After I Woke Up to Find I Had a Wife - Chapter 21
In the end, Lin You could only sit awkwardly in the living room and drink tea. While waiting for Fu Xinran to come downstairs, Butler Tang refilled her tea four times, and she went to the bathroom twice before her “old father-in-law” finally, reluctantly, came down together with Fu Xinran.
“You already have a child now. You must take responsibility. You absolutely cannot be like before anymore.” Fu Jingye spoke to the two of them with a stern face, though his gaze was mainly on Lin You.
What could Lin You do? She could only show her teeth in a placating smile, nod, and say yes.
Fu Xinran held back her laughter and said goodbye to her father. The two of them sat in the car without speaking the entire way. Lin You felt that her neck was still a little warm, so she touched it with her hand, but she did not find anything unusual.
Once they got home, the two went to shower separately. Lin You felt exhausted. After finishing her shower, she directly sprawled onto the bed and fell asleep.
Wake up… wake up… look behind you… look behind you…
Lin You’s eyes were tightly shut, cold sweat streaming down her face. The hair on her forehead had already been soaked by sweat. Her brows were tightly furrowed, her expression twisted. Someone kept whispering beside her ear, telling her to wake up, wake up…
Look? What am I supposed to look at? Lin You tentatively reached toward a ball of gray mist. She stared at that gray mist warily, but there was only one voice in her mind, telling her to wake up, wake up and look behind her. What was she supposed to look at?
A mass of black water surged over and submerged her. Lin You struggled and wandered in the water, but she could not find a way out and could not see any light. She did not know how she could escape from this nightmare.
Beep… beep… Host has already bound… Host death… requesting rescue from main system… A blurry mechanical voice came from the deepest part of the water, crackling and stuttering like a short-circuiting wire.
Lin You could not wake up. In a daze, she heard the sound of mechanical electric currents. She struggled upward in the water, but she still could not see any light or find an exit. The air in her lungs was almost gone.
She could only keep widening her eyes. Her hair was like water plants, floating with the current and sticking to her head.
Relying on countless rounds of training and the instinct to survive, she struggled weakly in the water through sheer will. In the end, Lin You suddenly turned and swam toward the intermittent voice.
“Lin You… Lin You, wake up… Hubby, hubby, wake up. My stomach hurts… Hurry and wake up…”
A blurry female voice came from above the water. Lin You raised her head, her lips pressed tightly together. There was nothing above her.
The sound of water poured into her ears, her mind, and her lungs. She covered her mouth and coughed repeatedly. The choking pain of suffocation made her lose even the instinct to struggle. She could only tilt her head back, wanting to see through that endless current.
Whose voice was that?
“Hubby… Lin You…”
The blurry female voice made Lin You struggle to turn her head and look.
“Haa… haaah… haa…”
After several long, deep breaths, Lin You suddenly opened her eyes and struggled to sit up. The soft texture beneath her hand made Lin You, still shaken, turn her head and look around.
Under the bright light, the doctor, Aunt Gui, and Chunsheng were all looking at her with worry. There was also Fu Xinran, sitting beside her and crying. Lin You uncomfortably touched her neck.
Seeing everyone breathe a sigh of relief, she could not help coughing. The tears at the corners of her eyes had not dried yet. Lin You casually wiped them away, her face covered in sweat and tears at her temples.
Lin You accepted the warm towel Chunsheng handed her and wiped the sweat on her face and neck. After wiping herself, she pulled Fu Xinran, who was still sobbing softly, into her arms.
“Don’t be afraid, don’t be afraid. I had a nightmare and scared everyone.”
Her slightly trembling body, and the pajamas soaked in cold sweat—rather than saying Lin You was comforting Fu Xinran, it was more like Fu Xinran was comforting her.
Aunt Gui suppressed the worry in her heart and looked toward the doctor, who was tidying her things. “Xiao Zhuo, how is the family head?”
The doctor, called Xiao Zhuo, had her long hair casually tied up with a hair tie, and she was still wearing panda-print pajamas. She was one of Lin You’s family doctors.
Zhuo An rubbed her eyes and smiled reassuringly at Aunt Gui. “As long as the family head woke up, there’s nothing wrong. Once the calming medicine arrives, have her drink a bowl, calm down properly, then sleep again.”
