A Faceful Of Lovey-Dovey PDA - Chapter 2
Back in middle school, Chu Mei did not have that fox-spirit, sexy figure with surging waves and curves.
At that time, she was flat as a board front and back. From far away or up close, she looked like a washboard. Standing beside Su Qin, who had developed early, she looked exactly like a foolish little boy.
Su Qin was a favored child of heaven. From the time she was young, her features had already been delicate and pretty, and she naturally carried the air of a fairy Sister. Fair skin, a high nose bridge, thin lips, dark eyes like the night, and she smelled fragrant every single day. The internet was not that popular back then, but the word “goddess” had already been used by their peers for Su Qin.
Chu Mei did not know what a goddess was. She only knew that Su Qin, this immortal Sister coveted by countless young boys, was the unqualified Sister who had grown up with her since they were tiny, who loved bullying her when there was nothing better to do, and who gave her attitude every few days.
Back then, Chu Mei was a complete and utter TV addict. From My Fair Princess to Journey to the West to The New Legend of Madame White Snake, she had basically memorized them all.
During that period, Su Qin was annoyed to death by her. Every day, she would ride her bike and wait outside Chu Mei’s house to pick up her little sister so they could go to school together. Early this morning, she saw Chu Mei walk out holding two strips of tissue paper. With a “whoosh,” Chu Mei flung them out and grinned like an idiot. “Oh, Sister, why do you still linger in school? Did we not agree? After repaying our debt, we would return to Qingfeng Cave together to cultivate. If you insist on going your own way like this, then when Fahai comes, Xiaoqing won’t care about you anymore!”
A slap landed on her head. Mother Chu frowned at her. “What kind of fit are you throwing now? Hurry up and go. Su Qin has been waiting for you for ages.”
Chu Mei clutched her head and ran over. She plopped herself onto the back seat and patted Su Qin’s back. “Giddyup, giddyup! White Dragon Horse, hooves toward the west! Hurry and carry your master to fetch the scriptures!”
The corner of Su Qin’s eye twitched. She truly did not want to pay attention to this crazy snake spirit. In order to stop Chu Mei from chattering any further, Su Qin used one sentence to drag her back to reality. “Your exam paper. Did you ask Auntie to sign it?”
Chu Mei’s head drooped at once. Returning from seeking scriptures and cultivating immortality back to the mortal world, she sighed. “I didn’t dare. I was afraid I’d get beaten into an idiot.”
Su Qin frowned and slowed the bike down. “But you have to hand it in today.”
Chu Mei smiled sweetly. She reached out and hugged Su Qin’s waist tightly, pressing her entire body closely against her. “This is exactly the kind of moment when Sister shines bright.”
Su Qin: “…”
It had been like this since they were little. As long as Chu Mei called her Sister, nothing good ever followed.
Once they reached the classroom, Chu Mei pulled out her forty-eight-point exam paper and hugged Su Qin’s leg. “Sister, you can’t watch someone die and refuse to save them.”
Su Qin folded her arms and turned her head to look out the window.
Seeing that time was almost up, Chu Mei was about to cry. “I’ll cover your snacks for a whole month.”
Su Qin looked at her seriously. “You’re really funny. Do I look like that kind of person?”
Chu Mei held up two fingers. “Two months!”
Su Qin sneered. “You really look down on me.”
Chu Mei gritted her teeth and went all in. “Three months!”
Su Qin lowered her head and signed. “Deal. No taking it back.”
Chu Mei: “…”
Ten minutes later, Chu Mei handed in the exam paper with the forged signature. She trembled as she watched the teacher, terrified that she would be exposed. Su Qin, sitting beside her, drank a bottle of Wangzai milk with an utterly relaxed expression.
“What were you doing earlier? I told you to do your homework, but you refused. You deserve it.” Su Qin added salt to the wound. If this had been any other time, Chu Mei would have exploded long ago. But right now, she had to read the room and speak according to someone else’s mood. “Yes, Your Old Buddha-ness is absolutely right. This servant obeys the decree. From now on, I will definitely study hard and improve every day!”
She said those words through gritted teeth. Su Qin looked at her round little face and shook her head.
There were not many classes in middle school.
Especially in first year.
One little boy and little girl after another had just escaped the cage of elementary school and rushed into middle school, thinking they had already grown up. They began showing off and fluttering around in every possible way, imitating adults as they started dating, flirting with girls, and asking people out.
Chu Mei had neither too many nor too few love letters. They could be counted on two hands. Su Qin’s love letters, however, were specially kept by Chu Mei. Every so often, when she had collected enough, she would take them all to the old man who watched the school gate and sell them as scrap paper, then exchange the money for two popsicles and come back to eat them with Su Qin.
