Chapter 22

At night, Lan Ji made a feast.

Bai Tang ate very contentedly, her little belly swollen.

It had snowed again last night, adding a fresh layer. The courtyard was white once more.

Bai Tang ran outside holding the hand warmer. When she stepped onto the snow, it felt soft and fluffy.

Her stomach was too full, so she had to digest her food. The flowers in the courtyard had all withered, so strolling around felt as though something was missing.

Xiao Xinyue stood in front of the door, looking at Bai Tang in the courtyard.

She was a soft, tiny little ball. If not for the blue fur on her back, it would probably be hard to tell her apart from the snow.

Lan Ji walked over and draped a coat over Xiao Xinyue.

Xiao Xinyue did not look back. She said softly, “Thank you.”

Lan Ji thought she had misheard and said in confusion, “Miss, there’s no need to be polite. This is what I should do.”

Xiao Xinyue gathered the coat around herself, lowered her eyes, and said, “That isn’t what I meant. You were the one who told Bai Tang about my birthday, weren’t you? How could a little spirit beast like her possibly know that? The only source of that information was you.”

Lan Ji was surprised.

She had not expected the Young Lady to be talking about this.

Xiao Xinyue said again, “Thank you.”

Lan Ji’s feelings were very complicated at this moment. There was even a little happiness in them.

The Young Lady was actually very, very gentle.

Bai Tang grew tired from playing alone and lay down in the snow.

She hugged the warm hand warmer. Heat continuously spread from it, so she did not feel cold at all.

The sky was dim, and when she raised her eyes, she could see the stars.

Bai Tang felt a little troubled. The longer she stayed with the little villain, the more she understood her. This was a very bad thing.

She was afraid she would become reluctant to kill her.

“It’s this cold, and you still ran outside. Aren’t you afraid of catching a cold?”

Bai Tang shifted her gaze and saw Xiao Xinyue. Her little face was fair and clean, prettier than the snow.

Bai Tang lifted the hand warmer. “I have this.”

Xiao Xinyue touched Bai Tang’s head. Her fur was damp. Something pricked Xiao Xinyue’s palm. When she looked carefully, it was the little horn on Bai Tang’s forehead.

“Has it grown out a little?”

What had grown out?

Bai Tang sat up and touched her forehead with her paw.

She said blankly and foolishly, “My horn came out.”

Bai Tang had almost forgotten she had a horn. The little horn on her forehead had only been a tiny point before and was easy to ignore. Now she could clearly touch it. She did not know when it had grown out.

Xiao Xinyue parted her fur and examined it carefully.

The little horn was only about the length of one finger joint. It was transparent, very much like crystal.

Why did she have a horn like this?

Bai Tang had almost forgotten its existence.

Her eyes reddened, and mist gathered in her blue eyes. Her voice was sweet and soft. “Does it look ugly? Am I not pretty anymore?”

Bai Tang whimpered softly, her big eyes looking pitifully at Xiao Xinyue.

Xiao Xinyue had not expected her first reaction to be this.

She really was a narcissistic little stupid beast.

The transparent little horn was clear and bright, hidden among her snow-white fur. It did not lower Bai Tang’s appearance at all. Instead, it became a special highlight on her body.

Bai Tang waited and waited but did not hear an answer.

She sniffed with her little nose. “Say something.”

Xiao Xinyue said, “Mm. You’re uglier now.”

Bai Tang was about to cry.

Unwilling to give up, she asked, “Is it really ugly?”

Xiao Xinyue nodded.

Bai Tang’s tears fell. She did not cry loudly. Her watery eyes just looked at Xiao Xinyue, her little nose sniffling, making her look terribly pitiful.

Xiao Xinyue picked her up and walked into the house.

Bai Tang sobbed softly in her arms.

She had become ugly. No one would like her anymore. The young ladies in town would not play with her either.

Xiao Xinyue placed her in front of the mirror. “Look. Is it ugly?”

In the mirror, the white, soft little ball had cried herself into a messy little face. Her blue eyes were as clear as water, and the transparent little horn poked out from her snow-white fur. It did not look abrupt at all. Instead, it was very beautiful.

