After I Woke Up to Find I Had a Wife - Chapter 22
Lin You closed her eyes and leaned back in the chair, recalling everything that happened after she returned from her “old father-in-law’s” house.
She had accompanied Fu Xinran on a short walk, dried her hair, watched a comedy movie, and then the two of them had gone to bed.
When she woke up again, she had awakened from a nightmare. Lin You curled her index finger and placed it by her lips in thought. The last time she heard that vague, muffled voice, she had suddenly gained more than three years of the original body’s memories.
It had not been long since then, yet she had heard that vague voice again. Could it be that the original body wanted to remind her to do something? Could it be that the original body had not left yet?
Lin You pressed her lips tightly together, her eyes filled with darkness. What exactly was she supposed to do?
She could only wait. As for the system, she did not count on it anymore. Aside from issuing sticky, clingy romance missions, she had yet to see any use for it. She might as well raise it like a little pet.
Once she got the investigation results and the treatment records from Doctor Zhuo tomorrow, perhaps she would have some clues.
After Lin You left, the motion-sensing lights in the study automatically turned off with a click.
When she returned to the bedroom, Fu Xinran was actually awake. She was leaning against the headboard, her eyes barely able to stay open, yet stubbornly waiting for her.
Lin You’s heart felt as though something had gently kneaded it—soft, numb, and warmly melting. At that instant, looking at Fu Xinran, Lin You truly felt her heart move.
She lifted the blanket and sat on the other side of the bed, carefully pulling Fu Xinran into her arms and slowly laying her flat.
Fu Xinran opened her eyes and looked at her once. Then she yawned politely, relaxed her body, and fell asleep in Lin You’s arms.
This was the first time Lin You had taken the initiative to hold her in her arms and fall asleep with her. Smelling the scent in Fu Xinran’s hair, her body relaxed, and she soon entered dreamland.
When she opened her eyes again, the sky was already bright, and the person in her arms had left at some unknown time.
Lin You rubbed her forehead, yawned, and stretched comfortably. Only then did she feel fully revived.
Worried that Fu Xinran had been frightened last night and afraid she might overthink things, Lin You wanted to explain to her.
But as soon as she came downstairs, she saw Zhuo An, who had clearly been arranged by Aunt Gui, bending over and mopping the floor.
“Doctor Zhuo, are you planning to take two salaries?” Lin You teased with a smile.
Zhuo An rolled her eyes at her and dragged the mop right up to Lin You’s feet. “Move aside, great Family Head Lin. If it weren’t for you, why would I have been carried back here by my aunt?”
Lin You touched the tip of her nose. She had not known Zhuo An was Aunt Gui’s niece.
Lin You probed with a teasing sentence. “Don’t go claiming ties with Aunt Gui.”
“Hehe. Then tell Aunt Gui not to make me mop the floor. I’m a perfectly good doctor, yet I came to your house to work as a servant. I really—ahhh!”
“Xiao Zhuo, don’t talk nonsense. You were the one who wanted to eat roast chicken, so I told you to exercise a little. Don’t go randomly complaining in front of Youyou.”
Aunt Gui heard Zhuo An’s nonsense and immediately came out to expose her.
Zhuo An resentfully pushed the mop away. Lin You looked at her with amusement, then called out, “Aunt Gui, I’m hungry. Is there anything to eat?”
“Yes, yes, yes. Youyou, come quickly. This morning, Madam personally cooked something delicious for you. Come quickly. Madam is making noodles for you right now.”
Aunt Gui hurriedly waved and called Lin You over.
As soon as Lin You heard that Fu Xinran had personally cooked, she immediately ran toward the kitchen. What virtue or ability did she have to actually eat breakfast personally made by Ranran?
Lin You was full of anticipation. But the moment she reached the kitchen, she saw the young chef look at her sympathetically before lowering her head and washing her own things.
Lin You inexplicably felt a little uneasy inside. Fu Xinran was a wealthy young lady raised delicately. Did she really know how to cook? Lin You swallowed nervously.
But she also did not dare not eat it!
Fu Xinran turned her head and smiled beautifully at Lin You, happily waving the long chopsticks in her hand. “Wait for me a little, okay?”
