After Being Taken Home By A Powerful, Possessive Omega - Chapter 2
Pei Heng did not follow her upstairs.
Standing on the second floor, Ji Chun frowned thoughtfully at the row of bedrooms.
Since Pei Heng was her wife, she ought to sleep in the master bedroom. But she and her wife had only just met.
“Host~ Charge straight into the master bedroom!! Only by getting close to a woman’s body can you win her heart!”
That made sense.
Ji Chun nodded solemnly and walked toward the master bedroom. Yet the instant her fingers touched the door handle, a sharp pain stabbed through them, as though a faint electric current had traveled from her fingertips directly into her heart.³
She lowered her eyes and pressed a hand over her wildly unsettled heartbeat.
“No. I don’t think I can go inside.”
“Why?” The system’s mechanical voice was filled with confusion.
“I don’t know… She wouldn’t like it.”
The woman, so pale she was nearly translucent, stood beside the door. Her suspended fingertips slowly curled before she withdrew them little by little.
Only after a long while did a hint of expression return to her bewildered eyes.
“I’m… a kept canary, aren’t I?”
“Why would you think of yourself as a kept canary?”
“Because I’m beautiful.”²
The system responded with a silent electronic hum.
Ji Chun turned and entered another empty bedroom. She placed her only piece of luggage—the fifty-yuan bill in her pocket—inside a drawer.¹
The heavy solid-wood furniture seemed to have been abandoned in a forgotten corner of time, completely at odds with this villa overflowing with futuristic technology.
Warm air rose through the gaps in the floorboards, maintaining the room at the temperature most comfortable for her body.
This room was rather unusual.
The bookshelves were packed with brightly colored books, ranging from Postpartum Care for Omegas to My Domineering Omega Stepsister Fell in Love with Me.⁴
Ji Chun pulled out the book closest to her and opened the cover.
The Kept Alpha Canary’s Guide to Self-Cultivation.
Mm.
She desperately needed something like this at the moment.
Before Pei Heng arrived, she read while committing notes to memory.
First, she must not interfere with her benefactor’s personal space or social life. She had to provide good service, refrain from developing any inappropriate feelings for her benefactor, and always know when to stop.
Second, if her benefactor had an unattainable first love, she had to leave before that person returned so she would not embarrass her benefactor.²
Finally…
The bedroom door opened.
The creak became the only sound in Ji Chun’s sluggish world.
A string of Buddhist prayer beads hung from the woman’s pale wrist. The gentle expression in her eyes fractured the instant she saw the book in Ji Chun’s hands, as though shattered roof tiles were crumbling away piece by piece.
She turned her gaze aside, seemingly trying her utmost to suppress her emotions.¹
But the person before her was like a little puppy.
Ji Chun stared at her with fervent dependence. Without even putting down the book, she stiffly rose and walked toward her. She tripped over her own feet and fell to the floor, striking her pale wrist hard enough to leave a vivid red mark.
Yet her gaze never strayed from Pei Heng for even a moment.
Pei Heng crouched before the struggling puppy.
The villa’s warm lighting cast a gentle glow over her features. She took a collar from her pocket and curved her lips in a mild smile.¹
Her slender fingers settled against Ji Chun’s pale neck.
With a click, she fastened the buckle.
Ji Chun lowered her head and saw two clearly engraved characters on the small dog tag:
**Pei Heng.**¹
“Pei Heng.”
She awkwardly sounded out the name, then raised her damp eyes to look at the woman gazing down at her from above.
“Big Sister.”
The rules for kept canaries she had just read were instantly thrown to the back of her mind.
The refreshing scent of sandalwood wrapped around her. Ji Chun stared fervently at the place where the scent was strongest—the small patch of soft skin at the back of Pei Heng’s neck.
She longed to move closer.
She longed to be touched by the woman before her.
She even wanted to embrace her.
To swallow her whole.
Her breathing gradually grew heavier.
At last, Ji Chun timidly reached out, only for Pei Heng to pull away the instant her fingers touched that jade-pale skin.
The woman shot to her feet.
The movement stirred her hair, exposing the flush at the tips of her ears.
