A Cannon Fodder A Has No Intention of Moving Up - Chapter 30
Lin Yue was stunned for a long time.
“Huh?”
“Don’t worry, it’s just to show everyone that you aren’t An Muxue’s fan.”
Shu Yan narrowed her eyes like a fox, making it impossible to tell for a moment whether she was telling the truth or not.
“We are both Alphas, after all. I’m not going to hold your hand.”
“Oh, okay.” Lin Yue let out a sigh of relief.
She had intended to say she needed more time to consider, but she had already been lured to the company’s front door. In the end, she was half-pulled and half-dragged inside by Shu Yan.
The director was actually very pleased with Lin Yue. He exchanged a look with Shu Yan—perhaps under her subtle hint—and gave Lin Yue a look-test right then and there.
When Lin Yue emerged from the dressing room, Shu Yan, who had been smiling while discussing the variety show script with the director, took one look and froze.
“You look very good, Yue-yue.”
“…”
Lin Yue didn’t feel happy at all; instead, she felt like rubbing off the mascara.
Shu Yan walked directly over to her, looped her arm through Lin Yue’s, and led her back to the mirror. She forced Lin Yue to admire her own face, which looked much more exquisite now with the makeup.
“So, go ahead and do it, okay? Didn’t you say you wanted to help me?”
Is there something not quite right about this?
Feeling uncomfortable, Lin Yue pulled herself out of Shu Yan’s sisterly embrace.
Is this the compensation Shu Yan wants… for ‘using’ her future wife?
An Muxue’s past two weeks hadn’t been very pleasant.
The wrap-up work for the script was busy. When she returned to the hotel, she was all alone, yet the place was full of memories of the two of them living together. In her heart, she couldn’t help but feel a tiny bit of resentment toward Lin Yue’s sudden departure.
The main issue was that Lin Yue hadn’t really contacted her since she went back. Although An Muxue herself hadn’t proactively reached out—fearing it was just withdrawal symptoms—couldn’t Lin Yue have sent her a few more messages?
For several nights, unable to sleep, she clutched her phone and agonized over whether the impulse to call Lin Yue was truly a withdrawal symptom or something else. After all, she had never been addicted to anyone else’s pheromones before.
By the second week, her symptoms hadn’t lessened; they had worsened. An Muxue suddenly had an epiphany: Her illness definitely wasn’t cured yet!
Consequently, she began to feel desperate to return home. A shoot that should have taken two weeks was finished in a little over a week due to her extraordinary performance.
On the plane, An Muxue specifically told Lin Yue she was coming back. Because of the time difference, Lin Yue didn’t reply. When An Muxue landed and looked at her phone with high expectations, she saw that Lin Yue had only replied with a “Good.”
What do you mean, “Good”?
An Muxue puffed out her cheeks. She almost wanted to tell her to come over immediately, but then she thought better of it; she was going for a check-up soon anyway.
When she went to the hospital the next day, An Muxue took an extra look around. Lin Yue used to wait for her at the hospital before, but this time, there was no one. An Muxue’s beautiful face was sour during the examination. She was just waiting for the doctor to tell her she wasn’t cured yet so she could go find Lin Yue and “punish” her.
Instead, Dr. Wu happily brought over the test results.
“Your glands are truly cured!”
“?” An Muxue didn’t process it for a long time. “Cured?” How is that possible?
“The data hasn’t completely returned to normal, but being able to release pheromones voluntarily means you’re more than halfway there.”
The doctor was initially delighted, but eventually noticed An Muxue sitting there with a very strange expression, looking not at all happy.
“More than halfway… that means it’s not fully cured.”
“But it’s not a big problem. You just need to practice releasing pheromones at home more often.”
“So I don’t need pheromone treatment anymore?”
The doctor waved a hand. “No more treatment needed.”
An Muxue bit her lip. She sat there for a long while, suffocating on her thoughts, before saying one thing:
“Test it again.”
Holding the final results, An Muxue lay listlessly at home for two days, interested in nothing. She even began to doubt Dr. Wu’s medical skills. How could I be cured? I clearly feel off! Maybe she had a disease that modern machines couldn’t detect yet…
Her sister, An Qi, was baffled and knocked on her door.
“Look, Sis, are you really that tired after filming? You won’t even go out for your birthday? Are you still jet-lagged?”
An Muxue didn’t want to talk to her. “What is it…”
“Let’s go out and play.”
An Muxue shut the door in her face. “I don’t want to.”
That night, unable to take it anymore, An Muxue called Lin Yue.
Lin Yue had been busy all day and was sleeping in her dorm. Just as she was about to drift off, her phone rang. To avoid waking her roommates, she picked up immediately and felt her way to the balcony in the dark. Squatting in the night breeze, she lowered her voice:
“An Muxue?”
An Muxue first heard Lin Yue’s hushed voice in her ear—it sounded quite nice—and then heard her ask with concern, “What’s wrong?”
An Muxue’s mood improved. She was about to say a few words when Lin Yue asked, “Did you go to the hospital for a check-up?”
Hearing this made An Muxue unhappy again. “I did.”
You haven’t contacted me for so long. Lin Yue said with relief, “Are you cured?”
An Muxue didn’t speak for a long time. Lin Yue looked at her phone in confusion. “Hello?”
The other side had hung up directly.
Lin Yue: “??” So… is she cured or not?
The variety show titled [Star Date Moment] began soon after. Lin Yue ultimately had to report to the production team on time.
