Chapter 46

As she expected, the compatibility between the two of them was not high—only 40%. It didn’t even reach the passing line. A report like this could not be seen by her parents. Once they saw it, they would likely oppose her relationship with Lu Yan, creating an obstacle for her plans.

Shen Su walked into the Director’s office with the report. “Dr. Deng, I’m applying for a re-test of the compatibility.”

Dr. Deng was a female Alpha. She pushed the glasses up the bridge of her nose, glanced at Shen Su, and spoke slowly: “If you don’t trust the equipment here, I can send the two samples to a laboratory abroad. It might be overkill, but I believe you can afford it.”

Shen Su took out another sealed bag and placed it on the desk, then sat in the chair opposite Dr. Deng. “Senior, help me out for the sake of the match I made for you!”

Inside the bag was a strand of Sheng Suyu’s hair. Earlier, taking advantage of Sheng Suyu’s lack of attention, Shen Su had plucked one just to deal with this exact situation.

Dr. Deng took the bag and adjusted her glasses. “Just this once. Don’t let it happen again.”

“Thanks, Senior! I’ll wait for your good news. Dinner’s on me next time.” Shen Su left the office with a smile.

Before officially transmigrating, the original setting of Shen Su had no friends. But how can one navigate this society without a network? Besides studying, Shen Su had done quite a bit—like playing matchmaker for Senior Deng and a younger student. It was a small favor at the time, but it had certainly come in handy now.

That night, Shen Su received an encrypted email in her inbox. Looking at the information Dr. Deng sent her, she was momentarily dazed. The password was the anniversary of Senior Deng and the younger student… What a massive mouthful of “dog food” (couple PDA). Damn!

This test report showed a compatibility of 70%. Not exceptionally high, but enough to be useful. However, the thought that this report actually represented the compatibility between Sheng Suyu and Lu Yan made her grit her teeth. The fact that the “substitute” had higher compatibility than the “original” was truly depressing.

As the System had said, after coming into contact with Sheng Suyu, the probability of her having nightmares increased. That night, Shen Su dreamt she was back in the psychiatric hospital again. This time, a new character was unlocked—Sheng Suyu’s uncle, Sheng Ze.

“Uncle, why is it you? Where are my parents?” Sheng Suyu looked behind Sheng Ze, her brow furrowed. “Are you here to take me away?”

“Suyu, your parents met with an unfortunate accident during their inspection trip to Africa. I’m here to see you on their behalf.” Sheng Ze was in his early thirties, wearing a black suit and black-framed glasses. Perhaps because it was a dream, Shen Su couldn’t see the expression on his face clearly; she only felt a shadow looming over her.

Sheng Suyu’s pupils contracted as she staggered back. “What do you mean? How is that possible?”

“I heard from the doctor that your mental state isn’t good. Rest well here. Once the doctor says you can leave, I’ll take you home. While you’re away, I’ll take proper care of the Sheng family industries for you,” Sheng Ze said in a deep voice.

Sheng Suyu’s fingertips trembled uncontrollably. Fear permeated her heart. “Uncle, what… what are you talking about? I’m clearly not sick! And that thing about my parents—you’re lying to me, right?”

“You don’t understand? Or are you pretending not to?” Sheng Ze pushed his glasses up, a cold light flashing in his eyes. “With your abilities, it’s only a matter of time before you ruin the Sheng family. My brother had poor taste in choosing a straw man like you. I’m here to correct that mistake.”

The final scene of the dream was Sheng Suyu watching Sheng Ze leave in utter despair. Because it was an immersive experience, Shen Su also felt filled with despair. Upon waking, she had an epiphany.

This dream is great… Finally, there was a way to deal with Sheng Suyu. It qualified as good news, but Shen Su still headed to work with a visibly exhausted face. She only managed to catch up on sleep during her lunch break.

In the afternoon, Shen Su’s work arrived. She needed to go on a business trip, and the project was related to CY Company. That night, the two of them messaged each other almost simultaneously.

【I’m going on a business trip.】 【I have to go on a business trip, too.】

Shen Su raised an eyebrow, guessing they were heading to the same place, but she didn’t point it out.

【Safe travels.】 【You too.】

As expected, they met at the negotiation table. Shen Su was only there to observe and wasn’t the main negotiator, giving her more opportunities to observe others—and Lu Yan.

Lu Yan had been promoted; she was now the head of Project Team One. Lu Yan seemed to glow while working—confident, certain, and navigating the negotiation table with ease. Even when at a disadvantage, she appeared to have a plan for everything.

In the end, a preliminary cooperation agreement was reached. Both sides planned a team-building event for the evening: hot springs in the mountains.

Out of a desire to avoid suspicion and other small thoughts, Lu Yan didn’t initiate conversation with Shen Su along the way. However, she constantly felt a gaze following her. After finishing her buffet dinner, Lu Yan was thinking of an excuse to secretly find Shen Su when a card was placed on her table.

“President Shen is waiting for you.” The person who delivered it left quickly without further explanation.

Lu Yan picked up the card, a weird feeling rising in her heart. Why did this feel a bit like an “affair”? The next second, she shook her head to drive the strange thought away. This was a pure friendship; how could she think such things? Perhaps Shen Su simply had something to discuss.

Following the staff’s directions, Lu Yan found Shen Su’s room. She pressed the doorbell. After about half a minute, the door opened to reveal Shen Su wrapped in a bath towel. Droplets of water still clung to her hair, sliding down her cheeks to merge with the moisture on her body.

“Come in.” Shen Su stepped aside, a hint of a smile in her eyes.

Lu Yan swallowed hard and walked in, instinctively closing the door. “Did Sugar have something to tell me?”

