After I Woke Up to Find I Had a Wife - Chapter 18
Fu Xinran opened her eyes. When her body moved, she lowered her head and looked at the arm wrapped around her from the front. She got up from Lin You’s embrace. The sky was already bright.
Lin You’s eyes were tightly shut, showing no signs of waking. Her arm was still half-embracing Fu Xinran.
Fu Xinran pulled away the hand Lin You had around her waist and leaned against the headboard. She picked up the remote beside her and pressed the button to open the curtains. The curtains slowly parted to both sides, leaving only a layer of sheer gauze.
The change in brightness made Lin You a little uncomfortable. Her body automatically burrowed forward, and she buried her head against Fu Xinran’s waist.
Fu Xinran raised her hand and gently placed it on Lin You’s fluffy head. Her fingers idly played with Lin You’s short hair now and then, but her gaze had drifted somewhere unknown. After lying in bed for a while, Fu Xinran got up.
When Lin You woke up, the sun was already hanging high. Still sleepy and a little foolish from sleep, Lin You rubbed her eyes blearily and turned her head to look around. She was the only one left on the bed.
Haah. A huge yawn cleared her mind quite a bit. Lin You lazily stretched. She decided to move her exercise to the afternoon. She did not really want to move in the morning.
Lin You sighed. As expected, she had fallen into depravity. She could not sleep this late in the future. Last night, she had not fallen asleep until three in the morning. She had been so excited she almost got up to throw a set of combination punches, and had even passively accepted Fu Xinran rolling into her arms.
Although hugging her had been very comfortable too. Cough. Lin You’s gaze flickered, and she felt a little embarrassed.
She was a woman, yet when she held another person, her thoughts wandered. Only after holding her did she feel satisfied. Lin You collapsed onto the bed in despair and rolled around. Was she really bent?
Lin You twisted around on the bed, her heart full of excitement and restlessness. It felt as if her whole body was filled with strength, but she was still so shy. Lin You covered her head, the corners of her mouth lifting exaggeratedly, her brows moving with happiness.
After twisting on the bed for a long time, Lin You threw the blanket aside with a swish and ran toward the bathroom with a head of messy hair.
This was the bad thing about being an Alpha. She had to stay clear-hearted and free of desire. She could not even think about it.
After Lin You finished washing up, she finally removed the blocking patch from the area behind her shoulder. This was the best blocking patch she had bought. It could block pheromones in all directions to the greatest extent.
It was square, extremely thin, and the same color as skin, avoiding any awkwardness when wearing clothes.
Fortunately, the humanities in this world had progressed quickly. Unlike more than a hundred years ago, Alphas now controlled their pheromones very strictly and personally considered it a very private matter. The law was also very complete and powerful.
If someone openly scattered their pheromones everywhere, they might be taken to the police station within less than a minute for disturbing public order and be detained for fifteen days.
If they exceeded the limits of public security, they could be sentenced to three to ten years in prison. In more serious cases, their pheromone gland would be directly stripped, equivalent to chemical castration. Being unable to sense a loved one’s pheromones was like a phone unable to receive a signal—one could only collapse in rage.
People whose glands were stripped were different from Betas. Although Betas were insensitive, when moved by emotion, they could still receive the other party’s pheromones.
Lin You applied a new blocking patch, changed clothes, and prepared to eat breakfast before heading out. Only then did she see several documents in her email that needed her signature. She also had to sit in on an emergency meeting held by the technical department.
“Are you free tonight?” Fu Xinran, dressed in simple and loose home clothes, casually flipped through a magazine and looked at Lin You, who was about to leave.
Lin You nodded. “I’ll be back by three in the afternoon at the latest.”
“Mm. Tonight, accompany me back to the Fu family for dinner.”
“…All right.” Lin You agreed, then left with the assistant who had come to pick her up.
It was the weekend, so not many people were working overtime at the company. Only the technical department was noisy, arguing in the empty conference room.
The director of the technical department had moved a chair and sat by the door, legs crossed, leisurely waiting for this group to finish arguing.
The technical departments of other companies were quiet as still water. Their company’s technical department was no different from a vegetable market.
Recently, a game mainly developed by the company was about to be released after its second beta test. In the end, a group of people were still arguing there over whether the game was not exciting or attractive enough and needed to be delayed.
It was a competitive mobile game. It broke through previous boundaries, had extremely high clarity, and a very high degree of personal mental and sensory participation. Since it was a mobile game, it was convenient for many people to play anytime and anywhere as long as they had internet.
Lin You took the internal beta version of the game and glanced at it. Following the instructions, she tried playing a few rounds. It felt pretty good. It was indeed very attractive, and, like a certain Honor game on Earth, easily addictive.
A group of people in plaid shirts rarely slapped tables, kicked chairs, and argued passionately. Lin You did not disturb them. In the original body’s memories, she had seen six or seven scenes of the technical department holding meetings.
Every time was this spectacular. A group of science and engineering people usually did not like talking, but once something in their field came up, they could argue until sparks flew everywhere. And every single time, it was not even over anything major.
Lin You signed the documents and calmly adjusted her cufflinks. Today, she wore a loose white suit. Under the wide-legged suit pants, her long, beautiful legs looked even more defined and striking. Her aura was restrained, yet impossible to ignore.
Director Fang of the technical department casually stroked the few sparse hairs on top of his head. Pushing up his glasses, he clasped his hands behind his back and smiled kindly, looking just like a wolf grandmother.
He went up one by one and patted the excited young people.
“Shitou, ah, the game launches at nine tomorrow morning. Is that all right?”
Shitou, known for being smelly and hard like a rock, was a thin male Beta. He widened his narrow eyes and really wanted to tell the smiling director that it was not all right.
