What Should I Do If I Wake Up and It’s the Apocalypse? (GL) - Chapter 15
The entire floor seemed utterly quiet.
At Mu Xiao’s insistence, she walked at the very front to lead the way, while Yi Sheng also received one of Mu Xiao’s tennis rackets and walked at the very back.
The group of four tried their best to soften their breathing and footsteps, quietly moving toward the right.
The electricity was still being supplied, so the whole floor was brightly lit. Because of that, bloodstains and mangled limbs could occasionally be seen on the walls and floor.
This was far more impactful than seeing things from afar in the apartment stairwell or on the street.
With a deathly pale face, Mu Xiao carefully avoided those mottled traces as much as possible. After only a few steps, they smoothly reached the nurses’ station.
The nurses’ station was a space enclosed by desks and cabinets on three sides, with its back against the wall. There were no zombies inside. Mu Xiao made a hand gesture to the people behind her, guarded the entrance there, and let An Qi, Ling Qi, and the others go in first. Only then did she enter last.
Once inside this nurses’ station, which barely counted as an independent space, Mu Xiao sat down against the desk cabinet and rubbed An Qi’s head.
An Qi’s complexion was also terrible. Even an adult who saw such a bloody scene with their own eyes would not be much better, let alone a seven-year-old child.
“Do you feel like throwing up?” Mu Xiao quietly asked An Qi, while also sweeping her gaze over the area, searching for something that might exist there, like a plastic bag.
But An Qi shook her head without hesitation. She did not speak, afraid that she might not be able to hold it in. The eyes she turned toward Mu Xiao were clearly filled with anxiety and insistence.
“Your mommy’s office is over there.” Mu Xiao knew what An Qi was most worried about. In truth, little An Qi’s endurance also made her breathe a sigh of relief.
The nurses’ station was located in the largest hall on this floor. The place they had entered from just now was the passageway, and when Mu Xiao had taken a moment to glance into the hall, from that one slanted angle alone, she had seen four or five zombies.
The only thing they could be grateful for was that these zombies were relatively sluggish, and without sound attracting them, they did not pay much attention to places slightly farther away.
Therefore, Mu Xiao and the others’ safest method was to slip silently into An Ming’s office. After all, these zombies were only five to ten meters away from them, separated only by a few desks and counters.
Thinking this, Mu Xiao confirmed that An Qi could still hold on, then looked at Yi Sheng and pointed in a direction.
Yi Sheng immediately nodded. That was indeed where An Ming’s office was.
“You all hide here first. Don’t move around.” Mu Xiao’s voice was almost the lowest sound she could make.
After saying that, Mu Xiao crouched and shifted a few steps toward the other side. Only then did she quietly poke her head out to check the situation near the nurses’ station.
With just one look, she sucked in a breath of cold air and immediately lowered herself, hiding her entire body properly. Forget the zombies in the large open space leading to the wards; just in the small area on the right leading to An Ming’s office, there were three zombies.
If it were in a narrow passageway, or if a doorframe limited the number of zombies, Mu Xiao might still be able to fight. But if they made any movement here, the nearby zombies would all gather around.
Facing the questioning gazes the three of them cast at her, Mu Xiao gritted her teeth and carefully moved back to them. She was just about to speak when she suddenly heard the crying of a child from not far across the way.
The child seemed to be crying out for their daddy and mommy. In this quiet moment, the crying sounded especially abrupt.
Before Mu Xiao could even react, she heard some faint other movements mixed in with the crying. She widened her eyes and looked at the three people in front of her. Immediately after, she saw Yi Sheng react first and prepare to stand up and rush out.
“Don’t move!” Mu Xiao almost instinctively reached out and pressed down hard on Yi Sheng’s shoulder, temporarily preventing him from moving. At the same time, she lowered her voice and squeezed those two words out from between her teeth.
Yi Sheng’s emotions were especially obvious. From astonishment at Mu Xiao stopping him, he quickly turned to dissatisfaction and anger, but then it all sank into silence.
“There’s no time,” Mu Xiao said to him.
Almost the instant Mu Xiao’s words fell, the crying turned into a scream, then stopped abruptly. The whole thing had lasted no more than two or three seconds.
