I Turned Out To Be The Paranoid Villain’s White Moonlight - Chapter 24
Xiao Yue and the others had witnessed the entire exchange from the sidelines.
Jiang Anran had stormed in aggressively and clearly did not seem easy to deal with. Xiao Yue and the others had been somewhat frightened and even worried that Miss Zhan might suffer a loss against her.
Especially after the woman shamelessly boasted about how extraordinary her relationship with President Yu was.
But unexpectedly—
They might have been afraid, but Miss Zhan certainly was not. With only a few sentences, she had nearly angered the woman to death. Now that was true skill!
Who was their Miss Zhan? No one could ever outargue her!
At that moment, an inexplicable sense of victory rose in Xiao Yue’s heart. She glanced sideways at the others and discovered that everyone else was secretly delighted too.
Before they could enjoy themselves for long, however, Zhan Yao looked up at them.
“Why are you still standing there? Is dinner ready?”
“Oh—yes, yes, it is.” Xiao Yue hurriedly answered. Only then did she realize she had become so engrossed in watching the show that she had nearly forgotten what she was supposed to be doing. “We’ll bring it over immediately, Miss Zhan.”
“Mm.” Zhan Yao nodded and finally withdrew her gaze.
She looked toward Jiang Anran, who was sitting on the sofa and practically dying of anger.
“Miss Jiang, the mistress of the house is about to dine. Forcing yourself to remain here would hardly reflect the manners expected of a lady.”
“Are you leaving by yourself, or should I have someone escort you out?” Her almond-shaped eyes curved as she smiled. “Or perhaps… I should send you off personally?”
She placed particular emphasis on the word send.
Jiang Anran looked up at her, inexplicably chilled by her smile.
“Tsk!” She could no longer remain seated. She had the feeling that Zhan Yao would do something excessive if she stayed any longer. “Fine, I’ll leave. President Yu isn’t here anyway, so I can’t be bothered wasting more words on you.”
“Who do you think you are?!” Seemingly afraid Zhan Yao might hit her, Jiang Anran only dared turn around and leave one final threat after reaching the doorway. “So what if you registered your marriage? Someone like you and President Yu don’t belong in the same world. You’ll get divorced sooner or later!”
Just then, Housekeeper Yang entered carrying a fresh, live sea bass she had recently collected.
“You’re leaving, Miss Jiang?” she asked, apparently intending to exchange a few polite words. “Would you like me to have the driver take you—”
Before she could finish, her hand slipped for some unknown reason.
The fish had already been thrashing energetically, and now it instantly escaped her grasp. Both the water and the fish flew straight toward Jiang Anran.
“?”
Jiang Anran failed to dodge in time.
The result was obvious.
The atmosphere fell silent for several seconds. A moment later, Zhan Yao’s mocking voice sounded from nearby.
“Pfft.”
“Instant karma, huh?”
Zhan Yao did not investigate whether Housekeeper Yang had done it deliberately.
Jiang Anran had only returned to the country today. To demonstrate how well she had lived over the years, she had dressed with extraordinary care and had even taken out a luxury couture outfit she had always been reluctant to wear.
She had never imagined she would arrive looking radiant and leave resembling a drowned rat.
Jiang Anran’s screams were so loud that they could probably be heard throughout the entire villa.
After she left, Zhan Yao ordered the servants to throw away everything she had touched. Only then did she return to the dining table and eat.
Her luck was probably terrible today. Every person she encountered had been increasingly bizarre. Zhan Yao was so irritated that she even ate less dinner than usual.
Afterward, she went into the kitchen and spent some time researching new recipes.
Without exception, every attempt ended in failure.
According to the servants assisting her at the time, Miss Zhan’s expression had become terrifyingly dark.
She quit!
Zhan Yao clicked her tongue, left behind a pile of chaotic wreckage, and strode away. The servants behind her breathed sighs of relief and only dared approach to clean after she had gone.
“It seems wasteful to throw it away. Why don’t we take some home? They were all high-quality ingredients,” Servant A suggested.
Servant B shook her head and sighed softly. “Better not. Didn’t you notice that A-Fang didn’t come in today? Greed for small gains can lead to terrible losses. Miss Zhan’s cooking isn’t something just anyone can survive.”
“Then what should we do? Why don’t we pick out a little and take it home to feed the puppies?” Servant A continued trying.
“Do you think I haven’t tried that before?” Servant B said. “It’s completely black and looks as if it’s been exposed to radiation. Forget eating it—the puppies won’t even look at it.”
“…”
After showering, Zhan Yao unlocked her phone and checked it.
Yu Wanqiao had sent her another message. Along with wishing her good night, she had asked:
【Did you have a pleasant day today, Yaoyao?】
Pleasant?
She was fortunate she was not still furious.
Zhan Yao was not the kind of person who kept her grievances bottled up. Jiang Anran might have been a fake white moonlight, but the photograph of her with Yu Wanqiao was real. She had barged into the house with nothing but that worthless picture as evidence. Her arrogance was simply unbearable.
If Zhan Yao did not complain to Yu Wanqiao now, would anyone be allowed to enter with some supposed token in the future?