But when his eyes shifted and he saw the elegant and capable President Lin waving at him, he could only silently swallow the words “not all right” and humbly nod.
Director Fang was satisfied. The group of technical staff who had just been arguing all looked at the person who had betrayed them.
We agreed to resist the pressure together, yet you surrendered first. Young people these days really have no martial virtue!
Shitou lowered his head, nervously rubbing his jeans with both hands, wanting to leave under everyone’s cannibalistic gazes.
Lin You looked at the wronged little boy, a smile rising at the corners of her lips. She clapped her hands. Hearing the applause, everyone angrily looked over, wanting to see who was kicking them while they were down.
Following the sound, they saw the president, who was usually busy with countless matters every day, sitting by the door of the conference room.
Then had the president seen their unreasonable behavior just now?
It was over. Were they going to be criticized? The group of technical staff looked pitifully at their immediate superior, Director Fang.
“Everyone has truly worked hard. This core technology research and development relied entirely on everyone working together. The publicity department, marketing department, legal affairs department, and so on are all waiting for everyone to bring out the results. The game players who have been looking forward to it are also waiting.”
“Everyone has already produced your best side. Our several internal tests and second beta tests all show no problems. Then after fixing the final bugs, we will release the mobile game, Counter War.”
“And in the week after release, everyone will still need to work overtime and fix bugs at any time. I played the game for a while too. It’s very good.”
“The previous things aren’t important. What matters is that aside from the technical department’s research and development rewards and commissions, I personally will also book a free seven-day luxury trip for everyone. This is a reward separate from the company’s. I’ll treat everyone to lunch today too. Lunch will be delivered to the company later. Only when you’re full will you have motivation.”
Everyone grew excited. This was direct praise from the big boss! And it was a real reward too. Just thinking about it made them happy.
The group of technical staff touched their increasingly sparse hair excitedly as they watched Lin You leave. Director Fang looked at the atmosphere, which was now so passionate and perfect for overtime. With a wave of his hand, everyone went back to work overtime.
When Lin You returned to her office, she finally breathed a sigh of relief and remembered that Ranran had said they were going to the Fu family for dinner tonight.
She hurriedly called her father-in-law. Right now, Ranran was in the morning sickness stage, so everything she ate had to be considered carefully. If the ingredients were prepared well, it could reduce the frequency of her nausea.
Lin You flipped through the original body’s memories of getting along with her old father-in-law. Aside from work, it was still work. This family was truly boring. It must have been so hard on Fu Xinran.
Beep… beep… beep…
“Lin You, is something wrong?” A cold, stern male voice came through the phone.
“Dad, it’s like this. You know Ranran is pregnant. Recently, she’s reached the stage where she has morning sickness. There are many things she can’t eat. The taste should be refreshing, but it can’t lack nutrition either. Please tell the chef to try to make the meat dishes look like vegetable dishes, without any fishy smell. Is that all right?”
Lin You anxiously gave her old father-in-law a whole string of instructions.
The other side of the phone was silent for several dozen seconds. Finally, he stiffly said, “I’ve noted it down.” Then, with a snap, he hung up.
Without Lin You knowing, her serious and stern old father-in-law directly called the family chef.
“My daughter is pregnant.”
The chef nodded in confusion and responded. Of course he knew the boss’s younger daughter was pregnant. Earlier, he had already been instructed that today’s dinner should prioritize the pregnant woman.
But what came next was the first time he had heard his stern and cold boss say such a long string of words at once.
“She’s pregnant and has morning sickness. Make the flavors lighter. Make the meat look like vegetables. There must not be even a trace of fishy smell. It would be best if everything looked like vegetarian dishes. Did you note that down?”
“I noted it, I noted it. I’ll start preparing again now.” The round, plump chef wiped his sweat and noted down all of the boss’s requirements.
Sitting across from Fu Jingye’s office desk, Fu Xinyan raised a brow and smiled with half-mockery. “Didn’t you say she could eat anything?”
“Lin You called specifically to remind me. I can’t sweep away her face.” Fu Jingye silently glanced at his eldest daughter, put away his phone, and continued discussing the piece of land in the west of the city with her.
Fu Xinyan coldly pulled the corners of her lips into a smile. It made people’s scalps tingle. Whether she believed it or not was unknown, and Fu Jingye did not care either.
Lin You, who had hung up the phone, did not know about this. She leaned back in her chair with her eyes closed and pulled up the original body’s memories again. Her second mission was to investigate why the original body’s mothers had abandoned the original body and left home.
“System, can you issue some simple missions sometime? For example, picking up money on the road and handing it to the police uncle, or if there’s a disaster somewhere, I can donate money generously.”
System: “Those are all ineffective missions unrelated to Host. If Host really wants to do simple missions, I have plenty here. Fast, easy, and with high points. Do you want them?”
Lin You became interested. “Tell me.”
System: “Mission One: Hold Fu Xinran’s hand for one hour without letting go. Reward: 500 points. Time limit can stack. Mission Two: Kiss Fu Xinran once and make her heart value reach 100. Reward: 500 points. Mission Three—”
“Stop.” Lin You, covered in black lines, called a halt. “Are you an undercover agent sent by Fu Xinran? Last night, she just said she wanted to do that thing with me, and now you already have missions like this.”
The system would not accept such a huge blame. “Missions are randomly issued based on Host’s environment and requests.”
“So you’re saying it’s still my fault?” Lin You laughed from anger.
The system stopped speaking and hid again.
Although Lin You said nothing aloud, in her heart, she circled around the missions the system had given her. For a moment, she was tempted.