The show’s gimmick was that “civilians” (non-celebrities) could date their favorite stars through hard work. Since An Muxue and Shu Yan were the star guests and the main draw for ratings, the meeting area even featured giant posters of the two. Even Lin Yue couldn’t help but look up.
Two truly magnificent faces…
She suddenly remembered that before she met An Muxue for the first time, she had seen her poster and felt she was utterly out of reach. No, Lin Yue shook her head, it’s actually the same now.
Including Lin Yue, eight people had arrived. Exactly four Alphas and four Omegas. Each contestant had to choose a star guest they felt “heart-fluttered” by and work hard to win a date with them. However, they could also change their minds at any time and date each other. The production team’s goal was to have everyone competing while simultaneously switching sides, creating a chaotic and highly watchable AO relationship web.
Lin Yue didn’t care about any of that; she just wanted to finish filming, get paid, and go back to class. Of course, if Shu Yan really would forget about her and stop her retaliation because she agreed to participate, then it was well worth it.
The other civilian guests stole glances at her, thinking the casting was quite good—not everyone was a “Cool Alpha” or “Beautiful Omega”; there were also cute Alphas like this pure, college-student type.
“Guests, attention!” the host suddenly shouted with excitement. “You are about to draw lots for groups. Only one group can snag the best accommodation and live directly with the star guests.”
Everyone else would have to stay in ordinary rooms, shacks, or even tents. To increase the chance of them falling for each other, the show let the four Omegas draw lots to decide who chose their Alpha teammate first. Two of the Alphas were male; they looked like they had more stamina, so they were chosen first. The remaining female Alpha also looked stronger than Lin Yue.
The girl who drew the last pick was stuck with Lin Yue. She was a small internet influencer, quite petite and frail, dragging a large suitcase. Thinking that the ruthless production team was about to make them race to the accommodation area at the top of the mountain, her world went dark. She felt they were doomed.
On the other side, in the villa at the mountain peak, An Muxue gracefully waved to the audience. Immediately, the live-stream screen was flooded with adoring comments. She smiled calmly, looking like a goddess far above human suffering.
The host interviewed her: “I wonder if Teacher An Muxue has seen anyone among our civilian guests who caught her eye?”
The answer should have been “no.” An Muxue was supposed to maintain her cold, distant persona throughout, avoiding any polyamorous drama and only cooperating with Shu Yan at the end. That was her condition for joining the show.
However, as she took a casual glance, her eyes widened. She almost forgot to control her expression in her surprise.
Did I see that right? Why is Lin Yue among the participants!
“If there is, you can choose to offer a ‘blessing’ to one group, and the production team will provide them with help during the upcoming race,” the host continued to explain.
An Muxue kept her eyes glued to the screen. Lin Yue was standing obediently in the corner, not saying much. Although she didn’t get much screen time, there was no way An Muxue could mistake her.
Why did Lin Yue come here? She could have gone straight to her house to find her, or even called her. Why come here… to “date” her?
An Muxue hesitated for a moment but followed the script: “No…”
Neither the host nor the viewers were surprised. An Muxue not looking at anyone was her normal state; if she had said she liked someone, her fans would have rioted. “As expected, winning Teacher An’s admiration is simply too difficult.”
After the host finished lamenting, he asked Shu Yan the same question. Shu Yan rested her chin on her hand and smiled. “I choose Group 4.” That was Lin Yue’s team.
An Muxue: “?”
According to the script, Shu Yan was also supposed to say she wasn’t interested. But this was a live broadcast. Even the host was stunned and looked at the small influencer in Lin Yue’s group.
“Wow! It seems Shu Yan likes the petite and cute type of Omega!”
Shu Yan smiled, neither confirming nor denying. The live chat was already exploding. Just as the host was about to move on, An Muxue frowned and suddenly spoke up.
“Wait.”
“I also choose Group 4.”
The host below received the message and immediately made a theatrical announcement: “One group has actually received the ‘heart-fluttering’ support of two star guests at once! That is our currently trailing Group 4.”
The Omega girl never expected to be chosen, let alone receive so much attention. Seeing the envious and jealous looks of the others, she felt like she’d hit the jackpot. Her face turned red with excitement.
Because they had the support of two stars, they were actually assigned a bicycle. Lin Yue studied it for a bit and successfully tied the luggage to it. She and the girl took turns riding while the other jogged. Although going uphill was tough, compared to the others who had to go on foot, they successfully won the race.
By the time she reached the villa, Lin Yue’s face was flushed from the exercise and she was inevitably sweating. She could clearly feel someone staring at her, but she didn’t dare look up.
An Muxue gripped the arms of her chair. She could smell the very faint scent of sandalwood in the air. Although she thought Lin Yue was being a bit reckless, seeing her made her throat go dry. Her cells seemed to become hungry; she couldn’t tear her attention away.
There’s no helping it, she thought. I’ll just have to wait until we finish recording, let Lin Yue confess to me in public, and then talk to her in private.
The host saw the two winning civilian guests arrive at the villa.
“Now, I am about to ask the most crucial question. Who is the ‘heart-fluttering’ star for our two participants?”
The girl immediately blushed. She hadn’t forgotten to touch up her makeup with a small mirror during the run, and she still looked exquisite in front of the camera. “Of course, it’s—An Muxue!”
“Wow,” the host cooperated with a look of surprise. The influencer smiled. Actually, she mainly felt that liking An Muxue would win her more favor with the audience.
The microphone was quickly moved in front of Lin Yue.
“So, is the star you admire in your heart also An Muxue?”
