After Losing My Memory, I Was Targeted by the Obsessive Movie Queen [gl] - Chapter 54
Lu Youqing leaned half against the bed, her eyes bright and teeth pearly. Clad in her blue-and-white hospital gown, her cheeks were flushed with a touch of rose under Yan He’s meticulous care, looking far healthier than before.
She caught a corner of Yan He’s shirt, tugging it gently back and forth—a motion that swayed its way straight into Yan He’s heart.
“A-He, just promise me, please. If you aren’t here, I really won’t be able to sleep.” Her voice seemed soaked in the absolute sweetness of an entire spring, petulantly broadcasting an affection that would make anyone willingly dissolve into a warm, gentle sea.
The tips of Yan He’s ears caught fire at her ambiguous words, the heat traveling fast to flush her cheeks. She tilted her head slightly; though immensely delighted, she still feigned a reluctant posture and nodded under Lu Youqing’s adoring gaze.
“Fine then, since you put it that way.”
Hearing this, Lu Youqing released her grip on the shirt, her brows curving as she smiled at her.
“A-He is such a tsundere.”
“No, I’m not.”
The two didn’t tease each other any further. After finishing their meal, Yan He intended to support Lu Youqing to handle some simple washing up, but she forgot that she hadn’t gone to find the doctor to change her own dressings. The recently closed wound split open, and the knee of her blue-and-white hospital pants was instantly saturated with a crimson stain. She let out a muffled groan and froze.
Lu Youqing’s face filled with shock. Looking down, she also caught the blood seeping continuously through the fabric, soaking a large patch over her knee.
“A-He, what’s wrong!” Ignoring her own physical weakness, Lu Youqing propped her body up, lunging forward to support her.
“You lied to me. You’re clearly injured.” Lu Youqing slammed down on the call button, suddenly realizing that Yan He’s previous assurances were nothing but comforting words. Her heart felt as if it were being squeezed in a vice grip, her eyes rimming with red as her voice turned thick with anger and sorrow, yet she still moved swiftly to guide Yan He onto the mattress.
“Don’t move around, the doctor will be here in a second.” Her voice was sharp and she looked furious, yet her eyes were on the verge of spilling tears.
Yan He panted softly as she looked at her. The sudden pain had left her face pale, cold sweat breaking out across her forehead. She gritted her teeth to suppress a groan, but watching Lu Youqing’s red-rimmed eyes look at her with such desperate worry, her heart felt as if it were being sliced by a thousand blades.
“I’m sorry.” She lowered her head slightly, not daring to meet Lu Youqing’s misty eyes, offering no further defense. Like a little beast that had committed a grave error, she quietly awaited Lu Youqing’s final judgment.
Soft, slightly cool fingertips brushed across the corner of her eye, wiping away the physiological tears triggered by the sharp pain, before catching hold of her limp hand. Lu Youqing’s gentle, warm voice echoed beside her ear like a soft breeze through the rain.
“Don’t hide things from me, okay? Don’t hide it and keep it from me just because you’re afraid I’ll worry. It really terrifies me.”
Lu Youqing kept her head down, her long lashes trembling. She had turned incredibly fragile and rigid, as if the slightest hint of concealment from Yan He would break her heart. Her insecurity drove her to frantically demand unreserved devotion from Yan He—which included transparency in everything she did.
Yan He slowly lifted her eyes, meeting Lu Youqing’s clear yet trembling gaze. A wave of bittersweet ache flooded her chest. Lu Youqing had only just been pushed into the sea; she had no one left except her, and the only person she could rely on was Yan He. Thinking this, Yan He squeezed Lu Youqing’s hand tight, locking eyes with her as she nodded.
She followed the doctor to the adjacent ward to have her dressings changed. By the time she returned, Lu Youqing had already tucked herself obediently under the duvet, leaving only her pure, clean face exposed. Due to her exhaustion and the effects of her medication, she was drifting off, yet she stubbornly forced herself to stay awake.
Catching the sound of the door opening, she struggled to open her eyes, her misty pupils reflecting a touch of daze.
“A-He?” she called out instinctively, her voice laced with an elegant drowsiness and heavy sleep.
Yan He naturally knew exactly what Lu Youqing was forcing her heavy eyelids open to wait for. She walked over quietly, reached out to shield Lu Youqing’s eyes, and murmured tenderly, “I’m here. Hurry up and sleep. I will stay right beside you the whole time.”
Securing Yan He’s promise, Lu Youqing ceased her struggle. She reached out, took Yan He’s hand, and pressed it against her chest over her heart, closing her eyes and falling into a deep sleep shortly after.
Lu Youqing’s breathing beside her grew shallow and rhythmic. Yan He watched her in silence, meticulously tracing her features with her gaze, wanting to etch every detail of this tableau deep into her soul.
