Chapter 38.1
In the hospital corridor, Zhao Xin supported Luo Yan as they walked out, her heart heavy. Earlier, in her emotional state, she hadn’t noticed much, but standing next to Luo Yan now, she felt an immensely intimidating pheromone pressure field. Although she couldn’t smell pheromones well, at such close proximity… the pressure field was unmistakable, making every step feel like an uphill battle.
But Zhao Xin did not give up on Luo Yan and continued to support her until they got outside. By then, Wei Ying had rushed over, summoned by Zhao Xin. Zhao Xin was truly terrified that something might happen to her boss and felt she had no choice but to call Wei Ying.
“What’s wrong? Luo San, you…” Wei Ying was completely stunned looking at the Alpha before her. “You really are…”
She couldn’t ask any more questions and immediately sent her to the isolation room. Hearing Wei Ying’s voice, Luo Yan finally seemed to snap back to reality and grabbed her arm. “Help me get a shot of suppressant. I need to go back to school.”
“…Back to school? Do you want to die?” As a fellow Alpha standing beside her, Wei Ying felt an extremely severe pressure and could barely control the instinct to attack her, let alone what other Alphas would feel. Moreover, she was injured and still wanted to go back? Impossible.
Seeing that she refused to help, Luo Yan moved to find a doctor herself. Wei Ying watched her, truly defeated, and muttered: “I should have known before that you were this stubborn.”
Hearing this teasing remark, Luo Yan actually found the spirit to laugh: “Isn’t that a common trait among Alphas?”
“…I’m not as reckless as you.”
“Don’t worry, I cherish my life quite a bit.”
Wei Ying remained non-committal at this statement and stepped outside first.
Once outside, she first asked Zhao Xin, who was still waiting: “What happened to your boss?”
“…She had a major conflict with that Miss Xue.”
Wei Ying frowned: “Luo Yan has such a good temper, yet she’s been pushed to this state…”
True… Zhao Xin felt the same; she couldn’t even “ship” them anymore. It was just too difficult.
“And how did she get those injuries on her body?”
“She was stabbed by an Omega named Cai Xinrou, and just now someone named Hao Ya seemingly tried to attack her as well; she should have been caught.” Zhao Xin hadn’t had time to learn the specific details yet.
“Stabbed twice?!” Wei Ying felt something was wrong as soon as she heard that. “No, I need to go in and check on her condition.”
Normally, the higher an Alpha’s rank, the harder they are to injure, especially in sudden situations where their pheromones automatically deploy a defense when attacked. But now… it made her worry. She even suspected if the weapon used to stab her was equipped with some high-tech feature.
Inside the isolation room, Luo Yan was having her wounds bandaged by a doctor. Her pheromones actually subsided within a few short minutes, which was truly an eye-opener. Just how much suppressant had been administered?
“Can you see my hand clearly now?” Wei Ying stood before her, waving her hand and asking.
“…Yes,” Luo Yan replied irritably.
“I was just afraid you’d gone permanently blind.”
“…Wei Da, if you don’t speak, no one will think you’re mute.”
“Hahahaha, alright, alright.”
Wei Ying stopped talking. Her original intent was just to confirm her condition. Seeing that she seemed quite alright—though she suspected she was putting on a front—she didn’t say more and focused on watching the doctor bandage the wounds.
The wounds were not very optimistic; they weren’t actually very deep, but they looked severe because she had been injured repeatedly.
The doctor looked at her wounds and used several instruments to test them. When the results came out, the doctor frowned: “The dagger used by the other party is quite surprising.”
“How so?” Wei Ying couldn’t help but ask.
“…It likely contains a pheromone interferent. If it wasn’t for that, it wouldn’t have been able to harm the victim at all.”
“Pheromone interferent?” It wasn’t the first time Wei Ying had heard the term, but she found it strange: “Wasn’t that stuff banned? Why is it still around?”
“So there must have been a leak somewhere…”
The doctor was also troubled. She finished bandaging Luo Yan’s wounds and went outside to speak with Wei Ying.
Recalling the details Luo Yan had previously told her, the doctor said: “Actually, you saw Miss Luo’s wounds just now. They aren’t deep, but they tear and bleed easily because she cannot get agitated or use too many pheromones; otherwise, she will still be affected by the pheromone interferent.”
“I see…”
The first time Luo Yan went to catch Cai Xinrou, she was too anxious. This Cai Xinrou had appeared very suddenly and in a very clever spot—at a specific angle where one would see her as soon as they looked up. Since the audience was far away, she truly looked like Xue Wu, which made her subsequent actions much easier.
She had definitely lured Luo Yan to discover her, but she didn’t expect Luo Yan to be so swift and decisive, catching her immediately and disrupting her plan.
Because of this, Cai Xinrou grew desperate and stabbed Luo Yan with the dagger coated in pheromone interferent, causing the injury to her abdomen.
However, Luo Yan’s reactions were very fast; she had reached out to block it, resulting in a slight injury to her abdomen and her finger.
Initially, it should have healed quickly, but she cannot use her pheromones; every time she does, it delays healing and causes the abdominal wound to tear, resulting in repeated injury.
“…And honestly, this seems a bit different from a standard pheromone interferent,” the doctor said, finding it very strange. “It’s not right… really not right… standard interferents only interfere for a brief moment, but this one has a lingering effect… it’s more like something designed for punishment…”
She spoke with lingering worry: “I need to go check the condition of that dagger…”
She was about to leave, but Wei Ying stopped her: “Is Luo Yan’s condition okay now?”
