Chapter 45

Lu Yan’s cheeks flushed slightly. “Just a hug is fine.”

“Alright.” Shen Su smiled and gave Lu Yan an open, straightforward hug.

The embrace was brief; Lu Yan felt a sense of longing for more, but she told herself she should be content.

Shen Su discovered that she had been dreaming frequently lately. Moreover, most of these dreams were far from pleasant.

On Sunday morning at six o’clock, Shen Su sat on her bed with a glazed expression. She couldn’t resist calling out to the System so early in the morning.

System: So sleepy, dear… what’s wrong?

Shen Su: Is there something “unclean” about this apartment? Why do I have nightmares the moment I come here?

System: What kind of nightmares, dear?

Shen Su: It felt like I ended up in jail—a real “tears behind bars” performance. The second half of the dream seemed to be in a psychiatric hospital; I even saw fellow patients. Anyway, it was quite painful.

Speaking of which, it felt like “revenge spending.” In the last world, she had ignored the option of calling the police, which led to some irreversible consequences. In this world, she had already dealt with the police three times—counting the dream, that made four.

System: Wait a moment, dear. System updates can sometimes have bugs; let me check.

Shen Su: How long do I have to wait?

System: Two minutes.

Shen Su stared at the clock on the wall and called the System again after exactly two minutes.

System: I have one piece of good news and one piece of bad news. Which one do you want to hear first?

Shen Su rubbed her temples. The good news, I guess.

System: Good news: the bug was found and fixed.

Shen Su: And the bad news?

System: Bad news: because it was discovered a bit late, it seems something from the previous world has slipped through into this one.

Shen Su: ??? Explain yourself. What is it? Is it alive or dead?!

System: Currently investigating! Please be patient, dear!

Shen Su took a deep breath. It’s not Lu Yan, is it?

System: No.

Shen Su: Then that’s fine.

System: But, if the Love-Struck Miss comes into contact with this “thing,” she might awaken some memories.

Shen Su: !!!

Shen Su immediately got out of bed and pulled back the curtains. Sunlight illuminated the entire room. She paused for a moment and then asked, Will I be affected?

System: It won’t affect you. If you have less contact with Sheng Suyu, it might be better.

Shen Su raised her hand, propping up her chin as she looked out the window. Right. My dreams might be from the perspective of the previous life’s Sheng Suyu.

So, Sheng Suyu’s final destination in the previous life was a psychiatric hospital? Meaning, Sheng Suyu was mentally ill?

Having reached this conclusion, Shen Su lay back down quite peacefully. Since Sheng Suyu was destined for the mental ward sooner or later, there was no need to worry about her!

System: Are you forgetting something?

Shen Su stared at the ceiling lights, and a flash of insight hit her. Mentally ill patients are not held criminally responsible for murder while they are suffering from their illness.

In the previous life, Lu Yan’s death was inextricably linked to Sheng Suyu. To help Sheng Suyu escape punishment, the Sheng family used their various connections to have her committed to a mental hospital until the heat died down, then they’d let her out.

How troublesome!

Just then, a knock sounded at the door.

Shen Su rubbed her temples, got out of bed again, and opened the door to find exactly who she expected—Lu Yan.

Lu Yan’s complexion was much better than Shen Su’s. She looked radiant, her eyes brimming with smiles. “Sugar, good morning.”

“Morning.” Shen Su let out a yawn. “What delicious thing did you make this time?” She thought she smelled something fragrant.

Lu Yan looked toward the dining room and said slowly, “Since it’s Sunday and neither of us has to work, there was plenty of time. So, I made seafood and pork rib porridge. It’s not quite done yet, but Sugar can have some Pan-Fried Buns first.”

“Hmm? You can make Pan-Fried Buns too? Amazing!” Shen Su walked over to the dining room and took a look. The plate was filled with buns, exquisitely garnished with chopped green onions. “They look just like the ones from that shop.”

Lu Yan’s eyebrows curved, and she gave a somewhat shy smile. “Actually, I know the owner of that shop. I learned it from her.”

“Oh? Then why did your Little Green Book post say ‘Unexpectedly delicious’? If you know them, shouldn’t the deliciousness be expected?” Shen Su took two pairs of chopsticks, handed one to Lu Yan, and sat down. She took a bite of a bun; the taste was indeed very similar to the shop’s.

Lu Yan poured some vinegar into a saucer, brought it to the table, and sat opposite Shen Su. She said slowly, “I… I became an orphan after I turned six. I lived in an orphanage after that, and the owner of that shop often came to visit me there.”

A flash of surprise crossed Shen Su’s eyes. Although she knew Lu Yan’s background, she hadn’t expected Lu Yan to be so direct about it.

Lu Yan dipped a bun in the vinegar. After finishing one, she continued, “I go back once every year to see the director and the children. Sometimes I bring books or clothes. That shop’s business wasn’t great before because of the location, so I thought about helping them with marketing. I didn’t expect it to actually work.”

“I see,” Shen Su nodded thoughtfully.

Lu Yan continued eating her buns, but her mind was filled with the dream from last night. In the dream, they were also sitting at the dining table eating, and then she had taken the initiative to sit on Shen Su’s lap to seduce her.

In real life, that was something she would never dare to do.