The floor became quiet once again.
No. There were still the uneasy roars of zombies. The few of them huddled inside the nurses’ station, feeling as if they could hear faint tearing sounds, even chewing.
Mu Xiao glanced at Yi Sheng. After confirming that he would not do anything impulsive for the moment, she released her hand and took the risk of peeking toward the opposite side.
The zombies that had been wandering near the nurses’ station earlier were all gone. On the left side across from them, in an open ward directly facing the nurses’ station, there were traces of zombies.
The commotion just now had drawn all the nearby zombies into the ward.
The fresh smell of blood made them continue wandering inside the ward, trying to search for a possible next prey.
Mu Xiao silently took all this in. As she crouched down again, she looked at Yi Sheng. “Yi Sheng, can the ward door be locked from the outside?”
Yi Sheng was still immersed in the sudden incident that had lasted less than a minute. The danger of the apocalypse and the fragility of life had shown their truest side in that brief span of time.
If he had rushed out just now, not only would he not have had enough time to save that child, he would definitely have gotten himself killed too. He might even have implicated the others hiding in this space that had almost no defensive function.
Being called out by Mu Xiao made Yi Sheng regain his senses slightly. Instinctively, he told Mu Xiao what he knew. “It’s a sliding door. There should be keys at the nurses’ station that can lock it from the outside.”
Only after answering did Yi Sheng fully react. He looked at Mu Xiao in shock as she had already begun moving. “Are you planning to go lock the door?”
“There are too many zombies. If we’re discovered, it’ll cause a chain reaction. It’s too dangerous.” Mu Xiao carefully searched through the drawers, looking for the key Yi Sheng had mentioned. “This is an opportunity. Do you know where the key is? We can’t lose this chance. We have to be fast!”
Yi Sheng watched Mu Xiao’s movements. Suddenly, he also got up, opened a drawer, took out a key, and gripped it tightly in his hand. “I’ll go.”
Mu Xiao stretched her hand toward him instead, looking straight into Yi Sheng’s eyes. “You stay here and protect them. If something unexpected happens, take them and rush into the office first, then think of a way.”
After only a moment, Yi Sheng was defeated by Mu Xiao’s gaze.
He had no confidence, while Mu Xiao at this moment gave him the feeling that she might succeed.
“Be careful.” Finally, Yi Sheng took down the key to that ward and handed it to Mu Xiao.
Mu Xiao grinned, revealing a mouthful of small white teeth. “Being torn apart alive by zombies isn’t a good way to die. I’ll do my best.”
After saying this, Mu Xiao quietly climbed out from the nurses’ station, lowered her body, and moved along the wall toward that ward.
However, just as Mu Xiao finally managed to reach the ward entrance, a zombie slowly swayed out from inside.
Mu Xiao’s heart lurched. Almost instantly, she made a decision. She stepped to the doorway, lifted her leg, and kicked the zombie back into the room.
Ear-piercing roars immediately sounded from inside the room. A dense, dark mass surged toward the doorway.
Mu Xiao’s heart was beating wildly. She forced herself to restrain the instinct to run away, then reached out and slammed the sliding door shut with a bang. She inserted the key into the lock and turned it twice.
This was the first time Mu Xiao felt that the sound of a door lock turning was so pleasant.
The door trembled under the zombies’ pounding from inside. Mu Xiao pulled her hand back as if she had been electrocuted, looked around, then turned and leaped back toward the nurses’ station in a few steps. Her wildly pounding heart had not yet calmed, and she was still panting with excitement.
“Done. Let’s hurry and find her!”
After saying that, she strode toward An Ming’s office.
As soon as she opened the door, Mu Xiao almost slammed headfirst into a zombie inside the office.
She hurriedly swept the tennis racket toward the zombie’s head, but just before it hit, she turned the racket face and used the flat surface to knock the zombie to the ground.
That was close… Sure enough, she could not get too cocky. Mu Xiao patted her chest, still feeling lingering fear.
“Mu Xiao Sister, is Mommy there?” An Qi’s anxious voice came from behind her.
Mu Xiao’s hand tightened. She looked at the ragged white coat on the zombie struggling to climb up, hesitated for a moment, then moved her feet aside so An Qi could see.