Hearing Fu Xinran’s clear and sweet voice, Lin You felt that no matter how bad it tasted, she would eat it without changing expression. After all, she had even eaten raw rats before. This little difficulty was nothing.
A few minutes later, a steaming bowl of clear broth noodles with an excellent presentation was placed in front of Lin You. Fresh green scallions of uneven lengths were sprinkled over the noodle soup.
At a glance, there was no problem at all. Full of expectation, Lin You used her chopsticks to stir the bowl of noodle soup, and hot steam rose instantly.
What did this bowl of noodles taste like? Lin You did not know. But what she smelled was sourness—an especially sour smell. Sour enough to make her teeth ache.
Lin You stopped her chopsticks and turned to look at Fu Xinran’s expectant eyes. In the end, she silently lowered her head and took big mouthfuls of the hot noodle soup Ranran had personally made. She slurped and wolfed it down without the slightest elegance.
Everyone thought the noodles must be very delicious. Zhuo An sat at a corner of the dining table and watched Lin You eat big mouthfuls of noodles. She could not help swallowing. Ignoring that mouthwatering sour smell, it definitely had to be delicious.
Aside from sourness, the only thing Lin You tasted in that bowl of hot noodle soup was more sourness. She smiled at Fu Xinran. “It tastes pretty good. Very appetizing.”
Then, under Fu Xinran’s complicated gaze, she finished both noodles and soup. Zhuo An swallowed. Whether it tasted good or not, she did not know, but that sourness was definitely appetizing.
Lin You held up the bowl she had eaten completely clean and pitifully handed it to Fu Xinran to see.
“Hmph.” Fu Xinran glanced at it, flicked her hair, turned around, and left.
Looking at Fu Xinran’s tsundere little manner, Lin You smiled smugly. She had won this round. Hiss, but her teeth were sour.
How could they not be sour? Half a bottle of aged vinegar from the kitchen had been poured in. Pressed down by the noodles, it looked fine at first glance, but once stirred, the entire hall was filled with sourness.
Burp.
Lin You let out a burp full of vinegar flavor and left calmly under Zhuo An’s thumbs-up.
Zhuo An looked at Lin You’s relaxed and cheerful back, and the corners of her mouth lifted into a smile. This time, the treatment effect was truly too good. She finally seemed like a living person.
So good that Zhuo An almost found it hard to believe. That was why when Aunt Gui asked her to stay, she simply went along with it and stayed. The last time she had come was two months ago. Back then, she had suggested that Lin You walk out of her little compartment.
Now that Lin You had suddenly walked out, Zhuo An felt a little uneasy instead.
Unfortunately, Aunt Gui’s mouth was tight, and she would not reveal even half a sentence. As for everyone else in the house, each and every one of them only listened to Aunt Gui and Lin You. You could ask anything, but the moment it involved the family head, even if you asked in circles, nothing would come out.
No one would tell her anything. Treating an illness was too hard. If Lin You were not a patient she had followed for years, she would have thrown in the towel already. Too uncooperative.
“Ranran?” Lin You pushed open the door to Fu Xinran’s small study and poked her head in to look. Fu Xinran’s back was facing her, and no one knew what she was doing, but she was not speaking.
Lin You quietly and carefully walked inside.
“You’re not going to the company today?” Fu Xinran’s cold voice suddenly sounded. Lin You immediately stood up straight.
“There are so many people at the company. They don’t lack me. Today, I just want to rest at home. I had a nightmare yesterday, you know. Do you want to go out and get some sun with me?”
Lin You threw caution to the wind and moved closer to Fu Xinran, tentatively stretching out a little foot to see whether she was angry.
Fu Xinran only lowered her head and continued what she was doing, unwilling to look at Lin You.
Lin You squatted down opposite the desk, tilted her head, and pitifully looked at Fu Xinran’s cold, beautiful face.
“I really just had a nightmare…”
Seeing Fu Xinran’s mocking gaze, Lin You could not keep making things up. She knew Fu Xinran definitely had some doubts, but she did not know how to explain this matter to Fu Xinran. It was too complicated.
So complicated that even she was still completely confused.
Lin You stood up dejectedly, dragging heavy steps as she closed the study door.
Fu Xinran took a deep breath and forced back the tears that had appeared in her eyes without her knowing.
