Chapter 47
Shen Father reminded her, “You’d better not get involved. The visible heir of the Sheng family looks like a fool, but her uncle is not simple. I’ve dealt with him before; he’s extremely calculating.”
Shen Su nodded. Recalling the Sheng Ze from her dream, she agreed that this man was indeed formidable.
“By the way, Susu, have you caught your sweetheart yet?” Shen Mother asked.
“Not yet…” Shen Su hadn’t decided how to fake her death in this world yet, or whether she should actually date Lu Yan again. Moreover, so many strange things had happened lately that her brain felt a bit sluggish. She only hoped the System could fix the bugs soon; otherwise, her heart would remain suspended in anxiety.
Shen Father frowned and asked, “Have you done that compatibility test?”
“I have. It’s 70%,” Shen Su said calmly, not looking like she was lying in the slightest.
Shen Father gave a hum of approval and didn’t pry further. The compatibility issue was successfully bluffed over.
By the weekend, Shen Su’s busy week finally came to an end. She spent an entire day lying in bed at home just to recover. It wasn’t until evening that she contacted Lu Yan.
【Are you free tomorrow?】
Shen Su sat at her computer desk, propping her chin on one hand, waiting for Lu Yan’s reply. Before she got a response, her new assistant sent her a message.
“Young President Shen, I’ve found the information on the person you asked me to investigate. I’ve sent it to your email.”
Shen Su raised an eyebrow. It was the weekend, and she hadn’t set a deadline; was Assistant Zheng really this dedicated? It made her feel quite pressured.
The next second, Zheng Ye explained: “I actually tried to send it yesterday, but for some reason, the transmission failed, so I sent it again tonight.”
Shen Su thought for a moment and replied: “Good work. This will be counted as overtime pay.”
Zheng Ye, who had expected a reprimand, felt her eyes light up. Her smile was brilliant as she replied: “Thank you, Young President Shen!”
Shen Su opened her inbox and clicked on the email from Zheng Ye. The data was incredibly detailed; almost everything that could be found publicly was there, and the layout was very easy to read.
Combined with her father’s comments and the blurry memories from her dream, Shen Su now had a clearer impression of “Sheng Ze.” Looking at this data, she felt that if Sheng Suyu didn’t pull herself together and stopped obsessing over “substitute literature,” her position would likely be stolen by Sheng Ze.
Sheng Ze was an absolute “Workaholic” (Juan Wang). His resume was impeccable. Compared to a half-baked effort like Sheng Suyu, the Sheng family shareholders would undoubtedly favor Sheng Ze. However, out of respect for Sheng Suyu’s father, they hadn’t shown it yet. In her dream, Sheng Ze only bared his fangs after Sheng Suyu’s parents died. She just didn’t know the exact timeline yet.
While Shen Su was lost in thought, Lu Yan had already sent several messages, but Shen Su hadn’t seen them because she was focused on how to deal with the ticking time bomb that was Sheng Suyu. It wasn’t until her phone vibrated with an incoming video call that she hurriedly closed her laptop and answered.
Lu Yan looked aggrieved on the screen. “Sugar, why did it take you so long to pick up? You didn’t reply to my messages, I was so worried…”
Shen Su explained gently, “I was checking my email just now and missed your messages. I’m sorry.”
“So, where are we going to play tomorrow?” Lu Yan asked with an expectant face.
“How about the amusement park? I heard a new one just opened.” Shen Su showed Lu Yan two tickets.
“Yes, yes!” Lu Yan nodded with a smile.
Shen Su added specifically, “I snatched these tickets online myself; they weren’t a gift. There definitely won’t be a repeat of what happened at the art exhibition.”
Lu Yan paused, her eyes shifting. “I almost forgot about that. It’s okay.”
“Then… see you tomorrow?”
“See you tomorrow.”
The next day, Shen Su parked her car nearby and headed straight to Lu Yan’s rental room. Just as she climbed to the fourth floor, Lu Yan was closing her door.
“What a coincidence.” Shen Su smiled and waved. Both of them were wearing green-toned dresses today.
“I was just about to message you when you arrived. We really do have a mutual understanding.” Lu Yan put her keys into her cream-colored bag and slung it across her shoulder.
Shen Su’s eyes flickered as she gave an “mm.” “Let’s go.”
She reached out her hand, and Lu Yan naturally linked arms with her. They looked like ordinary best friends going on an outing, though in reality, both “had their own designs.”
When they ran into Sheng Suyu inside the amusement park, Shen Su thought: What a small world. Perhaps she should find a temple to pray for the removal of such bad luck. Sheng Suyu wasn’t accompanied by her “White Moonlight”; standing alone in an amusement park looked eerie no matter how you sliced it.
The moment Sheng Suyu saw Lu Yan, her eyes lit up. “Yan Yan, I didn’t expect you to really be here! I just came to try my luck, I didn’t think I’d actually run into you…”
Shen Su raised an eyebrow. Really? She didn’t believe in such coincidences. The last time a “coincidence” like this happened in the previous world, it was Liang Qiao stalking Lu Yan.
System: Host, she didn’t stalk you this time. Her GPS coordinates have been here since early morning.
“Why are you here?” Lu Yan was the first to ask.
“I heard a new park opened here. I remembered you mentioned wanting to come to an amusement park before, so I came to try my luck.” Sheng Suyu glanced at their linked arms, a flash of jealousy in her eyes, but she quickly forced a smile. “Yan Yan, I’m sorry about before. I don’t expect your forgiveness, but can you give me a chance to make it up to you? I only recently realized my true feelings. I’ve made things clear with Song Xingran. So, do we still have a chance?”
Shen Su: ???
