to part with anyone, not even her own spirit pet.
Lan Ji asked, “Miss, should we go find her?”
Xiao Xinyue’s face was cold and dark. “I said before that if she ran around again, I wouldn’t want her anymore.”
Lan Ji remembered very clearly. Xiao Xinyue had indeed said such a thing. The aura around her was gloomy and heavy, and Lan Ji did not dare say anything more.
Xiao Xinyue stood and left.
Lan Ji looked at the Young Lady’s half-eaten dinner, then looked at Bai Tang’s untouched steaks. Her feelings were complicated to the extreme.
She cleared the dining table and was about to go search the woodshed again when she saw Xiao Xinyue leave the courtyard, her small, thin figure blending into the night.
Hadn’t she said she did not want Bai Tang anymore?