Because of this, Chu Mei had a hobby: reading love letters. She could read a love letter with so much feeling and vivid emotion that people’s goosebumps would stand on end.
Needless to say, the victim was once again Su Qin.
Holding Su Qin’s love letter, Chu Mei gazed at her with deep affection. “Ah, Qin, that day, you disappeared into the rain. I looked at your back, so skinny and scrawny, and my heart truly ached. I was so reluctant to let you go, so unwilling to part with you. How I longed to rush forward and tell you, Qin, you are my love. But I did not dare step forward. I could only hold myself tightly. Ah, my love…”
Sourness churned up in Su Qin’s stomach.
Chu Mei continued, “I know that the current me still cannot promise you anything, but… Qin, in the wind, in the rain, in the mist, in the water, I promise you, I will always be there!”
The corner of Su Qin’s eye twitched.
Chu Mei licked her lips. “The writing isn’t bad. This male classmate must be chasing Auntie Qiong Yao’s dramas lately. He’s only learned the surface, though. He needs to keep working hard. But what the hell is ‘in the wind, mist, rain, and water’? Is he some kind of water monster?”
After her critique, the teacher at the podium could no longer bear it. “Chu Mei!”
“Here!” Chu Mei immediately answered. The teacher threw a piece of chalk at her. “Stand for the whole class!”
Chu Mei stood up with her lips pursed. Being punished to stand had already become part of her daily routine.
From that position, she could see Su Qin listening seriously in class. Actually, Chu Mei had always been very confused. She understood Su Qin and knew that Su Qin had already taught herself this semester’s textbooks. So why could she still listen attentively, quietly watch the teacher, and even give the teacher a warm smile whenever their eyes met? Wasn’t that tiring? How could it be better than sleeping?
Still, Su Qin really was pretty…
From this angle, Su Qin’s features looked so three-dimensional. That high nose bridge looked as though something had been padded into it, and her eyelashes were so long too… Wait. Chu Mei grew puzzled. Why was this girl’s face turning red?
When class ended, Chu Mei’s stomach was already clanging with hunger. Because her careless personality meant she was always losing things, her meal card was always kept by Su Qin.
“I want diced chicken with chili, braised chicken drumsticks, soy-braised chicken wings. I want to swallow a whole big hen in one bite!” Chu Mei was in the middle of listing the things she liked to eat when a group of girls came gathering around from the opposite side, sleeves rolled up and lollipops in their mouths.
Su Qin frowned and pulled Chu Mei behind her with one tug.
“Who is Su Qin?” The girl at the front lifted her chin and looked down at the two of them. One glance was enough to tell that she was here to cause trouble. Before Su Qin could speak, Chu Mei cupped her hands in greeting. “That would be me. May I ask what guidance you have for me?”
The girl narrowed her eyes and looked at her. “Don’t you know you can’t casually steal someone else’s boyfriend?”
Chu Mei froze, then looked at Su Qin beside her and gritted her teeth. Fuck. So it was this young lady’s romantic debt again.
“Beat her up!”
Girls of that era each carried a Young-and-Dangerous gangster heart. Once the big sister gave the order, the girls sprang into action at once, swinging their fists as they charged over. Chu Mei immediately hugged her head, waiting to be hit. Su Qin reacted quickly. She grabbed Chu Mei’s school uniform and yanked her backward, and Chu Mei went tumbling out like a spinning top.
The big sister stared at Su Qin, a little dumbfounded. She licked her lollipop. “Who are you?”
Su Qin sneered, raised her leg high, and assumed a taekwondo stance.
“Fuck, Sister Fang, she knows martial arts!” a short-haired girl beside her reported.
The big sister looked at her in disdain. “I’m not blind.”
By now, Chu Mei had also crawled up from the ground. She stepped between the two of them. “Um, Sister, I think you might have misunderstood something.” She had been born with a heart that wanted to protect the weak. Su Qin might be able to fool others, but she could not fool Chu Mei. That flashy taekwondo stance was obviously just for show. If that short-haired girl threw one punch, Su Qin would definitely be beaten until she could not even lift her leg. A wise person did not fight when the odds were against them. Chu Mei smiled as brightly as a flower. “Look, in the jianghu, it’s better to resolve grudges than create them. We—”
The big sister reached out and shoved Chu Mei aside. Her gaze landed straight on Su Qin. After sizing her up and down, she coughed, straightened her collar, and held out her hand. “My name is Wang Yanfang. You can call me Xiaofang. You’re very pretty. Can we be friends?”
Chu Mei: “…”