Shen Su tilted her head, looking at Sheng Suyu with confusion. Why was Sheng Suyu suddenly so bold? She used to act like a mouse seeing a cat in front of her, but now she was trying to “dig up the corner of the wall” right to her face, treating her like she was invisible?
System: Host, the map shows that Sheng Ze has returned to the country and is currently at the Sheng residence.
So, Sheng Ze is still wearing the mask of a “good uncle,” and Sheng Suyu is “borrowing the tiger’s prestige” because of their good relationship?
Suddenly, Lu Yan stepped forward, blocking Shen Su’s view. Shen Su stood blankly behind her, hearing Lu Yan say word for word: “If you ever had a shred of sincerity toward me, stop pestering me. Otherwise, it will be humiliating for both of us.”
“Yan Yan, I will prove my determination.” After saying that, Sheng Suyu gave Shen Su a deep look and turned to leave.
Once she was gone, Shen Su asked, “Has she been pestering you like this lately?”
“During the days you were away, she had someone send me flowers without a note. On the first day, I thought they were from you, so I accepted them.” Lu Yan paused, looking annoyed. “Then she probably saw that I took them, so she sent them for several days straight. Yesterday, she even squatted outside my door in the middle of the night—she gave me quite a scare.”
Shen Su understood. Sheng Suyu had entered the “creepy pursuit” phase of a redemption arc, but unfortunately, Lu Yan’s heart appeared completely unruffled. Shen Su figured she needed to let Sheng Suyu “accidentally” find out about the substitute situation to kill her interest in Lu Yan, preventing her from swooping in after her own “death exit.” After all, this version of Sheng Suyu wouldn’t be able to pull off a kidney transplant scheme, nor would she likely end up in a mental hospital yet. She had to take precautions.
“Wait.” Shen Su suddenly noticed a detail. “Sheng Suyu knows where you live?”
Lu Yan nodded. “She knows…”
“My intuition tells me that’s not safe,” Shen Su said.
Lu Yan hesitated. “It shouldn’t be a big deal, right? Besides, my lease isn’t up yet…” With her current salary, she could live in a better place, but she was used to this rental room—it was convenient for transport and close to the subway. If she were living alone without interference, it would be no problem at all.
Shen Su couldn’t make the decision for her, so she only nodded. “Maybe buy a camera for the door, just in case. Resettlement housing has a lot of foot traffic; anyone can enter the community.”
Lu Yan hummed. “I’ll be careful.”
“Let’s go. Forget Sheng Suyu; we’re here to have fun today.” Shen Su gently squeezed Lu Yan’s wrist. “What do you want to do first?”
“Let’s do the ones with fewer people? That way we can save time for more rides.” Lu Yan had specifically looked up a guide before coming.
They looked around; the place was packed. Since it had just opened, there were lines for almost everything.
“How about the carousel? The line is a bit shorter there,” Lu Yan said expectantly. Compared to the screams coming from the roller coaster and the drop tower, the carousel looked very cozy.
“Okay,” Shen Su agreed with a smile.
The line moved slowly. After five minutes, a sweet-looking young Omega college student greeted Shen Su: “Can I have your contact info?”
Shen Su squeezed Lu Yan’s palm. Lu Yan took the hint and smiled at the Omega. “Sorry, she has a girlfriend.”
“I’m so sorry, I didn’t know you were a couple. My apologies!” The Omega blushed, grabbed her friend who was watching the drama, and ran off.
Lu Yan turned to Shen Su and blinked. “I… didn’t misinterpret that, did I?”
“No. Our ‘mutual understanding’ has reached a new level,” Shen Su said with a laugh, then took Lu Yan’s wrist. “Maybe because we were standing a bit apart just now, that girl thought we didn’t know each other.”
“Then I’ll stand a bit closer…” Lu Yan moved toward Shen Su, looking up into those beautiful peach blossom eyes.
In an instant, the air warmed up, and an ambiguous atmosphere began to spread. Lu Yan stood on her tiptoes, just about to say something, when the staff nearby shouted: “Next twelve people!”
Unluckily, they were separated by the number; the people behind them were a family.
“You can sit together on one horse if you want,” the staff member said, assuming they were a couple. “If you’re coming in, go now, otherwise wait for the next turn.”
Lu Yan laughed. “Let’s go in then.”
So, they sat one after the other on a single carousel horse. Because Shen Su entered first, she sat in the front. Lu Yan had nothing to hold onto, so she had to wrap her arms around Shen Su’s waist.
Lu Yan stared at the back of Shen Su’s neck, sniffing gently, but she only smelled the faint fragrance of her clothes. Since Shen Su was wearing a blocker and wasn’t in her rut, it was normal that she couldn’t smell anything. But she was still a bit disappointed and instinctively rested her head on Shen Su’s shoulder.
When she first met Shen Su, she had smelled her pheromones—it was red wine, very pleasant. She hadn’t smelled it in years.
“You must have been to an amusement park like this before, right?” Lu Yan asked softly.
Shen Su hummed. “I have.” In this world’s memories, she had come with her parents.
Lu Yan nuzzled Shen Su’s neck, seemingly unconsciously. “This is my first time. I want to try every single ride.”
“It’s okay if we don’t finish them all today; we can come back again later.” Shen Su looked down at Lu Yan’s hands around her waist and let out an imperceptible sigh.
“Then that’ll probably be next week…” Just as she spoke, the carousel ride ended.
Lu Yan linked arms with Shen Su and left through the exit. Next, they went on the more thrilling Pirate Ship. When they came out, both had slightly messy hair, so they stopped to help each other tidy up.
A young female Beta pushing a flower cart passed by. Her eyes lit up as she picked up a bouquet and walked over to them. “Ladies, would you like to buy some flowers?”
The bouquet contained white roses and lilies, interspersed with baby’s breath and eucalyptus leaves.
