After the Fake Young Master Ran Away with His Child, the Villain Went Crazy - Chapter 13
One week later, Jing Ruan was brought to that company by Yan Yi He’s people. He sat in the back seat of the car, opened the window, and looked up at the splendid, towering building.
The entire building belonged to that company. Yet this company was the most insignificant one under the Yan family. Jing Ruan finally began to understand why the steward had said the Yan family was a towering tree, while families like theirs were ants beneath it.
“Young Master Jing, is something wrong?”
The person Yan Yi He had sent was sitting in the passenger seat. Seeing that Jing Ruan still had not gotten out of the car after a long while, he asked.
Jing Ruan shook his head and said no. Then he pinched his own palm, took a deep breath to encourage himself, opened the car door, and got out.
Assistant Sun led him inside. Two bodyguards followed behind Jing Ruan. When their group entered the front lobby, the receptionists greeted them warmly.
Assistant Sun only glanced at them once before leading everyone straight toward the elevators. Once they reached the elevator doors, Assistant Sun directly took out a card and swiped it for the private elevator. After swiping it, he handed the card to Jing Ruan.
“Young Master Jing, when you come here in the future, you can take the private elevator.”
Assistant Sun explained.
The elevator rose to the eighteenth floor. With a ding, the doors opened. Jing Ruan felt a little stage fright. He had never seen such a serious office setting before. This was his first time.
Jing Ruan followed closely behind Assistant Sun, his heart beating extremely fast.
When they reached the meeting room, it was already full of people. The seat at the very head was empty. Assistant Sun walked to stand beside that seat and motioned for Jing Ruan to come sit down.
Under everyone’s assessing gazes, Jing Ruan sat.
After sitting down, his gaze swept over everyone in the meeting room. Everyone here was older than him. Some of them were even old enough to be his father’s generation.
Their gazes were like sharp blades, like jackals, wolves, tigers, and leopards.
They were all sizing up this newly arrived company head, someone who had only just come of age, young as a tender sprout that could be snapped with the slightest lift of a hand.
Assistant Sun lightly patted Jing Ruan’s shoulder, signaling for him not to be afraid. Then he handed the documents clipped in his hand to the person on the far right, letting them pass the materials down and read them themselves.
“I believe everyone has already received notice in advance. This is Mr. Jing. From now on, he will be leading all of you. I hope everyone will cooperate with one another and work together to develop this company better.”
Assistant Sun was concise and went straight to the point.
An elderly man seated on the far right spoke.
“May I ask whether Mr. Jing has studied management courses before? Does he have any similar management experience? Has he achieved anything outstanding in the past?”
“Assistant Sun, where is President Yang from before? He was managing everything perfectly well. Why was he suddenly replaced?”
Once this person spoke, the others immediately threw out even more questions. Every question struck directly at Jing Ruan’s sore spots and weaknesses.
Listening to their aggressive questioning, Jing Ruan’s face turned deathly pale. His mind went blank. He was like an empty human shell, with nothing inside.
Assistant Sun lifted a hand and signaled for everyone to be quiet.
“Everyone, please remember that this was an order personally issued by Mr. Yan. He appointed this Mr. Jing as your person in charge. Do not forget who the boss behind all of you is.”
Assistant Sun forcefully suppressed all their attempts to make things difficult.
For a moment, everyone in the meeting room fell silent. No one dared challenge the Yan family’s authority anymore. Jing Ruan admired Assistant Sun so much that he could have prostrated himself in awe. Assistant Sun was merely an insignificant assistant by Yan Yi He’s side, and Yan Yi He had many such assistants.
Jing Ruan felt an even deeper reverence and fear toward Yan Yi He.
After the notice was delivered, Assistant Sun took Jing Ruan to his office. The previous occupant’s things had not yet been completely cleared away, so it looked somewhat messy.
Assistant Sun instructed people to come in and clean up.
Jing Ruan sat in the boss’s chair, somewhat at a loss. He did not know what he should do. When Assistant Sun turned back, he saw Young Master Jing’s timid appearance.
Assistant Sun knew what his responsibility was: assist, but do not participate in decision-making. When necessary, suppress all disobedient people.
But if the master himself could not stand up, then even if subordinates like them suppressed others, it might be effective once or twice. If it happened too many times, it could provoke a backlash instead and completely ignite those people’s resentment.
“Young Master Jing, there is no need to be afraid.”
“There is a saying: if you do something, there may not be a good result, but if you do nothing, there will definitely be no result. If you aren’t even willing to take the first step, then are you expecting these people to one day have their brains smashed by flowerpots and suddenly obey your every word?”
Assistant Sun held not the slightest complaint about being assigned here to assist this time. The way his other colleagues looked at him carried faint sympathy.
It was already known to everyone that there was someone by Mr. Yan’s side. As assistants, they observed everything and listened in all directions. Each of them had their own abilities, so naturally, they knew Jing Ruan’s background clearly.
They all felt this was like playing along while a useless fool pretended to be crown prince.
The difficulty was obvious, and it would be very easy to put in effort without receiving any thanks.
But Assistant Sun did not think so.
Mr. Yan had entered the group at sixteen, and assistants like them had been working by his side ever since. They interacted with him a great deal in daily life. The clearest understanding these assistants had of Mr. Yan was that although Mr. Yan was gentle to outsiders, in reality, he had an extremely strong desire for control.
In his eyes, all people were divided only into those who could be used and those who could not.
For a person like him to be willing to spend time and energy, and even be willing to take out a company so that a young man with neither ability nor background could practice his courage—
this in itself was something astonishing.
Different people stood in different positions, and the things precious to them would also change along with their status.
