Chapter 18
“…I’m fine,” Ji Xiangyu said hoarsely.
Her voice carried a trace of barely restrained discomfort, like an unsteady scale on the verge of tipping over.
“Let me see.”
As Shen Yishu spoke, she reached for the light switch beside the door, wanting to see Ji Xiangyu clearly.
“Don’t…”
Ji Xiangyu hurriedly reached for Shen Yishu’s wrist, but she was a little too late.
The instant the fluorescent light came on, it nearly blinded Shen Yishu.
In a single moment, the intimate atmosphere that had filled the darkness was completely swept away. The effect was comparable to Doctor Zhao suddenly throwing open the door and walking inside.
Slender fingers wrapped tightly around Shen Yishu’s wrist.
Because Ji Xiangyu was struggling to endure the discomfort, her grip was exceptionally firm.
Shen Yishu remembered the night she first transmigrated. Ji Xiangyu had gripped her wrist the same way then, as though grasping a piece of driftwood suspended above the water.
Ji Xiangyu raised her eyes toward her.
Her dark pupils shimmered with moisture, the corners of her eyes stained red. Her glistening gaze seemed on the verge of spilling tears.
Her thick lashes were slightly damp, blinking uncomfortably at the sudden brightness.
Her cheeks were flushed, her earlobes pink, and her gaze misty and unfocused.
She looked completely different from her usual calm and restrained self.
Shen Yishu stared blankly for two seconds.
She had always believed she was not someone who judged others by appearance.
Now, however, Ji Xiangyu’s beauty had shocked her into silence.
“Turn off the light.”
It was spoken like an order, but Ji Xiangyu’s soft, weak voice contained no intimidation at all.
Instead, it sounded faintly spoiled.
Ji Xiangyu tightened her grip slightly.
Only then did Shen Yishu return to her senses and switch off the light.
Could she have entered heat again?
Shen Yishu crouched before her and asked softly with a frown, “Did you bring suppressants?”
Using the faint light slipping into the room, Ji Xiangyu studied the blurred face before her and forcefully suppressed the dryness and itching in her throat.
“No.”
Even if she had brought them, they would have been useless.
As long as Shen Yishu remained beside her, even the strongest suppressants would lose their effect.
“Then what should we do?”
Shen Yishu began to worry.
It was possible to force oneself through a heat.
Generally, during the first two years after differentiation, the glands had not fully matured, and the desires driven by pheromones would not be too overwhelming.
However, once the glands matured, very few people could directly withstand the full impact of heat.
Forcing oneself to endure it was also harmful to the body, just as someone in severe pain still needed medication.
Ji Xiangyu stared at the Alpha crouching in front of her.
When standing, Shen Yishu was tall and slender. Yet crouched on the floor, she resembled a large dog.
Ji Xiangyu could not clearly see the concern on her face, but the worry in her voice was impossible to ignore.
“Are you very worried?”
“Mm.”
“How about giving me another temporary mark?”
Shen Yishu: “…”
Perhaps they should forget about that option.
She hesitated for a long time before offering a refusal.
“How about I go buy you two suppressant injections?”
Ji Xiangyu laughed when she heard this.
“We’re in a hospital.”
She truly regarded Shen Yishu somewhat differently now.
Repeated marking would deepen an Omega’s dependence on an Alpha. That was also why Ji Xiangyu had continued hesitating.
If Shen Yishu were truly an unforgivable person, Ji Xiangyu could never allow anything more to happen between them.
But if she was not…
“Oh, right. Should I call Doctor Zhao?”
Shen Yishu finally realized where they were. A thin layer of sweat had already formed on her back.
She was genuinely afraid that Ji Xiangyu might bite her again and force her to bite back.
“There’s no need. Take the instrument outside and wait for me. I’ll be fine after a few minutes.”
Ji Xiangyu understood her physical condition very well.
She could endure until they returned that night and inject a suppressant then.
“All right. Call me if you feel unwell.”
Shen Yishu stood worriedly, took the instrument, and headed outside.
Before closing the door, she met Ji Xiangyu’s gaze inside the room.
Ji Xiangyu curved her lips slightly, signaling for her to close it.
Shen Yishu shut the door.
When she turned around, she saw Doctor Zhao wearing an indescribable expression.