Even if it was just a dream, it was enough for Lu Yan to savor for a long time. She lowered her eyelashes, her gaze landing on a spot on the table. If the table were transparent, she would be able to see the perfect shape of Shen Su’s legs.

“The seafood porridge will be ready in about ten minutes. I have something to take care of, so I should head out first?” Lu Yan blinked and said tentatively.

“I’ll drive you?” Shen Su put down her chopsticks and elegantly took a tissue to wipe her mouth.

To her surprise, Lu Yan politely declined. “No need to trouble you, I’ll head back on my own. The porridge will be ready in ten minutes, don’t forget it.”

“Okay, be safe on the road.” Shen Su’s eyes flickered. Was Lu Yan going to meet someone?

After leaving the apartment, Lu Yan followed the address in her messages to a cafe she had never visited before.

The person she was meeting was already waiting in a corner. Xu Ming was pretending to read a poster while sipping coffee, looking down at her book. The sunlight falling on her shoulders made her look as elegant as a beauty in a painting.

As a trained Omega, Xu Ming knew exactly which poses made her look the best. Unfortunately, Shen Su hadn’t followed.

Xu Ming looked up, making no effort to hide her disappointment. “I thought Sister Shen would come with you…”

Lu Yan didn’t wait for an invitation and sat down. She asked, “Is there something you wanted to see me for, Miss Xu?”

Xu Ming took out a card and tossed it onto the table. “Leave the capital. This money is more than you could earn in a lifetime; it’s enough for you to live in any other city.”

Lu Yan raised an eyebrow. She suddenly felt she had overestimated this Omega. She said leisurely, “You are so naive…”

Earlier, Shen Su had apologized for using her as a “target” in front of Xu Ming. Now that Xu Ming was provoking her like this, Lu Yan didn’t mind playing the role of the target to the end. She picked up the card, weighed it in her hand, and tossed it back. “I’ve seen this routine before.”

Back when she was “together” with Sheng Suyu, Sheng Suyu’s mother had already thrown a check at her.

Lu Yan tapped her knuckles on the table, her eyebrows arching slightly. “And by what right do you throw [Read on BaiLianTales]this card? What if Shen Su insists on pursuing me after we break up? Aren’t you afraid of losing both your money and the person?”

Xu Ming was left speechless by Lu Yan’s words. She looked at the card on the table, bit her lip, and after a long silence, said, “Sister Shen doesn’t like people approaching her with an ulterior motive.”

Lu Yan leaned back against the sofa. “Then aren’t you underestimating her? If she can tell when others have motives, wouldn’t she be able to tell with me? After all, I’m just a C-rank Omega from a small town…”

Xu Ming studied Lu Yan. “You seem different than before.” On that day, Lu Yan had seemed so small and self-conscious, like an ant on the side of the road.

Lu Yan smiled. “By the sound of it, I’ve become better?” After spending so much time with Shen Su, she naturally had to hold her head high and be more confident.

Xu Ming reluctantly took back the card and muttered to herself, “Forget it. Even if they don’t care about background, your compatibility with Shen Su might not pass. Why should I be the villain now?”

Lu Yan offered a polite, indifferent smile. “Take care. I won’t see you out.”

Once Xu Ming left the cafe, Lu Yan sent a message to Shen Su. 【I solved a little trouble for Sugar!】

Shen Su was currently sitting in her car, parked right outside the cafe. She watched the dejected Xu Ming walk out, curled her lips, and looked down to reply. 【Amazing.】

After dealing with the love rival, Lu Yan left the cafe. She walked to the nearest bus stop and took the bus back to her rental room. Neither Lu Yan nor Xu Ming noticed Shen Su in the car, likely because she was driving a new vehicle.

Unexpectedly, Shen Su had just gone to a pharmacy to buy some scent blockers. As she opened her car door, she ran into Sheng Suyu.

“Ooh, a new car?” Sheng Suyu said casually, reaching out a hand.

Shen Su brushed her hand away and said dryly, “Young President Sheng surely doesn’t want to throw away a hundred thousand dollars just like that?”

Sheng Suyu gritted her teeth. “Don’t call me ‘President’ or whatever. It’s the weekend, don’t mention work.”

“Aside from work, is there anything else for us to talk about?” Shen Su gave Sheng Suyu a flat look. “Please move aside.”

“Don’t you want to talk about Lu Yan? Don’t you want to know how she used to be my licking dog?” Sheng Suyu sounded almost proud.

Shen Su sat in the driver’s seat as if she didn’t exist, then turned to look at Sheng Suyu and spat [unauthorized copy]out one word expressionlessly: “Roll (Get lost).”

Then she drove her new car away, leaving Sheng Suyu in the dust.

Shen Su drove home. Her parents happened to be out, so she took the hair strand she had left there. Why didn’t she use a fresh strand from Lu Yan? Because she hadn’t expected to meet so frequently, and besides, the hair strand couldn’t just stay at the house; she might as well put it to use.

Shen Su pulled out one of her own hairs, put it in another sealed bag, and took both bags to the hospital to check their compatibility.

Pheromones are determined by genes, so checking compatibility only requires something with the host’s DNA. However, using pheromone extract directly would be more accurate, but that would be quite painful. Plus, having experienced the pain of gland removal, Shen Su was now very sensitive about her gland.

She waited at the hospital for an hour and finally received the test report.
