After Losing My Memory, I Was Targeted by the Obsessive Movie Queen [gl] - Chapter 51
The ocean water was freezing, and a bone-chilling wind whipped up massive waves across the surface. The sea seemed enraged that anyone had fallen into its depths, churning relentlessly after the three people plunged in. Huge waves slammed against the reefs, sending up sprays of water that, along with the freezing wind, poured over the shivering hearts of the production crew.
Bundled up on top of the cliff, the crew members instinctively wrapped their coats tighter around themselves, everyone’s hearts suspended in sheer terror.
At the very first moment of the accident, the director had called the police and initiated emergency measures. Search and rescue personnel, along with local fishermen who knew how to swim, dove into the water immediately to save them. However, under such a heavy, dark sky, everyone’s heart was clouded with dread.
Moreover, a long time had passed since they rushed down from the cliff. The shore was crowded not only with the crew but also with many local fishermen who had come to check after hearing the news. The winter wind had already blown a sense of despair into everyone’s hearts.
It was right at this moment that a silhouette suddenly surfaced on the churning sea, struggling to maintain balance amidst the rolling waves. Lin Le and the others, who were keeping a desperate watch on the shore, spotted her almost instantly. They raised their arms and shouted, immediately sending people out in a boat to intercept her.
Yan He held the unconscious Lu Youqing in a death grip. Once they were brought to shore, she tightly cradled Lu Youqing and laid her on the ground, starting CPR and artificial respiration without a single second’s pause. Completely soaked through and blasted by the fierce wind, her entire body was shaking uncontrollably, yet her eyes remained fixed on Lu Youqing, unblinking.
Her ears were filled with water, and her mind buzzed with a loud hum. She could only feel her own violent heartbeat and frozen blood, which seemed to have stopped functioning the moment Lu Youqing went limp.
Seeing her drenched and shivering, someone nearby wanted her to rest first. But the moment they reached out to touch her, Yan He sensed it. She snapped her head up and stared dead at the person, her amber eyes resembling a pool of stagnant, dead water. It was so chilling that the person’s skin crawled, and they instinctively retracted their hand.
Yan He continued the chest compressions. Her face ached from the bitter wind, and her body shook violently. Her brain was completely numb, as if she had forgotten even who she was; at this moment, her entire consciousness held nothing but Lu Youqing.
Finally, the unconscious Lu Youqing showed a reaction. She coughed violently, choking up massive gulps of water, and her breathing finally returned.
Cheers erupted from the crowd. Yan He’s mind was still buzzing. Watching Lu Youqing gasp deeply for air, she finally stopped her movements and collapsed onto the ground, her legs completely giving out. She pulled Lu Youqing up to cradle her head in her lap, tenderly stroking her cheek.
“Lu… You… qing.” Yan He’s body was frozen stiff, making it difficult even to speak. She could only repeatedly murmur Lu Youqing’s name, wanting her to open her eyes and look at her.
Lu Youqing’s body was so cold. She already had a cold constitution, and now that she had fallen into the sea, her body was icier than ever before. Yan He could only catch her faint breathing, her heart feeling as though it had plunged into a bottomless glacial lake, aching so badly she felt on the verge of dying.
“Lu… Youqing, wake… wake up.”
“Lu Youqing, wake up.”
“A-He is here. A-He is here.”
She held Lu Youqing in a vice grip, refusing to let anyone touch her treasure. Her absolute state of alert and hatred rendered her senses exceptionally sharp. The moment she perceived anyone approaching, she would immediately snap her head up and stare them down, refusing to let a single soul close. She trusted no one.
Lu Youqing remained completely submissive and unconscious in her arms, but her heartbeat and breathing grew increasingly distinct. Her Lu Youqing had survived.
Shortly after, the ambulance arrived. Seeing how Yan He refused to let anyone near, Lin Le grew deeply worried. She stepped forward, biting the bullet under Yan He’s piercing gaze, and spoke up.
“Miss Yan, Miss Yan, the ambulance is here. Let’s send CEO Lu to the hospital for treatment, okay?”