“Wife, can you hug me?”
The puppy, denied what she wanted, wrinkled her nose.
Her mind was so sluggish that it seemed incapable of thinking about two things at once.
From the instant Pei Heng entered the room, all her concentration had narrowed infinitely until it settled on that slender figure.
Somewhere deep inside, Ji Chun felt that their relationship should not be like this.
They should be inseparably intimate.
They should crush each other fiercely into their very flesh and blood.
They should share life and death.
Yet when she truly raised her eyes and looked into those warm-colored eyes, a hidden needle pierced her heart.
The pain was sharp.
She gasped softly, abruptly clutched her chest, and curled into a ball on the floor.
“Come back to my room with me.”
Pei Heng seemed to have expected this. Blue veins stood faintly along the pale arm hanging by her side.
“Your room? Isn’t this—”
The pain receded with the sound of that cool voice.
Ji Chun raised a pair of confused eyes. Her hair was somewhat messy and unkempt from not being cut for a long time, yet her lips remained moist and rosy.
She looked sickly.
Tempting.
“You’ll stay in my bedroom… and sleep on the floor.”
No matter how much Pei Heng wanted to hold Ji Chun while they slept, she would not gamble on an Alpha who had only just awakened and whose brain was currently the size of a soybean—not when they had no proper relationship or status.³
But she was equally worried about leaving Ji Chun alone in this room.
Inside Ji Chun’s mind, the system suddenly exploded like some kind of firework.
“You get to sleep right beside Pei Heng! Congratulations, Host, on unlocking the achievement: The One Closest to the Water Gets the Moon First! Your reward is one kiss!”
“Don’t… set off firecrackers inside my head.”
Ji Chun wrinkled her nose.
Her fear of that bedroom tangled with her inexplicable dependence on Pei Heng.
She lowered her fluffy head, her toes unconsciously feeling across the floor.
She was conflicted.
A long while passed.
It was only after she had unconsciously followed Pei Heng into the room that she suddenly realized what she had done.
She was a kept canary.
A kept canary could not refuse her benefactor.
That was basic professional awareness.
“Sit here and don’t move.”
Pei Heng took out a half-used jar of ointment from the bedroom. She scooped out a large amount with a spoon, crouched before Ji Chun, and spread it evenly over each of her joints as though applying lubricant, massaging it in thoroughly.²
Then she deliberately applied extra to Ji Chun’s fingers, rubbing them carefully one by one.⁴
Ji Chun lowered her eyes toward the elegant, otherworldly woman kneeling before her, as lofty and untouchable as a sacred disciple of the Buddha.
Her lashes drooped, but she made no attempt to hide the covetousness and possessiveness in her eyes.
She wanted a taste.
She was so hungry for her.
What did her lips taste like?
The movement against her hands abruptly stopped.
Caught off guard, Ji Chun met the gaze of the woman half-kneeling beside her.¹
Pei Heng froze slightly when she saw the look in Ji Chun’s eyes, then released an almost imperceptible sigh.
Forget it.
Why should she argue with an Alpha who had not even properly awakened to desire and reason yet?¹
Rubbing ointment into her fingers was admittedly intimate.
But Ji Chun’s hands truly were rough.
Holding hands ordinarily would be tolerable enough, but if those fingers were ever placed there…
Pei Heng would not be able to bear it.
After finishing with Ji Chun’s fingers, Pei Heng stood.
She had barely taken one step toward the door when someone caught the corner of her clothes.
The person sitting on the small sofa seemed to want to hook her fingers around Pei Heng’s hand, yet she was far too timid.
She merely parted her lips and whispered cautiously, “Where are you going?”
Pei Heng paused.
Within her warm-colored eyes, a tiny reflection of Ji Chun gathered.
“I’m going downstairs to entertain the guests. I’ll come back soon.”
The bedroom door closed.
The final narrowing crack carried Pei Heng’s silhouette away.
With a click, the room locked.
“Host, wake up. She’s gone.”
Ji Chun withdrew her gaze.
“Didn’t you just say… there was a kiss as a reward? Why didn’t she give it to me?”
The system’s mechanical voice crackled like an old television.