A pair of hands suddenly reached over, startling Fu Xinran so badly that her foot pushed against the floor and her body tilted backward uncontrollably. Lin You reacted quickly and caught her.
“Ranran, are you okay?” Lin You worriedly carried Fu Xinran to the newly appeared sofa.
“You… impressive…” Fu Xinran laughed from anger and reached out to push her away. Lin You scratched her head. Had she scared her?
Whether she scared her or not, did she really have no idea in her heart?
Fu Xinran cut her a glare. “If you don’t want to say it, why bother…”
Lin You crouched down, her gaze direct and fervent as she looked at Fu Xinran. For a moment, she could not figure out whether she had fallen for the person in front of her, or whether her heart had moved only because Fu Xinran was a character she loved.
But no matter the reason, she only wanted to be good to the person before her and let her live well.
“I don’t know whether you’ll believe me, but I forgot part of my memories. Maybe that part is very important, or maybe it isn’t important at all, but I really did forget.”
This was not exactly a lie. Lin You did not have the original body’s memories, so she said she had forgotten. The plot in her hands and the things she had come into contact with were also very different, so she said she was not sure what she had forgotten.
Fu Xinran looked into Lin You’s eyes. That gaze, which had always held only coldness and stillness, now had vitality, sincerity, and protectiveness. Suddenly, Fu Xinran no longer wanted to pursue anything.
During this period, Lin You had truly changed a lot. So much that at times, Fu Xinran felt like she was dreaming. Perhaps Lin You had really forgotten something.
Fu Xinran only lowered her head and told Lin You, “I’ll wait until the day you’re willing to tell me. But I hope it won’t be a lie.”
Looking at Fu Xinran’s trusting eyes, Lin You really wanted to ask: If she were not the original body, would Fu Xinran still use those beautiful eyes to love her?
The heat and flutter in Lin You’s heart was extinguished at once, because the body she wore now was the original body’s body. She lowered her head a little sadly.
“President Lin, this is the investigation result you requested.” An ordinary male voice informed Lin You of the investigation results from the other end of the phone.
Lin You received the encrypted email sent by the private detective. This kind of email could only be downloaded once. One second after downloading, it would automatically destroy itself and disappear without leaving any trace.
“All right. The remaining payment will arrive within half an hour.” Lin You had the system download the file.
She did not plan to use the home network or computer to check it.
Lin You took advantage of Fu Xinran going to answer the phone. She closed her eyes and sank her consciousness into the system space.
“Host, this file should also be information the world automatically completed about the original body’s two mothers. Take a look.” The system stood in front of the blue transparent screen and flipped through the file it had downloaded.
Lin You looked at the system’s tail, which was like seaweed swaying in ocean waves without wind. She reached out and grabbed the system.
“As expected, it’s a big iron ball. It’s pretty hard too.” Lin You pinched the system’s head and tail for a while before disdainfully letting go.
System: “???”
Are you polite?
“Wu, if my points and energy weren’t all used up, would I have to use such a primitive form? Wuwah, you’re bullying a system…”
The system did not care anymore. It directly burst into loud sobs, quickly tore open an exit in the system space, swished its tail, and left while crying.
Lin You widened her eyes. She had actually bullied the system until it cried. She slapped her own cheap hand.
Once the system stopped crying, she would go coax it and buy it a toy. Look at how poor this little system was, crying from poverty.
Lin You stood alone in front of the screen and slid through page after page of documents and photos. Her brows grew tighter and tighter, until they were finally knotted together.
When Fu Xinran returned to the bedroom, she saw the person sitting on the small sofa waiting for her had already fallen asleep. Lin You’s phone had also been tossed onto the table. Looking at the sleeping person, whose brows still had not relaxed, Fu Xinran wondered what she worried about every day.
She then thought of what Doctor Zhuo had just said to her.
“I can’t tell you the Lin family head’s condition. But as the only person she has allowed into her little world, you can give her a little more love and patience.”
Fu Xinran was silent. Her hand rested in front of her lower abdomen. She had not expected that before the child in her belly was even born, she would first have to take care of a big child.
She took out another thin blanket from the room, covered Lin You with it, then turned and left again.