Yan He stared fixedly at her. Though her mind was buzzing, her vision was perfectly fine. She didn’t know what Lin Le was saying, but through lip-reading, she caught the word “ambulance.” She immediately looked around and indeed saw medical personnel in white coats.
“Ambulance… ambulance… Lu Youqing…” she muttered relentlessly. Clutching Lu Youqing tightly in her arms, she tried to stand up and run over, but her strength had long been completely depleted. After taking only two steps, she fell heavily to her knees on the stone-strewn path. A sharp pain instantly shot up from her knees. She knit her brows, regaining a shard of sensation, but her arms never loosened around Lu Youqing, keeping her from falling.
“Save her!” Yan He looked at the ambulance, crying out at the top of her lungs. With the help of the medical staff, she finally managed to get Lu Youqing onto a stretcher.
Watching the unconscious Lu Youqing lie on the stretcher inside the ambulance, Yan He was about to climb in when a paramedic gently pressed her down onto a seat.
“Your legs are injured. Let me bandage them for you first.”
Dazed, Yan He looked down and saw blood seeping through her soaked pants. Delayed pain finally registered, but a fraction of a second later, she looked back at Lu Youqing, speaking to the doctor who was preparing an IV.
“Don’t worry about me. Save her quickly.”
The doctor couldn’t help but let out a frustrated, ironic chuckle. “Sit still first. Your injuries are serious, and the ocean water is filthy; it will get infected.”
It wasn’t until she saw Lu Youqing hooked up to the IV and undergoing various emergency treatments that Yan He’s heart, which had been suspended in that ice lake, finally regained a bit of sensation. She leaned back against the seat, her muddled consciousness slowly clearing. Looking at Lu Youqing’s pale cheeks, her heart was suddenly flooded with a terrifying aftershock of fear.
She didn’t dare imagine what would have happened if she had been a moment later in rescuing Lu Youqing. If she had let fear take over when facing the cliff, delaying her jump by even a second or two… would Lu Youqing… would she…
Yan He didn’t dare think further. She closed her eyes tightly, tossing all those chaotic “what-ifs” to the back of her mind. She wanted to reach out and hold Lu Youqing’s hand, but discovered she was so depleted she didn’t even have the strength to lift her arm. Her entire being felt like a puddle of water.
Sitting on the seat, she stared at Lu Youqing, using every ounce of her remaining strength to extend her hand toward her. Her amber eyes grew increasingly hazy, and the moment her fingertips finally brushed against Lu Youqing’s, she lost consciousness completely.
When she opened her eyes again, she was in a bright hospital room. The heavy, waterlogged clothes she had been wearing had been changed into a hospital gown. Sniffing the familiar scent of disinfectant once more, the heavy burden in Yan He’s heart eased considerably.
She threw back the covers and stood up, intending to go find Lu Youqing immediately. But the moment her feet touched the floor and she tried to step forward, a wave of intense pain and exhaustion wracked her body, the ache in her knees being particularly sharp. She had to lean against the door for support, stopping a passing nurse.
“Excuse me, could you tell me which room Lu Youqing is in?” she asked urgently.
The nurse looked at her, her eyes suddenly lighting up. “Are you that… that…”
Yan He cut her off: “Yes, I am!” Regardless of what the nurse was about to say, she just affirmed it.
“Lu Youqing is in the room right next to yours. She woke up half an hour ago, ate a little, and went back to sleep. Keep your voice down so you don’t wake her,” the nurse told her, before walking away, not forgetting to look back at her as she distanced herself.
Yan He felt a bit puzzled but didn’t dwell on it. She forced herself to walk through the pain to the adjacent room. Peeking through the glass window on the door, she saw Lu Youqing lying on the bed, sound asleep. Sunlight spilled through the window across the sheets; Lu Youqing’s cheeks were no longer paper-white but bore a touch of flush under the light, looking far healthier.
Recalling what the nurse had said, Yan He slowly turned the handle and stepped inside. The moment she entered, she found Lin Le there as well.
Seeing her, Lin Le quickly stood up and offered her chair. “CEO Lu just fell asleep. I brought some porridge for her. Miss Yan, how are your injuries?”
