A Faceful Of Lovey-Dovey PDA - Chapter 9
After thinking it over, Chu Mei answered seriously, “There really isn’t.” Ah Qin’s skin was so fair, her legs were so long, her chest was so big, and most importantly, she smelled fragrant at every moment. When hugged, she was soft and warm, and even when she spoke to Chu Mei, her voice was gentle and carried a hint of fragrance. Forget comparing those boys to her—they were simply not on the same level at all.
Lin Xueyin looked at her and laughed. She patted Chu Mei on the shoulder. “All right, Chuchu, say no more. We’re both fellow sufferers cast adrift in this world. It’s just a matter of who understands it one step earlier. The road ahead for you probably won’t be any easier than mine.”
After Lin Xueyin said that, Chu Mei felt as if her whole body were floating. Even after she entered the classroom, she was so out of it that she stepped on Su Qin’s foot without noticing and simply flopped onto the desk to gather herself.
Su Qin looked at the huge footprint on her snow-white sneaker and froze for a moment. Then she grabbed Lin Xueyin, who was about to walk into the classroom. “What did you say to her?”
Lin Xueyin looked innocent. “Nothing. What could I say? We just chatted about the weather.”
Su Qin did not speak. She narrowed her eyes and stared at Lin Xueyin. Lin Xueyin was most afraid of her like this. “Fine, don’t overthink it. If I’m lying to you, I’m a puppy.”
Su Qin’s voice was cold. “You’ve been a puppy and a piglet for how many years now? You’re a high school student already. Can you stop being so childish? Don’t say all kinds of messy things to Chuchu. Her brain doesn’t work well. If you say too much, she’ll start overthinking.”
Lin Xueyin was speechless. These two childhood friends of hers really did have an unusual kind of relationship. She was different from Chu Mei and Su Qin. Her parents were both in business. Although they gave her plenty of material comfort, they spent very little time with her. Ever since she was little, Lin Xueyin had matured a little earlier than the others. When it came to feelings and the ways of the world, she had always been the leader among them. Actually, Su Qin was also very mature, but in the end, she was still a child. Whenever something involved Chu Mei, she would lose the calm she should have had.
Chu Mei wasted the entire morning’s classes. Her already-not-very-useful brain thought about all kinds of messy things. Those thoughts that had been suppressed deep in her heart surged upward like mountains overturning and seas churning. Yes, ever since she was little, it seemed that in her heart and eyes, there had only ever been Ah Qin. Forget boys—even if all of humanity were placed in front of her, none of them would be better than Ah Qin. That was the Sister who had always been by her side since childhood, the dearest person who had played and fought with her all the way growing up. Only… they were both girls. Could they really talk about liking or not liking someone the way Ah Yin did? Would Mom and Dad agree? What about Uncle and Auntie? They would probably all think she was sick… And most importantly, there was Su Qin. She had always treated Chu Mei as her little sister.
Su Qin had been paying attention to Chu Mei’s state the whole time. Seeing her prop her head up with both hands, smiling one moment and looking sorrowful the next, Su Qin’s heart felt as if it had been wrinkled by the wind, restless and uneasy.
All the way until lunchtime, Chu Mei remained in that half-dead state. Su Qin got her food according to what she liked and touched her forehead. “Are you sick?”
Chu Mei instinctively dodged Su Qin’s hand. “No. I’m just a little sleepy.”
Su Qin looked at her own hand and frowned, then calmly withdrew it. “Then rest for a while after you eat.”
“Okay.” Chu Mei lowered her head and ate. For a moment, the two of them were silent. After so many years, aside from a few large-scale fights, they had never been like this before. Chu Mei felt awful inside, and Su Qin barely touched her own food.
In contrast, the culprit who had started everything, Lin Xueyin, was currently carrying her meal and sitting beside Sister Fang, smiling as she looked at her. “Sister Fang, you’ve gotten thinner again. Eat more meat.”
She picked the meat from her own bowl and gave it to Sister Fang. Sister Fang smiled coldly, turned around, and walked away with her lunchbox.
Lin Xueyin’s smile froze on her face. She lowered her head, unwilling to accept it. Why? Why was Sister Fang keeping such a distance from her? Was it because of her family? She had no power to choose that, and from the bottom of her heart, she had never looked down on Sister Fang in the slightest. So why was Sister Fang ignoring her?
After entering high school, Sister Fang was still very powerful. She had only just arrived at the neighboring seat when two girls gathered around her. “Sister Fang, what’s wrong? Bad mood? Want to smoke one later?”
As she spoke, the girl took out a pack of cigarettes. “These are Zhonghua. I swiped them from my dad.”
Sister Fang frowned. “Get lost. Why are you everywhere? You’re just kids, and you’re already learning bad habits.”
When the other girl saw this, she laughed. “Boss, did that little girl surnamed Lin make you unhappy? Should I find a few people to teach her a lesson?”
“Just try it.” Sister Fang’s voice was low. Usually, she was all smiles, but once her face darkened, she was extremely intimidating.
Both girls stiffened.
Sister Fang’s gaze sank as she looked at them. “Whoever dares touch her, this old lady will risk her life against them.”
