I Turned Out To Be The Paranoid Villain’s White Moonlight - Chapter 12
Lu Ningning had probably never met anyone like her before. Her face turned bright red, and she could not speak for a long while.
Zhan Yao shook her head and looked at her speechlessly. Was that all? She could not take it after only a couple of remarks? Her fighting ability was far too weak. Zhan Yao had not even enjoyed herself yet.
“Do you need anything else?” she asked, disdaining to remain beside Lu Ningning any longer. “I’m leaving if you don’t.”
She was about to turn away when Lu Ningning continued gripping her wrist, refusing to let go. She was surprisingly strong, and her grip was painfully tight.
Zhan Yao looked at her twice. Realizing that Lu Ningning intended to keep making trouble, her temper instantly flared.
“Let—”
Before she could finish, a voice suddenly came from behind her.
“Let go.”
It was a beautiful voice, but also a cold one. Zhan Yao turned and met Yu Wanqiao’s gaze.
“Why did you come?”
“You were gone for too long, Yaoyao. I was worried, so I came looking for you.” Yu Wanqiao gently pulled Zhan Yao to her side without sparing Lu Ningning another glance. “Security.”
“P-President Yu, don’t throw me out!” Lu Ningning panicked briefly when Yu Wanqiao suddenly appeared. However, realizing that this was one of her few opportunities to speak directly with her, she hurriedly gathered her courage again. “I’m a member of the Lu family. My name is Lu Ningning.”
“I’ve admired you for a very long time!” Temporarily ignoring Zhan Yao’s presence, she stared worshipfully at Yu Wanqiao’s face. “I’ve known about you since I was very young. As I grew up, I always treated you as my idol and role model. I-I truly, truly like you very much…”
She was so excited that her words had become somewhat incoherent.
The general meaning was probably that she genuinely liked Yu Wanqiao.
However, after several seconds of silence, Yu Wanqiao spoke coldly.
“Is that so? And?”
“S-So…” Lu Ningning froze at the question. “Could you look at me more?”
“What’s so good about Zhan Yao?” she demanded. Merely seeing Zhan Yao standing beside Yu Wanqiao made her miserable. “Does she know what kind of person you truly are? Does she know how many setbacks and hardships you faced on the road to success? Does she know how to care for you, share your burdens, and ease your worries? She can’t, but I can!”
Good grief. Her face was practically as big as a washbasin.
Even Zhan Yao instinctively rolled her eyes. She glanced sideways and saw that Yu Wanqiao’s expression had indeed darkened once more.
“It sounds as though you understand me better than my fiancée does,” Yu Wanqiao soon said again. Her voice was even colder and more severe than before. “Not only do you clearly understand what kind of person I am, but you also know exactly what I have experienced throughout my life.”
“That is truly astonishing. You seem far more professional than a corporate spy,” she continued. “It appears I shouldn’t have called security. I should have called the police directly.”
“Why don’t you give the police a proper explanation of everything else you know about me?”
Zhan Yao had not expected her to say that.
She immediately struggled to suppress her laughter. She would have to ask Yu Wanqiao later who had taught her this.
Sure enough, Lu Ningning could no longer say a word.
Yu Wanqiao looked toward the security guards again. They immediately understood and stepped forward to drag Lu Ningning away.
At first, Lu Ningning was too devastated to recover. Only when they had dragged her near the entrance did she finally react and scream hysterically, “What are you doing? I’m a member of the Lu family!”
“Are you?” The guard restraining her was not intimidated in the slightest and spoke in a thick local accent. “We just reported it to the people in charge, and they said they don’t have any relative like you.”
“What are you doing all this for?” he continued, unable to believe that such a person had slipped in among tonight’s honored guests. “Don’t force something that doesn’t belong to you. Anyone with eyes can see those two are the perfect match. Why did you have to interfere? If I were you, I’d be too ashamed to show my face.”
She had been lectured three times in a single evening.
Both furious and humiliated, Lu Ningning burst into tears without caring about her image. Combined with the way she was being dragged away, she became quite the striking spectacle.
“…”
The farce finally ended.
Zhan Yao sighed. Much of her earlier good mood had been ruined, but the two remarks Yu Wanqiao had used against Lu Ningning had genuinely surprised her. She had not expected Yu Wanqiao to be so skilled at this too.
“Wanqiao, who taught you to do that just now?”
“What?” Yu Wanqiao looked at her.
Zhan Yao did not know whether it was merely acting, but the way Yu Wanqiao looked at her now truly seemed very gentle.
For some reason, Zhan Yao suddenly remembered what Lu Ningning had said about a white moonlight.
“Does Yu Wanqiao have a white moonlight?” Zhan Yao asked the system inside her mind. She did not remember reading anything about it in the novel.
The system quickly replied, “I don’t know. The information available to me doesn’t include absolutely everything.”
“…”
Asking had been pointless.