Bai Tang smiled, revealing her little fangs. She stared unblinkingly at herself in the mirror. “So pretty.”

Xiao Xinyue was amused by her.

Bai Tang heard her mocking laugh and pouted. “Where is it ugly?”

Xiao Xinyue said, “Ugly is ugly.”

The little villain’s taste was seriously flawed.

She was clearly super pretty.

Bai Tang jumped off the dressing table and spun around proudly several times, her mood extremely wonderful.

She turned around and stuck her tongue out at Xiao Xinyue. “Bad taste.”

After saying that, Bai Tang quickly ran away.

Xiao Xinyue laughed.

If her taste were truly bad, Bai Tang would not be her spirit pet.

—

At night, Bai Tang tossed and turned, unable to sleep.

She kept touching her little horn again and again, not used to it at all.

It must have grown out in the past two days.

Why had her body not grown, yet her horn had?

And just in time, she had also learned to speak.

Bai Tang suddenly made a huge discovery. Being able to speak was equivalent to one evolution, and her horn had also grown a little. Perhaps the two were related.

Bai Tang thought hopefully, Could she turn into a human?

Although she had long accepted the fact that she had become a spirit beast, if she could become human again, that would be the best thing possible.

Bai Tang tossed and turned.

For once, she had insomnia.

Xiao Xinyue said, “Don’t roll around.”

Fine, she would not roll around.

Bai Tang closed her eyes.

Her birthday had also passed. She had to carry out the assassination plan now. If she kept delaying, she feared she would no longer be able to bring herself to do it.

Only after a long time did Bai Tang finally fall asleep.

Xiao Xinyue saw that her belly was exposed, so she got out of bed and tucked the little quilt around her tightly.

—

When Bai Tang woke the next day, her mental state was poor.

The thought that she had to carry out the assassination plan every day made her feel strangely resistant inside.

Lan Ji said, “Breakfast is ready.”

Bai Tang slowly went to the dining room.

Lan Ji: “??”

Shouldn’t she have run over?

Bai Tang jumped onto the high chair, and a fragrant breakfast appeared in front of her.

Xiao Xinyue was eating casually.

Bai Tang began eating in big mouthfuls.

After finishing, she wiped her mouth with a handkerchief.

“I’m full.”

Lan Ji froze. She had been about to give Bai Tang another serving.

Bai Tang jumped down from the chair and ran outside.

Lan Ji said, “This is the first time Xiao Bai has eaten so little.”

Xiao Xinyue glanced at Bai Tang’s plate and said nothing.

Bai Tang ran to the courtyard, then burrowed into the woodshed. This was where she had first stayed. It was old and broken, but it gave her the greatest sense of security.

At first, she could only live here. Now, she was already living in the little villain’s room. It was truly strange.

She had to harden her heart.

The longer this went on, the harder it would be to act.

After spending so much time together, she already had feelings for the little villain.

Bai Tang stayed alone for quite a while. After calming down, she left the woodshed. She could not let emotions rule her. Her original goal had been to live freely.

If she lost even that, then what meaning would there be in living? So the little villain could only be sacrificed.

Bai Tang returned to the mansion and smelled something especially fragrant.

Her cravings were immediately stirred up.

Xiao Xinyue sat on the sofa and asked her, “Do you want roasted sweet potatoes?”

No wonder the fragrance was so strong.

Eating this in winter was especially blissful.

Bai Tang nodded, her eyes especially bright.

Lan Ji handed one to her.

Bai Tang held it with both paws and sat beside Xiao Xinyue, carefully peeling its skin.

The sweet potato was too hot, but it was only delicious when eaten warm.

Bai Tang tasted a bite. It was fragrant, sweet, soft, and sticky. Her eyes narrowed in satisfaction.

Lan Ji said, “Miss saw that your appetite was poor this morning, so she told me to roast a few sweet potatoes for you. She said you definitely like sweet things.”

Bai Tang had food smeared all over her mouth.