“…”
—
It was a distracted meal. It stayed that way until a tall, strapping heartthrob carried his tray over and sat down across from them. Chu Mei had always brooded over any male creature appearing near Su Qin, so the moment she saw a boy sit down, she immediately shot him an angry glare.
The boy smiled at her. “Top Sister, do you still remember me?”
Huh? This time, he was not here for Su Qin? Chu Mei’s heart relaxed quite a bit. She sized the boy up, and after a long while, she showed surprise. “Yang Feng?” Wasn’t this the handsome big brother who had taught her basketball before?
Yang Feng was very happy to see that Chu Mei recognized him. “You still remember me?” After so long, Yang Feng had grown much taller. His voice was lower than before, and he still had thick brows, big eyes, and a baby face. He was not exactly extremely handsome, but he was very pleasing to look at.
Chu Mei nodded. “Of course. You’re the one who taught me basketball.”
Beside her, Su Qin, who was drinking yogurt, squeezed the box until it made a sharp creaking sound.
Did this count as meeting an old acquaintance? Just as Chu Mei was trapped in a hundred thoughts with no way out, Yang Feng appeared. The two of them chatted happily and even agreed to play basketball together after lunch.
While washing their hands, Su Qin looked at her. “You’re not taking a nap?”
Chu Mei was very happy. “No nap. I’m going to play basketball with him for a while. I haven’t exercised in ages.”
“It’s very hot.” Su Qin’s voice was icy. Chu Mei comforted her, “Don’t worry. There are trees by the basketball court, so the sun won’t hit us. You go sleep for a while by yourself.”
“Who needs you to care!” Su Qin’s voice suddenly rose, and the water from her hands splashed all over Chu Mei’s face. Chu Mei was stunned by it. Looking at Su Qin’s angry departing figure, her entire face turned into a Black question-mark meme. What was going on? How could she turn hostile just like that? After thinking about it, Chu Mei smiled. She understood. It had to be because Su Qin’s period had come, so her temper was bad.
On the green court, Chu Mei skillfully dribbled the ball, suddenly jumped, and sank a three-pointer into the hoop.
Yang Feng applauded. “Not bad. Looks like you practiced plenty during this time.”
He bought a bottle of Chu Mei’s favorite yogurt and handed it over, then patted the space beside him. “Take a break.”
The two of them had practiced basketball like this when they were younger, never stopping for an entire summer. Later, Yang Feng had moved away, and they lost contact. In the blink of an eye, they had actually met again in high school.
Chu Mei sat down openly beside him, and many people around them cast strange looks their way.
High school was different from middle school, after all. Those little brats from before had each grown into gossip-loving boys and girls. Even the slightest breeze could make them fabricate an entire love story for you.
“Why didn’t you say anything before you left back then?” Chu Mei complained, drinking her yogurt carelessly. She had not expected Yang Feng to be quite thoughtful. After so long, he still remembered that she liked drinking yogurt.
Yang Feng smiled cheerfully. “We didn’t have phones either. Before I left, I waited for you at the basketball court for a whole day, but you never came.”
Chu Mei thought about it. “Oh, that day was Ah Qin’s birthday. I stayed home with her the whole day.”
“You two have a really good relationship?” Yang Feng’s smile disappeared. Chu Mei nodded. “Of course. We’re ride-or-die buddies. Our relationship is especially solid. What’s wrong? Why do you make a stern face whenever I mention my Ah Qin? Such a beautiful person, and you don’t like her?”
Chu Mei sounded a little serious when she said this. Her way of thinking was truly difficult to grasp. She did not want others to get too close to Su Qin, but she also could not stand others disliking her. Not even one critical word was allowed.
How could Yang Feng know her little thoughts? He smiled. “No, I just feel like she doesn’t like me. Every time we meet, she’s cold. Especially when I chat with you, her face goes stiff, like she’s very unhappy.”
“Ah, you misunderstood. That’s just how she is.” A bit of yogurt had stuck to the corner of Chu Mei’s mouth as she drank. “In front of outsiders, she’s always cold as ice. Do you understand celestial fairies? They’re all untouched by mortal smoke and fire.”
“…”
Yang Feng had nothing to say. He could only stand up and pat the basketball. “Come on, let’s play a couple more rounds.”
“Coming!” Chu Mei tossed aside the yogurt and ran over.
“…”
Not far away, Lin Xueyin wore a tennis cap and looked gloomily at Su Qin. “Ah Qin, it’s noon. Instead of sleeping, you dragged me out here to roast in the sun? My fair skin is getting tanned.”
Su Qin stared fixedly for a while at Chu Mei, who was laughing and joking happily with Yang Feng. She sighed. “Tell me, why is it like this?”
“What do you mean, why?” Lin Xueyin was completely confused by the question. Su Qin’s voice was low. “Why is it that I just can’t stand seeing her with someone else? Even if she only smiles, my heart feels as if something is stirring it up. No matter what, I feel uncomfortable.” After saying that, she lowered her head and looked at the ground, her gaze sorrowful.
After waiting for a long while without any reaction from Lin Xueyin, Su Qin lifted her head in confusion. She saw Lin Xueyin looking at her, both hands placed over her chest. Drawing up all the strength from her dantian, her mouth stretched as wide as a toad’s, she began singing in a bel canto style.
“This is love~~~~~ love~~~~~~”
