Chapter 8

Looking at the door in front of her, to be honest, Xie Shuyun was a little nervous.

She lowered her head and looked herself over, checking whether anything was wrong. Then she patted her cheeks. They had clearly only interacted downstairs just now, yet it still did not ease her tense emotions.

Xie Shuyun smiled bitterly.

Back then, she probably had not even been this nervous during her internship interview…

Xie Shuyun took a deep breath, raised her hand, curled her fingers, and knocked on the door.

She waited for quite a while. Just as Xie Shuyun thought she was going to be shut out and return empty-handed, the door finally opened a crack, revealing half of Cheng Lingxue’s body. She blocked everything behind her completely, giving no one any chance to peek inside.

Of course, Xie Shuyun did not dare investigate. Although they were both girls, there was still a difference between A and O. She could not act recklessly.

“This is today’s homework. If you forgot to bring yours home, you can see whether you want to photocopy mine, or you can report it to the teacher tomorrow and hand it in a little later.”

As Xie Shuyun spoke, she handed over the note in her hand.

“Mm. Thanks.”

Cheng Lingxue neatly took the note with her fingertips and glanced at it lightly. Only then did she raise her head and look at the person still standing in front of her without leaving.

“Anything else?”

“…No…”

As soon as the words fell, the door closed with a soft click. Although it was closed gently, the breeze it stirred up still lifted Xie Shuyun’s hair.

The sense of dislike and rejection was quite strong…

Xie Shuyun touched her nose.

Forget it. She would keep trying.

She did not ask Cheng Lingxue to open her heart to her. She only hoped she could live safely in the future.

The next morning, what Xie Shuyun had not expected was that Cheng Lingxue was already sitting at the dining table, slowly enjoying breakfast.

She had thought she would need to persuade her several more times before the other party would truly compromise. This was really beyond her expectations.

Even so, she naturally raised her hand and greeted Cheng Lingxue.

“Good morning. Did you sleep well last night? Are you feeling unwell anywhere?”

Cheng Lingxue glanced sideways at her. As if adhering to the principle of not speaking while eating or sleeping, she did not open her mouth. She only shook her head lightly, then picked up a soup dumpling and put it into her mouth before taking a sip of soy milk.

Her cheeks puffed out slightly as she slowly chewed. Although her expression was cold, that focused look and the way she chewed slowly made Xie Shuyun feel that Cheng Lingxue seemed to be in a pretty good mood.

Mm…

The kind of happy that came from eating.

Feeling as though she had discovered another side of the other girl, Xie Shuyun inexplicably found her a little cute.

After scanning the breakfast spread, Xie Shuyun noticed that Cheng Lingxue seemed to prefer Chinese-style breakfasts. She rarely touched things like toast or bread.

Xie Shuyun sat down and pushed the steamers of soup dumplings and other food a little closer to Cheng Lingxue.

“There’s PE class today, so you should eat more to save up your strength. If you like these, you can tell the maids and ask them to make more tomorrow.”

“…No need… I’m full.”

Cheng Lingxue drank the soy milk in one go, put down the cup, wiped her mouth, and said softly.

Hmm…

Three soup dumplings, one fried egg, and a small bowl of lettuce salad…

After calculating the food Cheng Lingxue had eaten and comparing it with the information she had looked up yesterday, Xie Shuyun felt that it should be about right. After confirming that she had not deliberately eaten too much or too little, Xie Shuyun finally felt relieved and picked up her chopsticks.

She first finished all the food Cheng Lingxue had not eaten. Only then did Xie Shuyun stretch her claws toward the other plates.

She did not notice that when she ate those leftovers, Cheng Lingxue’s thin lips opened and closed slightly a few times, as if she wanted to say something. In the end, however, no sound came out.

Cheng Lingxue lowered her head, her hair sliding down lightly and concealing her somewhat strange expression as well as the slightly reddened tips of her ears.

The two of them rode to school together again.

Xie Shuyun did not know whether it was her imagination, but she kept feeling that there were especially many people at the school gate today. The moment she and Cheng Lingxue got out of the car, everyone stared in their direction and kept whispering, leaving her completely baffled.

It was only after she met Shang Yan that she found out what was going on.

“Yunzi, did you really carry the school beauty on your back and run around yesterday? It’s already spread through the whole school. Everyone is guessing what your relationship is.”

Shang Yan looked at Xie Shuyun, who was seriously placing the gifts and letters from others into a paper bag. Her face was full of gossip and curiosity.

She had seen Xie Shuyun change, but that had only been yesterday. What could one day prove?

It was those people who liked talking nonsense. Their lives were too boring.

Putting aside whether Cheng Lingxue had any favorable feelings toward Xie Shuyun, Shang Yan did not really believe that a great love expert like Xie Shuyun would give up an entire garden of flowers for Cheng Lingxue. Just look at how carefully she was packing away her admirers’ gifts. Wasn’t that enough proof?

“What kind of relationship are they spreading?” Xie Shuyun asked curiously after putting the paper bag away.

“What else could it be? They’re saying you might have taken a fancy to the school beauty. You went to school with her yesterday, and you even carried her on your back. That’s enough to shake the entire school.”

As she spoke, Shang Yan paused, then pointed at Cheng Lingxue, who was seriously working on problems.

“And you came with the school beauty again today. I guarantee it’s already spread through the school by now.”

