Chapter 43
The walk-in closet had two entrances: one connected to the bedroom, and one connected to the bathroom.
If the marriage had only been a means to get through a crisis, then of course Shen Juan and Gu Yi’an would not have shared a room, and there would absolutely be no trace of Gu Yi’an left in this bedroom.
Eager to test her guess, Gu Shuge passed straight through the wall and entered the walk-in closet. Then she ran right into Shen Juan, who had just finished bathing.
Shen Juan had just chosen a set of pajamas, removed her bath towel, and was about to put them on when she felt Xiao Ge charge in dazedly from outside the wall.
The wave lines erupted with unprecedented frenzy. At a time like this, how could Shen Juan still care about figuring out what the wave lines meant? No matter how calm and adaptable she was, she was still a reserved girl. She would not know how to react after suddenly being seen naked by the person she loved.
Shen Juan lowered her head and could only rely on instinct, holding the pajamas in front of herself to cover her body. Her hands clenched the pajamas tightly and trembled uncontrollably.
Even the corners of Shen Juan’s eyes were somewhat red, and it was impossible to tell whether she was anxious, embarrassed, or annoyed.
She stood in place, her thoughts in utter chaos, wondering why Xiao Ge still had not left.
Then she sensed Gu Shuge move. She turned around rapidly and rushed into the nearest wardrobe. Shen Juan thought she had taken the wardrobe’s direction as a path and would pass straight through it into the bedroom. Although she was still flustered, seeing that Gu Shuge had finally left allowed her to breathe a little easier.
Yet before she could fully release that breath, she sensed wave lines continuously pouring out from inside that wardrobe, relentlessly surrounding her.
She was actually hiding inside the wardrobe and had not left. Shen Juan was so anxious that her palms were sweating, but the expression she had long trained to be calm and composed still looked extremely steady. Only the panic and embarrassment in her cool eyes could not be hidden. With trembling hands, she put on her pajamas.
Gu Shuge had panicked and chosen a path blindly, hiding inside the wardrobe. The wardrobe was pitch-black inside; she could see nothing. She stood there stiffly, hands and feet rigid, her mind filled entirely with the image of Shen Juan without clothes.
In truth, it had only been a few brief seconds. In truth, Gu Shuge had not seen any details. Because the moment her gaze landed on Shen Juan, her brain crashed completely, making her unable to think at all. By the time she came back to herself, all she thought was that she had to hurry away, and so she rushed into the wardrobe.
She lifted a hand and touched her own face. It was cold, like a spring deep in the mountains emitting a chill, yet she clearly felt that her face was so red it was about to burn, and her heartbeat was so fast it had nearly exceeded its limit.
Tiny sounds came from outside. It was the sound of Shen Juan putting on clothes.
Only then did Gu Shuge realize that she should not be staying here. She hurriedly passed directly through the wall attached to the wardrobe and floated outside.
What should she do? Had Shen Juan discovered that she had barged in?
Gu Shuge was so anxious she was about to cry. She floated around the bedroom for a while, then suddenly thought that it should be around nine now. Last night, her sense of presence had lasted until seven-thirty. Based on that, tonight, it should be until around nine. Shen Juan might not necessarily have sensed that she had gone in.
Once Gu Shuge thought this, she felt as though she had survived a desperate situation. She thought that as long as she observed Shen Juan’s reaction, she would know. And even if Shen Juan had sensed it, if Gu Shuge stayed calm, she could definitely handle it. After all, between girls, what was wrong with seeing each other a little?
She felt this made great sense, so she kept repeating one sentence to give herself courage. Only after repeating it several times did she realize that the sentence she had been chanting was, “Seeing a little is nothing, seeing a little is nothing.”
Gu Shuge felt that she was so perverted, and became angry with herself again.
The wave lines inside the wardrobe moved from near to far, leaving.
Only then did Shen Juan confirm Xiao Ge had gone out. She stood in place and calmed down for a while. Once she was able to think, she realized wave lines really did not mean contradiction.
She corrected her original view. Perhaps what she could sense was not Xiao Ge’s emotions, but some kind of signal that reflected emotions. She had sensed very intuitive emotional signals like joy and anger, but most of the time, there were still wave lines.
Wave lines were not contradiction. They were probably similar to excitement, or perhaps… emotions like a fluttering heart.
If that was the case, then over these past few days, almost every night, she had fallen asleep wrapped in Xiao Ge’s fluttering heart.
Once Shen Juan thought of Gu Shuge lying stiffly beside her at night, gripping her finger and not daring to move at all, only using wave lines to surround her, she felt that even those wave lines rushing over and circling around her were soft, fluffy, and adorable.
So from the moment Xiao Ge had become a yin ghost and started staying by her side without leaving even a step, she had been loved by Xiao Ge.
As soon as this thought arose, Shen Juan’s chest warmed, and even her eyes reddened slightly.
But fear did not let her go.
What if she had misunderstood again? What if she was indulging in wishful thinking? Xiao Ge could not withstand a second misunderstanding. Last time, she had still been able to leave, keep her distance, and go do what she liked. This time, if Shen Juan misunderstood again, Xiao Ge would have nowhere to go.
Then she would test it again, she thought.
She could not make the same mistake again. But she also did not want to waste any more time and miss Xiao Ge again.
When Shen Juan walked out of the walk-in closet, she sensed Gu Shuge sitting stiffly by the bed. The moment Gu Shuge saw her come out, she immediately sat even straighter, so straight that her body went rigid. Immediately afterward, the wave lines appeared again.