She blinked, then continued eating.

After eating three sweet potatoes, even her stomach felt warm.

Bai Tang pouted.

Why did Xiao Xinyue have to be so good to her?

Xiao Xinyue wiped her mouth. Wiping once was not enough, so she wiped a second time. After Bai Tang was finally clean, she looked pleasing to the eye again.

Bai Tang rolled over, exposing her soft belly. Her blue eyes looked upside down at Xiao Xinyue. “Why are you so good to me?”

Xiao Xinyue’s gaze landed on her soft white belly. “Giving you a few sweet potatoes counts as being good to you?”

It did not seem that good.

Then why had she been moved?

Bai Tang’s ears drooped, and she wilted.

Xiao Xinyue picked her up and placed her on her lap. She tugged at Bai Tang’s face. “Why are you so ugly?”

Bai Tang instantly puffed up angrily.

Where was she ugly?

She retorted, “I’m clearly very pretty.”

Xiao Xinyue smiled. “You are rather cute when you’re angry.”

Bai Tang became even angrier.

She let out a soft hum.

Xiao Xinyue pinched her ear. “Little cub, are you hiding something on your mind?”

Bai Tang was startled. She had been seen through.

No wonder the little villain had been teasing her just now.

Bai Tang argued, “No.”

Xiao Xinyue put her down. “Even if you do, it’s probably about what to eat.”

Bai Tang turned her back to her.

She was not that shallow.

A little cub should not have worries, but the little villain was just a little brat too, and she should not have worries either. Yet her thoughts were so heavy. She did not seem like a child at all.

She was already pitiful enough.

And yet Bai Tang still had to kill her.

—

At night, after Bai Tang bathed, she went to the room early.

She lay inside her little quilt, her heart beating very fast.

This feeling was exactly like the first time she had tried to assassinate the little villain.

Half an hour later, Xiao Xinyue came in.

She had just finished bathing and was drying her hair with a towel.

Clearly, she was so far away, but Bai Tang could already smell that pleasant fragrance.

The little villain was so pretty. Her skin was as white as snow. When she grew up, she would definitely become even prettier. Unfortunately, she would not get to grow up.

Xiao Xinyue glanced at her. “Why do you keep looking at me?”

Bai Tang immediately turned her head. “What’s there to look at? Narcissist!”

Xiao Xinyue chuckled softly.

Who the narcissistic one was remained unknown.

Using magic as well, Xiao Xinyue dried her hair, turned off the lights, and got into bed.

Bai Tang turned over and listened to the movements on the bed.

The darker the environment, the sharper her senses became. Her heart felt as if it was about to jump out.

Once the little villain fell asleep, she would take action. It had to be a single fatal blow. That way, the harm would be minimized and it would not be too cruel.

Bai Tang waited and waited, until she herself was about to fall asleep.

The little villain had to be asleep by now, right?

Bai Tang secretly climbed onto the bed and saw that the little villain’s eyes were closed. She looked very obedient while sleeping.

Bai Tang crawled to the head of the bed and looked at her for a long while.

“I will always remember you.”

Bai Tang prepared to act.

Xiao Xinyue opened her eyes. “Remember what about me? Also, don’t climb onto my bed. I don’t like others touching my bed.”

Bai Tang was startled.

What? She had clearly hugged Bai Tang while sleeping on this bed before.

Firelight lit up the room. Xiao Xinyue had used magic to illuminate it.

Being watched by her, Bai Tang became extremely nervous.

Xiao Xinyue examined her. “Remember what about me?”

Bai Tang stammered, “Remember… just remember.”

Xiao Xinyue stared at her, her eyes sharp. “Then why climb into bed, and why say it while I’m sleeping?”

Bai Tang rubbed her little head against her.

She raised her eyes, clear blue eyes looking at Xiao Xinyue, her voice young and sweet. “I can’t say it during the day.”

Xiao Xinyue said, “Is that so?”

The corners of her lips rose almost imperceptibly.

Bai Tang said softly again, “Can I… sleep with you?”