“It’s not as exaggerated as you’re making it sound. Shang Yan, have you been reading too many novels?”

Xie Shuyun shook her head helplessly.

“You know very well what kind of people your admirers are. Who knows whether those particularly extreme ones will do something excessive?”

Shang Yan’s words made Xie Shuyun’s body stiffen.

She had almost forgotten.

She had already transmigrated into a book. How could she view matters involving Cheng Lingxue based on her own ordinary feelings?

Cheng Lingxue was the female lead!

The female lead had a strange kind of attraction. All kinds of bizarre things could happen. Moreover, the original body had many admirers. There was no guarantee that they would not really go and trouble Cheng Lingxue.

No.

It was not that there was no guarantee.

Those people had already troubled Cheng Lingxue before. Xie Shuyun almost did not need to guess to know that her own actions would probably bring Cheng Lingxue more negative consequences.

Her head hurt…

If those people really made a move, then the favorability she already had at rock bottom in Cheng Lingxue’s heart might have to dig through the bottom of the valley before it could continue expressing itself.

“I’ll pay attention when the time comes. I won’t let them act recklessly.”

Shang Yan blinked. She felt as though she had realized something.

Could it be that Xie Shuyun still planned to keep standing up for Cheng Lingxue?

What kind of earth-shattering news was this?!

She still wanted to ask something, but unfortunately, the class bell rang and the homeroom teacher walked in. She could only suppress her desire to keep investigating and turn around to attend class properly.

During this class, her mind was not on the lesson. She hoped it would end quickly.

Finally, the bell rang…

“Xie Shuyun, Cheng Lingxue, the two of you come to my office. I have something to discuss with you.”

Damn it…

Teacher, how could you be so cruel!

Shang Yan looked resentfully as Xie Shuyun and Cheng Lingxue both walked out of the classroom. Then she was surrounded by other equally gossip-loving people.

She only wanted to cry.

She really did not know much more than they did. Don’t ask her!

Unaware of the collapse happening in her childhood friend’s heart, Xie Shuyun followed behind Cheng Lingxue somewhat uneasily.

She looked at Cheng Lingxue, then at the homeroom teacher walking in front of them, praying in her heart that it would be good news.

“Shuyun, Lingxue, there will be a Mathematical Olympiad competition in three months. You two are ranked first and second in the grade. I hope you can form a team and represent the school in this competition, bringing honor to the school.”

Xie Shuyun had participated in this kind of competition before and was willing to bring honor to the school.

But she carefully glanced at Cheng Lingxue.

Asking her to team up with Cheng Lingxue felt like a very difficult task. Cheng Lingxue definitely would not agree—

“No problem, Teacher.”

She agreed?!

Xie Shuyun widened her eyes and felt that there might be something wrong with her ears.

“Thank you, Lingxue. What about you, Shuyun?”

The homeroom teacher turned her gaze toward Xie Shuyun and froze slightly.

In her impression, Xie Shuyun’s gloomy and arrogant expression had already disappeared. Now, she was like warm sunlight revealed after dark clouds had dispersed, carrying an aura that made people feel comfortable.

The homeroom teacher, who had originally been worried because of Cheng Lingxue and Xie Shuyun’s relationship, was instead shocked by Xie Shuyun’s change.

How had the Xie family’s little tyrant changed so much?

She had not heard of anything major happening in the Xie family.

“Teacher, I have no problem either.”

Hearing this, the homeroom teacher finally came back to her senses and hurriedly took out the registration form and a small booklet.

“This is the registration form. The competition rules and procedures are also in this booklet. Go back and read it. If you have any questions, you can come to me anytime. I’ll give you practice problems every day. Since there is a team event, the two of you should try to discuss things together…”

She gave many more instructions. It was only when class was about to start that the two of them finally came out of the office. Each of them was holding a small stack of test papers, which were the assignments that had to be completed this week.

Seeing that Cheng Lingxue was about to leave, Xie Shuyun hurriedly spoke.

“Lingxue, wait a moment.”

Forcing down the discomfort she felt at being called that by the other party, Cheng Lingxue turned around and looked at Xie Shuyun, waiting for her to speak.

“The teacher said there’s a team event, and that we need to discuss things together to build teamwork… Do you have any thoughts?”

As she said the last sentence, Xie Shuyun could be said to be carefully observing Cheng Lingxue’s expression.

Although the two of them lived in the same place, Cheng Lingxue’s attitude yesterday was still fresh in her mind. She absolutely would not let Xie Shuyun enter her room.

Not to mention Xie Shuyun’s own room.

That was the place where Cheng Lingxue had almost been forcibly marked. She absolutely did not dare bring it up.

After a moment of silence, Cheng Lingxue slowly spoke.

“Let’s go to the library on the weekend.”

“Okay, okay. The library it is.”

Xie Shuyun hurriedly nodded, greatly agreeing with this idea.

If she had to be alone in the same space as Cheng Lingxue, Xie Shuyun felt that she would probably suffocate first. An open space was much better.

Cheng Lingxue glanced sideways at Xie Shuyun’s relieved smile.

Although she did not know what the other party was thinking, Cheng Lingxue inexplicably felt that Xie Shuyun’s thoughts were definitely related to her.

And they were probably quite rude.

A trace of displeasure surfaced in her heart.

But she was also a little curious…

What exactly was this person thinking?