“Why so formal after just one day?” Shen Su laughed. “I was afraid you wouldn’t be comfortable soaking in the springs with everyone else, so I had someone send you a key card.”

“Sugar, you’re so good, so thoughtful.” Lu Yan pulled her gaze away from Shen Su’s body and smiled. Among the people she came with, there were Alphas and Betas; she was the only Omega.

“Enjoy yourself. It’s rare to have such a leisurely time.” Shen Su opened the second door in the room, and the scenery of the private courtyard came into view. The bright moon was reflected in the hot spring, and the steam acted like a veil, making the moonlight appear hazy.

Shen Su’s clothes were placed on a wooden bench by the spring. Looking at the neatly folded pile, an image couldn’t help but surface in Lu Yan’s mind—of how Shen Su had undressed and stepped into the water.

She stood behind Shen Su, watching as she re-entered the spring. The water gradually rose past her legs and chest. Had Lu Yan not been there, Shen Su likely would have dropped the towel before entering, but considering Lu Yan’s presence, she kept it on until she was submerged. Only then did she discard the towel onto the bank and comfortably close her eyes.

Lu Yan stared at the damp towel and Shen Su’s fair arms, her gaze unreadable. Sensing no sound of water, Shen Su slowly opened her eyes and looked at Lu Yan with confusion. “Yan Yan, why aren’t you coming in? What’s wrong?”

“Nothing, I was just spacing out.” Lu Yan hesitated by the edge for a moment before stepping in at the opposite corner, slowly soaking herself. She chose a very serious topic to ease her internal agitation. “Does Sugar think I was a bit too aggressive during the negotiation earlier?”

“No, you did very well. I’m at ease leaving the project in your hands.” Shen Su closed her eyes again, her voice long and certain.

Seeing that Shen Su had no intention of opening her eyes, Lu Yan quietly shifted her position. She began to observe Shen Su without restraint. Through the heavy mist, things were a bit blurry, so she moved closer—close enough to see the droplets on Shen Su’s lashes and the faint redness at the corners of her eyes. And those slightly parted lips… they looked very soft.

Lu Yan’s hands curled beneath the water, her gaze shimmering. Shen Su knew she was being watched, but she purposely kept her eyes shut, asking leisurely, “Yan Yan, have you had any strange dreams lately? I’ve taken an interest in studying dreams recently.”

“You like studying that?” Lu Yan lowered her lashes and took another step closer. “I haven’t had any strange dreams lately.” Only beautiful ones.

Shen Su breathed a sigh of relief. “Alright. I’ve had some quite odd ones.”

“What kind of dreams?” Without noticing, Lu Yan had pressed against Shen Su’s shoulder. Seeing no reaction, she felt safe enough to soak side-by-side with her.

“Dreaming… that someone filled a room with sketches of my face.” Shen Su slowly opened her eyes, propping her head on one hand as she turned to study Lu Yan’s expression.

Lu Yan blinked, her face showing no abnormality. “Who is ‘someone’?” Could it be a love rival I haven’t met yet?

Shen Su looked away. “I don’t know. I couldn’t see the face clearly.”

She felt that something was definitely wrong. If the “dark room” dream was from Sheng Suyu’s perspective, it was a matter of the previous life. But the Lu Yan of the previous life couldn’t have known her, let alone said those things.

System: Don’t worry, dear, I’m already checking to see where the error lies…

Shen Su didn’t count on the useless System; as long as the current Lu Yan didn’t know about the previous world, it was fine.

Lu Yan raised her hand, drawing circles on the water’s surface. “Although I haven’t had any eerie dreams, I’ve had some more ordinary ones. For example, us sitting together for a meal.”

Shen Su hummed. “That is very ordinary indeed, and it happens often.” The hot spring was truly comfortable; she couldn’t help but close her eyes to enjoy it again.

“There’s a saying that dreams are a reflection of the real world…” Lu Yan’s voice trailed off, her gaze landing on Shen Su’s closed eyes. “The dream might be something that happened in reality, or it could be a pining obsession for something unattainable.”

“It seems that confirms the saying. Us eating together is exactly what happens in reality, isn’t it?” Shen Su said leisurely.

It did happen, but the “eating” in the dream and the “eating” in reality were quite different. Lu Yan lowered her head, suppressing the impulse within her. “By the way, is Sugar going back to the capital tomorrow?”

“I have to inspect this area for a while longer.” Shen Su rubbed her temples. “I’ll find you to play when I get back.”

“Okay.”

When Lu Yan left, Shen Su personally saw her off. She ignored the curious gazes of others, simply patting Lu Yan’s shoulder naturally and saying with a smile, “Safe travels.”

“See you.” Lu Yan waved and turned to go through security with her colleagues.

The news of an Alpha being sent to the police station at the gala couldn’t be hidden. They all knew Lu Yan and Shen Su had a significant relationship and were full of curiosity, but since the two didn’t seem that intimate, no one dared to ask.

In the days following her return to the office, Lu Yan noticed a marked improvement in the attitude of those who used to look down on her for being an Omega. Perhaps it was because she had secured the major project, or perhaps it was because of Shen Su. It didn’t matter; with the gossipmonger gone, her efficiency had increased significantly.

After Shen Su finished her inspection, her father assigned her an assistant—a female Alpha named Zheng Ye. Feeling it was time to investigate that Sheng Ze, she gave Zheng Ye double salary to investigate him privately. Naturally, this didn’t escape her father’s notice.

That night, her father subtly brought up the Sheng family. “I hear there’s been some intense internal fighting in the Sheng family recently.”

“Is that so?” Shen Su raised an eyebrow, thinking to herself: Such a good thing exists?