Zhan Yao sighed and soon spoke again.
“It’s nothing.”
“I was just suddenly curious.” She looked into Yu Wanqiao’s eyes. “Do you… like women who play the piano?”
After she spoke, Yu Wanqiao paused for several seconds. Her gaze also seemed unnatural for a brief moment.
However, she did not answer and instead turned the question back on her.
“Do you like playing it?”
Zhan Yao shook her head. “No.”
She knew how, but she did not enjoy it.
“Then neither do I,” Yu Wanqiao immediately replied, the corners of her lips curving slightly upward.
Evasive.
Zhan Yao felt that she had seen right through her. That was clearly a blatant attempt to brush off the question.
The original novel had never mentioned any white moonlight, but it had stated that Yu Wanqiao never had another lover before her death. She had money, beauty, and everything else she could possibly want. Unless there was some particular reason, she had no need to remain alone like that.
Zhan Yao had previously assumed that she had no interest in romance. Only now did she realize that there might be another explanation.
“I heard that you’ve always had someone else in your heart?” Unwilling to give up, Zhan Yao asked another question.
Yu Wanqiao clearly had not expected her to say that. The surprise in her eyes was unmistakable.
Even her voice sounded hesitant and unnatural as she seriously explained, “No. Never.”
Zhan Yao: “…”
All right. Just look at yourself. I’ve already seen through everything.
They were only in a contract marriage, so Yu Wanqiao truly had no obligation to explain too much to her. Zhan Yao understood, but she still sighed regretfully. Judging by the original novel’s development, that white moonlight had probably never returned.
She finally understood why Yu Wanqiao had become mentally ill. Who could endure something like that?
Zhan Yao blinked. The tiny flutter she had felt because of the cake incident had now completely disappeared.
All she needed to do was properly play the role of Yu Wanqiao’s lover.
Of course, if Yu Wanqiao suffered an episode someday, Zhan Yao would not be unwilling to offer verbal comfort and some ordinary humanitarian concern.
“…”
But that would cost extra.
Zhan Yao still had classes the next day, and it was already quite late. Combined with the farce earlier, she was clearly no longer in much of a mood after returning.
Yu Wanqiao seemed to notice. After sitting for only a short while longer, she said goodbye to Old Master Lu.
“That’s fine, that’s fine. Since you still have matters to handle, Little Yu, you should leave early. Be careful on the road.” Old Master Lu nodded in understanding and asked that they arrange another private gathering when they had time.
Yu Wanqiao agreed.
Before long, she and Zhan Yao returned to the car.
The summer night remained somewhat hot and humid. The driver had been waiting inside the car for a long time and had adjusted the air conditioner to the most comfortable temperature. When he saw them return, he hurriedly opened the door and invited them inside.
In public, Zhan Yao and Yu Wanqiao still appeared to be a sweet and loving couple, so they naturally sat together in the back.
The car soon started moving toward the city center again.
Gradually, Zhan Yao began to feel sleepy.
There was still some distance left to travel. After checking the time, she found herself unable to endure it any longer and informed Yu Wanqiao, “I’m a little tired. I’ll sleep for a while. Wake me when we get home.”
“All right.” Yu Wanqiao nodded, took out a thin blanket, and covered her with it. “You’ve been wearing high heels all evening. You must be tired, Yaoyao. Why don’t you take them off?”
“That sounds good.” Zhan Yao sleepily kicked her shoes aside and curled her entire body beneath the thin blanket.
She quickly fell asleep. Her slender body disappeared beneath the blanket, her eyes tightly closed and her breathing deep. Even her eyelashes trembled faintly in rhythm with each breath.
She looked almost excessively well-behaved. Anyone who saw her would feel their heart soften.
Yu Wanqiao was no exception.
However, she soon noticed that Zhan Yao seemed cold. The blanket covering her was too short and could only barely cover her body. Whenever she moved, her crossed feet resting on the seat would become exposed.
Zhan Yao slept uneasily and continued trying to curl inward even in her dreams.
“Turn down the cold air,” Yu Wanqiao soon instructed the driver.
“All right.” The driver immediately nodded and adjusted it.
He looked into the rearview mirror, intending to ask whether President Yu had any other instructions.
However, he soon witnessed a scene that left him stunned.
President Yu had personally placed Miss Zhan’s feet on her lap and was repeatedly warming them with her hands.
Was this truly the President Yu they knew?
She was being so gentle and considerate. Could something have possessed her?!
“Focus on driving.”
Before he could continue thinking, Yu Wanqiao’s voice came from behind him. Her tone was as cold and serious as usual, perfectly matching the person he knew.
It appeared she had not been possessed.
Miss Zhan was simply receiving special treatment.
The driver did not dare say anything more. Afraid that Yu Wanqiao would become angry and cost him his job, he hurriedly withdrew his gaze and concentrated on driving.
“Y-Yes…”