Yan He smiled softly, preparing to slide her hand from Lu Youqing’s grasp. She hadn’t expected that even in her deep slumber, Lu Youqing would maintain a vice-like grip on her fingers. Yan He applied a bit of leverage, but far from sliding free, she merely caused Lu Youqing’s beautiful brows to knit slightly, showing signs of waking up.
Is she so void of security that she won’t even loosen her grip while asleep?
Staring at the hand held by Lu Youqing, feeling the steady thumping of the heart beneath her palm, Yan He suddenly realized that their positions had undergone a total reversal.
Initially, when she first woke up in the hospital with amnesia, she was the one who couldn’t bear to leave Lu Youqing’s side, constantly deploying tactics just to get a closer look at her. But now, staring at the sleeping Lu Youqing, Yan He offered a faint smile.
Right now, she still couldn’t do without Lu Youqing, and she was absolutely certain that Lu Youqing couldn’t do without her either.
They were exactly the same.
Unwilling to disrupt Lu Youqing’s sleep, Yan He could only maintain the posture, awkwardly climbing onto the mattress to recline beside her. She turned off the small nightstand lamp, plunging the room into total darkness. Lu Youqing’s silhouette turned soft and warm in the shadows. Yan He lifted her hand, planting a tender, lingering kiss on the back of it, her lips parting to whisper a silent goodnight.
In the dead of night, Lu Youqing suddenly began to run a fever. Yan He was already a light sleeper, and because she had been keeping a close watch on Lu Youqing’s condition, she noticed the anomaly the exact instant the fever broke out.
Turning on the lamp, pouring water, and calling the doctor—she jumped out of bed and executed everything with rapid precision, before returning to the bedside with a glass of warm water, urgently calling Lu Youqing’s name in a soft whisper.
Lu Youqing seemed trapped in a dream; she looked in immense distress, as if the nightmare held something she feared deeply. Yan He could only catch her lips constantly parting to whisper something. Leaning closer, she realized Lu Youqing was repeatedly whimpering, “Sister.”
Yan He was frantic with worry. Lu Youqing’s sister was the most vulnerable scar in her heart. Her constitution was already weak, and now she had caught a chill from falling into the ocean in the dead of winter and was dreaming of her sister; Yan He was terrified she would be in unbearable pain upon waking.
Thinking fast, Yan He sat on the edge of the bed, hoisted the murmuring Lu Youqing into her arms, and held her tight, speaking relentlessly into her ear. The scorching heat of Lu Youqing’s fever radiated onto her skin, making her feel as though her own heart were catching fire.
“Lu Youqing, Lu Youqing, A-He is here. Sister is here.”
The doctor hurried inside and set up an IV. The sharp sting of the needle piercing her skin brought a shred of consciousness back to Lu Youqing. She blinked her eyes open in a daze, her pupils appearing exceptionally bright from the fever, as if pooled with water.
“A-He,” she whimpered through trembling lips, reaching out to cup Yan He’s cheeks with an almost reverent devotion, her vacant eyes staring at her fixedly.
“Are you truly A-He?” Her fingertips traced Yan He’s features with extreme precision, traveling from her brow bone to her nose bridge, before settling upon her lips.
Yan He didn’t know what Lu Youqing had dreamed of, but she knew it must be something that broke her heart. She quickly took hold of the hand Lu Youqing had placed on her face, letting her feel her physical presence more clearly.
“I am A-He. I am your A-He. Don’t be scared, don’t be scared. What happened just now was a dream, it wasn’t real. I’ve been right here accompanying you the entire time.”
Her reassurance successfully quieted Lu Youqing’s panicked heart. Lu Youqing merely stared at her blankly, her trembling eyes gradually refocusing as the terror and insecurity began to dissolve. Her voice was incredibly raspy, so Yan He carefully fed her the water bit by bit.
Thanks to Yan He’s meticulous care, Lu Youqing’s distress eased considerably. She merely stared at her without a word, before finally curling into a tight ball against Yan He’s chest and falling back into a heavy slumber under the sedative effects of the medication—a posture that screamed extreme vulnerability.
Staring at her form and feeling the radiant heat coming from her skin, Yan He felt her heart twisting painfully, as if tossed into a churning glacial lake. She wished her own body temperature could be cold, just so holding her would bring Lu Youqing some comfort.
After supervising Lu Youqing to drink water and take her medicine, she remained on high alert, not daring to fall asleep out of fear that the fever might return. It wasn’t until the latter half of the night, when Lu Youqing’s temperature finally dropped completely back to normal, that she let out a long sigh of relief. Placing the medicine by her pillow, she finally dared to wrap her arms around Lu Youqing, closing her eyes to sleep.
Barely two or three hours after Yan He fell asleep, Lu Youqing snapped awake from her lingering nightmare.