“She received one shot of suppressant. She can’t take too many. I told her she can only have one; if her pheromones don’t drop within five minutes, she has to stay here. Furthermore, she must return for hospitalization later.”
To be honest, Luo Yan’s condition earlier had everyone in the hospital on edge. They even had an anesthetic gun ready; if she truly lost control, they would have had to shoot her.
But at the critical moment, she managed to suppress it. This little Alpha’s willpower was truly extraordinary and not to be underestimated.
Hearing this, Wei Ying felt that Luo Yan was a tough individual on one hand, and on the other, she felt she was indeed different from the Luo Yan she used to know. Her feelings became a bit more complex.
While they were talking, Luo Yan emerged from the isolation room. She had already changed into a new set of clothes, and the cold sternness on her face was completely hidden, showing no sign of the earlier anomaly.
This level of self-restraint made Wei Ying marvel; she admitted she could never achieve that if she were in her place.
Walking side-by-side with her, Wei Ying was still a bit worried, even though she could no longer smell her pheromones: “Are you really okay?”
“Save your worry.”
“Heh,” Wei Ying said non-committally. “Why are you so insistent on going to school?”
“Reasons.”
…Reasons? Many reasons or what? Stop leaving sentences half-finished!
In the car, Luo Yan closed her eyes to rest.
Seeing that Wei Ying hadn’t left, knowing she was worried about her, Luo Yan said: “If you have things to do, you can leave first.” She knew Wei Ying wasn’t like her; she had plenty of work to do and was under a lot of pressure.
Since she was fine now, there was no need for her to stay and accompany her. Besides, her appearance later might easily cause a misunderstanding.
“Luo San, although I know asking some things now is ill-timed…”
“Then don’t ask.”
“…You really are something, Luo San!” Wei Ying was practically laughed at by her attitude.
“I don’t know right now, and I don’t want to think about matters related to her.” Luo Yan did not open her eyes; she just tilted her head back quietly, her profile lost in the shadows, her emotions unreadable.
A silent sadness and oppression filled the car. Wei Ying rubbed her fingertips and finally said helplessly: “To be honest, I think dating is a huge hassle. In high school, I had a crush on a male Omega, but I have no patience and gave up quickly.”
“But you are different, Luo Yan.” She had practically witnessed the journey from her crush on Xue Wu to their relationship now. In the past, just mentioning Xue Wu’s name would fill her with pride and glory, as if she were the one who had won an award and earned everyone’s love. There was no telling how many pieces of Xue Wu’s merchandise were piled up in her room.
…But perhaps it is precisely because of such an etched, deep love that she was hurt so badly.
As a bystander, she felt conflicted about this relationship, but what could be done? No one could help.
They could only take it one step at a time.
Ultimately, Wei Ying did not go back to school with her and they parted at the school gate.
By this moment, Luo Yan had completely brought the ferocity and loss of control from half an hour ago under command. She had turned back into the Alpha who seemingly wore all her emotions on her sleeve.
Only Wei Ying knew that something was different.
“Call me if anything happens. Don’t try to tough it out alone,” Wei Ying told her before leaving.
“Thanks, Wei Da,” Luo Yan nodded and even gave her a smile. “Later, I’ll design a unique ‘Best Childhood Friend’ award for you and issue you a silk banner.”
“Ssh—Stop, stop! Don’t be so tacky!”
Luo Yan felt refreshed seeing her look of disgust and shivers; she couldn’t help but laugh, blowing away some of the heaviness and oppression in her heart.
But at the same time, she seemed to remember something and said to her solemnly: “Wei Da, guard your family fortune. Don’t let your emotions cloud your judgment.”
“…Is this some new type of curse?”
“I’m being serious.” Luo Yan’s expression was very grave.
“Alright, alright, I’ve got it.” This time, Wei Ying truly took her words to heart. Only then did Luo Yan feel a bit more at ease, though she knew she might not be able to change the plot’s momentum.
Luo Yan then returned to school with a heart full of feigned passion and joy; only she knew how much of it was an act.
However, to Zhao Xin, she looked fine, at least having returned to normal. The Second Miss… she truly had to re-evaluate her.
Zhao Xin felt only gratitude and respect for Luo Yan, similar to… treating her as a good friend. Luo Yan had never looked down on her for being a Beta; she had saved her during her most difficult time and given her a job. So no matter what outsiders said about Luo Yan, Zhao Xin only felt gratitude.
And now… this version of the Second Miss… she actually didn’t like it. It was too repressed. If she didn’t want to smile, she didn’t have to.
“Zhao Xin, what are you thinking about?” Luo Yan saw her staring blankly and joked: “Do I have gold on my face?”
“…Second Miss, if you are unhappy, you don’t have to smile.” Having just gone through such an ordeal, how could she calm down in minutes? This was too much repression; it might even be bad for her health.
“Zhao Xin, this world doesn’t give you many opportunities to be headstrong, neither for me nor for you.” Luo Yan squinted at the sky. “Actually, things are quite good now. At least I can feel the warmth of the sun, the freshness of the air, and—the concern and love from so many people.”
She should cherish it.
“Let’s go.” She didn’t say more and stepped forward.
Zhao Xin followed her, feeling that this version of the Second Miss was even more worrying than before.