At first, they were small and short, radiating outward in segments with the little ghost as the center. As Shen Juan drew closer, the wave lines gradually grew longer, and their peaks and valleys became steeper.
Gu Shuge sat stiffly by the bed, both hands properly placed on her knees, her eyes fixed on Shen Juan without blinking.
Shen Juan walked over and sat beside her. The wave lines suddenly became violent, like an electrocardiogram abruptly fluctuating fiercely, perhaps even accompanied by beeping alarms. A smile appeared in Shen Juan’s eyes. Suddenly, all the wave lines vanished.
Shen Juan was startled and hurriedly sensed carefully.
Gu Shuge had lowered her head. Her hands, placed on her knees, had clenched into fists. She looked very nervous.
What was wrong with Xiao Ge?
Shen Juan did not understand at first, but she quickly figured out the reason. She had walked straight over and sat beside her, showing that she knew where Gu Shuge was and that her sense of presence had not disappeared. Then naturally, the matter of Gu Shuge barging into the walk-in closet just now could no longer be hidden.
After calming down, Shen Juan guessed that Gu Shuge must have gone into the walk-in closet for a reason. She was so stiff that she did not dare move even when sleeping beside her, so how could she intentionally peep?
Shen Juan defended Gu Shuge in her heart, then restrained the shyness and nervousness in herself. Calmly and naturally, she said, “Xiao Ge, where are you?”
Gu Shuge lowered her head more and more, as though she had committed some huge mistake. She felt she would not be able to escape this time. Shen Juan would definitely think she was reckless, careless, and rude. Perhaps she might even think Gu Shuge had ulterior motives.
She was so anxious she was almost crying. Suddenly hearing Shen Juan speak, she instantly lifted her head and looked at her. Shen Juan had only happened to sit here? She had not sensed Gu Shuge’s presence?
The curtains were drawn, and the room was brightly lit. Yet perhaps because hearts were restless, or perhaps because of something else, the bedroom, bright as day, dimmed in Gu Shuge’s eyes. It was as if even the air had slowed its flow and gained heat.
She bit her lip and cautiously tapped the back of Shen Juan’s hand once. After only one tap, she pulled back as though electrocuted.
Because Shen Juan had just finished bathing, the back of her hand was warm, smooth, and fine, like top-quality silk, and also like warm jade passed down through generations. It made one unable to bear putting it down and filled Gu Shuge’s whole heart with love.
Shen Juan said, “I washed for a bit long. Were you bored waiting?”
Gu Shuge quickly drew a cross on the back of Shen Juan’s hand. She secretly glanced at Shen Juan, and her heartbeat became violent again. After bathing, Shen Juan’s skin carried a faint pink flush. Her eyelids were slightly lowered, her long hair tucked behind her ears, and her long, fair neck seemed somewhat fragile, carrying a different kind of tender lingering softness.
She spoke softly. “We should prepare to use blood a second time.”
Preparing to use blood a second time meant Shen Juan would be responsible for drawing blood, while Gu Shuge would be responsible for mentally preparing herself to drink the fresh blood Shen Juan drew from her body.
It was not urgent yet, she thought. Although blood had a very vigorous metabolism, only a few days had passed. No matter how vigorous it was, it could not recover that quickly. She shook her head and wrote in Shen Juan’s palm, “Too soon.”
Shen Juan wanted to test Gu Shuge’s emotions and confirm whether there was truly a place for her in Gu Shuge’s heart. She had sensed the changes in the wave lines.
From the moment she came out of the bathroom, the closer she moved to Xiao Ge, the more wave lines appeared. When she sat beside Xiao Ge, the wave lines reached a peak.
After that, Xiao Ge secretly stole a glance at her, and the wave lines appeared again.
Such changes could not be explained by contradiction. A fluttering heart was the most reasonable interpretation.
Shen Juan was very happy. She thought, Xiao Ge still accepted her.
Joy flowed from the position of her heart like a thin stream, until her entire body was enveloped by that intense yet reassuring happiness.
Perhaps because she had confirmed the meaning of the wave lines, Shen Juan felt that these wave lines had all become soft, timid, and carried a little shyness, timidly circling around her.
Just as she was about to speak, she could no longer sense Gu Shuge’s presence. Today’s time was up, nearly two hours later than last night. In two days at most, she would be able to sense Gu Shuge’s presence all day.
Originally, she had thought this was already very fast. But now, Shen Juan became unsatisfied. She did not only want to sense Xiao Ge’s presence. She also wanted to see her appearance, touch her hand, her lips, and the softest, most sensitive place in her heart.
By the time the words reached her lips, unknowingly, they had become, “We should prepare to use blood a second time.”
Xiao Ge wrote in her palm that it was too soon.
Shen Juan shook her head very, very lightly. “I only feel it still isn’t fast enough. I want to see you right away.”
Those straightforward words made Gu Shuge’s heart clench into a ball. Shen Juan seemed completely unaware as she turned her head and looked straight toward the place where Gu Shuge was. She asked, “Xiao Ge, is there a place for me in your heart?”
Gu Shuge naturally understood what it meant to ask specifically whether there was a place for her in her heart. She just refused to believe it.
But Shen Juan seemed to feel that she was still not direct enough and said seriously once more, “I like you. Are you willing to accept me?”
In that instant, the wave lines were like a mountain flood, like wild waves, like a tsunami, surrounding and enveloping Shen Juan.
A fluttering heart was the best answer.
