A Cannon Fodder A Has No Intention of Moving Up - Chapter 28
There was a private lounge on the second floor of the bar.
Lin Yue had only intended to nap for a moment and return once she cleared her head, but when she opened her eyes, the sky had already turned dark. She froze and immediately sat up.
Shu Yan had likely already left, leaving a glass of water on the table for her. Tucked underneath was a small note saying she was sorry and would invite her to a more suitable activity next time.
Lin Yue rubbed her eyes and glanced at her phone. There were countless missed calls.
“!”
So many? Oh no. An Muxue must be furious. She shouldn’t have left her phone on silent.
Lin Yue rushed out. Downstairs, the bar was already in full swing—the roar of the crowd, the flashing lights, and the chaotic mix of scents rushed at her from the stairwell.
Lin Yue tried to reply to An Muxue’s messages while heading downstairs, but before she could hit send, the phone rang again. It was An Muxue.
Lin Yue picked up, wanting to apologize, but An Muxue spoke first.
“Lin Yue!”
An Muxue’s voice was initially anxious, but she paused, hearing the loud background noise on the other end. She seemed to get even angrier. “Where on earth are you?”
“I…” Lin Yue could only give her the address.
“Isn’t that the bar street? What are you doing there!”
Lin Yue had to cover her ear to hear the voice on the phone. “I’m sorry, I’m coming back right—”
“Stay right where you are! Don’t go anywhere, I’m coming to get you.”
“…Okay.”
Lin Yue scratched her head. Although she felt bad for being late, she didn’t think it was a massive problem—like being late for work. Once she saw An Muxue, she’d explain, apologize, and it would be fine.
She thought she’d head to the intersection to wait. Passing through the bar, she was surprised by how crowded it had become. The music was deafening, the lights were dim, and there were dancers performing on stage. Lin Yue didn’t look back, but as she was about to exit, she was suddenly blocked.
It was a tall, white female Alpha with short blonde hair, speaking in English. The music was too loud; Lin Yue didn’t catch what she said and just stared blankly. The woman laughed and suddenly leaned in close, almost pressing against her neck.
Lin Yue froze, then hurriedly pushed her away, her brow furrowed in anger. The woman had released her pheromones.
Lin Yue could only retaliate in kind. Abandoning language, she used her pheromones to communicate, telling the stranger she was an Alpha, not an Omega.
The blonde woman seemed surprised. Westerners often misjudge the age of Asians, usually thinking they look much younger. Lin Yue looked like a Beta even to other Asians, so these women had straight-up assumed she was an Omega.
Lin Yue wasn’t happy about it.
The Alpha didn’t get angry, though. She even excitedly called over a drunken blonde Omega friend. “Look! Someone this cute is actually an Alpha!”
The squinty-eyed Omega suddenly lunged at Lin Yue, her sticky arms hooking around Lin Yue’s neck. She leaned in for a sniff. “Wow, it’s true!”
Lin Yue’s hair stood on end. “What a unique scent. I like it, hehe. Stay and play with us!”
No thanks.
Lin Yue truly couldn’t stand their overly aggressive and rude behavior. She didn’t want to be talked about like a doll. She waved them off hurriedly and left.
It wasn’t until she was outside the bar that she let out a breath. She hadn’t expected people in bars to release pheromones so casually; it was… too open. No wonder the air inside felt so stifling.
She stood outside for a while, letting the wind cool her down. A familiar luxury car soon pulled up. An Muxue had arrived. Lin Yue exhaled, wanting to duck inside quickly. With so many people around, it wasn’t a good place for An Muxue to be seen.
Unexpectedly, before she could even touch the door, An Muxue burst out of the car aggressively. She scanned the surroundings for anyone suspicious, then grabbed Lin Yue, leaning in to sniff her entire body.
“Who was it?”
Not just Omegas—there were Alphas too! Lin Yue was stunned.
“No, I just picked up the scent coming out of the bar…” She didn’t expect such a strong reaction. She tried to explain with gestures. “They were strangers, they mistook me for—”
“Who would dare to do that!”
An Muxue raised her voice, her exquisite features crumpled in anger like a bristling ragdoll cat. She sniffed again. No, she was going to go in and find them to see if they were really “strangers”!
Lin Yue was terrified. There were so many people around, and the bar was even more packed. An Muxue wasn’t even wearing a mask; she couldn’t go in. Lin Yue hurriedly tried to pull her toward the car.
“Don’t pull me! I’m going to find out whose scent that is and show them what I’m made of!”
“Don’t! I really just accidentally bumped into them!”
She hugged An Muxue’s waist and finally managed to persuade her into the car. She had a feeling someone had just taken a photo. Worried, she looked out the window.
Inside the car, An Muxue didn’t let go. Not only did she keep sniffing around, but she even tugged at Lin Yue’s collar to look inside.
Lin Yue: “Mhm?”
An Muxue glared at her. “I’m checking if you did anything with anyone else.”
“An Muxue…” Lin Yue glanced at the driver; luckily, she didn’t understand Chinese.
“I asked you, did you?”
“No.” Of course not.
“Then why on earth are you back so late?”
Lin Yue explained again. “I had a little to drink and accidentally fell asleep.”
An Muxue didn’t believe her. “Then why did you go to a bar for no reason and come out smelling like that!”
The car started moving, but An Muxue was practically sitting on Lin Yue, pinning her to the seat and throwing a tantrum. “I told you that during the contract, you aren’t allowed to… were you lying to me?”
The “Ice Queen” of public perception was now acting like a little maniac, even biting her. Her sharp little canines nipped right at Lin Yue’s collarbone.
