Chapter 2
At last, the group arrived at Wanniang’s home. After entering her small courtyard, they carried the soaking-wet Yang Lulong into her room and placed her on the bed.
“Thank you, everyone. I can take care of the rest from here,” Wanniang said gratefully.
“Her clothes are completely soaked. Why don’t I help her change?” the woman who had accompanied them offered.
“I can do it myself. You still need to help Sister-in-law Zhang, so I won’t keep you.”
“She may be a woman, but she’s still a Qianyuan…” the man said helplessly, only to be interrupted by Wanniang.
“It’s all right, Brother Zhang. She’s unconscious and probably won’t wake up anytime soon. Didn’t I also treat you when you were injured last time?”
“That was only my shoulder, and I’m a Zhongyong. This woman is a Qianyuan,” Brother Zhang replied helplessly.
“By the way, Brother Zhang, don’t you still have to hurry and deliver your goods?” the woman beside him reminded him.
“Ah! This is bad!”
Only after being reminded did Brother Zhang remember that he had left his firewood beside the road earlier. He needed to retrieve it quickly, or someone might take it. He had spent the entire morning chopping that firewood, and his newly purchased woodcutting saber was still buried in the pile.
Upon remembering this, he hurriedly bid farewell to Wanniang and the others before rushing off to retrieve the firewood he had left beside the road.
“Are you sure you don’t need my help? I can explain everything to Sister-in-law Zhang later. A little delay won’t matter.”
“There’s no need. You’ve already gone through enough trouble helping me bring her here.”
“Well… if that’s the case, I’ll go take care of my work first. I’ll come back and see you once I’m finished.”
“Thank you.”
After seeing the woman off, Wanniang returned inside and approached the bed.
She sat on its edge and lowered her gaze to examine Yang Lulong. The woman had delicate features and a thin, slightly pale face. Her willow-shaped brows were drawn tightly together.
Wanniang then studied her figure, estimating what size of clothing she would need. Yang Lulong appeared to be only a few inches taller than her, so her own clothes should fit well enough.
She stood and went to fetch some clean clothes.
Still pretending to be unconscious, Yang Lulong suddenly had a bad feeling. Her anxiety steadily intensified.
A cool sensation swept over her, leaving her chest exposed to the chilly air.
Her clothes had been stripped off.
Yang Lulong’s entire body instantly tensed. This was the first time in her life that someone had seen her completely naked. She felt both terrified and unbearably embarrassed, making her even more afraid to move. She held her breath altogether.
Wanniang used a cloth to wipe the water from Yang Lulong’s body before dressing her in dry clothes. She did not feel particularly embarrassed, treating the entire matter simply as part of saving someone’s life.
After drying Yang Lulong’s hair, she replaced the damp bedding with a dry set and tucked the blankets securely around her. Everything was done in a calm and orderly manner.
Although Yang Lulong had initially been frightened and embarrassed, an inexplicable ache gradually welled up inside her.
It had been a very long time since anyone had cared for her so gently.
She absolutely had to find a proper way to thank this woman.
Just as she was wondering how she should express her gratitude to Wanniang, a warm hand rested against her forehead. Once again, that comforting jasmine fragrance surrounded her.
Yang Lulong had never realized before that the scent of jasmine could make someone feel so peaceful and warm.
As the fragrance gradually faded into the distance, Yang Lulong opened her eyes. Once again, all she saw was that white figure moving away.
She raised a hand to her forehead, hoping to recapture the warmth she had just felt, but that same tenderness could not be recreated.
Slightly disappointed, she lowered her hand and began observing her surroundings.
She had assumed she was lying in a clinic’s hospital bed, yet this was a wooden canopy bed surrounded by curtains. The room looked nothing like a clinic. Instead, it resembled one of those old houses found deep in the countryside, with only the simplest furnishings.
When she looked overhead, she discovered that there was not even an electric light. Nothing about this place had any connection to modern life.
She glanced down and found that her clothes had been changed. After being submerged in the river for so long, her phone was most likely ruined.
“Ugh…”
Just thinking about all the trouble awaiting her made her head ache.
“You’re awake.”
A voice interrupted her thoughts.
Yang Lulong hurriedly turned toward it.
A young woman dressed in ancient clothing entered her sight. Her ink-black hair fell all the way to her lower back, and her makeup-free face was delicate and beautiful. The outer corners of her eyes curved slightly downward, giving her an exceptionally gentle appearance. A warm smile rested on her lips, while she carried a porcelain bowl in her hands.
Yang Lulong opened her mouth but had no idea what to say.
As she stared at the woman’s clothes and considered the furnishings inside the room, an utterly absurd possibility arose in her mind.
Could she… have transmigrated?