Fu Xinran wrapped both arms around Lin You’s back and gently patted her. Lin You tugged the corners of her lips into a stiff smile, wanting to smile, but it came out especially rigid.
The feeling of hovering between life and death was not something one could casually shake off.
Aunt Gui had everyone else go downstairs, leaving only Zhuo An in the room. Zhuo An rubbed her cheeks. She had been sleeping soundly at home.
As a result, when one phone call from Aunt Gui did not go through, seven or eight people had gone directly to her door, knocking and banging until everyone in the entire building had been woken up.
Suppressing her anger, she had opened the door, only to be carried away from her home without even getting to take a change of clothes.
Fortunately, the Lin family head was all right. Otherwise, she might have had to stay at the hospital all night tonight.
Sigh, what was all this? She had thought the Lin family head’s old problem had already recovered. Unexpectedly, without a sound, it came back again.
She could already foresee the days ahead when she would have to take root in the Lin family.
“Lin You, I won’t allow you to turn back into how you were before.” Fu Xinran’s eyes were red, but her tears stubbornly remained in her eyes. She fiercely pinched Lin You’s pale chin.
Every time Zhuo An came, Lin You would become even colder the next day, as if she had no warmth at all, deliberately isolating herself from everyone’s approach.
“What nonsense are you saying? I just had a nightmare. When I was little, I fell into water and was traumatized by it. Today, I suddenly dreamed of it, so of course I got scared. And you’re not even comforting me.”
Lin You spoke half-truthfully, acting wronged as she coquettishly asked Fu Xinran for comfort. Her slender fingers landed on the top of Fu Xinran’s head and rubbed hard, messing up Fu Xinran’s smooth long hair until static electricity appeared.
Only when Fu Xinran’s eyes shot knives at her did Lin You sheepishly withdraw her hand. Lin You accurately received the meaning Fu Xinran’s gaze conveyed: Do you want to die?
She reached out and pulled Fu Xinran completely into her arms. She did not care anymore. They had hugged so many times already. She had been frightened, so this was a reasonable comfort hug.
Fu Xinran placed her head against Lin You’s collarbone, closed her eyes, and quickly fell asleep.
In the middle of the night, Lin You had suddenly started having a nightmare and would not wake up no matter how Fu Xinran called her.
With no other choice, Fu Xinran woke Aunt Gui. The moment Aunt Gui saw Lin You’s condition, she knew what was going on and immediately called Doctor Zhuo, having her brought over.
But Lin You still would not wake up. They tried all kinds of methods. Doctor Zhuo told Fu Xinran to call her herself. When a person was trapped in their deepest fear, they needed their beloved to soothe them. Fu Xinran was doubtful, but she still tried.
Fu Xinran could not let go of the worry in her heart. She was afraid that when Lin You woke up tomorrow morning, she would change back again. Apart from sharing the same bed with Lin You during this period, they had only spent one night together two months ago during bonding heat.
So Fu Xinran had no idea why Doctor Zhuo had come over just because Lin You had a nightmare, or why Lin You could not be woken. She knew none of it.
Fu Xinran felt very defeated. In this family, she was like the only outsider.
Filled with worry and anger, the exhausted Fu Xinran slowly fell asleep, her fingers still tightly clutching the clothes on Lin You’s chest.
Lin You’s right hand patted Fu Xinran’s shoulder little by little, letting her feel reassured. Lin You rested her chin on the top of Fu Xinran’s head and smelled the scent at the tips of her hair. Only then did her heart relax.
That suffocating feeling gradually disappeared, and Lin You recovered.
Zhuo An leaned against the wall to the side, yawning while smiling at the lingering, intimate posture between Lin You and Fu Xinran.
“Wait a moment,” Lin You mouthed to Zhuo An. Zhuo An nodded and stopped eating dog food there.
“Ahhh, Host, are you okay? Just now, your heart stopped, and your brainwaves were like bungee jumping. You scared me to death. I couldn’t contact you either.”
The system’s crying voice sounded in Lin You’s mind, which had only just calmed down. Lin You uncomfortably rubbed her temples and said, exhausted, “Can you not talk in my brain? You’re so noisy.”