“…Anyone who didn’t know better would think the two of you had done something shameful inside that room.”
The more Doctor Zhao spoke, the more disgusted she appeared.
“You’re covered in so much pheromone scent that it’s suffocating.”
Shen Yishu smiled brightly.
“You must have seen this plenty of times, Doctor Zhao.”
Doctor Zhao removed the small square container holding the collected gas from the instrument and inserted it into another rectangular machine that stood half a person tall.
She tapped the screen twice, and the machine slowly began operating.
“I’ve seen it plenty. Young couples and newlyweds sometimes can’t restrain themselves. Wanting to take a bite is normal.”
Doctor Zhao was completely unsurprised.
“You didn’t bite her?”
Shen Yishu thought that she and Best Actress Ji were neither lovers nor wives.
How could they simply bite each other whenever they felt like it?
“No. It isn’t as though we were at home,” Shen Yishu replied.
“?”
Doctor Zhao abruptly turned toward her and studied her from head to toe again.
Behind her glasses, her eyes were filled with disbelief.
Shen Yishu: “?”
She had no idea what was wrong.
The machine had already begun analyzing the samples.
Two waveform lines appeared on the screen and intersected.
“The blue line is yours, while the red one belongs to Ji Xiangyu.”
Hearing the machine, Doctor Zhao turned and stared intently at the screen.
The two lines became increasingly intertwined. Their waveforms gradually approached the same shape as the large number beside them began rapidly climbing from sixty percent.
At that moment, Ji Xiangyu opened the door and emerged.
Her gaze happened to fall on the screen.
The red and blue waveforms intertwined completely, forming a single deep-purple line.
The number stopped at 99.9 percent.
Doctor Zhao was about to say it was unfortunate that they had failed to reach one hundred percent.
She had nearly witnessed history.
The machine beeped.
The number changed from 99.9 percent to 100 percent.
“Analysis complete.”
Doctor Zhao: “…”
Ji Xiangyu: “…”
Shen Yishu: “?”
Doctor Zhao first looked at Ji Xiangyu, whose flush had not yet completely faded, then at Shen Yishu’s bewildered expression.
She could not resist wanting to give Shen Yishu a thumbs-up.
A one-hundred-percent pheromone compatibility rate was so rare that even textbooks contained only a few examples.
Unfortunately, because of Ji Xiangyu’s special identity, the data would not be uploaded to the hospital database.
“You managed to restrain yourself even with one-hundred-percent compatibility. Little friend, I think you’ll succeed at anything you attempt in the future,” Doctor Zhao teased.
“But I didn’t feel anything,” Shen Yishu said.
She had not sensed any especially profound connection between herself and Ji Xiangyu.
“It appears Best Actress Sister’s charm has declined.”
Doctor Zhao printed the report and handed it to Ji Xiangyu.
“Doctor Zhao should spend more time thinking about how to coax your own partner,” Ji Xiangyu replied as she accepted the report.
“Now that you mention it, you still haven’t told me how I’m supposed to coax her!”
Doctor Zhao suddenly remembered something, and her brows immediately knitted together.
“I’m busy today. We’ll speak by phone another time.”
Ji Xiangyu grasped Shen Yishu’s wrist and led her toward the door.
“And ‘little friend’ isn’t something you should call her.”
Doctor Zhao: “…”
I hate couples in the passionate stage of their relationship!
The moment they stepped outside, Ji Xiangyu released Shen Yishu’s wrist and put her hat, sunglasses, and mask back on.
Doctor Zhao opened her office door and poked her head outside.
“Is your condition all right?”
Ji Xiangyu lowered her eyes.
“There’s no problem.”
Doctor Zhao gave an “Oh” and retreated into her office again.
The two took the elevator downstairs.
Just before leaving the elevator, Ji Xiangyu finally asked, “Inside the small room earlier, did you really not feel anything… unusual?”
Shen Yishu nodded.
“I did.”
Ji Xiangyu frowned.
“What did you feel?”
The image of Ji Xiangyu’s mist-covered eyes appeared in Shen Yishu’s mind.
Unable to stop herself, she replied, “I felt so overwhelmed by Sister’s beauty that I couldn’t speak.”
Ji Xiangyu: “…”
How cheesy.
Her mask concealed the upward curve of her lips.