Yan He shook her head, indicating she was fine. She braced herself against the bed frame, enduring the pain as she slowly sat on the chair beside Lu Youqing. Looking at the softly sleeping woman, she let out a quiet sigh. The profound anxiety that had gripped her vanished completely upon seeing a living, breathing Lu Youqing.
“Did Lu Youqing say she felt uncomfortable anywhere when she woke up?” Yan He rubbed her aching body, looking up at Lin Le.
“No. When CEO Lu woke up, she only asked me where you were. I told her you were resting in the room next door. CEO Lu originally wanted to get up and find you, but the doctor said it’s best if she doesn’t move around for the next few days, so she stayed in bed. She fell back asleep after having a bit of porridge.”
“Have you eaten anything? I bought two portions and was just about to bring yours over.” Lin Le opened an unopened takeout container from the side table. The crisp aroma of porridge enveloped Yan He’s nose, making her exhausted body feel even heavier.
Yan He took the bowl and softly offered her thanks.
Lu Youqing’s medication seemed to contain a sedative effect; she slept for a long time, and Yan He sat by the bedside waiting for just as long. During this time, Lin Le walked back in, and seeing her still sitting there, she couldn’t help but gently urge her.
“Miss Yan, you should go rest first. I’ll keep watch here. You have injuries of your own; you need to recuperate properly.”
Yan He snapped out of her daze and looked up, offering her a bitter smile.
“Just let me stay here. Only when I’m looking at her, when I’m close to her, does my heart feel a little easier.”
Her chest was constantly plagued by a lingering unease; it only settled when Lu Youqing was in her sights. Staying by her side like this didn’t feel like a chore; it felt like a mercy. Only by looking at Lu Youqing could her mind find peace, and only then would her chaotic brain clearly reassure her that Lu Youqing had survived and there was no need to fear anymore.
Thinking of this, the memory of the black-clad man who had pushed Lu Youqing down surfaced, and her eyes turned dark and sharp. Shifting her stiff body, she walked to the door with Lin Le, speaking in a low whisper.
“The man in black… did they catch him?” Yan He’s voice carried a dense rage, which she deliberately suppressed, making her sound like a predator waiting to strike.
Lin Le replied, “I actually came up to tell you about that. That man is dead.”
Yan He froze, her brows instantly knitting tight. “Dead?” She hadn’t even made that man pay the price he deserved; dying like that was far too easy on him.
“Yes. The salvage boats searched that area for two hours and eventually found his body on the shore when the tide went out. He had already been dead for several hours. Fibers from the coat CEO Lu was wearing when she fell were found under his fingernails, so it should definitely be him.”
Yan He let out a deep sigh, her tone dropping low, void of readable emotion. “He died too soon.”
Lin Le startled, instinctively swallowing her saliva. As a witness to the entire event, she could naturally feel Yan He’s raw hatred for the man who pushed Lu Youqing. Lu Youqing had nearly been buried forever in the sea because of him; as her assistant, Lin Le was furious too, but she hadn’t expected Yan He to state it so blatantly.
“As for his identity and his motive for pushing CEO Lu, the police are still investigating. There are bodyguards guarding the hallway outside, so you and CEO Lu are safe for now,” she added simply.
Yan He nodded. Since the person was already dead, no amount of anger could change things. She sighed to vent some of the frustration in her chest. Just as she was about to walk back to the bed, she suddenly recalled the nurse’s strange reaction earlier.
“By the way, when I asked the nurse which room Lu Youqing was in earlier, she asked me a very strange question.”
Lin Le looked puzzled. “A strange question?”
“Yes. She asked if I was a certain someone. But I was too anxious to find Lu Youqing at the time to pay attention. Does this matter have something to do with Lu Youqing?”
Even though Lin Le had assured her they were protected by bodyguards and wouldn’t encounter trouble, Yan He’s heart remained frantic. She simply couldn’t settle down; whenever anything felt slightly off, she feared it meant danger for Lu Youqing.
Lin Le pondered for a moment upon hearing this, then pulled out her phone and handed it to Yan He.
“That nurse probably saw this.”
Yan He took the phone and looked down, expecting something grave, until her eyes caught a trending topic badge stamped with a solid red character for “Explosive.”