“Uh… Then I’ll come out first.” The system drilled out of the void, swishing its little tail as it circled Lin You up and down, left and right. After discovering that there was no problem, it finally took back its data-heart.
“Host, what happened to you just now?” The system looked at Lin You pitifully.
“You’re asking me? Who am I supposed to ask? Aren’t you so high-tech? Scan me.” Lin You glared unhappily at the system, which was swimming around like a little fish. It made her head hurt.
“I can only scan your brainwaves. Your heart stopped suddenly too, so I followed emergency procedure and protected you. I also couldn’t link to Host. During a mission, I can’t contact the main system. Host, you have to cherish your life.”
The system pitifully begged Lin You to cherish her life. Its two blue electronic eyes were almost crying.
“I’m fine. Maybe I remembered something from my previous life and it produced some kind of commonality with the original body. Go back first. I’ll rest. We’ll talk tomorrow.”
Seeing that the system was truly worried about her, Lin You felt a little warm inside. She smiled and comforted the system, telling it to go back and rest.
The system looked at Lin You’s disheveled state and felt that she probably needed rest too. It could only listlessly swish its tail and return to its own system space to continue searching through information.
Lin You carefully tucked Fu Xinran, who was lying in her arms, into the blanket and tucked the blanket around her. Then she brushed aside the long hair covering Fu Xinran’s beautiful face.
She sincerely thanked Fu Xinran. “Thank you.”
The voice she had heard in the dream had been Fu Xinran’s voice. If Fu Xinran had not persistently called her name, Lin You would not have been able to gather the last bit of strength to struggle awake from the dream.
After looking at Fu Xinran’s face for a while and seeing that she showed no signs of waking up, Lin You got up and went to the study. She needed to talk to this Doctor Zhuo.
Perhaps Doctor Zhuo had information she did not know. At the very least, in that set of memories, she had never seen Doctor Zhuo.
Lin You finally became a little interested. Only now did she sense that perhaps everything around her was not as simple as she had imagined.
The plot in her hands might not necessarily be a golden finger. Perhaps there were still many things the system had not told her, or perhaps the system itself did not know.
But no matter which result it was, Lin You liked holding things in her own hands. Anything not held in her hands was ultimately a weakness.
In the study, Zhuo An had barely tidied up her appearance so she would not be too impolite.
“Youyou, drink the calming medicine first.” Aunt Gui stood in the study and handed Lin You the yellow-brown calming medicine.
Lin You wanted to refuse, but seeing Aunt Gui’s disapproving expression, she could only down it in one gulp. The sour and bitter taste was truly hard to describe.
Zhuo An watched Lin You’s features scrunch together with great interest. Only when Aunt Gui smiled slightly at Zhuo An did Zhuo An reluctantly withdraw her expression.
“Thank you, Aunt Gui. I’ve troubled you to busy yourself for so long in the middle of the night. Hurry and go rest. Just let Chunsheng and the others keep watch tonight.” Lin You told Aunt Gui to go back and rest.
“Mm, I know. Youyou, chat with Xiao Zhuo.” Aunt Gui gently patted Lin You’s shoulder, picked up the bowl, and left.
The study door closed. Both of them withdrew their gazes. Lin You leaned back in the black chair, her gaze quietly looking at Zhuo An.
“You can’t look at me like that. Last time was the final treatment course. You had already gone two months since your last episode, so naturally, I stopped the treatment schedule.” Zhuo An shrugged. She thought Lin You was questioning why this had happened.
Lin You raised a brow and remained calm. “Organize all treatment records for me, including medication, as well as the treatment situation this time.”
“All right. Then can I go sleep now? Being carried back and forth by the Lin family head’s bodyguards is exhausting.” Zhuo An patted her shoulder, preparing to leave.
“So love really can restrain it. Family Head, you must keep it up.” Before Zhuo An left, she left behind one sentence, making Lin You frown.
What exactly had the original body been restraining?
She could not figure it out. She could only wait for the medical records tomorrow.
The voice in tonight’s dream had told her to look behind her. What was behind her? She did not understand. Lin You turned her head and looked behind the chair, her brows furrowing.
There was nothing behind her.