It hurt. Lin Yue sucked in a breath, breaking into a light sweat, and tried to push her away. But An Muxue wouldn’t let go of that thin patch of skin. Her breath brushed against Lin Yue’s neck.
Lin Yue suddenly froze. She smelled pheromones.
An Muxue had released her pheromones voluntarily. But it wasn’t the usual soft, sweet, inviting floral scent; it was cold, like needles—aggressive pheromones. They were like thorny vines wrapping directly around her neck, trying to scrub away any other scents.
Lin Yue shivered, but her heart was racing with excitement. “You… your body is better?”
An Muxue looked up, her beautiful, pale face and cold eyes illuminated by the neon lights outside. “I’m asking you a question.”
Her neck felt like it was being squeezed tight. Lin Yue struggled for breath, breaking into a cold sweat. “Don’t be like this.”
“Like what? You stopped picking up the phone and you won’t answer me!”
“I told you, I didn’t do anything! I just picked up the scent by accident…”
“Then why go to a bar!”
“An Muxue…” Lin Yue closed her eyes. Although the needle-like pheromones made it hard to breathe, she didn’t let An Muxue derail her. She opened her eyes, failing to understand. “I took a leave of absence, and I’m an adult. Why can’t I go to a bar?”
While it was her fault for not coming back early as promised, An Muxue shouldn’t use her pheromones to suppress her like this… It was disrespectful. Lin Yue felt a pang of hurt. An Muxue always called herself the “boss,” but no boss in the world was this unreasonable.
Moreover, it seemed she was already cured. Their relationship would likely be over soon.
An Muxue stared at her blankly. Her lips parted as if to say something, but she seemed choked up. She let go huffily and sat on the other side of the car. However, her pheromones remained cold, filling the car and making it hard for Lin Yue to breathe.
They remained in a cold war all the way back to the hotel. The tiny ice needles seemed to stick to her and prick her; Lin Yue’s head began to ache. She felt An Muxue didn’t like the scent on her and was using her pheromones to suppress it. She said nothing and went to take a shower.
Washed by the hot water, her mind calmed down. Stepping out, Lin Yue thought she should explain things properly to An Muxue. If all else failed, she’d tell her Shu Yan had asked for help. She had to believe Shu Yan meant no harm. She hadn’t said it earlier because she inexplicably felt it would ruin An Muxue’s impression of Shu Yan.
But when she walked into the living room of the suite, she found An Muxue sitting on the sofa, hugging her legs with her head down, crying. Lin Yue’s heart skipped a beat, and she hurried over, kneeling by her knees.
“An Muxue?”
Close up, she saw scripts lying next to her. Her eyes were red-rimmed, and her beautiful face looked tiny framed by her messy hair. Tears fell the moment she blinked.
“I spent the whole day filming scenes about how Alphas are unreliable. I had to get into character, I had to cry, I had to be hysterical. And then I couldn’t get a hold of you…”
“At first, I was worried something happened to you. I almost called the police. Then you said you were at a bar. That’s why I was so angry. Do you think I’m making a big deal out of nothing? That I’m being unreasonable?”
“I…” The proud movie star was now as fragile as paper. Lin Yue never imagined An Muxue would cry in front of her; she was instantly overcome with guilt. “I don’t…”
“You do. You blame me for not trusting you, don’t you? But in this story, they really loved each other at first. Why did it change?” She wiped her eyes, but the tears kept falling. “Is there really no such thing as a lifelong commitment? Is there no one who can truly stay together through thick and thin?”
“Of course there is. It’s not like that,” Lin Yue comforted her clumsily. “You’ll have that.”
“I don’t believe it anymore. You hate me too.”
“How could I? I don’t hate you.”
“You hated me today. You wanted to shake me off and stay far away from me.”
Seeing that she was about to cry again, Lin Yue promised hurriedly: “No. I will never hate you. I will always want the best for you… that won’t change.”
An Muxue looked at her with glistening eyes, like a little fox. “Liar…”
“I’m telling the truth.”
Lin Yue leaned in, hesitating over whether to offer a hug. An Muxue let out a whimper and suddenly reached out, pulling her into a forceful embrace and biting her shoulder.
“??” It hurt a bit. Lin Yue didn’t understand where this new bad habit had come from. She tried to pull back.
An Muxue let go immediately but still held her tight, her legs wrapping around her as well. Lin Yue could clearly feel her releasing pheromones again. Though no longer cold, they were still dominant—like soft, sweet, blooming flowers opening up in layers. She wouldn’t let her escape.
“Then apologize to me.”
An Muxue nuzzled against her ear, her arms tight. Lin Yue didn’t quite understand what she was apologizing for, but she said it anyway: “I apologize.”
“Not that kind of apology… I want a different one.”
An Muxue’s breath blew into Lin Yue’s ear. Her pheromones changed again, becoming like ripe nectar, sticky and binding. Lin Yue’s eyes lost focus.
But… wasn’t she already better?
The thought flashed through her mind, but An Muxue’s tears, her soft cheeks, and her cool nose were nuzzling her. The floral scent entwined her, making it nearly impossible to move. Lin Yue offered a tiny bit of resistance, but under An Muxue’s dissatisfaction, she ultimately couldn’t refuse.
The two held each other, exchanging pheromones in a long, drawn-out embrace.
By the time An Muxue was covered in sweat and had cried herself out, her chest was flushed red, and she looked like she’d been pulled out of a lake. She finally found the strength to shower. When she returned, Lin Yue was curled under the covers, already asleep.
The corners of her mouth turned up; she felt an inexplicable sense of peace and satisfaction. The storm had passed. She thought of nothing else and crawled in to hold her.
Everything seemed perfect. But the next morning, the assistant brought some bad news. Someone had actually photographed them yesterday.