At present, Assistant Sun still could not see what was especially good about Young Master Jing, but he trusted his own intuition as an assistant. So he offered a bit of goodwill and gave the other party some guidance.
When Jing Ruan heard Assistant Sun’s words, he thought of what Mr. Yan had taught him before. He knew that if he did not change, then he would forever remain that mouse hiding in the gutter from danger, frightened all day long by the slightest movement of wind or grass.
An arrogant idiot was still a little stronger than a coward.
Jing Ruan clocked in on time every day. After he barely managed to recognize the most important elders in the company, people began sending him documents and files every day. One assistant was specifically responsible for reading documents to him.
Assistant Sun sat at another desk opposite him. Jing Ruan had requested this. He felt that if he could see Mr. Yan’s assistant the moment he lifted his eyes, he would feel a little more confident.
Assistant Sun simply treated it as changing his office location. He did not interfere with Jing Ruan’s handling of company matters. At first, Jing Ruan’s eyes blurred from reading documents. He understood nothing about this specialized knowledge.
Later, Jing Ruan found an assistant and had her read the documents to him. While she read, he would also ask what the words in the documents meant.
After Jing Ruan listened to all these documents, he did not sign a single one.
Every day, when he had nothing else to do, he sat in the office reading documents and files, treating it as studying and learning characters. When it was time, he ate. After eating, he took an afternoon nap. After waking from his nap, he continued reading.
After a week, Yan Yi He also received reports about his behavior, but he did not interfere. He also wanted to see what Jing Ruan intended to do.
Another week passed like this, and those old-timers could no longer sit still. Not a single contract or document had been signed. This was clearly treating the company like a game.
Those old-timers had struggled for half their lives to finally reach their current positions. Having a brat parachuted in above their heads was already infuriating enough. They had not expected this person to neither work nor consult them.
“President Jing, why haven’t these contracts been signed? Do you know how much these contracts are worth? Do you know how much profit the company will lose if you don’t sign them? Have you thought about that?”
“You don’t understand, and you don’t even know to ask. You really think you can wave a chicken feather around as if it were an imperial warrant.”
Jing Ruan was eating lunch when these senior figures in the company suddenly barged into his office and chattered loudly at him.
Jing Ruan’s cheeks were puffed out as he shoveled rice into his mouth.
His phone was propped up on a stand, with a video call open. On the other end of the call, Yan Yi He was also dining. However, unlike Jing Ruan’s simple meal, Yan Yi He was eating alone in a high-end restaurant.
Hearing the noise from the other end of the phone, Yan Yi He stopped speaking. He ate quietly, and the video call was not hung up.
He wanted to see how the little pet he raised would deal with this round of trouble.
These old-timers had deliberately come to find Jing Ruan while Assistant Sun had gone out for lunch. They wanted to force him to voluntarily step down.
Jing Ruan ate every grain of rice cleanly, not wasting a single one. Only after he finished eating did he look at the old men who had come to make trouble for him.
“Is my status higher than yours?”
Jing Ruan did not understand job titles, so he asked them with confusion on his face.
The moment he said this, the old men who had been slapping the table, glaring, and arguing until their faces flushed suddenly fell silent. What followed was even greater anger.
“Don’t think you’re so impressive just because you latched onto Mr. Yan. A person should know their own limits. You have nothing but an empty skin. Inside, your belly is stuffed with cotton. You’re not only ignorant, but fearless because of that ignorance.”
“If you had even a little shame, you would leave on your own. This is not a place for you to play house. This is a company. There are hundreds of people above and below in this company, all waiting to earn money and support their families. How can someone like you lead everyone toward something better?”
These people were just short of pointing their fingers at Jing Ruan and cursing him outright.
“What do they have to do with me?”
Jing Ruan suddenly said this sentence.
“They aren’t anyone to me. Why should I care about them? If my status is higher than yours, shouldn’t you be the ones helping me?”
Jing Ruan did not know the word “assist,” so he swapped in a word he did know. After Jing Ruan finished speaking, he stared at the phone on the stand.
The video call had not been hung up.
“Mr. Yan, why don’t they listen to me? Is it because you aren’t powerful enough? Is that why they think your orders aren’t that important?”
Jing Ruan spoke these words without rhyme or reason.
The old men who had come to make trouble seemed to have had a pause button pressed on them. Some of their faces twisted frighteningly. Their eyes stared straight at the phone Jing Ruan had spoken to.
Out of kindness, Jing Ruan took the phone down and turned it around to face them, letting them see Yan Yi He on the other side of the video.
Yan Yi He smiled and greeted them.
After the greeting, Jing Ruan turned the phone back toward himself.
Yan Yi He was smiling on the other end of the video. It was different from the smile he had given those people just now; the corners of his eyes were clearly raised.
“Jing Ruan, people who don’t listen can be thrown into my Hundred Beasts Park to feed the tigers. I don’t like people who obey outwardly while opposing me in secret.”
Yan Yi He spoke slowly from the other end of the video.
After speaking, he paused for a few seconds before continuing.
“I was joking, to lighten the mood.”
“Jing Ruan, handle them however you like.”
As soon as he finished speaking, Yan Yi He hung up the video call.
Jing Ruan looked at these old men. Their eyes were filled with anger and unwillingness, but they had no choice but to endure it. Jing Ruan could even see that some of them were so angry their hands were trembling.
Even so, they still maintained their dignity and did not continue making trouble for Jing Ruan. The two sides remained frozen in silence.
A strange, floating feeling rose in Jing Ruan’s heart, as if warm wind kept blowing into his chest. This feeling was wonderful.
Jing Ruan suddenly laughed twice.
Mr. Yan had said he would shape a human skin for him.
So this was what it felt like to put on human skin.
How interesting.