“The reward is a kiss from me~ Mwah~”
Listening closely, it even sounded a little shy.¹
…
It only handed out things nobody wanted.¹²
Ji Chun lowered her eyes to the small sofa beneath her.
It had probably been custom-made according to Pei Heng’s figure, so it looked a little too small beneath Ji Chun.
But it was saturated with Pei Heng’s sandalwood scent.
She liked it very much.
—
Pei Heng looked down from the second floor.
Everyone who had originally come to watch the excitement had already left. Only a woman in a trench coat remained.
Hearing the footsteps, she raised her eyes. Her amorous fox-like eyes curved when she saw Pei Heng, seemingly in a friendly greeting.
“How did it go? Were there any irregularities with this awakening?”
The woman’s voice was lazy.
She reclined against the sofa as though she had no bones at all.
Seated diagonally opposite her, Pei Heng held herself impeccably upright, her back perfectly straight. Her slightly wavy hair had been arranged into a gentle bun.
They were clearly two completely different kinds of people, yet somehow looked remarkably harmonious sitting together.
“She seems very dependent on me.”
Pei Heng flipped through the documents Ke Qingjue had brought, reading them page by page.
“Hmph. That’s perfectly normal. Who in Jiangdu doesn’t know how much she loved you before she died? Had I been in your place, I would have tried being with her years ago. A top-tier Alpha with rare mental power, young and devoted on top of that.”
“Stop joking.”
Pei Heng unconsciously tightened her grip on the pages.
After noticing, she deliberately smoothed them flat again.
It resembled the countless moments in which she had comforted herself over and over.
“What does ‘abnormal emotional memory’ mean?”
She suddenly raised her eyes and handed the documents to Ke Qingjue.
“I don’t know. Logically, her memories were completely formatted, but 2.2 percent of her emotional structure remains abnormal. As for whether it will affect her, we’ll have to see how things develop.”
“You’ve truly decided, then? You’re abandoning the completely maxed-out affection level she had before and choosing to start over? I wouldn’t be able to bear it.”¹
“This is the best path.”
Pei Heng’s lashes trembled faintly.
Her straight, slender waist seemed fragile enough to snap. Shrouded in emotion, she appeared even more vulnerable.
Ke Qingjue looked away and silently cursed herself.
How could she possibly think Pei Heng was weak?
This was the woman who had once single-handedly manipulated everyone around her and sent more than half her relatives to prison.
Ke Qingjue remembered that moment three years ago, shortly before dawn.
The blood-covered woman had held a gun in her hand. Dim firelight from the explosion burned behind her, while a trace of blood-red reflected in her amber eyes.
Even when her gaze landed on the figure who had taken a blade for her, her expression had only faltered slightly.
After that dawn, she obtained everything.
Yet the only thing she brought home was a person whose vital signs had already vanished.
Once everything was over, the impassive woman knocked on Ke Qingjue’s door and dropped a body before her that was still faintly warm.
“Bring her back to life.”
“Otherwise, you can die with her.”³
That second sentence sealed off every possible escape route.
Ke Qingjue turned off the news report on her phone about the crisis engulfing her family’s corporation, then curved her lips in a careless smile.
“Miss Pei, this person is thoroughly dead. Even if I manage to revive her, she might not be the same person who wakes up.”
“You might as well choose me instead. We’re both top-tier Omegas. Neither of us is valued by our families. We’ve both been exploited and abandoned. I’m the only one who truly understands you. Aren’t we a perfect match?”
The woman’s expression darkened slightly.
She raised the black muzzle of the gun and, without the slightest hesitation, blasted a bloody hole through Ke Qingjue’s shoulder.
The smells of gunpowder and blood spread together through the room.
Ke Qingjue’s eyes widened as she stared at the woman who seemed to have become a complete stranger overnight.
The terror of death rapidly engulfed her.
All color instantly drained from her rosy lips.
She lowered her head and, trembling, placed the bracelet in her hand beside the person lying “dead” before her.
It was her agreement.
She would use everything she had painstakingly built while lying low for more than a decade to save an unrelated person for Pei Heng.