She did not have enough energy to deal with all of them. After driving away one Jiang Anran, there might be a Li Anran, Zhao Anran, Wang Anran…
Her anger had come suddenly. Part of it was caused by all the bizarre people she had encountered today, while the rest was because of Yu Wanqiao.
The symposium being held over the past two days seemed rather important. Zhan Yao could find news posted by media accounts with a casual online search.
She had originally been somewhat worried about Yu Wanqiao’s condition and feared her old illness might flare up again, so she instinctively looked through a few more reports.
Then she came across a photograph.
It showed Yu Wanqiao dressed formally, looking composed and dignified. Most of the attendees were foreigners with blond hair and blue eyes and rather striking appearances, yet for some reason, Zhan Yao’s gaze fell solely on Yu Wanqiao.
The picture had only recently been posted. There was not much of a time difference between the two locations, so the meeting had probably ended and the reception afterward was now underway.
Chuansheng was renowned internationally. Those wishing to become acquainted with Yu Wanqiao had never been restricted by nationality or gender. In this photograph alone, quite a few people surrounded her.
She was probably speaking with someone. In the picture, Yu Wanqiao held a glass of red wine and wore a smile on her lips.
She looked rather happy.
Zhan Yao understood that she should not take her anger out on Yu Wanqiao, but for some reason, she still felt irritated.
After what happened with Jiang Anran today, someone else might imitate her another day. What if a foreigner eventually arrived at the villa holding this photograph? Zhan Yao would truly die of anger.
She briefly explained what had happened that day in a message to Yu Wanqiao and expressed her dissatisfaction very clearly.
Several seconds later, Yu Wanqiao quickly replied:
【Jiang Anran and I do know each other, but our relationship is limited to that. We have never had much contact.】
【What she did today clearly offended you, Yaoyao. I’ll handle it when I return.】
【It was my fault that you became angry. I’m sorry, Yaoyao.】
Unexpectedly, Yu Wanqiao’s attitude was excellent.
Half of Zhan Yao’s anger disappeared, but her words remained unforgiving.
【Aren’t you going to hear Miss Jiang’s side of the story?】
Yu Wanqiao: 【There’s no need.】
Yu Wanqiao: 【The offense is a fact. Whatever Jiang Anran was thinking is irrelevant.】
After reading the messages, Zhan Yao fully understood what Yu Wanqiao meant.
She had merely used a relatively elegant way to express a much simpler sentiment—
What the hell was Jiang Anran supposed to be?
In certain respects, Yu Wanqiao’s thoughts unexpectedly aligned perfectly with hers.
Zhan Yao felt immensely satisfied. The anger in her heart instantly vanished without a trace.
She yawned and contentedly typed:
【All right. Then I have nothing else to say. It’s getting late, so you should rest early, Wanqiao.】
This time, she was the one who wished her good night first.
【Good night. Sweet dreams.】
The night soon passed, and the next day arrived.
Zhan Yao had no classes that morning, so she naturally slept a little longer.
She even had a dream.
She dreamed that Yu Wanqiao discovered all the dishes she had made. Not only did the woman refuse to praise her, but she criticized everything as worthless without even tasting a single bite.
Zhan Yao became so furious she wanted to bite her to death. She slammed their marriage certificate onto the table.
“I can’t live like this anymore. Divorce!”
Then she woke up.
“…”
Zhan Yao sat up groggily and rubbed her temple, still unable to free herself from the dream.
Eventually, she reached a conclusion.
That woman had definitely not been Yu Wanqiao. It must have been Xu Yingxi after plastic surgery.
Zhan Yao sighed, got out of bed, and washed up.
As she went downstairs, the distinct aroma of bitter coffee drifted through the air.
Zhan Yao had a keen sense of smell and immediately recognized it as the kind Yu Wanqiao usually drank. No one else in the villa would touch it.
But Yu Wanqiao was currently abroad. How could she possibly teleport home just to brew herself coffee?
Remembering what had happened yesterday, Zhan Yao quickly reached a conclusion.
That lunatic Jiang Anran had probably come back again.
Excellent.
She did not mind devoting her entire morning to fighting Jiang Anran to the death.
With that thought, Zhan Yao casually tied up her long hair and went downstairs with a dark expression. Since it was so early, she might as well give the woman a proper greeting.
Until…
She saw the person sitting in the chair, quietly drinking coffee with her eyes lowered.
All the hostility surrounding Zhan Yao instantly vanished.
She stood there in confusion and instinctively rubbed her eyes. Her voice, still softened from sleep, sounded gentler and more delicate than usual, almost as though she were acting spoiled.
“Wanqiao, why are you back?”
“Didn’t you say you would be abroad for several days?” she asked, continuing forward. Even now, she still felt as though she might not have fully awakened. “Why did you…”
Before she could finish, Yu Wanqiao stood.
She glanced at the strands of hair on top of Zhan Yao’s head that had been mussed by the pillow, then raised a hand and gently smoothed them down.
Only afterward did she speak.
“Because I was worried about you, Yaoyao. I returned after handling the most urgent matters. I also brought you a few gifts. They’re all the latest releases from several brands and aren’t available in domestic boutiques yet.”
“Does that make you feel a little better?”
